Per a league source, agent Eugene Parker is telling the 49ers that Crabtree will sit out the season re-enter the draft in 2010, unless the team gives Crabtree what he wants.

wow...didnt even know this was possible..Crabtree 2010?

That was a different situation.

He declared himself for the entry draft early after the court case initial said the NFL rule that said you had to be two years removed from high school was invalid. The case was the overturned, but he was then ineligible for both the draft and to return to the NCAA. I thought at the time the NCAA was ridiculous for not allowing him to return to college after the reversal of the court ruling.

The better case is Bo Jackson. It appeared to work out for him, but it is a much different era. He was drafted 1st by the Bucs and then 183rd the next year. How much would have that decision cost him now. The answer is tens of millions.

Of course Crabtree can’t play baseball to kill the time. Crabtree is crazy if he thinks he gets dratfed higher next year. There will be a huge red flag on this guy. Not only will he set his career back, but in the end he will make less money. It is all posturing. There is no way that he sits the year.

great..

Now the chiefs can get him..hopefully he drops far enough in the draft next year

by Chiefs190 on Aug 6, 2009 11:27 AM CDT reply actions

Oh darn...

What a rough life…. Instead of making 25million he might make 18million to play a sport.

Baby…

If I was Crabtree I would get a new agent and tell them to get a dang contract done so I can play some football.

1st Pick – $10mil – 2 years
2nd Pick – $ 8 mil – 2 years
3rd Pick – $ 7 mil – 2 years
4th – 10 – $ 5 mil
so forth….

then after 2 years, they can get a bigger contract. Haven’t played a damn snap in their life in the NFL. LAME!

by SwimCoach on Aug 6, 2009 11:30 AM CDT reply actions

no kidding...

Ridiculous….I thought football players wanted to play? They want to sit out now? hmm

by HeatherChiefsLvr on Aug 6, 2009 11:33 AM CDT reply actions

Yea really time for a new agent....

For starters next years draft is much deeper then this years and he’s no shoe in to be a top 10 pick. Then consider these actions and tell me a team thats going to be eager to deal with this next year. These agents are doing a disservice to these young players. They’re supposed to be acting in their best interest but that goes beyond dollars and cents and Parker clearly not considering that.

Not only that but what about money lost? Even if he moves up one or two spots how long will it take him to make up the money he will have lost from this year and then not to mention one extra year further from your second contract.

What a mess and Id guarantee Parker is the #1 reason why Jackson isnt a done deal.

Don’t know anything else about Parker, but that just seems ridiculous. Like his value will go up after not playing football for a year. Or get injured. Or be labeled as a problem.

Not only that

But the Niners still hold the rights to Crabtree whether he signs now or not. If he sits out the 09 season he won’t be allowed to talk to or workout for any scouts until draft day. There’s absolutely no way a team is dropping a 1-20 pick on him after the shitstorm he caused in SF, compounded by the fact that he didn’t do much at the Combine this year (and can’t next year due to league rules) and will have been out of the game for more than a year by the time training camp starts up in 2010.

I think we can all agree the Raiders are a ways away from being a threat and with guys like Cromatie talking who will use any excuse to blame the Chargers poor playoff performance, other than himself, I don’t think SD is going to be too much of a threat for much longer. It worked out OK for Bo Jackson to be drafted twice ;-)

But yeah Crabtree has done nothing to impress me ever since he started getting attention right before the draft. I’d bet that he’s the driving force behind this stunt and not so much his agent. Crabtree is an egomaniac and a jerk from what I’ve gathered. It does’t surprise me that he thinks that he deserves special treatment to get paid out of his slotted contract value.

I don't see how this helps Crabtree.

1) He’s going to be out a year. That’s a year of development time lost. (And, if I recall correctly, he came out of college early anyway, didn’t he?)

2) He’s going to be labelled by every personnel man in the NFL as a problem child. Guys like T.O. can get away with it (to an extent; he’s still a locker room cancer who gets dropped by teams that need him around) because you’ve got the skills to back it up. Crabtree isn’t T.O.

3) There are going to be other guys drafted ahead of him next year, if only for the reasons I’ve just listed which only hurts his contract potential. If he actually goes through with this, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him fall out of the first round (and possibly even out of the second round) after this mess.

Too bad that game isn't in Oakland.

It’d be nice to beat them there first, then we could have had an easier job completing the sweep at Arrowhead …

So, looking ahead at the season: Two wins vs. Oakland. Two wins vs. Denver (they’re the ones looking at 2-14 now). Possibly a win over San Diego. We’ll ‘upset’ Dallas (they’ll be 5-11 / 6 – 10 this year). We win two out of three against Cleveland, Buffalo and Cincinatti and we might be looking at winning the AFC West.

by Joel Thorman on Aug 6, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the draft

simply guarentees you exclusive barganing rights to that player for the year. If the player does not want to work for you or refuses to work for the money offered that his his choice.

However, he probably cannot become an NFL free agent for a year because the 49ers have exclusive barganing rights for a year.

