Chiefs Training Camp Update 8/8 PM
Updated: 5:18 PM
Family fun day is underway in River Falls, WI, at the Kansas City Chiefs training camp, as this picture from the Chiefs twitter feed shows.
There is a scrimmage today from ~2-4 PM, which we'll have notes on hopefully before the Hall of Fame induction.
No pictures up yet from yesterday's practices. Hopefully they get some up soon.
Update: We've got some tweets from Josh Looney coming. Here are a few highlights:
- Ryan Succop nails a 58-yard field goal
- Tyson Jackson gets his first training camp sack
We've got more updates for you, after the jump.
General Stuff
- This is a somewhat of a dress rehearsal for the coaching staff as well with the first preseason game just one week away. The headsets are out and Haley’s staff is putting the press box to full use to mock a gameday atmosphere. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
Offense
- Cassel to Darling on a five-yard corner route to the back left corner or the end zone (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- Cassel showing some serious scramble ability today (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- Cassel did show some athleticism in the series by avoiding a heavy pass rush and scrambling seven yards to set up the field goal try. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- Thigpen to TE Jake O'Connel on a 13-yard wheel route for the first offensive TD of the day (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- Cassel hit RB Jamaal Charles on a shovel for a nice gain and then took the next play into the red zone with some nice agility on a scramble. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- RB Jackie Battle then rumbled his way for a first-down to the five before Cassel connected with WR Devard Darling on a corner route in the back left of the end zone for a TD. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- The scrimmage turned situational when the ball was placed on the two-yard line for a third-and-goal situation. It took the offense two plays to score, but when they did it was a beauty as RB Jackie Battle went up and over the pile of linemen for the TD. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- QB Matt Gutierrez got his first opportunity of the afternoon and connected with TE Tom Crabtree to move the chains on third down. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- Two new groups took the field with Thigpen hitting Toomer on a 25-yard route across the middle. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- The same two groups did battle once more when the thunder started to roll across the rural Wisconsin sky. This time it was Thigpen’s legs who did some work, taking a scramble inside the five-yard line before hitting FB Jed Collins in the flats on a play-action pass. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- Croyle completed a pass to wide receiver Amani Toomer who fumbled the football after being ripped down. The ball was recovered by the defense. (UW-RF)
- Thigpen then dropped back to pass but was forced from the pocket and scrambled to his right and went out of bounds for a 20-yard gain. (UW-RF)
- Amani Toomer fumbled a 13 yard completion from Cassel (WPI $$$)
Defense
- Defense gets its revenge with back-to-back INTs...CB Travis Daniels and CB Ricardo Colclough (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- Your #1 pick DE Tyson Jackson records his first sack of training camp (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- BIG HIT - DJ puts a lick on WR Amani Toomer across the middle to force a fumble!!!! (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- The first-team offense opened things up with RB Larry Johnson converting a third-and-short situation near mid-field, but it was the defense who got on the board first when QB Matt Cassel mishandled a snap and DE Wallace Gilberry took the loose football 50-yards to the house. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- LB Tamba Hali eventually thwarted the drive with a sack of QB Brodie Croyle to set-up K Ryan Succop with his second FG opportunity of the day. (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
- Pollard coming up with some big hits (Josh Looney on Twitter)
- Continuing the trend as seen in practice thus far, cornerback Maurice Leggett spent time as the defense’s nickel back. (UW-RF)
- On quarterback Brodie Croyle’s first drive, linebacker Derrick Johnson had a would-be sack had the team been allowed to sack the quarterback. (UW-RF)
- Defensive end Glenn Dorsey and linebacker Tamba Hali had sacks on Croyle. (UW-RF)
- On second-and-twelve, cornerback Brandon Carr nearly picked off a Thigpen pass. Carr would later have a successful quarterback pressure on Thigpen. (UW-RF)
Special Teams
- Succop's 58-yarder was right down the pipe with some distance to spare (Josh Looney on Twitter)

I have a fanshot with some updates too...but this is great
2:44 PM – The second group featured the first-team defense taking on the second-team offense. LB Derrick Johnson appeared to have forced the second turnover of the day when he laid a huge hit on WR Amani Toomer across the middle. A defensive penalty, however, kept the drive alive for the offense. LB Tamba Hali eventually thwarted the drive with a sack of QB Brodie Croyle to set-up K Ryan Succop with his second FG opportunity of the day. This time Succop drove the kick home from 58 YARDS OUT!

This should answer a couple of questions
1. Does Succop have good range?
2. Can Brodie take a sack without being gone for the rest of the season?

#2 Wow you're right
I halfway expected it to be followed with “Brokie Croyle sustained three broken ribs and a fractured collar bone in the exchange, and will be out for the season”.

Terrible.
Lets get Barth back in there.
I could get more sacks with my sack

First series didn't go so well for the offense
2:30 PM – The first-team offense opened things up with RB Larry Johnson coverting a third-and-short situation near mid-field, but it was the defense who got on the board first when QB Matt Cassel mishandled a snap and DE Wallace Gilberry took the loose football 50-yards to the house. Gilberry celebrated his score with a classic spike.

