John Clayton of ESPN.com is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed former New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer.

Per Clayton, citing a source, the contract's duration is one year.

Updates to follow...

***

This gives the Chiefs ten wide receivers on the roster: Dwayne Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram, Terrance Copper, Devard Darling, Taurus Johnson, Quinten Lawrence, Jeff Webb and Rodney Wright.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star confirms and says Toomer will be at today's afternoon practice, which starts in about an hour.

jackpot

love it.

will the “experts” stop saying that “Cassel doesn’t have the weapons around him that he did in New England” ???

Sure, he’s no Randy Moss… but Bowe, Engram, Toomer, Bradley and whoever else makes the team is a pretty solid group!!!

so...

who do you think gets cut first out of our group of WRs?

by Pontiaclvr on Aug 4, 2009 12:58 PM CDT reply actions

Why can't he ever do it in a game?

He always practices well. Thats why he has stayed on the roster the last couple years but, it never seems to translate.

+10000 we got rid of Parker now Webb.....

and for that matter…any other receiver that has a name in some way related to spiderman. On the flipside, pick up anyone named cancer, boil, bunyon, or melinoma.

I wish Parker would have developed better! I think you make a valid point with the spiderman approach to trimming our roster.

I was debating this last night...

My vote: Cut Webb, Darling and Wright

Keep: Bowe, Bradley, Toomer, Engram

Special teams/ bubble guys: Lawrence, Copper

Practice Squad: Taurus Johnson

"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"

by stagdsp on Aug 4, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd keep Darling around myself.

He has some talent and I think he makes a good project.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Aug 4, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

true

and he has looked good running with the first team this offseason…

But, someone has to go, and I figure it’s him or Bradley.

I say keep Bradley

I'm Pulling for

Terrance Cooper. I really am. I unfortunetly cut him off of my 53 man roster. Even though we are no where near that. For meantime though I have either Wright or Webb going Bye Bye. Taurus Johnson is close as well.

hell ya got that KUSH nigga

but check the #s vrabel already be slippin. Nobody answers me when I ask why signing 4 guys whose ages total 141 years to a 2-14 team in a division that the chargers will EASILY win is a good idea. Why we blockin the future? I don’t get it, much like I aint got a clue why we give Pioli the benefit of the doubt when he pisses off veterans, hires a douche of a coach, sits on his money when he’s got a shitload of it, only to sign has-beens, and when, according to everyone everwhere, ya Pioli was important in NE, but BELICHICK HAD THE FINAL SAY EVERY TIME. Also, he gives Cassel a huge contract super prematurely, and under his watch so far, the chiefs have won EXACTLY ZERO GAMES.

Someone step up and show me the reasons why we think he’s god and all his moves be unfallible.

Great, now Kansas City has TWO delusional GM's who think that contending in 2010 is still a possibility. Note to an NFL GM: if you win 2 games one year, dont expect signing four players whose ages sum to 141 and expect to make the playoffs the next year. Super reach for Tyson Jackson, huge contract to a QB who's still very much a question mark, questionable FA signing, why have we already given Pioli the benefit of the doubt? On the other hand, I have nothin to say about Dayton Moore, he's dead to me.

If he is over weight and out of shape all the reps in the world aren’t going to help him.

Haley is trying to make ALL the players accountable, no matter who they are or where they were drafted. Just because he was a #1 pick doesnt mean he gets to come to camp out of shape.

If he is being made an example of I think that is a good thing. Get with the program or get out of town.

Keep flying under the radar!

No one expects anything from the Chiefs this year, maybe except for our divisions rivals. We have a real chance to surprise and put teams on the ropes. If the defense can stop the run and get some pressures we will be vastly improved with these offensive additions! I predict 9-7 with a solid chance to win the division. Look out AFC West!

Im probably going to get a lot of flack for this but....

