Moderator Repost: If you joined AP after April, please read
This was originally titled: "Moderator Note 2: Just a Gentle Reminder" and I posted it on 22 April 2009. Original post here.
I would like to emphasize something Chris and Primetime have noted before, but absent in the Welcome New Readers! post...and add just a dash of PARADE.
Two notes from the SB Nation main page:
1) "SB Nation - of, by, and for the fans."
2) "By empowering fans, SB Nation has become the largest and fastest growing grassroots sports network."
These are probably two of the most important tenants, not only of AP, but the parent company SB Nation. They properly imply that, we, the members, make the site. The quality of our members' effort equates to the quality of our site.
We are all fans. From the birth of AP, Chris and Primetime have been very patient by allowing members to post their thoughts and participate in the living document of AP with minimal oversight or censorship.
That approach has made AP into the community it is today, and we all have evolved along with it.
Ask yourself how many times you have seen Chris, Primetime, UC, or myself censor or delete any posts/comments. Not many. The only instances are when someone has grossly breached the Terms of Service or has flirted with copyright infringement.
They have always treated us as equal contributors to AP, encouraged or constructively critiqued us, and have bent over backwards to properly credit members who have tipped off AP to a story or event.
As the managing editor of the Bills SB Nation Blog, Brian Galliford, wrote of Chris and Primetime, "The folks at AP are Mozart."
Through their effort and measured hand, they have taken the tenants of SB Nation and empowered all of us to share in the ownership of the best blog on SB Nation. They also go beyond the call to regularly promote FanPosts and FanShots to the main page that have followed the guidelines outlined in Chris' rules.
They go beyond even that to give hat tips to us in their own articles, even though sometimes their articles were posted before other members' FanPosts and FanShots.
However, there is an agreement, both written and implied, that we give the effort to be worthy contributors. Much like PARADE's guidance on commenting, it is equally applicable to FanPosts: "When respect is given it must be returned."
Give effort in your FanPosts, follow the guidelines, and let your voice be heard. I know it can be exciting and tempting when first FanPosting to just break the seal and then charge ahead; however, the guidelines still apply.
To all of the veteran members, the same SB Nation tenants apply to us, as well. When a new member is first posting, there is a semi-grace period where mistakes should be pointed out, but the community shouldn't drop the hammer on them immediately (unless the post is just hella douchery).
We all were new to this site and this community at one point. We all made mistakes, and we all learned. The functional dynamic of AP is very different than almost every other forum regardless of topic, that I have ever participated in. It takes some breaking-in to understand the culture and format. Regardless of how much time a member may lurk and learn before posting, it still takes getting your feet wet to truly assimilate.
In that context, here is my point:
- I refuse to allow AP to devolve into a bastard version of 99% of forums online where assholes berate n00bs for the sole sake of being new and their moderators act like iron fisted, e-peni*, imposing their personal preferences on the content of the website by deleting or locking members' voices. H/T to the worthless bastard known as Texas Chief :)
- This is a community first and foremost. The spine of our interaction is the Chiefs, but it is not the totality of the relationship. Through our discussions, jokes, and disagreements, we foster relationships that keep us returning to AP whether or not anything of relevance is occurring with the Chiefs.
AP truly is Chris' analogy of being an online Chiefs' Sports Bar.
- AP is also, as PARADE decreed, "Blogfrica." And for those of you who may not know, AP is part of PARADE's intellectual property too, I believe. That is, in and of itself, another testament to the culture of AP. No one is running around with badges of authority in their signatures. Everyone is a member of the community...unless you're a total dick. :)
-
[U] FanPosts do not make the contributor...Probably the most important contribution any of us have as members is to be a good commenter. It does not go unnoticed. H/T to ChiefsWolf24 in the comments
If you step off the cliff, be prepared to fall. You will be criticized. Not everyone is going to agree with you, and you aren't always going to be perfect (I f^ck up all the time, as you probably know:) ).
Again, back to the "AP Sports Bar": Relax, get saucy, joke around, get sidetracked, but you must have some thick skin. Just because it is online, doesn't strip it of being subject to the normal rule of social groups.
- When a member gets out of hand, we will step in. Some of you rightfully have concerns about certain issues, and we want you to know most of our moderation of members is not viewable to the community, and is done in a private manner. I have already warned and banned 3 members.
- The same goes for some of the FanPosts. As waves of new members come in, we tend to get waves of FanPosts that are not in consonance with the official guidelines. The same tolerance as mentioned earlier applies, but at some point we will let it be known to follow the rules or leave. -That doesn't mean you shouldn't comment or recommend they change, just don't be a total dick about it.
-
Also, the occasional off-topic FanPost is fine. As, Chris answered that situation once, "Let the community decide."
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

