Open Thread #4: Matt Cassel Injury Update; Should be Back Next Week
Update Sunday 9:10 PM: Cassel out 2-4 weeks. Head here for more.
We're into the fourth quarter. Here are the game's stats.
It's 14 to 7 in favor of the Seattle Seahawks. Combined, the teams' kickers are 1 for 6. The Chiefs have been getting beat up tonight. QB Matt Cassel (leg), CB Brandon Flowers (shoulder) and WR Devard Darling (leg) have all left the field with injuries.
The latest word on Matt Cassel's injury is that it is a minor knee sprain. He should be back next week.
So this game isn't what we hoped for but wow, it could have been a lot worse.

Will the same offensive line be back too?

I bet not
I think we’ll have at least one new starter next week, if not two.

I agree..
They’ve been wheeling and dealing all along. Why stop now? I think they really want to get a winning team right out the gate. Remember, they come here with the top billing available.
You think they want Mike Smith showing them up? Or Parcells dolphins? Wants to let Belichek become the reason everyone thinks he succeeded in NE?
He’s got his entire life’s work on the line here (Pioli does). He can’t afford to disappoint. I’m not saying we should have HIGH expectations this year compared to other teams but for sure compared to our Chiefs of last year.
There’s a lot of work to be done in KC yet folks…a lot!! But we will support our team no matter what, that’s what we do…we ’re fans!! Their trying for sure.

I Hate Preseason
Just for crap like this.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.

And I Bet They Hold Cassel Out Of The Final Preseason Game
No point in risking aggravating a sprain when you can give him an extra week’s rest.

Thoughts
1. Thiggy not only cost himself a job, he cost the Chiefs a draft pick.
2. If Pioli gets ANYTHING for Thigpen now, he’s a genius.
3. LJ looks sluggish but still has a spark here and there.
4. Bowe is the real deal.
5. Gutierrez should be first backup.
6. Tyson Jackson is for real.
7. We have zero depth in the secondary.
8. RBs are actually deep.
9. Lelie doing ok against 2nd/3rd string.
10. Succop will be ok.

It's a bigger stretch for him to make LB.
Could be a hammer if he develops. But mightn’t develop quickly enough. If he gets cut, he’d make sense as a 4-3 DE, but he’s been training for OLB. Hope he isn’t left in no man’s land in September.

The Stats say
That the D is far worse than anything Herm put on the field. Hasselbeck had a great game’s full of stats in a half against our starting D. The offensive stats look much worse than anything from last year outside of Atlanta. It is early morning here in the ME. Am disappointed I woke up early to listen to this on the radio. Lenny keeps talking about all the open Hawk WRs.

Story of the game
is that it doesn’t look like Thigpen is cut out for being a KC QB. He may have hurt his trade value (a lot!) but enought teams have been interested in him they’ll probably count more on what he did last year. Some other players got themselves cut.
I’m betting we have 2 or 3 new O linemen before the season.

Lost starting QB way early.
Played 3rd stringer, poor pocket passer most of the rest of the game.
Took starting RB out way early.
Hawks leave starters in entire half.
First TD for Hawks was – Flowers, Page with Colclough (who may not even make team) getting beat by TJ Housh.