I like the new receiver corp better without Tony G. Before you get out the pitch forks…let me explain. Tony G is awesome, but he as always been kinda a crutch for the chiefs. Whenever every other receiver sucked, Tony always stepped in to take up the slack. I think its better now that the receivers don’t have their training wheels. If the receivers screw up its “all on them”. Also, the QB is going to be forced to perform. No emergency dump pass to Tony G. So, life after Tony G isn’t looking so bad.

good point regarding the safety blanket

When you say you “like the new receiver corp better,” I guess it means that we’ll be forced to look their way more often. WR stats should definitely improve. Are you saying the added focus and concentration will actually results in better play out of them? If I drink what you’re pouring, I s’pose that it could help WR motivation during camp, as well as the season.

I’m hard pressed to say we’re a better team without Tony G. But it’s 2009.

Huh?

According to recent data, Toomer is better than everyone on our team except for Bowe…

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 4, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you actually watch the last part of last season where the Jints lost Plaxico and needed a WR to step up? Toomer absolutely disappeared, and was ultimately benched, and then let go by the Giants, who badly need a WR. Sure he’s had a great career. So did Marvin Harrison. But they are done. They are just names. And I hate seeing the Chiefs get back into the Carl type addiction to older veterans. At least it’s just a 1 year contract, unlike Carl, and he can be an easy cut. But I do hope he is cut, or Engram. I don’t want both on this squad.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't care if the Giants cut him

Toomer is an upgrade over Jeff Webb or Devard Darling, hence, the team is better for having signed him.

Hey, I do also, but I’m pointing out why the Giants, a Great organization with a very astute GM in Jerry Reese let him go. Pioli will make some mistakes, and IMO this is one. We’ll see how it works out.
Point is, fans get waaaaaaay to attracted to names, when the guy can’t play anymore.

Way to make this an interesting thread, dablue!

Kudos for at least that. :)

If Toomer is a has-been, there’s the month of August to figure it out. If he’s cut on the way to 53, I won’t be mad. But I am pumped now. If we end the season with both Engram and Toomer, yeah it makes us weaker for the future. Good point. But I am very happy we’re not sitting on the current crew of WRs. And I don’t want Matt Jones.

The Giants didn't have a #1 like D-Bowe to keep the pressure off.

Toomer and Engram will both be successful BECAUSE of a #1 receiver in D-bowe who teams have to respect. While Bowe is pulling double coverage, one of these guys will find a way to get open.

I would agree with you if we were counting on Toomer as our #1.

We aren't asking him to be a #1

Of COURSE he disappeared when teams could put their #1 Corner on him because Plax was gone. That won’t happen in KC because they better be covering Bowe. If Toomer has 5 catches a game and ends up around 500 yards and 3-5 scores, it is an upgrade EASILY.

by ChiefsD.T.#58 on Aug 4, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe Cuz

Toomer is and always has been a #2. He needs a dominant receiver opposite of him to get into the spaces he finds. Dwayne Bowe provides this. Engram, working out of the slot, has been Seattles leading receiver for a long time but has faltered to injuries lately. While the patch jobs were done with old vet the core of this team is still very much young

Not jumping the gun

but it is clear that Toomer is an upgrade over all of our WR’s save Bowe and maybe Engram.

A starting lineup of Bowe and Toomer, with Engram as the slot WR looks a lot better than Bowe and Bradley, with Darling as the slot WR.

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 4, 2009 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

totally agree

Dont get me wrong, Toomer was who I’ve wanted as an add-on for a while now. Now we actually have a solid WR crew which we didn’t a month ago and I kept saying that but everyone said “no no its fine, we have good guys like Darling and Bradley”

So I’m happy with this, just not jumping the gun. But overall very happy with ALL of the off-season moves.

there is a big difference a matter a fact a huuuge fucking difference between what pioli is doing and what king carl was doing . carl signed names to come in and be starters to sell tickets.

pioli is builiding a solid foundation with a huge plan to take over the world and the nfl by storm. HE puts guys in good situations .

like i mentioned before he is building a machine . A mixture of youth and vets that runs on decipline team work and focus its all a structure of dystruction and we are just building a machine that wil be able to plug in new and old players all serving for one purpose. Like dablue said, we are not signing these guys to multi-year contracts or billing them as saviors. It is clear what we are doing, brining in veteran leadership to key positions to teach the young guys and give us a near term upgrade.

by Scaryclouds on Aug 4, 2009 2:54 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Agreed

the problem with the Ty Law contract was that it was for more than one or two years. He wasn’t terrible the first few years. And the strength of the Toomer contract is that it is for one year. This is a much better/safer signing.

