After today, I firmly believe Brodie Croyle is the No. 2 QB and that Tyler Thigpen is in danger of even making this team.

everyone thinks i'm crazy

But I firmly believe Croyle is the second best QB on this team as well

as a #2 yes

he can come in for a game or two and spot start and make all the throws.. But if you are counting on him for a 16 game season your going to be dissappointed

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

We need to keep Croyle and Thigpen...

I think Thigpen is the better QB for a number of intangible reasons. I also think that Croyle would make a fine #2 man. Before Croyle got hurt last year I said Croyle has prvoved, so far in this season, that he is a good # 2 man instead of a #3 man. He was coming along nicely till he got injured.

The point is both Croyle and Thigpen have prime time exposure. Thigpen has some impressive prime time exposure. What we should do is keep Thigpen as #2 and Croyle as #3. If Castle goes down in the season, Thigpen will probably step in and shine. If that is the case, we might be able to get a second rounder or even a first for him. It might be something like the Castle situation when Brady went down. Croyle could then come forth as a legit #2. The key here is not who is the better QB, but who will make the best trade bait.

I said earlier,

Brodie looks to have put some weight on this offseason

Croyle - Solid #2 - Maybe decent #1

Brodie is a tough kid. He went thru the grueling rehab to be in the position to play this year. He appears to have put on a little weight to help with durability. His arm is still solid. He seems mobile and doing a QB sneak in the rain, shows his knee is in pretty good shape. He has proven in camp and in last weeks game that at worst he is a solid #2.

If he keeps up the good work I can see him easily competing with Cassel for #1 or at least what may become a shared QB position for the year.

Dumb.

Thigpen will make the team for the simple fact that he can take a lot of hits to wear Crodie can only take 2. And Thigpen is better.

by The_Bernard_Pollard_Rule on Aug 9, 2009 12:27 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

In terms of NFL QB skills

Croyle is far better than Thigpen. The only thing about Thigpen is he proved he can take the beating and get back up. We shall see how the coaches see this. I think we can expect to see a lot of both of them in the preseason and that will tell the tale.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

by Zodeman on Aug 9, 2009 12:27 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If croyle is a better "NFL" qb then why

Did thigpen produce 3 times the numbers that croyle produced without given the amount of attention and preparation that croyle was givin.

I keep on hearing “he’s got such a great arm” blah blah blah. Who cares, the world is filled with wasted talent. Give me an actual reason why croyle is better then thigpen in regards to game day? Thigpen is hands down a much more impressive qb on game day

Thigpen produces when it counts, croyle produces in practice yet scores 7-10 points a game when it counts and then gets injured a few days later.. Babb is wayyyy to premature with this statement. It’s PRACTICE for God sakes

Like I said

Thigpen proved he could take the beating. That doesn’t mean he throws a good ball. That doesn’t mean he makes good reads. It does mean he can improvise. It also means he had to have an offense tailored to him. In terms of NFL style offense, Thigpen may be in trouble. Will it be Croyle? Who knows. Guttierez may be the number two man. Preseason games will tell a lot.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

But our offense was catered to croyles strenghs as well.

Regadless, none of us can deny how much more fun and productive this offense became after thigpen started rockin.

I’ve watched every game and to me there’s a night and day difference between the two. Did croyle even throw two touch downs in a game? I mean the guy never even looked good except for on an occasional drive.

Listen I could care less whether it’s a traditional offense or not. I’m not sure why that has become such a major criteria to some of the people on here when evaluating quarterbacks but thigpens got moxy and he’s a winner. We can’t blame him for our losses last year since we had one of the worst defenses in history

by CALIFAN1986 on Aug 9, 2009 1:02 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Offense was tailored to suit the o-line deficit.

Thigpen let them do MORE things, at least to my eye. When Croyle and Huard went down in rapid succession, Thigpen was the only one tough and mobile enough to survive and to substitute for other team weaknesses with his feet. I think cause-and-effect was all upside-down in the reporting, because it fits our preconceptions. And one thing you notice if you follow the blogs for very long is how one guy’s thimble-deep opinion often takes on a life of its own, gets re-reported by someone else who did no real research, and quickly becomes conventional wisdom, when it’s far from wise.

