Poll: What's Tyler Thigpen worth?

We have a notorious bias on ArrowheadPride, but let's give it a shot anyway.

Positives

  • Incredibly athletic QB.
  • Performed quite well throughout last season surrounded by limited talent.
  • More often than not, a great improvisor.
  • There are few QBs better at the bootleg or other plays that demand QB athleticism.
  • Great character.
  • Decent to great leader, if given the keys to an offense.  Can be quite fiery.
  • Very durable.
  • Can put up solid numbers in the shotgun.
  • He can step up at any moment in case your #1 QB goes down.
  • Negatives

  • Accuracy is a huge question.
  • Consistency is a huge question.
  • Struggles under center.
  • For every two good improvisations, there's one that's really bad.
  • Has been known to abandon good QB mechanics in a bind.
  • Stares down receivers.
  • Over-relies on your team's best receivers.
  • Is too prone to tuck the ball and run.
  • In short:

We Chiefs fans are so used to Tyler Thigpen's play that we give him his own category.  How many times have you heard "Thigpen looks like Thigpen" from a Chiefs fan over the relatively small time we've known him?  He's exciting, radically different, radically inconsistent, brilliant sometimes and idiotic other times, but very well liked by his teammates.

I say he's a career backup in this league for the teams that are willing to try to harness his unique set of skills.  There shouldn't be that many teams that are.

    I say he's a 5th rounder.

    Wrong

What team did you watch last year?

Thigpen is alright, but he will never be a fulltime NFL starter. There is no way he becomes “dangerous.”

How do you not call him dangerous?

He out scored 16 or 17 other starting QB’s in the league in only 11 games. It’s not his fault he didn’t have an O-line, defense, special teams or good coaches. The guys couldn’t do everything.

    Let go of the man-crush

Thigpen does not play well at QB in a traditional offensive setup. Haley was going to implement his offense and that means Thigpen would not start.

Look we are all Chiefs fans, and we all want a SB win. Thigpen is not the guy to get us there and anyone who thinks he is going to end up starting ANYWHERE is fooling themselves.

    who said anything about starting

Cassel is our starter since you didn’t know, Thigpen is a back-up. and you must be best friends with Haley because just a few days ago Cassel didn’t even know exactly what kind of offense we would be running.

by bringbacktheglory on Aug 27, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

    I think the point is...

Gannon was clearly a better QB (in every way) than Grbac. I won’t say Cassel is a clearly better QB than Thigpen, but of the two Cassel seems the more capable. Perhaps Thigpen will be a great QB, but at least at the time of the deal, the move we made was not a bad one.

    So Matt Cassel is Grbac?

I understand people have special mancrushes on Thigpen but Cassel is clearly a better all around football player and is far from Grbac.

What threw the Chiefs with regard to Gannon were all those comebacks that fell short (Sound familiar)

Gannon would throw for like 350 yards in the 2nd half, desperate to un-do the 1st half of Martyball. And with defenses primed against the pass, he threw a few picks. What griped ME was Gannon got blamed for those losses, even though he was like the ONE bright spot on the offense.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I agree that that is his value...

But for once this year NFL.com made a good point last night. His value should be a bit higher then normal because of the market and the lack of good, quality QBs available and his potential to be something more then a backup. So talentwise he is only a 4th or 5th guy I think but because of the market right now may demand more.

Sage Rosenfels was traded for a fourth and I think he's better than Thigpen so.....

while I’d like a fourth or third, I doubt a team will budge off that 5th.

by Chiefs447 on Aug 27, 2009 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

    But

Rosenfels is probably as good as he is ever going to get, where as Tyler has a lot of potential to get much better. Or at least that’s the common thinking anyway.

That was also right before the draft.

    Yep

I said a 4th. He’s not a great QB so a 1, 2 or 3 seem out of the question. He is a solid QB and by virtue of the position, 5, 6 or 7 are just not enough.

    I voted 4th

But a 3rd would be perfect. With a first round draft pick, 2 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd, that should ultimately fill any holes that we find in the 2009 season.

by benton on Aug 27, 2009 10:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think starting is really in question.

Jacksonville for example is looking for a quality backup for Garrard, but your right if Garrard goes down or is ineffective, it should be a 3rd if Tyler has “X” amount of snaps.

