Chiefs to Struggle with Shotgun/Spread Offenses?
I hate to quote Peter King again, but as you'll read, this item actually comes from The Football Outsiders, whom I deeply respect as football analysts. King's item 5.b. of "Ten Things I Think I Think" clearly focuses on my biggest worry about Pendergast running our defense: susceptibility to shotgun/spread offenses.
This topic has been addressed before on AP, but I believe a refresher is in order. It is more likely than not that we will continue to see the proliferation of spread-style offenses in the NFL in the immediate future. Pendergast left one bottom-15 pass defense to run bottom-5 pass defense that set the record for the fewest total sacks in a season. Further compounding the problems: there is no Adrian Wilson in the Chiefs' defensive backfield.
I'm as happy as anyone about this offseason, but I'm going to have a microscope on Pendergast. His track record leaves much to be desired.

True that!!
I don’t think this article is that far off though. I see this defense being stout against the run and possibly struggling against the spread but, there are a lot of good defenses who have a hard time defending the spread.
Defensive downside: I don’t see us generating a GREAT pass rush against the spread although it will be much better than last year.
Defensive upside: Our DBs will be widely known in the next year or two as one of the finest secondaries in the league. We have CRAZY talent in our defensive backfield.

I'm almost positive
That he only has a 1 year contract.

For me it depends on what Pendergast defense we see this year.
Cardinals 9-7 regular season defense or Cardinals playoff defense.
They looked AWESOME in the playoffs… Especially against the Panthers.

Big time
the Panthers didn’t know what the hell was going on in that game the Cards opened the playbook on them
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

First of all, Chiefs will practice against a lot of spread.
Under Cunningham, the Chiefs usually backed off against spread and extra WR sets. I think it’s the wrong way to go. What you should do is get MORE aggressive, which was the surest formula against the run ‘n’ shoot of old, if you had the balls to bring it. When you back off against it, you’re giving MORE receivers a free release off the line, which is the worst thing you can do, IMO.
On a trip to the U.N. in New York City, the Dalai Lama sneaked out of his hotel to break his vows and eat an American hot dog. Checking up and down the street for witnesses, he whispered to the vendor "Make me one with everything."