At least the D didn't score on the second series
2:35 PM – The day’s first two series go to the defense as the red shirts hold tight to force a missed field goal. Cassel did show some athleticism in the series by avoiding a heavy pass rush and scrambling seven yards to set up the field goal try.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Thiggy finds the endzone
From 13 yards out:
2:49 PM – The third offense and third defense squared off in the day’s thrid grouping. QB Tyler Thigpen guided his squad downfield before hooking up with TE Jake O’Connell on a wheel route. Thigpen and the rookie TE celebrated with a chest bump.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Love Tyson
2:56 PM – Thigpen stayed on the field following his successful drive with the third-team to guide the second-team offense against the first-team defense. It was a quick series when DE Tyson Jackson recorded a sack (in only his second practice) to force a three-and-out. The two groups lined up once more for another series that yielded the same result.

Another try
3:00 PM – Thigpen and the twos were given a third set of downs against the first-team defense, but the set was cut short after a first-down conversion because the groups had reached their 10-play alottment.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Cassel TD
3:02 PM – A very impressive four-play span by the first offense. Cassel hit RB Jamaal Charles on a shovel for a nice gain and then took the next play into the red zone with some nice agility on a scramble. RB Jackie Battle then rumbled his way for a first-down to the five before Cassel connected with WR Devard Darling on a corner route in the back left of the end zone for a TD.

Good D or bad O?
3:05 PM – The defense got revenge just two snaps later with the same two groups on the field when CB Travis Daniels picked off Cassel’s attempt down the left sideline. The two groups reset once more and the defense continued to find the football when CB Ricardo Colclough picked off a pass to end the segment.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Too many turnovers all over the place
sounds like really sloppy football and not guys making plays. I dunno…

Well it IS the first real scrimmage LOL
But yes, I expected things to be a bit sloppy. Sounds like there are some guys making plays though, without video it’s pretty hard to tell if it is sloppy or people making good plays. Two INT for Cassel and a fumble returned for TD is not a stellar day. At least he did make some good plays too.

Right
New defense, new QB….I think we’re going to learn the early goings of the season will be tough, especially with the schedule.

Another FG
3:14 PM – Two new groups took the field with the offense led by Croyle. Croyle led things off with a quick start on a nice pass across the middle to WR Amani Toomer down to the 24. RB Dantrell Savage then broke several tackles on a short pass that put the football near the 15. That was as far as the offense would get though and K Ryan Succop booted another FG, this time from 34 yards out.

From the mothership
3:24 PM – QB Matt Gutierrez got his first opportunity of the afternoon and connected with TE Tom Crabtree to move the chains on third down. He found WR Quentin Lawrence just a few plays later in the end zone. Lawrence was well covered and made a great mid-air adjustment to come down with the TD catch.

love it
Succop showing his distance..of course he can hit that far, its the accurate part that Im glad hes getting down.
Lawrence way to step up finally
TJ, so glad you came to camp in shape…thank you.
the turnovers may not be cassel’s fault, I wonder if a lot of it is bad routes, or lining up on the wrong side or something with timing.
To ME, It sounds like the defense is forcing things to happen, the D is making cassel move, which is great.

way to go charles
I think Matt G may take Thiggys job, the clapping was probably for charles, we need big plays.

Sounds like
There were some good plays made on both sides of the ball. Probably too early to hope for a lot of consistency from either side…but this early the defense is usually ahead of the offense.
Hali and Jackson both get sacks. Several interceptions, but then several nice long passes completed too. Sounds like Charles had a really good scrimmage. Be interesting to hear how the running game looked other than just the few plays we heard about.

agreed
love that TJ came to camp ready to go.
But it is true usually the D is ahead of the O at this point especially with new players/systems in place….the O is figuring out assignments and the D is blitzing from all over the place.
Charles did play well, love it, but here is my question
if they have to spent over 12 more mil…who the heck are they after? Boldin?
by SDChief on Aug 8, 2009 4:03 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for the updates Zodeman;)
and a good question sdchief asked about our salary cap minimum, do we still need to spend $12mil to meet it? If we do, then on who?

it's nice to hear TJ got a sack
but remember, he sacked thigpen, which means he was going up against non-starters.

okay, fine :)
Since some people considered Monday the earliest TJ would practice, I was just glad to see him active after being a week behind the others. So even if it wasn’t pro-bowl level just yet, it was good news to me.

Have to love the connections
Haley’s parents were still in River Falls for the scrimmage today. Nice to have one of the best personnel guys ever to be looking in. You can bet Todd will be asking Dad some questions about what he saw. From the mothership
"It does put pressure on me," Haley said of having his father in attendance. "Then when I see him over there with the roster, looking at it and stuff. I will try to his it to our advantage. I’ll definitely be asking him some questions tonight.""I just told him to kind of watch our big guys inside," Haley said. "Specifially those defensive linemen. Just for my own benefit.":

I think the d-line's deeper than o-line.
#1s or #2s, they’re probably giving the #2s on offense real headaches, and #2 D versus #1 O seemed to do pretty well.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
