Give LJ the ball.
This is my first fanpost, so cut me a little slack on it.
One thing that I've been shouting at the top of my lungs the last couple of years is that the Chiefs are simply a much better team when we give Larry Johnson a large workload. Most people were ready to write him off this offseason and let Jamaal Charles take over as our feature back. After all, only 6 wins in the last 2 years with LJ as our primary ball carrier hardly seems like a reason to pay a guy loads of money and put up with any temper tantrums that will spring up during the season. But even a slightly closer look over the last two seasons might change some people's minds.
In the last two seasons LJ has gotten 20 carries in a game only 8 times out of the 20 games he participated in. He had the freak injury in 2007 which sidelined him for half the season, and off the field issues kept him out 4 games last year. But out of those 8 games in which he got 20 carries, the Chiefs were 6-2. And the games in which he didn't get 20 carries we were a whopping 0-12. Sure, the numbers aren't the entire story. When you're playing from behind you generally don't stick with your running game as much as you'd like. But one mistake Herm Edwards continued to make was to abandon LJ early in a game.
The most telling thing to take out of this is that LJ made the team better by getting more carries during a time when our offense was continually changing. Two different OCs, and two different QBs in different configurations benefited form LJ getting the ball more.
The truth is that guys like Larry Johnson get better as the game goes on, and even as the season goes on. They get in to the rhythm of the game as it goes on. Larry Johnson isn't the only one who operates this way. The Chargers are having a similar problem keeping Ladainian Tomlinson with enough touches. When LJ and LT were at their prime and battling weekly for the rushing title, I used to see the boxscores of games at halftime and LT would be in single digits or even negative for total rushing yards. But that didn't stop him from ending the game with 130 yards rushing.
The only way that I see the Chiefs making a giant leap this year is to rely heavily on LJ. Back in 2006 we rested our entire team on his shoulders. He had 11 games with 20 or more carries, and we won 8 of them. Compared to the 1-6 that we went in games where he didn't get his carries. And that includes his 13 carry playoff loss against Indy.

Nice post.
The last time we won a game without LJ was when Priest was the starting RB.
When LJ is out, we lose.

great job
those numbers seem pretty clear… I hadn’t seen that stat before.
I hope he’s effective, and used properly, and that the offense is unpredictible….
if so, the Chiefs will have a winning record.

I somewhat agree..
Part of the season we were Run Run Pass Punt. And we were losing. Its hard to give him the ball when we’re going 3 and out and the other team goes and puts up points. Then we have to pass. I agree with we abandoned the run game early but thats because we were getting behind by alot early
After we switched to ArrowSpread, we were in games. Now this is what I thought was interesting. LJs YPC went up but his carries went down. AFTER the swtich to ArrowSpread, I think he should have had more carries. He had alot of good runs out of the Pistol. He should have gotten the ball more at that point.

I agree that game situations dictated his carries
but there were only really 3 games that LJ played in where we got blown out. Buffalo, Atlanta, and Carolina. Against Atlanta LJ got 20+ carries, with 17 being in the 2nd half when we were down 24-7. We looked a lot better in the 2nd half of that game, but Thigpen did give up 3 ints and the defense let Turner run loose so we were never going to win it.
I completely agree about the pistol offense. LJ proved that he can run out of it effectively, even though his YPC actually went down slightly(from 4.5 to 4.4). That just tells me that no matter what offense we run next year he should be a big part of it.

I agree about the pistol offense as well.
I think it really benefited his patient style of running to get carries out of a high-passing formation. The holes seemed a lot bigger, and they seemed to hold up for longer as well. I think that if we saw a few 25+ carry games out of LJ near the end of the season, we may have even won one of them.

only 3 blow outs?
I think that’s 3 too many……I’m just sayin.

Very good first post
I think we are going to see lots of LJ this year. I get the feeling this will be a power running, short passing offense, ball control oriented. If we can sustain drives and put up points, we stand a real good chance this year. LJ seems to be ready to be the man again. I have said repeatedly, lets run his legs off!
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Rec very nice post JT
We lost how many close games
7 seems to be hammered in my mind, maybe we could have 3-4 and been a 6-7 win team?
Well, Haley and Pioli say that is past and WE look to that which is doable. 2009 is doable with LJ.
Yeah I said Cut him in a post when he had to serve a suspension.
I said cut him earlier when the realist made me think this wasn’t going to have LJ fully in the Pack.
LJ can lead the Pack. He is lean and mean. What do you want your Chiefs to be on the Field?