This has to stick around for a while…

Ok, so I am not Oscar Wilde or George Bernard Shaw
Thank you for ruining my dreams of having one comment in my life that was Wilde-Shaw-esque.
Are you happy now? I hate you so much. :)

Ughhhhh
I hate Chad…and trying to start a new catch phrase “kiss the baby”
That doesn’t even make sense for the “end” of something…or something being over…It sounds more like someone running for political office…
Don't forget to be an AP-vangelist...Tell A Friend...
fair enough...
but Child Please is GOLD! I use it all the time. I like Chad a lot, but not in a conventional way. He entertains me and he has all the ability in the world, and not only that but he had quite the kick off. If he Esteban Ochocinco turned his volume knob down to 7.5 from 11 then he could potentially be my favorite (non chief division) player.

I absolutely love Chad.
Easily my favorite non-Chiefs player.
If you’re ever in need of a good time, check out his twitter page.
Just in the past couple of hours, he and Packers’ MLB Nick Barnett got in an argument of sorts on whether Packer fans would boo Brett Favre. He then responded to all of the Packer fans who said they would boo him.
Some guy told him he sucked and he had this respone:
@sas_sports dude you suck, you look like Hannibal Lecter in your account picture
LOLZ!
He told the folks over at PFT:
@ProFootballTalk Hello guys hope your day is going well, need any inside info please don’t hesitate to call,I have all access to players :)
And a couple of days ago, after the whole mouthgard issue, he posted on Mortensen’s twitter page that he was suing the NFL for discrimination because he is color blind.
Combine that with his incredible “Child, please” line, and the fact he eats McDonald’s multiple times a day, its just hard not to love him.
But yeah, the whole kiss the baby thing is stupid. It just makes absolutely no sense.
I refuse to buy into Twitter...
and yes its purely because Im stubborn.

I was right there with you.
But it’s worth it JUST to follow Chad. All I do, more or less, is read his tweets. He is just truly a very funny person.
I have a friend who follows comedians on twitter,
and the funniest thing Ive ever heard in my life was a Tweet from John Mayer…
went something like
Had to pee, tried to pee, couldn’t pee, washed hands sat down, have to pee

Thank you for posting this.
I haven’t visited AP in awhile, because it’s become incredibly difficult to navigate the crap to find the good ocmments. I don’t open 90% of the fanposts, because the majority of them I end up opening are often three lines of nonsense.
No offense, but this isn’t the KC Star message boards. It’s a blog. One of the better blogs out there, and easily the best Chiefs blog. Please don’t ruin it.
I’m glad AP is getting so big, and it’s obviously a testament to all of the fabulous work Chris and Joel have done. But even last season, when they were still raking in the huge numbers, the majority of comments were still reasoned and knowledgeable and educational. Now, not so much.
Now, if everyone can get better at commenting like DT has laid out, then this place will just absolutely rock in every way. No way it can’t, with hundreds of fabulous comments every day. Ten times the place it is now.
So, please, everyone learn. This is a fabulous resource. No blog has done more to try and initiate you into the commenting and posting aspect of SB Nation more than AP, at least that I’ve seen. They’re bending over backwards for you, please just cooperate.
Let’s make AP the best sports blog, period.
After Rock Chalk Talk, of course… ;)

And thanks DTR for reposting this.
With lots of new visitors, there will undoubtedly be instability. Blogs going through different phases and we’re navigating a new one now.
Should be a lot of fun.

