Open Thread #3: Ryan Succop Misses Wide Left; Tyler Thigpen Shaky Replacing Injured Matt Cassel

The Good: The Kansas City Chiefs' defense is actually generating a pass rush from time to time.

The Bad: Ryan Succop missed a 28-yard field goal.

The Ugly: Three fumbles by the Chiefs.

More observations:

The Seahawks have just scored, tying the game at 7 to 7. It's almost half time. The Seahawks get the ball first in the second half.

Ahem
Ryan Succop missed a 28-yard field goal.

Just trying to remember how many under 30 field goals Connor Barth missed last year. :)

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.

In Favor Of A Guy Who Also Didn't Miss Any Under 30 Field Goals

It’s a shame that we have no way of knowing what sort of accuracy on mid-range field goals Ryan Succop has shown over his career.

Oh wait.

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.

He's the kicker

and you’ll just have to accept that. That decision has been made. Fine he shanked a 28 yarder. Stop whining about your mancrush on Barth and move on. He’s becoming the Bobby Sippio of kickers.

I Don't Have To Accept Anything

Barth had a weaker leg, but at least he was a given on the chip shots. Succop isn’t. And if Succop struggles during the regular season I’ll still say we should have Barth instead of him.

Actually, I'd Rather He Hit Them

I’d rather be proven wrong and Succop turned out to be an All-Pro because he’s got a great leg. But I thought it was a really stupid move by Pioli because the guy has been inconsistent pretty much his whole career, and now we’re seeing that yes, he’s inconsistent. Oh well…Pyrrhic victory.

Competition Does Bring Out The Best In Players

I’ve never bought the whole “But we don’t want to rattle him and undermine his confidence” line. If a player can’t hack it when competing for his job, how’s he going to hack it in the regular season? It’s not like the pressure gets less once you’re facing 300 pound linemen who want to smash you as opposed to guys who let up in practice.

Maybe Pioli football than you do

He finally runs into some difficulty in the 3rd game and you use that as proof. Yet you ignored everything else. Look at the entire picture instead of just cherry picking.

by stram#1 on Aug 29, 2009 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cherry Picking?

Cherry picking what? I pointed out Succop’s career stats. All you’ve done is complain about me and offer no evidence to back your position other than “you don’t know more than Pioli”.

Well, I knew that Succop was inconsistent on mid-range field goals and Barth wasn’t. So I guess in that instance I knew a little more than both Pioli and Haley. :)

Nothing to make a judgement on.

People react differently. Sometimes a sprain is so painful you think it’s broken. Sometimes a serious tear hurts less.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

He seems to be grabbing the front of his knee in the photo and not the side…that indicates it’s not an ACL, I believe. There are plenty of bad things that can happen to the front of the knee (patellar tendon) but also more that aren’t that serious…possibly just a few weeks out.

I Was All In Favor Of Eugene Monroe

If we were going to reach for a player, I’d rather it was a tackle instead of a d-lineman. But then if the Chiefs have a bad year, I’m sure we’ll have a crack at an o-lineman in 2010.

+1 Me, too, UC.

I’m OK with changing to 3-4 and even with drafting D-Line, to help get it right. But I wasn’t OK with Cassel-before-O-Line. I was a Monroe booster before the draft.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

And Just To Be Clear

I like Tyson Jackson. He’s a good selection for us. But not when we’ve invested as much as we have in a QB without doing anything significant to upgrade his o-line.

Play Nice Guys

No need to get hostile with each other over a preseason game.

And, JHWK, no need to tell people to calm down either…if he wants to get heated, let him get heated.

It's Also A Factor Of Having A Not Great Team (And, By Extension, A Not Good Bench)

The only thing that really worries me about this game is the injuries. Beyond that preseason is pretty meaningless.

The Chiefs aren’t a good team this year…they look worse because they have a terrible bench. A lot of the collapse is due to talent of the bench, not conditioning of the starters. And preseason results are meaningless anyway.

7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.

something to keep in mind

with or without a win, the object of the first half here may have been to try and get something more for thiggy. I do believe pioli is not above sacrificing a preseason game in the win column for something that matters later

If that be the case, methinks it's backfired.

Croyle, Guit > Thigpen

I think the offense might be ok with a QB back there.

Too much Thiggy this preseason, not enough Cassel, Croyle and Guit

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

You guys think

they will play Cassel and th efirst team offense more next week? I mean more than they would have? Just to get him in sync.

I think we all learned a valuable lesson today...

i.e. please don’t cut Gutierrez, he has the ability to spell Cassel with a similar skill set for a game or two
