Long ball threat?

While I like the Toomer signing, it does make you wonder where the long ball threat is. Bowe, Toomer, and Engram are all possession receivers. Bradley is a decent option for speed and I really don't know much about Copper, but I hear he has some wheels too. I know it would seem like we are stocking up on old recievers, but I read somewhere that Brandon Stokley may not be kept by the Broncos this year. I would love to see a guy like Stokley burning down the sideline this year. Tell me if I'm completely nuts or not. Has he lost it? Would it be too many old guys? Or would it give us the deep threat that we desperately need? If not Stokley, could you see picking up anyone else for the role?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Lawrence and Bradley

I think Bradley is a playmaker… if he stays healthy, he’s the deep threat.

Lawrence has the speed… we’ll see if he can “get it” in time to contribute on offense.

ALSO

I think people underestimate Bowe’s ability to get down the field.
He’s not a typical posession guy, like Stokley or Engram.
He’s more of a Fitzgerald type (hopefully he gets to be that good!)

I don’t see what good Stokley would do the Chiefs.
I think Toomer is the last FA WR they will bring in.

Disagree

I think Pioli has set the precedent.
If We don’t have what we need, We will go find it.
Yesterday OLB/ST/Training Camp Fodder player, Today WR/Mentor/Training Camp Fodder player.
So we lose a Guard and a TE.
Maybe tommorrow we will pick up a FA Guard.

agreed

There are some vets I’m keeping my eye on to get cut during training camp I think I’ll write up a post.

I'm not saying Pioli is done with all FA

I’m saying he’s done at WR.

pending

What Steve’s trying to say is if there is an improvement that can be made Pioli will pull the trigger. Currently only two recievers (Bowe and Engram) if that have guaranteed jobs for 09

make that 3

no way Toomer doesn’t have a job.

He's still on the block

Haley has no past experience with Toomer and Toomer’s going to have to earn every next day. There’s a reason we only gave him a one year deal that wouldn’t cost us a dime to cut him before the season

I'm not buying that

there’s no way they brought in a guy of his caliber to cut.

he’s staying

I agree with you Nanz

I do think Toomer will earn his keep. He hasn’t had gaudy numbers the last couple of years, but his numbers were the kind of production numbers the Chiefs need. I see a guy like that having a serious impact for this team. Good pick-up for KC.

O Line

We don’t have the offensive line to allow a consistent deep ball to form. Toomer is just what we need. If the run game goes and we have even marginal production from TEs then we can worry a bit more about the long ball.

So true. When your O-line is suspect, lets forget about the deep ball. We simply move the chains, 1st downs after 1st downs. I like the old niners offense (ala west coast o), move the chains and grind up the clock with 13 play drives, make the defense work!

Predictions as of 06.24.2009.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

A real blue-collar workman like approach on both sides of the ball. I can digg it.

It's synergistic.

A lot of long balls to Jerry Rice were uncorked the instant the QB set his feet in the 3-step drop.

Yes, better protection is HUGE in creating long-ball threats, but the bottom line is WR speed. If you have somebody who can get behind other people FAST, your o-line just instantly got better.

by hmills110 on Aug 5, 2009 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously

Bowe reminds me a lot of a young T.O. type of receiver. Hands, speed, big, fluid runner, good routes, always improving. One thing Bowe has that’s a lot better than TO is his leaping ability.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)

What really seperates Bowe is his

freakish ability to mow over everyone after he catches the ball. That, to me, is his best attribute. He almost looks like some of the greater power running backs after he catches the ball. Maybe it’s because he’s mainly taking on DBs… but still.

by jonnyu on Aug 5, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love the comparison.

But unfortuantely they share one more thing, drops.

That being said, there is nothing I love more than Dwayne after the catch (DAC).

by Ben S on Aug 5, 2009 5:01 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They share that trait, but, frankly, Bowe's technique is better.

Other than concentration, there’s no earthly reason for Bowe’s drops. Owens has a STRONG tendency to muff an in-the-numbers-pass, because he lets it hit him in the chest. Bowe gets his hands on the ball, first. HIS issue is not securing the ball before planning his next move.

by hmills110 on Aug 5, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you Stag

Bradley will still be our “deep threat” and Bowe is not real speedy but, I can definitely see the comparison between him and Fitzgerald. Same type of speed, body type, and especially the way they can beat anybody for the jump ball.

So we have a stud #1 do it all kind of guy.
2 proven possession receivers.
1 fairly surehanded deep threat guy.

Sounds pretty good.

It is impressive when you lay it out like that

Now all we can do is hope each of these guys can stand and deliver. Chan has to be one happy man right now.

And ...

We’ve got the guy who helped turn Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston from a great receiving corps on a laughing stock team to a great receiving corps playing for a Super Bowl now coaching our team.

I’m not saying the guy is a WR-coaching genius, but he does have a history of working with some pretty damn good ones and getting them to reach the pinnacle of their potential. If we’ve got a brilliant receiving corps (and we might), Haley is the guy to get the best out of them.

True Dat.

But he’ s certainly good at it. I would take Stokley over Engram any day of the week.

by Ben S on Aug 5, 2009 5:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Toomer's a good pick-up.

His signing says the Chiefs aren’t currently very good at WR, which was my worry.

He doesn’t answer the deep ball threat question. He’ll be great for schoolin’ the youngsters, and he’s a player I’ve liked for YEARS. But his signing tells me that I was correct, and the Chiefs haven’t yet found the answer at WR.

It helps.

But you don’t want defenses to be able to cheat up, because they have no fear of your flanker speed.

Having said that, I DO think you can be a creditable offense, with GOOD (not great) WRs, if your play-fake has teeth in it. If teams have to stuff the box to stop your running, you can win a lot of games with Engram, Toomer and Bowe.

by hmills110 on Aug 5, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Q Lawrence runs a 4.2 and can flat out fly. The guy has insane quickness.

Bradley is indeed a deep threat, Taurus Johnson was also a guy that can make a big play…
Copper indeed…

But I dont think Stokley is that much faster or better than Toomer…Lawrence is the wild card, if he takes this hard coaching well….and responds, and learns…he can take it to the house…

this is a team that needs big plays. Charles/Lawrence are hopefully those guys

by SDChief on Aug 5, 2009 1:35 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Key for guys like Toomer, Engram and Taurus

will be whether or not the QB can extend plays. If he can (and Cassel and Thigpen can), these are 3 guys who will make some things happen.

But it begs the question of who’s gonna bring instant “Don’t let ’em beat us deep” concerns to the opposition. If Haley’s ridin’ Lawrence a lot, that could be a very GOOD sign.

KC wants a predominately passing attack...

…they need folks (Toomer, Engram) who can actually catch.

by FrankPitts on Aug 5, 2009 6:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We should probably be a predominate RUN attack

this year IMHO

The goal is balance.

And it’ll start with being convincing on the ground. But when looking at the NFC East teams we’re facing, not a snowball’s chance in hell if the QB-WR connection can’t be made against the blitz.
