Chiefs News from the Overnight 8/27

As a group, they’ve had trouble holding on to the ball. Too often in practice, the receivers are on the ground, whether slipping while making cuts, falling on routes and sometimes diving unnecessarily for passes. It happens so often that yards after the catch will be minimal with this group if it keeps up. During a given practice, there might be one or two passes where quarterback and wide receiver connect on stride and moving down field.

"Right now, I’ve got a job and I’m going out each and every day pushing Matt, helping Matt become a better quarterback and making myself a better quarterback. Every quarterback wants to compete for a job. Whatever situation comes up for me, I’m going to take full advantage of it."

It was inevitable Thigpen would be a central figure in trade talks once the Chiefs traded for Cassel. He jumped into a most difficult spot for the Chiefs in the middle of last season and made the most of the opportunity.

Cassel said the offense ran a screen pass against a safety blitz, and Haley instructed the offense to run the same play. Cassel admitted Wednesday that he was confused by Haley’s order.

“I’m like: ‘They just saw the screen pass,’ ” Cassel said. “We ran it again, so I think it is one of those points of emphasis that you just have to make things happen, and it’s not going to always be perfect in the game. And even if it’s not, we’ve got to try and make this go.”

Walters relishes his time on special teams because he knows he's building a film resume of special teams highlights.

"It's been a lot of hard work," Walters said. "It's been a real stressful time. You want to stand out."

Walters is in the process of transitioning from defensive end to linebacker, which he admits has been rough.

"That's still a work in progress," he said. "It's about me taking it one step at a time."

With a little less than two weeks left in the preseason, most fantasy football leagues are getting ready to hold their drafts. To help, here is my first of weekly articles focusing on the Kansas City Chiefs fantasy players.

Today is my overall outlook for the team, and let me tell you – it’s a loooong way from the highlights of the 2003 season when the Chiefs were fantasy gods!

Kansas City Chiefs 2009 fantasy football outlook from Examiner.com

As competition for college talent intensified, some of the greatest stunts happened behind the scenes.

One night in 1965, legendary Chiefs scout Lloyd Wells talked his way past NFL security guards by posing as a reporter for Ebony Magazine. Once inside the room where Otis Taylor was being "baby sat" until the NFL signed him, Wells sneaked the big-play wide receiver out through a back window and flew him to Kansas City.

In a story by Kansas City Star writer, Randy Covitz, that appeared online Tuesday, he reports that the Pro Football Hall of Fame Seniors Committee have passed over former Chiefs greats Otis Taylor, Johnny Robinson, and Ed Budde for inclusion as finalists for the Class of 2010.

And while quarterback competitions might be fun, how many fans really locked in on the Patriots' long-snapping competition, or the intense battle that just got decided at center for the Packers? What? You weren't aware that Jason Spitz just beat out incumbent Scott Wells and will anchor the middle of the Green Bay's offensive line? It wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that centers don't really exist when it comes to fantasy football, would it?

Why I Don't Like the NFL Preseason from SI

A lot of these guys are trying to avoid having to go back to their hometowns and figuring out what they want to do with the rest of their life. That is why it always makes me laugh when I hear about how much pressure is on guys like Tony Romo or Donovan McNabb. I guess it is a different kind of pressure, but I would think the practice squad running back from last year who has two kids at home and is trying to make the team as the number three running back is under a little more pressure than a unquestioned starting quarterback with a long-term, big-money contract.

I really hope he’s good enough to make the team, or at least the practice squad. He seems like a very humble, hard working guy.