Nope, I’d be a lousy GM. But that’s irrelevant to this conversation. I LOVE Pioli as a GM, he’s exactly who I wanted, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to agree with every move, and this ios one I don’t, and I think I have very valid reasons why I don’t.

Toomer is not a #1 WR, but we don’t need him to be…I will tell you that if he catches 40 balls for 450 yards he’ll help us a lot more than Webb (who has 36 catches in his entire career) or Darling (who has 35 catches the last two years combined)

Again, I live in NY, and I watched the Giants play last year, and when Plax went down, and they desperately needed a WR to step up, not only didn’t Amani not step up, he became invisible. He was a far worse player at the end of the season then the beginning, he couldn’t get off the line, and those are all marks of a player in steep decline.

No sh*t!

I wrote on here a few days ago about how Dorsey will never make it because of the injuries and everyone flamed me. He was my favorite player coming out of college and I FREAKED when we drafted him but I’ve worried about those legs for a while now and they’ve done nothing but slow him down. Sure, he’s never missed any serious time due to injury, however, he can hardly make it through a single game without having to sit out a few series and he’s ALWAYS injured during practice. That just doesn’t cut it, folks. especially when you are getting paid the money he is.
Oh and, way to go on the Toomer signing, Chiefs! Now that our starting line-up is going to look a lot like Bowe, Toomer and Engram, it should hopefully light a fire under the asses of the younger guys. Nice!

This is definitely a good thing. He’s old but still a solid receiver and has veteran leadership ability. Great signing!

A fan since '90. I cried when Lowery missed the FG :( I was 11.

True!

We cant expect him to come in and catch 75 balls and get 1000yrds…he wil complement what we have and be an upgrade over the others.

Great!

He is indeed old but an upgrade over all except Bowe/Bradley/Engram…and he is a coach to the young WR’s, can teach up a Johnson or Lawrence

PHEW!

1 year deal. NOt so bad. Renting a veteran WR I supposed can help with the young guys.

Predictions as of 06.24.2009.

Larry Johnson will be a top 3 fantasy pick once again in 2010 (after a monster season in 2009.)
Dwayne Bowe will be a 2009 Pro Bowl selection.
Brandon Flowers will have at least 6 INTs in 2009 season.
Todd Haley will have a sideline shouting match caught on TV yelling at one of his asst. coaches.

Mostly a positive move from what I've been reading around the net..

Leaves us with Bowe, Bradley, Darling, Engram, Toomer, Lawerence and then Johnson to the practice squad?

The thing that i like about this signing is that players are finally wanting to come to kc. Pioli has players around the league believing we are going to do what it takes to win. KC is tired of first round playoff losses. Players are choosing kc.

You do realize that Toomer had no other offers. It’s not like he was out there waiting for the perfect situation.

I was talking about all of our free agent pickups in general. Notice how i didn’t just same toomer. For example Zach Thomas had other offers but he chose kc. And i don’t want to hear it after your ridiculous post that he is not an upgrade to what we already have.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

The name itself is psychological!

Toomer has great hands and just needs to make a few catches per game. The psychological impact on Cornerbacks having Bowe, Engram, Toomer and whoever else get on the field combined with Charles and LJ and Cassel at the helm! We will continually create match up problems and you have to respect our passing game and won’t be able to always stack the box. I forsee a solid offense with great balance!

GREAT SIGNING, HE WILL TEACH THE YOUNGER GUYS AS WELL!

by casselreadychiefs on Aug 4, 2009 1:57 PM CDT reply actions

I agree it isnt necesarily his stat line that will be most affected...

But old or not when he’s on the field he has to be respected and that will take players away from guys like Bowe.