RC
gets the award for using the word ‘fabulous’ on one comment!
KU football fans be sure to pop in on RC’s SB Nation site, RockChalkTalk.com
My health is not a commodity.
You noticed that, huh?
Yeah, I have buzz words, and I tend to overuse them. I suppose that fabulous is the current one, but another favorite of mine is “super”, as well as “incredible”. They all basically mean the same thing, I just go in phases, I suppose, where I use one more than the other.
Get over it.
Way to go Boss
I think this will help a lot of folks gain perspective about AP.
I also want to thank Chris and Joel for being patient with me as I “grew up” blogging here (my first post would have had virtual tomatoes thrown at it by today’s standards!), and the freedom they do give us to make this blog what it is. I love the challenge that posting presents to the fan side of me, and the interaction with everybody in the comments. I often wish my job allowed me more time to do just that! But I enjoy the time that I do get to spend on here, and it has a lot to do with the supportive mindset that people have.
Chris is right. AP is evolving into a new stage right before our eyes, and I for one am anxious to see what’s next.
These guidelines are worthwhile
Everyone should read them, noobs and vets. Being a good member of AP boils down to practicing a few simple things:
1) Keep your cool!
2) Read before you post; If there’s something you want to say, make sure there’s not a post covering your topic already underway. If there is, just go comment on that one. Please don’t create a redundant thread. PLEASE.
3) Know the difference between a FANSHOT and a FANPOST; If you want to share a link or ask the community a question, Chiefs related or otherwise, give us your best FANSHOT. If you’ve thoughtfully taken the time to intelligently lay out a case for a topic, by all means present your best work in a FANPOST. FANPOSTS = YOUR BEST WORK. Got it? Good!
4) If a moderator or an couple of members apply a little heat to the back of your pants, then please, refer to any of the numerous well-written and informative guides that have been published here at AP.
Welcome aboard and enjoy. GEAUX CHIEFS!
Braccae illae virides cum subucula rosea et tunica Caledonia-quam elenganter concinnatur!
Thanks Guys!
I for one left the staff of another Chiefs blog not to be named here over a year ago because of their censorship of my legitimate criticism of their policy on personal attacks between posters o the site. And I left because he removed my comment from the site with the less than quasi-excuse that it was detrimental to his prospects of generating advertising revenues if the posting public or his own staff was critical of site policies. Horse poo! You guys have it right. Allowing posters to become part of the living document with as little editing and moralizing is absolutely the American way… and as such, what is happening here is real journalism at its root as opposed to sites more interested in filthy money grabbing (you KNOW who you are). Congrats on stepping in to remind folks to be what they would hope to find here, because they will make it happen by doing that very thing.
I personally tend to be a lurker, soaking up the info from those with more access than myself. As a previous member of a linked website ( not to be named…..AA) that I was banned from for requesting the MAIN MAN drop the political crap and keep it to football, or better yet Chiefs football, I very much appreciate the approach here and constantly recommend this site to other Chiefs fans ( whenever I stumble across them here in NC ). Thanks for all the hard work you guys do and for the best Chiefs site on the web!
I have noticed that trend...and likewise avoided it...
Don't forget to be an AP-vangelist...Tell A Friend...
Agreed
Forgive my lack of experience and understanding, but does anyone know if the total number of rec’d posts could be captured and included on a persons profile? That way perhaps there might be some incentive to produce better quality fan posts/shots, just wondering if that had ever been discussed.
Nascar probably does that
AP has memory of good stuff and bad stuff. And who posts what.
Thus you see certain people’s stuff getting lots of rec’s.
I aspire as we all should to getting rec’s in fanposts, also in comments.
Going Green on the comments to me is awesome. I think I have two :)
Nearly a 100 posts and I like rec’s wnen I comment! Oh nearly 5000 of those too.
and the Butt of AP jokes is acceptence to The Wolfpack.
SO….

Thank you for the post and info
Like oxford_chief I have to hunt down my Chiefs news from out of state. Fortunately, there is a Chiefs bar here in phoenix to watch the games at, but being this close to the west coast it’s mostly Raider Nation, Chargers and of course Cards info in the news. After lurking and reading several blogs and being a former commentor on BG’s site, I joined today and I’ll try to keep all the great advice I’ve found in mind as I traverse this virtual plane of commentariate. Thank you everyone for making this site worth reading.
Nice site
I’m a KC Star forum convert. I got sick of the total tools there that spewed constant uneducated crap. I’m all for disagreeing with people, as long as it can be done in a format that tells me you’re not a complete idiot. HermsTheMan and nswclb troll that site and spam the shit out of it with retaded dick head statements.
Anyways, I think I have a handle on the rules: Don’t be an uneducated dick and you’ll be ok. Check. I think I can follow those. I might have a hard time with the not being a dick part though. j/k ;)