Thigpen’s like a Garcia or Dilfer. Probably never look pretty, but always giving your guys a chance. Hard to back that up, after a 2-14 season, but I would lay very few of the losses at Thigpen’s feet.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Croyle was a pretty damn good QB when he was in

but if you can’t hold up past the first quarter, it doesn’t mean jack squat. Thigpen work really well in a system that doesn’t work well in the NFL. Let me put it this way, Thigpen flat SUCKED in the pro-style offense. There is nobody who will argue that. Not even him. He flourished in the spread but it was pretty obvious that the spread only worked for one half. Everyone figured it out by the second half. We were a one-trick pony last year and it got us so far. I kinda wish Croyle and Thigpen would just fuse together since they’re both pretty much polar opposites.

by jonnyu on Aug 9, 2009 3:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Concur Zode..

about all statements. Thiggy is a mobile QB with limited talent. Don’t get me wrong, loved the way he stepped in and came into his own. However, he was NEVER a consistent QB. All throughout the season he had sloppy throws and had to rely on TG as his blanket. I officially dubbed him Linus because without his blanket in TG, he wasn’t much. Croyle has the tools, but since the Don brought in another of his fellow clansmen, Matt G.will, if he performs well, undoubtedly end up at #2.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

by kcchiefsfan72 on Aug 9, 2009 3:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I go by what I see on the field

I don’t remember Croyle throwing for more than one touchdown in a game, Thigpen has.
Croyle started most of his games in 2007 and our defense was ranked 14 or 15 that year and he still couldn’t win a game. In 2008 with Thigpen he had to work with a defense ranked 31.
So my point is if you gave Thigpen that top 15 defense he would have won more games.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Aug 9, 2009 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

however

In 2007 our offensive line was rated number 32. It made it to number 26 last year, which has a lot more affect on QB play than the defense does. We sucked bad both years, and neither of these guys has gotten a fair shake to show themselves yet.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

by Zodeman on Aug 9, 2009 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thigpen is the one that made the offense better.in 2008

And Croyle has been given a fair shake,in 2007 he was given every chance to be a starter, even Green said that the QB competition was stacked in Croyle’s favor because Croyle was Herms guy. So Croyle has been given two full off seasons to get better, plus now this off season.
Thigpen was the 3rd string so he didn’t get very many snaps last off season, and still played better than Croyle in games.Big difference between playing when nobody can hit you, too a real game.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

QB skills

I dont really remember ever seeing croyle displaying the skills of a franchise QB as some would have you believe,Thiggy was our saviour last year(he saved us from being Detroit). And im guessing that Matt G will be the backup.
1.Simply because he is from NE
2.He was the 3rd stringer behind cassell last yr,whom many wanted and thought he should have beaten cassel out for the #2 spot.
And how do we know Babb doesnt have an axe to grind with Thiggy,he just seems kinda like a tool to me,always down on the chiefs.

by Bestofthewest on Aug 9, 2009 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Beyond the moves the team has made on paper

What reason does Babb have to be positive on the team? They’re a 2-14 team until proven otherwise.

by golfbard on Aug 9, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea and he’s been here alot longer than just last yr,besides i would rather hear it from an official source once something has been done, instead of BLAH BLAH babb and his guessing.
It all depends on who you listen to,Just a day or so ago everybody was ready to burn john clayton at the stake, I just dont like babb or his articles, never have.

by Bestofthewest on Aug 9, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont know if Croyle is better... his arm maybe... but

the problem with Thigpen is he is way to short to play effectively in a pro-set offense. As much as I appreciate his ability and what he did for this team last year, it’s hard for me to see them keeping Thigpen over Guiterrez. Guit is much more a proto-typical NFL QB… 6’4’, strong arm… and he already has spent at least a year in the new system. That said, I think KC will keep three QB’s on the active roster and one more on the practice squad. How that shakes out may depend more on how much Haley is planning to use the spread than it does with how well any of them besides Cassell will perform as full time starters. But with Cassell’s footwork and ability to move, even than could be moot and Thigpen may well be on his way out.

by CurtMerzFan on Aug 9, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some good info in those tweets

Babb gives both Hali and McBride an A grade for the scrimmage, as well as Dorsey. That’s some good news, especially regarding McBride, whom I hadn’t really heard anything positive about up to this point. If this keeps up, we could have a pass rush after all.

Sucks about Thiggy though. It sounds like he’s on his way out. Maybe we can extort a pick or two out of the Vikings for him. That would at least be amusing.

Gonna regret it. No way gailey let’s him go after all thigpen did to change our offense from perhaps one of the worst in the league to a top 10 offense. It’s funny how people seem to have forgotten that..

Anyone remember how fun it was watching our offense with croyle as the qb? Boring as hell and very unproductive and slow.

I will certainly agree with you that Thigpen made the offense fun to watch, and was a big improvement on what was going on with Croyle and Huard. But I think you are stretching the truth a little to say it was ever a top 10 offense.

He's talking about the 2nd half of the season.

Right about that point was when Thiggie had some 100+ QB ratings in a couple games. Considering the team around him, he was a bright spot. No question. And he’ll never win a training camp battle with Croyle.

You can blame the offense Brodie ran

on Herm for implementing three plays (run left, run right, run middle) and for Brodie for not being able to stay healthy. Sure Thigpen’s offense is gimmicky and fun and can be one that attracts fans but you can’t win. This is a QB league and you have to be able to throw the ball in key spots and key times and Thigpen can’t do that.

