Agent: Chiefs LB Zach Thomas Not Retiring

Rosenhaus_zach_thomas_medium
Zach Thomas (right) and agent Drew Rosenhaus together (via Wikipedia)

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported within the last hour that Kansas City Chiefs LB Zach Thomas will retire "barring the unforeseen".  Well, that unforeseen appears to be rearing it's head.  Thomas' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, says his client is not calling it quits.

Zach Thomas is not retiring. He is progressing from his injury & he fully expects to have a great season with the Chiefs in 09.

Um...?  Adam Schefter, as we said earlier today, is one of the most trusted voices in the business so I'm not quite sure what to make of this report.

As Josh Looney pointed out just a little bit ago, Zach Thomas hadn't been seen on the practice field for about a week.  Today, however, he was out in 'No Man's Land' conditioning.

Rosenhaus may be pulling for an injury settlement for the Chiefs since Thomas is believed to be injured.  Thomas' contract won't be guaranteed until day one of the regular season, which means Rosenhaus doesn't get paid until then.

Stay tuned.

Posturing.

He doesn’t want to say Zach Thomas is retiring, because then he doesn’t get any compensation. And Rosenhaus wants all of the money he can get his hands on.

Instead, if Zach doesn’t “retire” and just rides out the wave in KC, the Chiefs have to cut him or reach an injury settlement or something. In that case, at least some money goes to Zach Thomas and, via the agent’s cut, Drew Rosenhaus.

Trust Adam Schefter. Always.

think about this:

IF he is hurt, he doesn’t go against our 53, AND he gets to take advantage of our Doctors. We also get to pick his brain when he’s in the building. sounds like win-win to me.

No money for Zack means no money for Drew. I think Zach retires. Drew is definitely fishing for a injury pay out.

I dont know why everyone says Schefter is so credible...

Schefter is on quite roll reporting things that end up being false. ie Marvin Harrison to the Titans, the schism in Viking land, and now this all with a couple weeks.

Harrison was contacted by the Titans

When they found out how much he was asking they didn’t respond. And I’d believe the schism thing as well.

by SoCalChief17 on Aug 31, 2009 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I would believe the schism...

But not any more than you would have in any other locker room in the preseason….

It was manufactured news in that regard…

by woodman212 on Aug 31, 2009 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

It wasn’t that it was false, but it could be said about any team.

Just because Brett Favre is involved, everyone acted like it was a story.

by rockchalk on Aug 31, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I loved JA's quote on that

he thought schism was an STD

Jeff Fisher goes out of his way to call bullshit of Schefter.

“We’ve had no contact whatsoever with Marvin or his agent and to be quite honest with you I don’t know where Adam Schefter got that information,” Fisher said Wednesday.

As to the possibility that the Titans might call Harrison in the future, Fisher said, “You’ll have to just stay put and see what Adam says because he’s got a better take on what we’re doing than we do.”

correction

schefter has been with NFL network the past 5+ years. during his tenure there, yes he has been VERY dependable and known as one of the best in the NFL for reporting breaking news, (along with jay glazer and chris mortensen) glazer on the same level as schefter…id probably take him first overall in a NFL reporter fantasy draft- but lately…mort has been proven wrong…and schefter was wrong about the marvin thing, the titans DID contact him. but this schism thing shouldnt be a big deal but if u want to look at it like he was wrong then i guess go ahead.

by CHIEFER on Aug 31, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions

schefter WASNT** wrong about the marvin thing

and the schism thing wasnt taken out of context – anything regarding brett favre is now-a-days

by CHIEFER on Aug 31, 2009 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Glazer is the best.

But Schefter is right there, too.

Mortensen isn’t in the same ballpark.

by rockchalk on Aug 31, 2009 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions

i know

at one point he was, i used to be so excited to hear his stuff on sunday mornings- but that shanahan report really hurt his rep.

by CHIEFER on Aug 31, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here, man.

My favorite part of NFL Sunday Countdown was listening to Mort’s report. Now, that was partly because of the idiocy of everyone else, but still — he knew his shit.

