Chiefs Connection Strikes Again with Former Patriots QB

You've heard us talk a lot about the Chiefs connection or the Pioli/Haley/Parcells (PHP) connection.  The vast majority of players, coaching staff and front office personnel that have made their way to Kansas City since the commencement of the Pioli regime on January 13th, and later the Haley era on February 6th, have some sort of connection to GM Scott Pioli, head coach Todd Haley or Bill Parcells.

That's not a bad thing.  Pioli is coming from the most successful franchise possibly of all time, Haley learned under the tutelage of Parcells, and Parcells has been successful everywhere he's gone.

In light of the recent announcement that the Chiefs used their placement on the waiver wire to pick up former Patriots quarterback Matt Gutierrez, I wanted to look at the PHP connection again.

After the jump, I've listed all of the Pioli/Haley/Parcells connections the Chiefs have made since January.

Gutierrez is a nice pick up. Lots of Pats Fans wanted to keep him and cut Cassel after last exhibition season when Gutierrez severely outplayed Cassel. He doesn’t have a particularly good arm, but he has alot of field presence and he’s a big tough guy like Cassel. Wouldn’t be surprised if he makes the final 3, and causes either a Croyle cut or Thigpen trade.

don't remind us

I still like Gutz and was glad to see him picked up by a team so quickly. It’s a tough time to be cut, or rather it’s a tough time to join a new team mid-camp with a lot to learn.

Keep the faith!

Not to spoil the party

but with a net as big as Pioli/Parcells/Haley, with 10+ teams between them, you could probably do that for most teams in the league.

The test of this theory would be to count the players that fall under some other coaching tree. Marty/Cowher/etc.

You're right

And we’ve talked about that before, how it’s not that unusual. But it’s still interesting to note that they want their guys….they’re all 3-4 guys which makes it a little unique, at least for the defensive side of the ball.

Gutierrez left off!

Doesn’t he make 13? Wasn’t there speculation last year in Pats camp that he would be Brady’s backup instead of Cassel?

He looked good in PreSeason games

But Cassel was going against the other team’s better defense (I won’t say best because alot of starters don’t play in preseason), and Gutierrez went against the second string.

He never really threatened Cassel’s day job.

The more you know, the more you know that you don't know.

Rodney Wright connection?

Commenter Artimus Clyde made this connection between Fresno State and Belichick. Not sure if that qualifies for a link to Pioli or not.

Just a Note on Rodney
I watched just about all his games at Fresno State, and the guy was our number 1 receiver along side Bernard Berrian. I always thought Wright was just as good. Even though Berrian was more explosive, better in the return game, and translated into the pro’s better obviously.

But a lot of the big plays Wright made were on those little bubble screens and quick passes that New England seemed to run all the time a couple of years ago. I wonder if this is had anything to do with why Pioli took a shot on him, especially since the Patriots seemed to grab a lot of Fresno state guys due to the Pat Hill/ Bellicheck connection.

Muir and Carthon

Muir was OL line coach at NYJ under Parcells along side Haley and Pioli.
Carthon was RB under Parcells in NY and on the Cowboys staff with Parcells and Haley.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Yeah, but what’s a little incest between friends and guys in locker rooms … ?

Is it still the Chiefs?

That’s probably the question on the minds of many fans. This team is going to be unrecognizable from last years team which is probably a good thing. Is there something about a Chiefs team that makes it a Chiefs team (other than promising a lot and not delivering)? You know when you look at the Steelers for example that they have something that identifies them as Steelers in their style of play, likewise for the Raiders (hehe). The Chiefs, I haven’t known long enough but I hear they used to have a real D. I’m sure at some point all these imports will gel and we will happily call them Chiefs.

Blame my wife!
Waiting until August!

To quote our local TV station's teaser bumper last year after the draft:

“Find out why you’ll need a “rooster” while watching Chiefs games this year. Tonight at 10…"

Seriously.

…brilliant minds they have up there.
