Chiefs Training Camp Update: 8/4
Updated: 7:03 PM
We've got Bob Gretz's CBS updates and some Twitter stuff to go on for camp's sixth practice session. Of course, we'll be updating this post will all the info we can find about today's single practice by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Here are a few quick hits:
- Glenn Dorsey was in full pads, making his training camp debut. Welcome Glenn!
- DE Wallace Gilberry had a field goal block
- New Chiefs WR Amani Toomer is already making plays
More for you, after the jump. Keep an eye out this post and we'll let you know when it's been updated.
General Stuff
- A bit of a raucous crowd today as spontaneous clapping/cheering has erupted. Bobby Engram has now yelled, "Give me some energy," and the crowd has responded. (The Mothership)
- The practice was very spirited and especially hard hitting in the run game segments. (BobGretz.com)
Offense
- Chiefs coach Todd Haley spent extra time with the receivers again and admonished WR Dwayne Bowe for how he ran a pass route. (CBS Sports)
- New Chiefs WR Amani Toomer made a nice leaping catch along the sidelines on a hot, high throw from QB Ingle Martin. (CBS Sports)
- Today’s point of emphasis in situational work was clock management while nearing field goal range with no timeouts. (The Mothership)
- BIG play- cassel splits safties on skinny post 2 rodney wright. 50 yards to the house (Josh Looney)
- Quarterbacks rolling to the right hitting a target: Matt Cassel (1/5), Tyler Thigpen (1/3), Brodie Croyle (1/4) and Ingle Martin (1/4) (UWRF)
- Quarterbacks rolling to the left hitting a target: Cassel (2/3), Thigpen (1/2), Croyle (2/3) and Martin (1/2) (UWRF)
- Bowe caught a pass and was quickly tackled by Carr. Haley yelled at him that he wants more finish. (UWRF)
- Devard Darling caught a pass across the middle and was cheered by the coaches. (UWRF)
- On second-and-five, Martin connected with fullback Jed Collins. Linebacker Corey Mays was not impressed, hollering, “Why the (freak) was he so wide open?” Haley didn’t appreciate Mays’ question, and said, “Quit (yelling) at each other and figure it out.” (UWRF)
- After a Redd interception, Toomer didn't chase him down and Haley yelled at him. (UWRF)
- Thigpen and Martin threw at targets in the corner of the end zone from 30 yards away. Thigpen hit the target, but missed the bucket. Martin only hit it after it bounced in front of it. (UWRF)
- In one of the running drills, ILB Monty Beisel came up to stop RB Jackie Battle and connected on a good hit. But it was Beisel who was staggered as Battle ran right through him. (BobGretz.com)
Defense
- Although the Chiefs have not announced a roster move, OLB Vince Redd is on the field wearing No. 98. He was claimed on waivers after being released by New England. (CBS Sports)
- Back for the Chiefs afternoon session are two defensive starters: DE Glenn Dorsey and ILB Derrick Johnson. (CBS Sports)
- Chiefs ILB Zach Thomas isn't taking part in the teamwork portion of practice. Corey Smith is working with the first-team defense. (CBS Sports)
- Defensive end Alfonso Boone said to Defensive Line Coach Tim Krumrie after completing one round of the drill, “Scared of Ron (Edwards), huh?” Krumrie had apparently moved out of the way of 315-pound defensive tackle Ron Edwards. Krumrie kind of laughed and said, “Well, the big mother (freaker) hit me.” (UWRF)
- Donald Washington was getting frustrated with himself in one drill but Clancy Pendergast told him, "That ain't bad, though." (UWRF)
- Glenn Dorsey spent time after practice with Tim Krumrie getting off the line of scrimmage and hand placement (UWRF)
- Vince Redd picked off a Croyle pass (UWRF)
- The play of the practice came when Larry Johnson ran left and Derrick Johnson shot through a gap and tackled him for what would have been a three or four-yard loss. Big move, big play by DJ. (BobGretz.com)
Special Teams
- Chiefs K Ryan Succop hit 3 of 4 FG attempts. His kick from 40 yards was blocked, but he hit from 31, 33 and 37 yards. (CBS Sports)
- An update from the special teams world - K Ryan Succop knocks down his first three attempts in field goal period, but DE Wallace Gilberry ends the bid for a perfect four-of-four by getting a paw on the final attempt. (The Mothership)
Injuries
- Not practicing with the Chiefs on Tuesday were: RB Kolby Smith, TEs Brad Cottam and Tony Curtis, LBs Demorrio Williams and Wes Dacus, Gs
Edwin Harrison(Reportedly released) and Wade Smith and S DaJuan Morgan. (CBS Sports) - LB Corey Smith left practice and headed to the exercise bikes with about 20 minutes left (UWRF)
- ILB Zack Thomas started practice, but eventually ended up on the bike patrol with the rehab team. It appears he may have an injury to his upper left leg. (BobGretz.com)