And so, Craig finds himself leaping from blog to blog, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap, will be the leap home.

by craig in calgary on Aug 27, 2009 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

    I'd love a 4th but

Got to keep in mind that there are other QB’s about to get cut as well, right now Thigpen’s stock is up but it won’t stay that way. We can’t be too greedy We need to get what we can for him Now before the other teams start making their cuts. If we hold out too long his value will drop and if it drops too far it will come down to just waiting us out til he gets waived. I’m sure we don’t want him going to another AFC West team which could happen on waivers, then we have to deal with him twice a season. Get value for him while there is interest and time but don’t expect too much because time and roster cuts are not with us.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

    Good point

Tampa Bay for example is carrying 4 “NFL Quality” QB’s and will be cutting one of them. Why give up a draft pick when you could pick up a Byron Leftwich or Luke McCown for free

I think Leftwich is cool. The rest of their QBs are Ass clowns.

by KC Fanatic on Aug 27, 2009 10:33 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

    It's a 4th for me

If Sage Rosenfels a much older backup QB can be traded to the Vikes for a fourth rounder, Thigpen can be traded to the Jaguars for a fourth rounder.

However I’d still be content with a 5th as long as we beat Jacksonville’s record this year. The common belief is that we gave up a 5th for Nkudwe and Allenman, and I want to at least compensate with the Thigpen trade

Time is a great teacher... unfortunately it kills all it's pupils.

    I put 3rd round

Just because he might not be an ideal QB for this team, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have value.

It would suck, though, if he landed in Al Davis’s hands down the line and started lighting people up in silver and black.

by jcru on Aug 27, 2009 11:33 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

    In negatives lists...

I would definitely include his stature. Forgive me for sounding like Kevin Kietzman for a moment, butI think that’s actually a key reason behind most of the other things on that list (accuracy, staring-down-receivers, really only effective out of the shotgun). His height greatly limits his vision downfield behind all those linemen. And that’s something you can’t really do anything about short of getting smaller linemen, which is probably an even worse idea.

a majority of those flaws can be fixed with proper coaching. he has an arm, with more practice he can have accuracy. he wouldnt have had to scramble as much if we had a solid line, thats the reason he looked uncomfortable imo. i say give him a chance with proper coaching and this guy will shine.

    Thigpen

Who actually thinks someone would give up a 1st rounder for Thigpen? Heck, even a 4th rounder is pure gold. Thigpen is at best worth a 5th.

And NO ONE needs to worry about Thigpen becoming another Rich Gannon. The two are incomparable. Please stop putting Thigpen up on this pedestal that he doesn’t really deserve.

by hawkrew on Aug 27, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

    Why

Of course you could compare them, but it’s more like an apples/oranges thing. Gannon is NFL starter material. Thigpen is not.

by hawkrew on Aug 27, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh guess what people said the same thing when Gannon started in the league

He was just a Back-up, never be a starter, relied on his legs to much, not very accurate
    Does all that look familiar?
And If you look at Gannon’s stats in his first few years compared to Thigpens last year, Thigpen was better.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Aug 27, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

    No question.

You could even point to his apparent inability to “survey the field.” Doesn’t matter.

But let’s keep in mind, we’re not comparing Thigpen to Grbac or Bono. We’re comparing him to Cassel.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

No the post is about trading Thigpen

I just responded to hawkrew’s post.
And I haven’t heard anyone say Thigpen is better than Cassel. Better Than Croyle, yes but not Cassel.

by bringbacktheglory on Aug 27, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think how good Croyle is will depend totally on how good the line is.

If he gets to stand in the pocket and the scheme protects him from taking a lot of hits, he’s better at the game of darts than even Cassel.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Can't we just all admit we have a serious man crush on Thiggy?

We just don’t wanna make a serious commitment to him, but if we let him go, we know he will make someone else happy and always wish we could have him back :p

Seriously…I do not wanna part ways with him period, but I can see management dealing for a 4th or 5th. And a 4th may be a stretch.

Thigpen would be the starter this year.....

If all the games we lost last year we won because of our shitty defense

So what im saying is If are defense wasnt so bad last year and we won a good amount of the games we lost Thigpen would be the starting QB because he put up some good numbers in yards and in TD’s

by Chiefsallthetimebaby! on Aug 27, 2009 4:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

    No he wouldn't

Unless Carl stayed and Herm was still the coach, maybe. But he does not fit into the scheme Haley wants and Haley is not going to run the spread as a main offensive setup. Thigpen is not good at all in a convential offensive look and he would not be the starter.

    Let it go.

    So you are saying...

If we say we had 6 to 8 wins with Thigpen, he still would not be starting? Come on man, you can’t even believe that.

    Not even reasonable arguement

if your QB had 11 wins you would sit him?

    That's been my thinking, allthetime.

I get to thinking if the D were just a little bit better, that’s all we’d need. I think, though, that some of those games weren’t as close as they appeared, and against the better teams, our offense deserved its share of the blame. Recall, coming off 4-12, Chiefs had a relatively weak schedule and STILL lost almost every game. And they looked miserable on BOTH sides of the ball in quite a few of those games.