Cause and effect aren't so easy to pinpoint.
You made reference to it, and others, too.
I’m more of the opinion that if the offense has balance, then LJ will get the ball and be successful when he does. Most will point to how LJ made the difference, even though, if he DOES have a great year, he’ll be at least as much the beneficiary of other things that happen around him as the difference-maker, himself.
So by all means, give him the ball, but don’t kid yourself that he’ll be the main reason things turn around, if they do. I’ll be more impressed if he rounds out his game and becomes a consistent receiver and a monster in pass-protection. And I think it’d be GREAT to see him in a 2-back offense where he splits some of the blocking duties, just to keep defenses guessing.

I'm not trying to become LJ's champion or anything...
but you’re seeming to underestimate LJ’s impact here. In 2006 he did everything imaginable to carry this team in to the playoffs. We know now that it wasn’t Damon Huard. In 2007 he had us off to a 4-2 start before he went down and we didn’t win another game. In 2008 we won 2 games. One was because he went off for 200 yards.
And his pass protection was already greatly improved last year, although most people didn’t seem to notice because our QBs were getting injured anyways.
by JayrodT on Aug 4, 2009 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree about LJ
I would, however, debate the point on Huard. Bear in mind that , although he was starting, he was losing out on 40% of practice snaps in Herm’s brilliant plan to move to Croyle. When he was getting all the practice snaps, he was substantially better.

Nice post
Well put together. I have to agree on one thing. I once heard LJ described as a diesel engine. Very productive, but only after you allow it to warm up and stay warmed up. I am no trucker. Just what I recall.

+1000
Finally – someone actually paid attention to how KC acquired those losses in the past 2 years. And stopped picking on LJ’s off the field dumb misfortunes.
Predictions as of 06.24.2009.
Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

Great post and Recd'
I have been on the LJ side of the argument for a long time but, I didn’t have the numbers to back it up. Those are some pretty interesting stats.
I am hoping for heavy doses of two back sets with LJ running and Charles catching passes. Like Z-man says Dink and dunk with an occasional shot downfield.
This should be a fun offense to watch. With the Toomer signing, I am expecting a top ten offense. It seems like all the pieces are in place as long as the O-line holds up and it sounds like they are having a good camp.

Good stats...
I always thought he was a big part to the offense, but those stats make it even clearer. I too was disgusted by his personal problems, but we’re all human and make mistakes. Hopefully; someone has gotten into his head, and shown the error of his ways. Everything I’ve heard shows that his attitude has greatly improved, and I’m sure we’ll see it on the field.
The O-line is still a concern of mine, but they seem to be having nothing but good things to say so far.
Bring on the birds, I can’t wait for the season to start.

Play-calling is still a big part of the picture. Run when the other team thinks........
….you’re going to pass, and pass when the other team thinks your going to run. Under Herm the play-calling was terrible and predictable. Once we went to the spread, the offense was opened up and did much better.

ahh LJ
Shut up & play…..quit beating up chicks. That’s all I’m saying.
I want to see him get back to the days when he was a beast and giving PH some good ‘ol competition….that was the LJ I loved. Since then, my relationship with him has become love/hate…..I’d like to get back to loving the masogonistic jerk personally….at least on the field :)

For LJ to get 20 carries per game....
the defense needs to push the opposing defense off the field more than once a half. I know that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I seem to remember lots of games last year with long, grinding drives against our defense. KC may have only been down a few points but the offense often only had two or three possessions per half. One or two of those was usually three and out. Nobody gets 20 carries per game that way. So, say what you want (I agree your comments are legitimate) about LJ’s importance to offensive success, but football is a team sport. LJ not only needs to perform, the defense needs to give him chances. Otherwise, KC still loses.

I'll take the unpopular view.
I saw LJ as a liability as much as an asset. Maybe his all-around game was better than he’s credited with, but the offense seemed pretty 1-dimensional with him in there. If the run-blocking returns to the Willie Roaf-Will Shields form, LJ will be a beast. If not, he doesn’t have enough lightning in the bottle to go with the thunder.
I respect your stats, but I’m one to always question drawing cause-and-effect conclusions. Ironically, though, if the o-line gets it together and LJ has a big season as a result, your predictions will be true, and that’s fine with me.

the real Question is...
not wether LJ has any gas left, or the ability to be effective, but what does he do when things aren’t going so well? Will he pick the team up and make some blocks, or go back to the huttle sulking. The right 53.

I agree
you can question LJ’s character he’s a douche but you can’t question his talent, him and Charles would make a great pair. The compliment eachother well, LJ is a great power runner that breaks tackles but sucks at screens getting on the edge and receiving and thats where Charles shines
