Chiefs Training Camp Update 8/7 AM

Updated: 12:45 PM

Curiously, we don't have any updates from Bob Gretz at CBS Sports yet today. He's usually right on top of the updates, often doing it in real time. Is this part of the Chiefs' crackdown on Twitter-like real time updates? Not sure but it definitely could be.  Gretz is on his way to Canton for DT!

This afternoon's practice is from 4:30 to 6:30 PM and we may end up seeing Tyson Jackson on the field for that. Cross your fingers!

We've got updates from this morning's practice, after the jump. As usual, we'll update this post with info as it comes in.

Star-divide

General stuff

  • No Tyson Jackson at the morning practice (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  • ESPN's John Clayton is in attendance (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  • It rained during practice which caused for slippery footing (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  • The rain favored the defense (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  • John Clayton says that the daily "situational talks" Haley has with team is straight from the Bill Parcells practice books (Josh Looney on Twitter)
  • Right before Head Coach Todd Haley gave his post-practice press conference, he was overheard telling ESPN Analyst John Clayton that his father would be at the afternoon practice today. (UW-RF)
  • You have to admire the officials standing in the pouring rain for all of practice.  It was an hour before referee Mike Carey decided it was time for jacket. (UW-RF)

Offense

  • Thigpen with a nice scramble to dive over the left pylon on the final play of practice (Josh Looney on Twitter)

Defense

  • Glenn Dorsey made a nice play in the backfield during OL vs. DL drills (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  • Derrick Johnson and Brandon Carr both made nice pass break ups
  • Maurice Leggett picked off a pass....defense possibly celebrated with a "rain dance" (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  • Make no mistake: Whenever Tyson Jackson arrives at camp, he's VERY far behind. And so is the Chiefs' defense. (Kent Babb on Twitter)
  • During 7-on-7, the defensive first-string consisted of linebackers Mike Vrabel, Corey Mays, Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali and defensive ends Alex Magee and Alfonso Boone and defensive tackle Ron Edwards.(UW-RF)
  • During 11-on-11, the starters included safeties Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page, linebackers Mike Vrabel, Corey Mays, Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson, cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers, defensive ends Alex Magee and Alfonso Boone and defensive tackle Ron Edwards. (UW-RF)
  • Wide receiver Rodney Wright continues to impress in camp.  During a 1-on-1 drill he put a sick move on the cornerback leaving him in the dust and getting himself wide open for the easy completion. (UW-RF)
  • Wide receiver Bobby Engram had the most problems catching the ball today.  Engram dropped three balls during three different drills.  He dropped one during 1-on-0, one during 6-on-0, and his final drop came during 7-on-7. (UW-RF)
  • Running back Jamaal Charles coughed up the ball - it was recovered by linebacker Corey Smith. (UW-RF)
  • Receiver Dwayne Bowe had the lone drop of the 11 on 11 session. (UW-RF)

Special Teams

  • Worked on kick return coverage (Josh Looney at the Mothership)
  •

    Babb

What is with the hating on the D? I know its just camp, but by what ive read on the 11 on 11’s, the D has been intercepting passes, breaking up passes, sacking the QB from the corner spot/LB spot and forcing fumbles for TD’s….

I know they arent a top 10 D yet, and have a lot to learn, but I think Magee is further along than expected, and considering hes key to the 3-4…thats huge…and the secondary is set..

    Really

Im just saying he should be questioning the offense

    I don

    Sorry.

I don’t understand it either. It seems like the D is making plays all over the place? What is the problem?

    I understand

that they had a bad year last season, and basically for a long time…but yeah, they have outperformed the offense…I hear of goal line stands, and the D just flat out dominating to where they are constantly celebrating…

And Haley is always screaming at the offense….

Oh well…cant wait till the 15th.

by SDChief on Aug 7, 2009 12:05 PM CDT reply actions

    Babb is just babbling

The D has been all over the place and basically dominating the O. That’s just stupid!! And I know Tyson has missed quite a few practices but honestly I don’t think it’s going to make that big of a difference…DLine is about the best position that could miss practice if they have too….all he has to do is get in there and cause some havic..he will be fine

Actually his comment doesn't make sense

i think it might have been a mistake.

“Make no mistake: Whenever Tyson Jackson arrives at camp, he’s VERY far behind. And so is the Chiefs’ defense. (Kent Babb on Twitter)”

WhenI read TJ would be way behind I thought he was indicating that the defense was playing well and picking up the schemes and that TJ would have to catch up.

Then he said “so is the Chiefs Defense.” I think maybe he meant to say Offense. How can TJ be very far behind in a D that is very far behind? Wouldn’t it be easier to catch up with a group of underachievers?

Someone please help me understand this.

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

by Patrick Allen on Aug 7, 2009 12:09 PM CDT reply actions

yeah it doesn't make much sense.

But if he did mean the defense, what does that say about our offense….

I really think he meant to say offense.

I just twittered him about it. Hopefully he will respond.

    Let me know

I’ll take an average Offense with a great defense over the other way, any day

    I'm with you there

If you watched Pittsburgh go through the playoffs last year you have tp be thinking that way.

    Agree

I think we win more games with a Top 5 defense and the 16th ranked offense.

