Kansas City Chiefs K Succop Has Been Nearly Perfect

Geez.  I didn't know the Scott Pioli football scouting prowess extended to kickers as well as linemen.  The Kansas City Chiefs have played no "real" games yet but it's becoming clear that, for the time being, Todd Haley and Pioli "got it right" with Mr. Irrelevant Ryan Succop.

"We probably kick five a day," Succop said according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star.  "So it's going well."

Speaking to reporters following practice, Succop said he had missed only FOUR kicks during all of training camp.

Wow.  Let's break this down in approximate numbers.

Five kicks a day.  20 days of practice since camp started on August 1st.  That's a 96% success rate.

"There’s still a lot of work to be done. In all areas of kicking, you always want to improve, You never stay the same, so you’re always trying to get better whether it’s hitting kickoffs deeper in the end zone or with more hang time or better direction or being more accurate on field goals."

He's 3/3 this preseason with a rain-soaked long of 47 yards.

"It's going well" is an understatement.  Thus far, it's outstanding.

I had my doubts

but I am enjoying being wrong on this guy. Seems like a cool customer. Let’s hope he keeps it up. With a leg like that if he can stay accurate the kid could very well win us some games.

God those words still haunt my dreams. Damn you * **!

you put succop in barths shoes last year against the chargers at arrowhead

and we have 3 wins instead of 2 – not that it makes a difference now, but im 99.9% sure this kid makes that kick.

i remember watching the WWII movie

as a kid and thought it would be a awesome expression to use when someone puts a good leg behind something. always fun when playing Mortal Kombat (the original) and you give someone a good boot to the chin and you scream out “OOOOH DAS BOOT BITCH!!!”

though i’m sure i’m not the one you heard that from, it’s a good name for succop. can you imagine the fear that would put into an opposing team, when chanted, when he comes out to when a game. that gives me chills just thinking about it. hopefully the kid continues to live up to the name.

I have to give credit to Steve_Chiefs for "Das Boot"

I looked it up using the search option on this site, Steve_Chiefs wrote it first on Aug 3 at 12:30pm. Steve_Chiefs, wherever you are, we are much obliged to you sir!

If Succop is 88% or better in his rookie year

we’ll be sitting pretty! He’ll be one of the better kicekrs in the league. The fact this kid is kicking at a clip of 96% in the preseason is dynamite. Lets hoep he continue to put his kickoffs 3 yds deep in the endzone everytime too.

by cameltoeuchdowns on Aug 28, 2009 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

As cool as Mr. Relevant sounds...

i’d much rather hear chants of DAS BOOT! after he nails a field goal! How can you not love beer fest!

I'll be there tomorrow

Ok from here on out we gotta get this rolling at arrowhead. DAS BOOT. It’s way too cool to pass up.

I’ll spread the word while we’re tailgating. Need some help ;)

by Fyzzle on Aug 28, 2009 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions

make sure to make a butt load of posters with DAS BOOT on it

and pass them out. i’m sure a few tv cameras will pick them up. once that happens than it’s history.

Curious!

Curious to hear what Chris Berman comes up with for him! Sometimes he does a really great job with the nicknames!

Should be thrown in front of a train. He just gets on my nerves nowadays.

Succop is the man!

I love that the kickoffs are actually getting into the endzone now. I haven’t seen that in KC for a long time. Our kicking game just improved by leaps and bounds in ALL aspects.

What's awesome

The Chiefs draft a quality kicking machine at the end of the 7th round
The Raiders do it in the 1st round.

And Succop actually has accuracy.

He’s not just some drunk bum that runs at the ball and kicks it as hard as he can.

I'm warming up my I told you so's

I know Herm left a bad taste in everyones mouth all around and its hard to be optimistic about things but this is a prime example of what can happen with this team. We probably won’t win pretty or easily but I think there are more Ryan Succops on this team who are ready to step it up and play.

I'm concerned.

First a post about no injuries, now one about how accurate the kicker is. We’re screwed.

by NJ Chiefs Fan on Aug 28, 2009 2:16 PM CDT reply actions

Hmm... I seem to remember him missing more than 4.

And it seems like the ones he did miss were always short range ones.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer though… I bet he’s still hitting over 85% which is amazing for us.

sometimes easy tasks

are the hardest, because we get complacent and think that they are gimmes.

by Leaf on Aug 28, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Until we hear comparable numbers..

I don’t think that we can justify being excited here. For all I know, no kicker, on any team, has missed more than four. Anybody got numbers from another teams starting kicker in training camp/preseason?

by KCMizzou on Aug 28, 2009 3:57 PM CDT reply actions

Haley? Pioli? Nope. Neither. Hoffman.

In case no one has noticed, we got the NFL’s best kicking coach in Steve Hoffman. How Ryan does this year is all “Coach Hoff.” He’s been doing this with unknown rookies for 20 years. Ryan’s gonna be an All-Pro, mark those words.

Thank thee

by JChief on Aug 28, 2009 5:48 PM CDT reply actions

Let's give credit where credit is due

Thanks to loadmonster for bringing to everyone’s attention the fact that Steve Hoffman shoud get credit for Succop. Haley and Pioli simply put their stamp on things and any improvements he made in the off-season are also as a result of Hoffman. Notice how Haley is always vague in his press conferences about who is responsible for what and never gives any props to coaches.
