2008 Stats for 2009 Chiefs O-Linemen

Stay connected for news and updates

There has been a lot of talk recently about the O-Line, given that thus far the performance has been less than stellar.  The fact we just traded for two players from the Dolphins means changes will be coming.  There have been a couple of very good posts about the new players and the potential changes/improvements for the O-Line.  I wont go to far into analysis, I will leave that to better and more knowledgeable men (or women).  Below are the stats from last years starters, and then the linemen seemingly in the hunt for playing time this year.

All stats from Stats, Inc.  Here and our friends at Bolts from the Blue.

Last years starters:

Pos. Name Games  Games Started Sacks Allowed False Starts Holding Sacks Per Pass Play Rank Per Postion

LT  Brandon Albert 15 15 4.5 1 0 0.0083 13
LG Brian Waters 16 16 1 0 2 0.0017 6
C Rudy Niswanger 15 15 3.5 0 3 0.0065 23
RG Adrian jones 11 10 1 1 1 0.0028 10
RT Damion McIntosh 16 16 7 3 0 0.0121 21

The numbers speak for themselves, as you can see Damion McIntosh struggled on the right side.  Our rookie LT did a good job and will only get better.  Brian Waters earned his Pro Bowl invite.  According to Stats, Inc. Adrian Jones didn't give up many sacks, probably because Thigpen knew what to expect and just started running away immediately.  The rank per postion category uses a simple formula.  Takes the total number of pass play per team, divides them evenly over the 16 game schedule, and then divides the sacks given up per games started by the linemen.  I'll demonstrate with Brian Waters:  The Chiefs threw the ball 578 times last year, which averages to 36.1 attempts per game.  Brian allowed 1 sack last year.  Take 1, divide it by 578 and you get 0.0017, his sack per pass play number.  Please keep in mind this is inexact science, I cant verify if Brian or any linemen was in for everyone of these pass plays or not.

Players in contention for playing time, a mix of new players and back-ups form last year.

Pos. Name Games  Games Started Sacks Allowed False Starts Holding Sacks Per Pass Play Rank Per Postion
G/C Wade Smith 15 7 2 0 0 0.0039 10 at LG  15 at LG
RG/RT Ikechuku Ndukwe 16 15 1 4 2 0.0021 6 at RG    1 at RT
C/RG Andy Alleman 15 4 1 4 0 0.0077 20 at RG Tie 28 at C
C Eric Ghiaciuc 16 16 4 1 1 0.0071 24
RG Mike Goff 16 16 4.5 2 1 0.0089 23
RT Barry Richardson 6 0 0 0 0 0 ?

It appears that Ndukwe is a very good pick-up.  So much so I might learn how to spell his name and not look it up every time.    Eric Ghiaciuc struggled last year, perhaps we should have taken a hint  when the Bengals fans were applauding his exit from there.  Mike Goff wont be missed to much in San Diego either, but Im still surprised he is struggling this much so far.   Colin Brown isn't in there, obviously because he was a draft choice, but I think he will be in the rotation either at RG or RT.

Everyone of these linemen are here competing for a spot somewhere.  LT and LG are sset in stone, which means there are 11 players competing for 8 or 9 roster spots.  Im looking forward to seeing the end result.  Take from this what you will, I appreciate all feedback.  This is my first analytical fanpost, please tell me what you think and feel free to give me any and all advice, I probably need it.