What are you Toomer’s agent? I am willing to go out on a limb to say you don’t know jack about how many offers Toomer has on the table. a lot of these vet guys don’t do anything until camp so they don’t have to go through OTA’s.

If you don’t like the pick up fine but don’t spout off crap you don’t know anything about.

Toomer had 2 catches in a playoff game last year which is two more than all of our recievers combined.

to say this isn’t a good pick up for the Chiefs is absurd! Last year Jeff Webb had FIVE catches for 46 yards. He was on the roster all year. Toomer had more recieving yards than Bradley had last year.

Replacing Jeff Webb with Toomer, even if Toome declines furthur, STILL makes this a good pickup. If Toomer can manage to scrape more than 46 yards receiving together this year he will be an upgrade.

Exactly my point…it’s like we’re all ignoring the fact that apart from Bowe and Bradley we didn’t have any WR’s worth being in the NFL…so we signed two (Engram and Toomer)

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 4, 2009 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Toomer could out perform Webb in ONE catch!

After Bowe, Bradley and TG…and I am not counting RB’s….

Devard Darling 17 for 247 yards 1 Touch

Will Franklin 7 for 83 yards 0 Touch

Cottam 7 for 63 yards 0 touch

Toomer > Darling + Franklin + Webb

Or how about this? Webb is so useless that Tyler THigpen only had NINE less receiving yards than him and he is a FRIKIN QB!

more like wat a cheap way to make a point

brodie gets hurt for he throws it, and Thiggy only threw to 2 people. is there any 2 man combo that was thrown to more than dbowe and tonyg? I be doubtin it. Plus, its a new offense, a new qb, a new coach, a new….everything. so you be comparin apples and oranges. but then again, i guess dat be da basis of a blog argument. and da argument always seems in da chiefs favor (or at least Pioli’s). He’s already won the town over, and he aint done shit yet. U aint see any problem with a 2-14 team signing Zach Thomas, Mike Vrabel, Toomer, Engram? We really think we gonna make the playoffs nex year? hell nah man. We’ll get better, we probably gonna make it in 2010, but not this year.

by RoyalFlush on Aug 4, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I haven’t mentioned Webb once in my comments. He’s worthless. But I’d rather see what Darling and Bradely have to offer than Toomer, and I’d also like to give Lawrence a shot to make the team as WR/Kick returner. Amani will take 1 of those spots.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree. Bradley and Darling will probably both be here.

regardless of the Toomer signing. They will probably get some playing time too. I think whoever performs best at cam and MAKES THE CATCHES will be the #2 guy.

It will be between Bradley and Toomer for #2 and I feel like Engram will have the slot receiver job locked up.

Darling will probably be more of a backup.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Aug 4, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

if toomer had so many options

why he be signing with a 2-14 team at da end of his career?

by RoyalFlush on Aug 4, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

At this point

He is nothing other than additional competition in training camp. If he can run routes, and most importantly catch the ball, he MAY make the team. For now, he is in the same boat as nine other guys. We will begin to find out if he is all we hope he is. And let’s be clear…the competition is not only among the 10 we have in camp, but in all the other camps too. When cuts come, there will be some surprises and we are in great shape to jump on good guys.

I love the signing….but we shall see who WANTS to WIN the job.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

I love the veteran pickups but we are going to be in a mess if we have to replace them all after this year. I guess at that point we can just find some more patch work and keep drafting smart.

Its not ideal

But what else can you do at this point. You cannot fix this team in one year, but you have to compete now! We have at least an extra 2nd next year to address some of these holes the Vets will leave, but if we can get a year of OK production plus have them help change the culture…….I don’t see a better solution.

These are Amani’s last 4 game logs, when the Jints had lost Plax, and DESPERATELY neeeded a WR to step up. I watched those games, and Amani was a non factor, when the Jints needed him to be THE factor. In earlier years, he would have been. He was a GREAT player, very underrated throughout his career, IMO. But the key word is WAS.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 2:38 PM CDT reply actions

He was their only receiver then, right?

