Positive Analysis on the game

I won't go into how bad the line play was or Cassel getting hurt but I do feel good about the following:

In my opinion the line looked better with the new guys at RG and RT.  I think they are an upgrade as I do not even see Goff or McIntosh making the team at this point.

If you watch the play that Cassel got hurt it shows just how much the whole line can get screwed up by one or two horrible lineman.  Waters could not even get to his man because the double team got beat so bad  So I think we will be better at RG and RT and that should make everyone better.

If we can judge by the reaction from the last 2 weeks count on something happening BIG to upgrade our team again this week.  Pioli and Haley do not seem content to just go play with this team and will keep searching.  I expect one more trade and being VERY active in both rounds of cuts.

The RB combo of Charles and LJ is going to work very well.  Charles is special if he keeps maturing.

I think Lelie makes this team because of his speed and he will do well with Bowe.  Anyone have a clue where Bradley is?  I doubt Toomer makes the team.

Matt Gut is legit.  He may never be more than a solid backup but I would love to see what he can do with the number 1's.

Defense is coming along a LOT faster than I thought.  We made a MAJOR switch from 4-3 to 3-4 and we are already a better than we were last year.  Tamba will get a 10 sacks this year and be a force.  Jackson is one of the better picks we have made in years.  He fits the system perfectly and is ahead of schedule.  Same can be said for Magee.

The secondary is solid other than Pollard.  He wont be a chief next year.

We still have a lot of holes BUT we are building this through the draft and with two 2nd's next year and I am sure we will acquire more picks I can see us getting 4 more impact players...hopefully OL, OL, SS, and NT.

Just trying to stay positive I was at the game and it was UGLY but we only won 6 games in the last 2 years so we have work to do.

Analysis

What was going on with the o-line?B.Richardson was playing LT?The line seemed to open holes for the run game but couldn’t protect the qb’s.Was TT that bad or was it another case of running for his life or worse trying to stand in the pocket to prove he could(didn’t work)?

A little of both.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

well...

I’ve noticed that B Rich can hold his own at RT, but sucks big time at LT.

I was encouraged by the improvement in the run blocking, in general.

But, i gotta take another look at the pass protection…

Pollard gone after this year???

I know he had a bad play last night but, do you really think that?

by Chiefsfan1970 on Aug 30, 2009 11:02 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah not sure what crack pipe he was token on!

Pollard brings the hammer every play. He may miss an occasional takcle, ( which should never happen in the secondary) but damn he is going to be one of the better strong safetys in the league. Stupid to get rid of such talent when our backups are old with Brown and half- stupid with McGraw and that other tool. Pollard will be a Chief for a while

Pollard was a major disappointment last night

no doubt about it, he missed on a lot of plays, not just the TD play. His tackling was atrocious last night. It really let me down cuz I thought he was gonna be a leader on this defense. I think being without Page hurt him a lot since those two have played together since they came into the league.

Corey Mays didnt get any work on defense, but I hope that doesn’t mean we’ll be starting Demorrio. Williams made some plays, but he whiffed a lot too and was out of position on more than a handful or runs.

I was impressed with how our line did in the run blocking game for the most part, but our pass protection needs to step it up.

For justice we must go to Don Pioli

I just don't see it in Pollard...

I just don’t think he is the difference maker a top defense needs (aka bob sanders, ed reed, troy palamalu, etc) I don’t see him jumping routes and laying that knockout blow and especially don’t see him with very many pass breakups or Ints. Just because he has some tackles does not mean they are the right tackles.

I agree when Goff was out our run offense was much better…pass blocking has some work.

No knockout blow?

Are you kidding? Pollard has laid down many a devastating hit. He nearly killed Darren Sproles last year. I agree to an extent with your other points, but you are totally wrong about the inability to lay down a knockout blow.

I think his play was carefully choreographed last year, which seems to be a Cunningham trademark.

Maybe he can break out and think for himself, but I still get the impression he’s not playing all that smart. That’s one of the reasons this Chiefs defense of the past several years has been suckers for the misdirection/change-of-direction from opposing offenses. At some point, the guys playing behind the d-line have to trust that things are gonna be plugged up wherever they go and rather than just piling on top after the play is made, be one of the guys who thinks in terms of mopping up in areas away from the big pile.

If the play goes left, let the LB/S on that side do the mopping up, and if you’re on the right side, stay in position against the cutback. You have to learn to trust that people are going to do their jobs and just do YOUR job, so the cutback looks like it OUGHT to look: A busted play that was snuffed out and the desperation cutback was mopped up.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

A couple things...
I doubt Toomer makes the team.

It is hard to tell who Pioli and Haley like…if they are keeping Toomer on the 2nd and 3rd teams to give others more playing time or if it is because he is inferior…

The secondary is solid other than Pollard. He wont be a chief next year.

I would like to bet you money on that…

agreed

I would be VERY surprised to see Toomer get cut.

But, I’d be freakin shocked to see Pollard shipped out.