I didn’t know if it was Thiggy or the WRs and/or the OL, and I wanted to see better OL and WR before passing judgement on Thiggie. But what I’ve seen in preseason is Thiggy’s mechanics aren’t as good as Cassel or Croyle.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

    Still got the man-love.

Even if it ran counter to good sense, I’d vote to keep Thigpen around, just in case things go to (stay in the) shit, because Thiggy’s the only guy who could survive the season if the o-line remains a disaster.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I mean, if Cassel went down behind a repeat o-line.

Even behind a shitty line, I think Cassel brings significantly more to the passing game.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Couldn't vote. You left out Round 3.5.

Someone above mentioned a conditional pick, and that makes sense. Sounds like there’d already be a deal if it were for a 5th-rounder. I could see a sliding scale from 2nd up to 5th. 2nd seems outrageous, but not if the conditions on which it were predicated were along the lines of “He starts 10 or more games, and wins at least one playoff game.”

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

    A CASE FOR TYLER THIGPEN

    In case you missed it.

(Like the Chiefs will have missed it if they trade this guy away)

D*** you for posting that link.

I was coming to terms with my pre-post-partum depression over Thigpen, and you had to show me that.

A couple of those big completions were badly underthrown balls. Of course, Brett Favre made half his career about throwing it up for grabs downfield to sure-handed receivers.

You see highlights like that and you think these guys were world-beaters, and you forget all the dropped balls, or games in which Darling and/or Bradley disappeared.

The unequivocal fact from watching those highlights is how cool it is to see an offense with the speed of Thigpen and Charles on the field at the same time. I notice that not only does Charles have a pretty high top end, he has great acceleration, too. If he’s even with you, even if you’re at full speed and he’s at dead stop, you prob’ly won’t catch him.

Oh, and on that play fake, I’d give LJ 90% of the credit for selling it.

Again, damn you for posting that link.

    And thank you.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

So a 3rd or Thiggy wears Chiefs Red in some capacity?

    I don’t need Morgan, an 9th LB, a 7th WR, a 3rd TE, a 2nd worthless FB, or some other PROSPECT.
Thiggy will not be the starting QB, and IMO called a QB at all, but could and can play the postition in a pinch and will bring that ‘Blue Collar- Get it done’ thing that Haley wants.
Why would you call the same play to the O and say ‘make it work’ if that was not the mentality.
I can sit on the coach and sometimes call the play – so can the D on the field. EXECUTE it.
Thiggy in his way made plays work or not. Unlike never did work Croyle and G so far!

Well, Steve, you've SEEN all the Gannon comparisons.

It really makes SENSE for Pioli to be shoppin’ Thiggie for a DECENT draft pick. There’s enough spark there, that he can actually carry OUT the threat of not makin’ a deal and just keepin’ Thiggy on the 53-man roster if there are no takers. There ARE things he can do, especially in the red zone, where this pre-Alleman/Ndukwe offense shows every indication of having problems (camp reports and Vikes game).

You can’t say “3rd rounder” with a straight face, right now, but you either get a decent offer, now, or just wait for some QB to get hurt in the regular season, and REALLY have some bargaining power. Some team with a struggling O-Line that starts hemorrhaging QBs is going to value a Thigpen very highly. (And for all we know, that could happen to KC!!!)

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

The 3 positions you named are all concerns of mine.

Still sorting things out at WR, I want to postpone, postpone, postpone. Just keep EVERYbody and PLEASE somebody step up and TAKE the damn job! (like Bowe’s doing) And with the TEs, especially with O’Connell hurt, I’m thinking we might end up carrying 3 TEs who aren’t even signed, yet, and STILL not be sure! Maybe just stick McBride in there to push people around. Sheesh!

I’m a huge fan of the versatile FB, and keep getting these random thoughts of KC with LJ and Battle together in the backfield, taking turns blocking for one another. But in the NFL, RBs avoid lead-blocking like the plague, lest they always be the guy blockin’ while the other guy gets the rock and all the glory (like Barry Word blocking for Christian Okoye – I know – BLASPHEMY!). Cox hasn’t really impressed me, and I really want KC to have that FB dimension.

Anyhoo, I’m just using you as an excuse to voice more opinions. Your case for cuttin’ somewhere else to keep the kid is very strong, Steve. Your medicine heap strong, Chief.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

    A #1 Draft Pick?

How long is a General Manager going to have his job if he gives a first round draft pick for Thigpen? If that guy exists, make the deal NOW!!

by Chief1 on Aug 27, 2009 6:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If Thigpen can knock a half a second off his 40

Al Davis would trade away ten 1st round picks for him. But I wouldn’t feel right sending Thigpen to the Faiders. No, not even for 10 1st round picks.