But he went way out there with the Shannahan rumor, and stood behind it, and then just entirely missed. Like, it wasn’t even a near-miss or anything. It was just brutal. I hope the guy who gave him that info bought him like a car, or something, to say sorry.

by rockchalk on Aug 31, 2009 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I've never liked ESPN- always hated it

Only reason I tolerate it now is because of Schefter. If I wanted my football news, I’d wait to hear what he had to say first. Him leaving the NFLN hurt them badly.

by SoCalChief17 on Aug 31, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea Schefter was a great on-camera personality as well

this new guy Jason La Confora is supposively a “poor man’s Schefter” but no one could fill shoes of the Schefter and his blackberry.

by CHIEFER on Aug 31, 2009 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

NFLN is still fantastic.

And better than ESPN in every other way.

But yeah, I’m not exactly buying Jason La Canforia. Or whatever. From what I’ve seen, he’s not bad, but it takes awhile to really build up a reputation. I hope he is a stud, though, and can build one up — because NFLN is better in every way.

I love Deion Sanders.

Yeah, Rich Eisen is an absolute genius.

He left ESPN like what, 6 or 7 years ago a full year and a half before NFLN even went on air.

Talk about going out on a limb. If that backfires, he is pretty much screwed.

But now, he’s probably more known than most of the SportsCenter anchors, becuase he is THE guy at NFLN.

And he is damn good at his job, too. Oh, I love Rich Eisen. Soo much.

even his stuff

on espn tho, in the early years when he would co-anchor with dan patrick and kenny mayne – just amazing. its so much different now on espn- not like it used to be thats for sure. but thank god they still ahve chris berman for football and kenny mayne for that matter.

by CHIEFER on Aug 31, 2009 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

I grew up watching ESPN multiple times every Saturday (and weekdays during the summer) with Kenny Mayne and Dan Patrick and all of the other funny people. It was easily my favorite show.

Now, the show sucks. I rarely watch it. It’s all headlines and forums and debates and stupid shit like that.

Just show me the gosh-darn highlights, please, with some funny one-liners thrown in. That’s all I want to see.

My all-time favorite Kenny Mayne-ism:

“That’s his 35th home run. Not in this game, that would be a record.”

He used it for EVERYTHING. It was so funny. Of course, I was like 10 at the time, so that probably influenced it, but still…

by rockchalk on Aug 31, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha.

And yeah, Fran Charles isn’t bad. But, he’s no Rich Eisen.

Jamie Dukes is annoying. I always get mad when he’s on there, but he isn’t nearly as bad as the people on ESPN, so I live with it.

I like Marshall a lot, too. The funniest part of the alien heads thing was Marshall — he like literally couldn’t breathe he was laughing so hard. He thought it was the funniest thing ever.

Well, it was kind of taken out of context.

On ESPN Countdown, or whatever the hell the show is called, Schefter said something like: “he won’t be playing for the Chiefs in 2009, now whether that is through Thomas just retiring, or him and the Chiefs coming to an injury settlement or the Chiefs just releasing him remains to be seen. But barring unforseen circumstances, Thomas won’t be playing for the Chiefs in 2009.”

Something like that. HE didn’t come out and flatly say that he was retiring.

Yeah.

And if he tweets he is retiring, the Chiefs can call his bluff and just wait for him to retire. Or for him to breach his contract, letting them cut him without payment, etc.

But if he at least keeps it a possibility that he isn’t retiring, he has some leverage.

by CHIEFER on Aug 31, 2009 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I tend to think

the Titans owner might frequently “do things” without the coaching staff knowing anything about it. Also, weren’t they the team that drafted Vince just because the owner wanted to instead of Leinert (although he hasn’t shown much either). Just sayin’ that the reports could be true and Jeff Fischer’s statements could also be true.

Hopes fade once again from blue to red. Go New Chiefs!!

If ZT let it slip that he wanted to retire and maybe Rosenhaus wanted him to wait until after he was cut and given an injury settlement. Ultimately Rosenhaus doesnt really get paid until Zach does.