In these debates the point has come up repeatedly that Thiggy needs some time to develop as a pocket passer. I do hope that he gets that time and is able to pick up a lot from Cassel in terms of preparation and leadership. I like Thigpen, but I doubt that they are going to be asking any of us what we think.

Croyle and Thigpen

Does anyone remember when Aikman sucked? How about when Steve Young sucked?

Dallas was screamin for anyone but Aikman at one point for a few years, San Fran wanted Bono startin over Young, that’s including Jerry Rice and John Taylor. Look how they turned out. Cassel may be the next Grbac here in KC, I hope not, he’s definately goin to start for a year or two at least with a contract like that, whether he plays well or not. Croyle’s not Aikman and Thigpen isn’t Young, but any of these three young guys could have a great career here or somewhere else, all of them have diffferent skill sets and all three of them have what’s neccessary to be a productive player, that is if Brodie can stay healthy. All three of them deserve a chance, all three of them could be something special, but they’re not all going to get it here.

call me crazy but i think thigpen is a better qb

and the reason i think he is better is because . ON game day when it counts he doest get nervous he shows up he has poise me make plays with his feet he does what it takes to move the ball or make something happen he is a poor mans rich gannon in my eyes. as for croyle dont get me wrong i wanted to see that guy be the next rising star but he is timid on the field he throws ints all day long he makes poor reads and alway always goes to his outlet pass he panics in his progression i mean i can go on and on he makes bad throws in to coverage he just never looks comfortable in there.

i have to admit i give thigpen a lot of credit to show up on game day and have no clue his first time in the game he looked horrible but some how the next week i thought we were doomed but he ended up playing his ass off and dont know how he did it but he did it. I know for a fact if brodie was in his situation we would have been fucked.no doubt in my mind thigpen is better for the simple fact he shows up on game day and is not affraid to shine.

kb_kcstar: As usual, Thigpen was terrific when tucking and running, and a little scary when dropping back to pass. These guys want passers, though.
kb_kcstar: To elaborate, Croyle ran the second-team offense during today’s scrimmage. Tyler was No. 3, and he didn’t look great.

This sheds a little more light on what he felt about Thigpen.

Seriously folks, yes we didnt win a lot of games and yes everyone shares some of the blame, but someone up there mentioned our ‘top 10 offense’ status and that says a lot about both gailey and thiggy. Its not their fault our defense sucked. So yes, good/great offense doesnt automatically produce wins but now that we are attempting to revamp said D, why the hell would we want anything but proven winners in the driver seat? You can say Thigpen is more mobile, more durable, or more like a box of chocolates then Croyle; but to say you want a ‘proven winner’ in the driver’s seat when Thigpen is 0-fer as a starter isn’t a legitimate reason.

proven winner

I think out playing future hall of famer Brett favre is a good argument on how decent Thiggy is. and umm how many games has Croyle won? how many starts, umm i believe 0 won and what 16 starts already. and that was with a somewhat better D. fact is Thiggy would have had several more W’s under his belt if our D produced. hell if we would have had Jared Allen alone making sacks, we could have had won several more games.

Agreed

Last year and all of this off-season I have been saying we need to upgrade and QB. Then when Cassel was brought in everyone seemed to seriously think Thigpen would be able to challenge Cassel for the starting gig. Then there were all the Thigpen vs Vick blogs which made me nauseous..people were actually implying that Thigpen was a better or even matched QB as Vick lol. Come on, I’m die-hard Chiefs and will die that way, but I’m realistic. The “Thiggy” colt in KC has been strange. I mean fans were treating him like he was magically dropped over KC from the heavens. He’s an ok backup but doesn’t have what it takes to come close to starting on any NFL team.

Personally I want to see more of Guiterrez. See what he has out of curiosity as a backup.

i always knew Croyle was a good QB. i never joined in all the criticism that he took from the fans. i thought it was just plain silly. Croyle’s “problem” isn’t his problem. He has a lot of bad luck. Everytime he was out there, the O-line was playing with subs b/c of injuries and they couldn’t protect Croyle who would then get his butt kicked. last year, Albert was still learning his position when Croyle was the starter. They were still trying to work together and learn and unfortunately for Croyle they made mistakes and he had to suffer the consequences. good to see Croyle healthy and playing good again.

totally useless. His leg injury was a freak thing. If anyone got hit in the leg like that they would have been out for the season.

It is his other injuries that really bother me. GO back and watch the hit where he hurts his shoulder in the NE game. He does not get hit that hard. It is a routine QB hit. You can see right when it happens because they have a good shot of it. He doesn’t get hurt from the hit, he gets hurt when he hits the ground.

