Jags need to pull the trigger on Thigpen now.
I believe it would serve the Jaguars well to pull the trigger on the Thigpen trade right now. It all comes down to one thing.
Money.
Jacksonville needs to find an heir to David Garrard. He's 31 years old and struggled last year compared to his incredible 2007 campaign, which landed him a $60 million dollar contract over six years. The Jaguars' problem right now is that they can't afford to draft a high round QB or pay a decent free agent QB because it will require too much of a money investment in one position. They are also without a 2nd round pick next year and have other needs.
In comes Tyler Thigpen... a 24-year-old QB who started in 11 games last year, threw 18 TD's to 12 INTs, rushed for more yards than any other NFL quarterback (and for more YPC than any NFL player with over 50 rushes), and did this all behind one of the NFL's worst offensive lines. Here's the kicker: he's getting paid the salary of a 7th rounder.
The Jags can trade for Thigpen and pay him next to nothing for being a reliable backup, and in the meantime train him to be QB of the future. If Garrard stays healthy and Thigpen remains his backup, the Jags should have an easy time resigning Thigpen when he becomes a free-agent. Thigpen would have incentive to stay in Jacksonville since it's close to his home in Carolina and since he'd know he's being trained to be a starter. His market value would be lower in the future than it would be this year, coming off a good season for a QB who had never started an NFL game before.
For the naysayers that think Thigpen can't perform under center, consider these stats: 10 TD's vs 0 INTs under center. Yeah, shut up.
It would serve the Jags well to get this deal done, and I think their management is well aware of it. Hence why negotiations are still ongoing.
For a QB of his age, ability, and contract price, the Jags should offer a 4th rounder. I think it would get the deal done. I believe he is worth a 3rd easily, but I don't think many teams would be willing to fork up a 3rd for a backup QB.
Jags, make this deal happen. 4th rounder for Tyler Thigpen.

If anybody has the email address of the Jags GM
could you just send him a link to this post please.
Ten sacks in a season! For crying out loud that's what I used to average per game using DT in Tecmo Bowl!

I like the concept
The Jaguars are in desperation mode for receivers right now. If they can use a fourth on a guy that will eventually start, they can start building around him while Garrard scapegoats.
They can get a solid WR and TE in next years draft if they can hold on to their 3rd and 1st and give Thigpen would have to try in order to fail
Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

Well, you better not show the powers that be in Jacksonville this little gem:
And so, Craig finds himself leaping from blog to blog, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap, will be the leap home.

Well Craig
Since the NFL reporting media is abuzz over this potential deal, and AP is as high-profile a site as there is with regards to the Chiefs, I’d say you just did exactly that.
Just sayin’ ;)

GM's At Times Puzzling!
I have trouble understanding why some GM’s won’t give up a fourth round pick and hold tight on a five! In the grand scheme of things, a 4th or a 5th does not amount to any difference, especially when you can always trade up if you want a certain player in the draft! GM’s like to play poker and screw with peoples minds! If they want Thigpen they should give up what’s being asked for or get the hell out of the way!!!

Craig is a Raider fan.....
dude please you think posting that up there takes away from his season at all, If anything it further helps his case. In his FIRST start he threw 3 picks so that means for the rest of the year he had a 2/1 TD Ints ratio. For a rookie that is very good. Plus he ran for more yards then any other QB in the league. Your the Homer, Anyways I bet we dont get rid of him, There not gonna cut thigpen for any reason. Do you think you could even get a 7th for guitterez, So you would cut someone your asking a 3rd for. Thigpen will probably start the year as Cassell’s back up if The jags dont come correct.

I’m actually a Tyler Thigpen fan, I just thought it was a funny picture.

jags are falling off the map quick really quick
thigpen wont anwer their prayers ill tell you that. he cant even take a snap from under center. I can take a snap under center. If we can get a 4th rounder for that guy pioli will recieve a gift at his front door the next day . that looks something like this

very nice pic
on the Thigpen note he had 10 td’s from under center for your information.I always thought you had good football knowledge, I guess the smell of all that lubrication is getting to you.

True he may have had 10 td undercenter but the point is we had to change our entire play book to fulfill his needs which effected our run game . we werent able to control the clock in crucial situations or run the ball in short yardage because every team knew what we were doing if he took a snap under center.

They also had to change the system because it took out two QB's
granted 1 was old and the other was Brokie.
And on it affecting the running game, how do you explain that we haven’t showed a running game so far this year? I think it has more to do with our O-line not making holes no matter what system it is. Our O-line is bad that has been discussed on here a lot.
As far as changing the system to fit his needs, of course every team runs a system that best fits the QB. We are still running 50% of the plays out of the shotgun this year because that system fits Cassel just as much as it does Thigpen.

the only way i see this trade happening
Is if thigpen has a good game against the seahawks.

I really don't want to see this trade happen.
I am starting to agree that maybe the Chiefs have a legitimate NFL QB roster.
G was out a job when we picked him up and not a waiver wire pick I think.
Everyone could have grabbed him yet didn’t, so if G is back out there we have a shot to grab him again.
Thigpen and Croyle will be snapped up IMO.

Agree
Interesting to me how he seems to have gone from hero to zero in just a few months. Thigpen is a good QB, just needs a bit more seasoning. We all agreed last season, that nearly any QB behind our O-Line was bound to get killed, or at the least have horrible stats. IMO Thigpen held his own and did a great job. Sure the scheme was changed to assist him, but it also was aimed at assisting our backs, linemen and receivers, who all seemed to under perform.
If we trade Thigpen, in 3 – 5 years, there will be threads talking about trying to trade back for him.

The Chiefs need to keep Thiggy. As others have said, considering the circumstances he played with last year, he did a damn fine job. He is young, and can improve. Thiggy would be an excellent backup QB should Cassel get injured. I would severely disappointed if Thigpen when to the Jags.
by amazingtaters on Aug 29, 2009 11:15 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
The Jags are a much better fit for his skillset than the Chiefs
We are going to need a QB who can come in and play behind Matt Cassel and run the offense the way it is supposed to run. Thiggy is a TOTALLY different style of player than our offense will demand. He was fun to watch last year but, he still needs work.
He would be a pretty good fit in Jax though. Their offense is much more suitable to his style of play. I can’t really think of a better fit for him.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Aug 29, 2009 2:30 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
stop with the Croyle love
If they trade Thigpen than G-man will be the #2, I sure Haley wants a QB that can’t score TD’s and has to worry about every little hit he takes, Lets not forget he sucks at handing off the the RB, last week he hit the RB in the arm with the ball.