Love the updates
It’s nice to see Cassel and Toomer making plays, as well as Succop hitting his kicks. I’m glad Dorsey is back because he has a lot of ground to make up at a new spot.
So with Cottam hurt and Ryan making plays, is there a chance we have a legit position battle at TE despite all the talk of Cottam coming into camp?
Chiefs 2009: 6-10 or 7-9 and only one season from the Playoffs.
cassel splits safties on skinny post 2 rodney wright. 50 yards to the house
Rodney Wright getting highlight footage this week. hmm…
I'm loving
How scuffed up our LB’s helmets are already! Making good contact already baby. They like getting physical and that is what we need from them.
A more updates from Gretz
From CBS:
Chiefs Pro Bowl LG Brian Waters suffered a right leg injury during a live goal-line session and left the drill.
Chiefs coach Todd Haley says WR Amani Toomer “still has gas in his tank” after 13 seasons in the league
The Chiefs finally announced the signing of WR Amani Toomer, who played 13 seasons for the New York Giants. To make room for Toomer, the Chiefs released injured TE Tony Curtis.
WR Amani Toomer said he’s happy to be with the Chiefs. “It’s a young team, with a new coach, a great quarterback, and it’s a good situaiton for me,” he said. “You can feel the excitement here and how the coaches are trying to change the environment.”

Babb wasn't impressed with Dorsey
From his tweet:
kb_kcstarIt’s about time Glenn Dorsey practiced. That’s the good news. Here’s the bad: He looked winded more often than not.Wow…didn’t need to hear that. We need this guy to step up and be the man this year. It’s still early…let’s see what happens with him from here on. Magee has been sounding like he is doing pretty well…Dorsey better watcxh out.

Dorsey is gonna be great this year
Don’t you worry.
(psst! Dorsey! You reading this? You’re ass better stay healthy this year. I went to bat for you and finally got you playing DE just like we hoped. Don’t let me down. I’m getting a little concerned? Don’t you embarrass me in front of all these people. Dammit! Thank you.)

I wonder if he'll be able to get up for the game
From CBS:
Newly signed Chiefs WR Amani Toomer will face his former team, the New York Giants, in Week 4. “They felt like they needed to move on, and I agreed I needed to move on.”I’m thinking this guy will be wanting to show how well the “moving on” went!
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
He didn't seem to get much attention in the offense, but still has a way of making key catches.
On a trip to the U.N. in New York City, the Dalai Lama sneaked out of his hotel to break his vows and eat an American hot dog. Checking up and down the street for witnesses, he whispered to the vendor "Make me one with everything."
And for more breaking news
From http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/KC:
The Chiefs announded they have claimed LB Vince Redd on waivers from New England. To make room for Redd, they released injured guard Edwin Harrison.I guess that is the official annoucement that has now been made. Of course, if you are an AP hound you have known this for about 24 hrs. Thanks for the heads up there Bob!

And a comment from Babb about Toomer
kb_kcstarHere’s what I know about Amani Toomer: He’s 34, won a Super Bowl, and can make some insane catches. I saw one at practice today.

•After a Redd interception, Toomer didn't chase him down and Haley yelled at him.
How about that an OLB who can presumably pass cover…
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
nice to see
the new guys producing from day one.
I think Toomer was a GREAT signing
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
love the Toomer signing
Good to see another capable vet come in and make some plays for us. Don’t know anything about Redd but picking off a pass your first day in practice has me already liking that pickup.

someone help...
For some reason, in the midst of this amazing blitz of training camp general news and minutiae i swore i have read a lot about Alex Magee starting most of the time with first stringers and making lots of big plays.
one-on-one drills he smoked someone 2 days in a road with same move as well as a sack or two?
am i crazy or has all this disappeared? i have gone through gretz, uwrf, and our AP stuff…
i for one am very excited about this kid becoming a rock for us (go 3rd rounders!) even if the reasons i have completely hallucinated!
nfl is looking for that yao ming money
No illusion
He has been doing real well, probably much better than expected. I didn’t hear a thing about him today though, other than that he and Dorsey were sharing 1st team reps.

so i am not ‘completely’ crazy…
i swear i remember reading 4 or 5 instances where i was like “damn, boy can play”