He got hurt from having a LB fall on top of him. This guy has had injury problems his entire career. A good friend of mine is a Crimson Tide fan. He doesn’t watch the NFL, he jus LOVES college football and he loves Alabama. He HATES Brodie Croyle. Every time I bring him up he gets mad. He says Croyle was terrible. He says Croyle was either hurt or throwing picks all the time an most of the Bama fans didn’t like him and were glad when he left.

Croyle is injury prone. He is too light and his frame is too small. He can’t stay on the field. We should be talking about Matt G. and Thigpen in regards to the #2 QB slot. Croyle should be cut.

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

Last season

many of us drooled at how good Brodie looked in practice so lets let this thing play out in game situations.

I just don't like the wording.

In danger of making the team??? There is no way they would cut Thigpen after last year. They could get at least a late draft pick out of him.

HAH

Dilfer got cut after winning the superbowl….business is business and in the NFL its all about whay you can do in the future not what you have done in the past

gotta admit

croyle has a hell of an arm

Before you build yourself up, you must tear somebody else down.

by Zennedy on Aug 9, 2009 10:37 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Croyle hell of an arm?

Croyle started 8 games and got 6 TD’s 8 int’s
Thigpen started 11 games 18 TD’s, 13 int’s, 3 rushing TD’s, 1 receiving TD

Croyle maybe can throw farther but is sure doesn’t look like he had a hell of an arm. Well maybe a hell of a bad arm.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

i'm speaking

strictly in arm strength

No need to be rude

Show me some stats that shows he can play in real games. Someone can have the best arm in the world but can’t preform or stay healthy in games, what good is that arm.

Is it just me or...

…are both Croyle and Thigpen not very good QBs? Neither are very good for opposite reasons. Cryole has the arm to be a NFL QB but weighs about 150 pounds, so he gets killed every time he gets hit. (especially when Albert Hanesworth hits him!) Thigpen is athletic and durable, but he literally can’t run a pro-style offense, has no leadership qualities, and is one of the least accurate QBs in the league.

It will take some time, but the best teams in the NFL have quality backups at every position. The Chiefs need to keep acquiring talent, especially at theQB position. My guess is that Gutierrez will be the #2 QB by the end of the preseason.

hes been busted

and he will continue to be busted man face it he’s just not tough enough and we are wasting a roster spot with brokie and thigpen at least has a win under his belt wake up people and give the man his credit and his spot go thiggy

A few days ago

I attempted to explain why I thought Croyle was a better option at QB if we had a stable OL and a reliable running game. I still believe that, but won’t waste anymore time debating back and forth with those who clearly disagree. That having been said I think it would be crazy to release Thiggy. If we have OL problems again this year and our passing game is again reduced to the QB trying to make a throw while running for his life then we need to have Thiggy there as insurance. I don’t care how much promise they think Matt G. has Thiggy brings a different skill set to the table that the other QBs on the roster don’t. So even though I’m not a fan of Thiggy being our starting QB I would never want to seem him released (maybe traded if someone would cough up a mid round pick).

Ten sacks in a season! For crying out loud that's what I used to average per game using DT in Tecmo Bowl!

yes, it's a tiresome debate sometimes

I have watched very little of the Chiefs because I was boycotting them during Herm era. So, I can’t say very much about either of them with any credibility. However, as to Croyle, it seems fairly clear that he is just too frail. Even with a great OL he will still get hit from time to time and the evidence shows he simply isn’t built for it. As to Thigpen, it makes me really uncomfortable to keep the guy IF we need to run a gimmick or college style offense in order for us to succeed. Those kind of offenses simply do not last very long in the NFL. Thigpen may have some residual trade value right now. That will wane if we keep him and he rides the bench – which he will.

Hopes fade once again from blue to red. Go New Chiefs!!

This idea is absolutely ridiculous

If Tyler Thigpen isn’t on this year’s team i will lose a lot of faith in Scott Pioli and Todd Hailey.

We are talking about one of the only bright spots on our team last year. Did they not watch the film? Ya Thigpen isn’t a pocket passer and doesn’t compare to most NFL QBs BUT when you put him in the right situation (the spread), the Chiefs miraculously turned into a top 15 offense. With Croyle and Huard — we were the WORST offense.

Anyone buying this Babb crap needs to re-evaluate. Croyle has a gun, Croyle has a good throwing arm. So does Alex Smith. So did Ryan Leaf. There is a LOT MORE to being a QB that your arm and your form. You have to be tough and make plays. And that’s what Thigpen has proven to do. I don’t care if he’s a 40% thrower in the pocket, when he scrambles he is a weapon and throws with a high enough percentage to get the Chiefs 20+ pts per game.

If they cut him I will lose my sht.

A new GM, a new coach, a new year. A new sense of hope and pride.

Hopefully all this Love for Brodie will up his draft choice value and we can get something for him in trade. I already think we could get about a #4 or #5 for Thiggy, but nothing for Croyle.
