So the cutting of Ingle Martin wasn't made in anticipation of first round pick Tyson Jackson signing. It was to make room for QB Matt Gutierrez. He was claimed off of waivers from, you guessed it, the New England Patriots.
The Kansas City Chiefs have claimed QB Matt Gutierrez off of waivers from the New England Patriots, a league source told Scout.com. To make room for Gutierrez, the Chiefs waived QB Ingle Martin.
Gutierrez was waived this morning by the Patriots. Former Patriot Vince Redd was signed just recently as well, also off of waivers. Because of the Chiefs poor record last year, they get third dibbs on the waiver wire.
I admittedly know little about Gutierrez so here's some info on the Idaho St. grad:
After going undrafted in the 2007 NFL Draft, Gutierrez was signed by the New England Patriots on May 8 as an undrafted free agent. Gutierrez played in his first career regular season game on September 9 against the New York Jets and completed his first regular-season pass for a 15-yard gain against the Miami Dolphins on December 23. He appeared in five games with the team as a rookie while being inactive for 11 others.
During the 2008 preseason, Gutierrez completed 29 out of 45 passes for 362 passing yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. On August 30, Gutierrez was part of the final cuts as the Patriots cut down to the mandatory 53-man roster. He was re-signed to the team's practice squad on September 10, then promoted to the active roster on September 13 after a season-ending injury to starter Tom Brady. He was inactive for the remaining 14 games of the season.
The Patriots waived Gutierrez on August 3, 2009 after signing quarterback Andrew Walter.

I have nothing against Gutierrez, but
do we really need 4 QBs with so many other holes to fill?
Sure we can have him do the grunt passing in camp and then throw him on the PS, but I would like to use that spot on another position of need that might make the active roster.

If Cassel goes down…then Thiggy goes down you better believe we will be picking up a veteran QB FA….Pioli will not put this franchise in the hands of Matt Gutierrez….that is also if he beats Brodie out for the 3rd string job. We can characterize it as off-the-field problems. It’s probably best to stay away from comments like that.
I mean...
He’s interesting, let me put it that way. I think a guy that caught 65 balls for 761 yards in only 10 starts and 12 appearances is worth taking a closer look at.
There’s some stuff out there about his work ethic not being up to par and of course, the off-the-field issues are always cited.
Who knows? Maybe the Chiefs already have looked into and decided, ‘No, he’s not for us.’ Or maybe they’re keeping an eye on him and staying in touch with his agent.

Dude is an interesting player
Ran a 4.56 at the combine but only put up 13 reps on the bench press. He played OLB in a 3-4 in college and looked to me like he had some good speed in the highlight video on YouTube which I’ll post when I get to my computer. Sorry iPhone technology doesn’t go that far. I like what I see and hear and really would rather see him ahead of studebaker because he is more polished as an OLB and less of a project IMO. But his strength is what he would have to work on.