Hey, it landed Trent Dilfer a freakin’ ring…and Cassel is slightly better than Dilfer =)

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

    Another great example

    The ravens.

Did you see how good their defense made flacco look?

    can we beat Ravens

    3-0?

Hopes fade once again from blue to red. Go New Chiefs!!

by kabrink on Aug 7, 2009 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

    Maybe,

Just maybe, he is saying the TJ is behind and because of that, the whole defense is set back some.

IDK, just trying to figure it out

by Spunky on Aug 7, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

    i dont think

he made a mistake… i think he’s just an idiot looking at it with (understandably?) prejudiced eyes.

let him think what he wants, i think the 15th will be here faster than we know it :)

nfl is looking for that yao ming money

    No Kidding

Im glad its not just me who found that to be a bit strange.

The first preseason game will really show a lot…Ive been reading of guys like Mays making plays, maybe we have a few 25/26 year old guys ready to break out…

I dont see how our secondary isnt top 10…for awhile…the d-line seems sharp, our LB’s are old, but they are really doing a great job at keeping them healthy.

Day by day I wonder if Thigpen gets dealt, then KC deals the thigpen pick and the pick from Atlanta, for Boldin.

by SDChief on Aug 7, 2009 12:17 PM CDT reply actions

    Mays is looking good

He is kind of a beast…I was really happy with the way the line backers looked today with him in there

    Bobby Sippio with the Lions

The Lions replaced him(Damion Cook) on the roster with wideout Bobby Sippio, just one of the stars from Hard Knocks with the Kansas City Chiefs two years ago.

Talking about updates from bob gretz

Isn’t he a representative on the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee? I believe he must have gone to Canton for the weekend then. I don’t think we will receive any training camp updates from him till he comes back.

by indianchief on Aug 7, 2009 12:59 PM CDT reply actions

    Beat me to it....

According to his website he is on his way to canton.

I think Babbs comments might be due to Clayton...

Clayton is far from the sharpest tool in the shed(Chiefs interested in Vick? cmon…) and Babb said that the knowledge between them is flowing or some garbage. Maybe Babb is just enamored with Claytons “stardom” and is spewing some moronic comment Clayton suggested.

If i were an NFL player

and my contract wasn’t done, then id still be practicing…(you can still do that right?) I dont know why they hold out….yes money is a big deal but so is being good. I wouldnt want to be a bust and i would be working my ass off. Hes a rookie too, and hes behind…Stupid move on Jacksons part, IMO.

by Wrestler189s on Aug 7, 2009 1:24 PM CDT reply actions

    Unfortunately not...

Nope, they’re not allowed to practice (with the team) until the contract is in place. At least that’s what our fellow AP members who are far more knowledgable than me have said in the past. Not sure if that’s an NFL thing, and Player’s Association thing, or what. Hopefully he’d kept up on his own, or maybe has been back in KC working out at the facilities there? Guess we’ll see soon enough.

by Archyrr on Aug 7, 2009 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, it's really not up to him.

I kinda feel bad for the players sometimes because it’s like they’re being held hostage by their agents. I’m 99% sure that Tyson would rather be out there practicing than under this giant blanket of scrutiny. He knows he’s getting paid no matter what and I’m sure he’d rather just get up to speed as soon as possible with the rest of the team.

by jonnyu on Aug 7, 2009 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually you might want to rethink that....

If said player got hurt, I don’t think they would be liable to even offer them a contract. It’s probably the reason no one practices until they get it.

by Chiefsuntilidie on Aug 7, 2009 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

    True

Good point. I was just wondering if it was an NFL thing or what…
Hopefully Jackson will catch up fast…

by Wrestler189s on Aug 7, 2009 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Engram has been dropping passes all camp. He might be done, in which case the Toomer signing makes a little more sense, becuase both of them on the roster would not be a good thing. .

by dablueguy on Aug 7, 2009 2:42 PM CDT reply actions

    On the new D...

Listen fellow KC fans, having been a player and position coach at the small college level I can tell you that during training camp and even the first couple games, the D always, or almost always has the advantage…that is unless most of the offense is filled with returning starters using the same scheme as the previous season. The reason the D seems to be doing well already is simple: Defensive schemes are more simplistic and easier to implement than offensive schemes. And with as many new (to KC) and young players as the Chiefs have this year it only makes sense that the D is excelling. And that’s a great thing given the pathetic play of last year’s Defense. GO KC!!!

    Welcome to AP!

And thanks for that info. It’s always nice to hear from folks around here with experience at the college/pro level.

    What positions have you coached?

    Predictions.
    1. Tank Tyler will end up surprising everyone and be the anchor of our line.

    positions coached?

I coached offensive and defensive line. I also played center for 8 years through hs and college. Playing center you need to know what everyone else is doing on the line…and call out the defensive front when you get to the line. So you get a lot of knowhow without realizing it. I was undersized when I was playing, giving up 40-50 lbs to most NT’s and DT’s so I had to be anal about technique and I think that made me a better coach. BTW the note Haley made on Albert having to relearn and hone his technique because he lost 40 lbs. and can no longer just push people around because he weighs more. It’s the NFL after all. Everyone’s good, and so everyone has to step up his game or get released.

The future is ours KC Chiefs fans!!!!!