Thus if he wants the big bucks he has to reenter the draft.

This is all just a guess but it seems about right.

by worc on Aug 6, 2009 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Correct

Crabtree isn’t allowed to talk with scouts or anything either because the 49s hold the rights to him per league rules.

Personally, I think it’s all just a ploy for attention to try and put pressure on the Niners to sweeten their offer. It is one, however, that could easily end up backfiring on him and greatly reducing his chances at a long-term career while also causing a sharp downturn in the value of his 2010 contract.

I don’t see this ending well for Crabtree if he continues with the tough guy act for much longer.

I hope they take a stance an our negotiations are going to be much easier because parker cant afford two top 10 picks that are going to reenter the draft!

by pmwz on Aug 6, 2009 12:47 PM CDT reply actions

Possible repercussions

1. Crabs (yes his nickname should be synonymous with an STD) sits out for a year and a new CBA gets put in place WITH a rookie wage scale – so even if he does get picked near the same spot, it will still be for far less money than this year. Loser = Crabs

2. This stupid, moronic stunt by Parker is the straw that breaks the camel’s back and leads to the institution of the rookie wage scale, somewhat along the lines of the NBA system. I’m guessing other agents in the NFL that understand and go along with the “slotting” scale as it is now are wishing Parker would keep his damn mouth shut and get a deal done. Loser = Crabs

3. They finally do get a deal done at the standard or maybe slightly higher slotted value. Now he has to live down this whole stunt with his team, coaches and fans. Let’s see if Singletary makes him cry for real this time. The prima donna stigma sticks. Loser = Crabs

4. They actually have him sit a year and his value drops like an anvil in the ocean. Loser = Crabs

Listen, you got picked where you did because the other teams did not think you were valuable enough to take you higher. Teams don’t pass you by simply to spite you. You’ll get what you’re worth. In the case of most 1st rounders – you’ll get MORE than what you’re really worth just because of your slot. The damage is done, shut up and get on the field as fast as you can so you can try to prove that you’re actually worth all of this hassle.

loser = Crabs!

Couple interesting notes...

1. Parker promised crabtree that he would be a top 5 pick and may be doing all this to save his own skin and keep his client but getting him top 5 money.

2. Parker said that Crabtree will re-enter the draft(probably a bluff) if the team doesn’t give him what he wants but according to a team source Parker hasnt even put forward a proposal yet.

Nicely done!

I didnt read all the comments so this may have been mentioned..but..

Eugene Parker sounds like a bad agent. He’s saying Crabtree should get a better deal because he was predicted to go higher than what he was. But he WASNT. OBVIOUSLY all the teams who worked him out were (he did get to work out didnt he? Or did his foot injury prevent any workouts?) not impressed enough with him to take him that high. If the Jets traded up to nab Sanchez, why wasnt anyone impressed with Crabtree to trade up and snatch him up? Because he played in the Big 12 against very few top talent CB’s? Who knows?

The guy was measured 6’1 3/8". Not real tall but he weighs 215lbs and that size makes him seem bigger. He has all the athletic ability in the world. His physical attributes say he could be good. But on that note, Sippio was a physical beast and look what happened to him. Anyways..Crabs didnt participate at the combine and was Below Average on the wonderlic test for his position (WR’s average 17 and he scored a 15, though Im not sure how big of a difference the scores are since I dont know the scoring process)

Its no surprise to me that he slipped. Brady Quinns slip was ALOT more surprising to me (we should all be surprised about that..we were 1 pick away from having him)

Now, lets talk about Jackson

I heard the Chiefs are saying Jackson wasnt supposed to be drafted that high. The same arguement Parker suggested with Crabtree going higher than he did. But now he flips the script and says he was drafted at 3 and should be paid Matt Ryan-like money because he was #3 last year. He’s contridicting himself in the media and that is not helping Jacksons holdout. Now that the Chiefs know what his ground was on Crabtree, they can easily say Jackson wasnt even considered a top 10 pick.

And Curry? Well..the Chiefs are waiting on Curry, the Seahawks are waiting on Jackson.

I hate to say it…and I hope to god that Im wrong and that I eat my words..and I would gladly do so..but I have a bad feeling about this contract dispute. Parker has made it clear that he doesnt care that his clients get on the field fast enough to work out and give themselves a chance to live up to the contract. Of course, most rookies dont live up to their massive rookie contracts. He sees money and thats it.

Especially Jackson was not suppose to be a top 5 pick so in Parker’s view he shouldn’t get paid that.

Parker's pushing as hard from his client's side as he can.

9ers are pushing back. It’s free enterprise. At worst, Crabtree will be slotted according to where he was picked, but there’s a chance that Parker could get more for him by dragging his heels. In the here-and-now, there’s little incentive for Parker to worry about rules changes in reaction to his antics. And I’m hopeful there ARE rules changes.

At the time of the draft, Crabtree looked to be a steal for the 44-to-9ers. Not so much, today.