Plax was gone so the D could have their way with Toomer. Bowes presence won’t allow that.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Aug 4, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

How many times is this argument going to be repeated?

I’ll repeat my answer: It was not PAYTON Manning throwing the ball. Eli relied on Plax like Romo relied on TO. Toomer is a nice situational player pickup.

In prior years, Toomer thrived when he had to assume the #1 position. Last year, he couldn’t do anything. He looked like a done player. I’m a big fan of toomer. I think he is one of the most unmderated WR’s of the last decade. I’ve watched him closely, living in NY. He lost a ton last year, and I hope the Toomer i saw at the end of last year doesn’t make the Chiefs on name value alone, and takes away a job from Darling or Bradely. That’s my point

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

If he takes a job away from Darling or Bradley then he's a better player.

ok dude we’ve heard your argument. if you don’t think he is still better than jeff webb, rodney wright, or devard darling then i just don’t know what to tell ya man. I think its a good upgrade for leadership and atleast a good backup. I am pulling for bradley but the more the merry. What an offseason though. New gm, coach, vrabel, thomas, mike brown, engram, toomer, and hopefully a solid draft. Things have changed. I don’t think we lack talent last years just leadership. i think that shoud be solved and we could do some big things. This will be a telling year of what are real weaknesses are and not just poor coaching. The moves have been made and are not over but pioli, haley, and hunt have done everything in their power to put this team in a position to win now. Now its time to get some f’n fans in the stands. let arrowhead rock!!

by dwill_pittst on Aug 4, 2009 2:43 PM CDT reply actions

Who said he’s not an upgrade over Webb or Wright? But I don’t think he is at this stage over darling.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

ok but what would make you think that?….certainly not production because darling has never had a year like toomer

by dwill_pittst on Aug 4, 2009 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m not arguing Toomer’s career vs Darling. That’s not a rational argument. Toomer has had a great career, emphasis on HAD. I’m arguing what Darling can do for us in 2009 AND beyond vs Toomer, and I’ll take Darling in that situation.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

i’m not arguing their career either. Im saying that darling has never done in a year of his career what toomer has done in a year in his career even including last year. Im not getting on your case i just don’t get your logic

by dwill_pittst on Aug 4, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Darling is a big special teams guy, and was playing better at the end of last season. And he’s been playing well in the OTA’s, often playing at the #2 WR position ahead of Bradely. I see an upside with Darling, for this year and beyond. Toomer has little left, and there’s nothing after this yea, if there’s even anything for this year. You always should have an eye towards the future when evaluating a roster.

by dablueguy on Aug 4, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah i can understand that darling is younger but i don’t think he gives a better chance to win this year that darling. Maybe beyond but that will be decided another day. obviously haley felt that darling and bradley couldn’t hack it as our number 2 receivers. we had a lot of drops early in this camp to make him worried enought to bring someone in

One good thing about Engram/Toomer

DBowe (love him) is not the only sheriff in town and will have to concentrate in practice, imo. He’s still the best we’ve got. Just saying that there’s got to be a certain amount of respect for what the other two have done, and he can’t be lolligaggin around like he’s the only game in town.

Competion, Wisdom, and Reliability

Hey this an awesome thread! I really like this pickup because more or less, it’s insurance.

He’s another set of eyes, ears, and hands that can really contribute in ways that we probably don’t even know about (coaching the younger guys up). The entire offseason, Pioli and Haley preached about guys that fit their system, that being, tough dedicated, reliable football players that want to and know how to win as a team. Anyone who thinks Toomer doesn’t fit into this category is crazy! Pioli and Haley know what they are doing on this one. They obviously have a specific purpose for signing Toomer. My guess is, that he will just push every one of those 10 WR’s and make all of them work harder and play better in camp. If he makes it out of camp (pretty sure he will on this one) he will be one of those reliable “role” players, which is fine, and as most people have said, that’s an upgrade from what we will get from most of the younger guys.

btw I’m going to venture to say Chuck Norris> Scott Pioli…Come on it’s Chuck Norris!
