2010 Draft: Day One Players the Chiefs Should Look At

6010_743331301119_16818785_42369333_1139133_n_medium

It is never too early to start looking ahead to next year's draft, especially if you've been a Kansas City Chiefs fan the past several years.

Now, this year has brought some optimism and a reason for excitement around town with the hiring of general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley, but how big of a turnaround can you honestly expect after going 2-14? Miami's 10-game turnaround is a fluke and cannot be expected for most teams.

In all reality, the Chiefs will win somewhere around six games this year, and be picking in the bottom half of the top 10. With that in mind, here are some players the Chiefs should target that will not only pay dividends immediately and push for starting time as rookies, but can be stars down the road.

Lots of people will say we should get OL in rounds 1 and 2, but I'd argue that the value for the ones we need are found later in the draft. Wrapping top-15 money into our RT and LT I think is unnecessary. Most starting RTs in the league right now have come from later in the draft. I think we can do the same thing. Same goes for most interior linemen, but getting a top-notch OG in the second round I would not be opposed to.

With that said, Here's the 3 players I think we can get the most value out of in the first 3 rounds:

Star-divide

Terrance Cody

Cody is a massive 6'5", 365 lb. nose tackle from Alabama. The nickname "Mount Cody" was given to him at an early age, as even as a freshman in high school he was 6'2" and almost 280 lbs. In fact it was that year that his football coach called Cody's mother and said that her son would be in the NFL in eight years.

Alabama runs a 3-4 defense, so Cody is already used to playing directly over the center, and he could be just the clogger the Chiefs need in the middle of that line.

"He's a beast," said Georgia coach Mark Richt. "No one's blocked him. No one man has blocked him, and I haven't seen many double-teams block him, either. He's a problem, and probably the reason they are so outstanding against the rush. When you talk about guys who can push a pocket back in front of a quarterback, he can do it."

That is a glowing endorsement from an conference arch rival and music to Alabama fans' ears. He is a force to be reckoned with for sure, and could team with Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey, and Alex Magee to form the best, young, defensive line rotation in the NFL.

Cody should be expected to be taken in the first round, if not on size and athletic ability alone.

Dezmon Briscoe

Briscoe is a Texas kid now attending Kansas University. He is a big, imposing wide receiver at 6'3", 210 lbs., and can beat press coverage with ease. He, like Dwayne Bowe, is not a burner down field, but is deceptively fast and can get over the top of coverage when given the chance.

Briscoe displays excellent body control when going up for a reception, able to contort his body which ever way is needed to make the catch. He also does a very good job of timing his jump and high-pointing the ball (pic) much in the same way Larry Fitzgerald does (pic). Last year, he set school records in both receiving yards (1407) and touchdowns (15) for a season.

Briscoe is a junior this season, so it's possible he stays in school for another year, but it is expected that he will enter the draft along with Jr. wide receivers Arrelious Benn and Dez Bryant.

Depending on how he does this year, Briscoe should be available in either the first or second rounds. If he production drops off from last year, and he run's in the mid 4.5's at the combine, look for him in the second round. Getting him there would be a steal.

Anthony McCoy

At 6'5" and 255 lbs., McCoy is a big target to hit. But he's different than Brad Cottam in that he's a much more natural pass catcher, and a great athlete on the field (pics). He came on strong at the end of last year for USC, catching 15 balls for 170 yards in his last four games.

He is also an accomplished in-line blocker, the National Football Post calls him a "coordinated blocker whose hands and feet consistently move in sync."

While it was expected that Cottam would be the starting tight end this year, it appears as though journeyman Sean Ryan is out playing him right now. Even if Cottam winds up starting by season's start, it's not a ringing endorsement for him.

The trading away of Gonzalez left a gaping hole in this offense, and McCoy won't necessarily fill that void, but he sure can help.

i would love to have cody but i am getting tired of drafting first round d-lineman. also i was wondering why 5 players are pictured and you only talk about 3 of them….no KU receivers please (MU fan here)…no if he was a chief i could learn to like him i guess but we already have the possession receiver and think we need a wideout with speed

I know that drafting D linemen in the first inning isn’t very flashy, but Cody could be the best of them yet. At least he’s not from LSU though right!?

Just to nitpick a little

Its TERRENCE Cody, not TERRANCE. But yes i would love to have him, but i highly doubt he would pass the Haley conditioning run. But if he did watch out and give that man 50 extra yards to stop. And yes i think he would make a great addition as the nose tackle in any 3-4, but i would prefer Tank do well at that spot and then draft a O-Linemen or Linebacker next year.

Cry Havoc! And let slip the Chiefs Defense of War!!!

Good Call

Thanks for the correction, that’s my mistake.

haha good call on the conditioning test.. I know he’s really athletic at least, (he can dunk). I’d also love to see Tank flourish in that role and make it so that is no longer a position of need, especially since he played that some in college.

Cody...

would be the biggest NFL player instantly. (Correct me if I’m wrong, I think Jenkins holds the title in NY at 360 now). I’m hoping we land Cody, Berry, Mays. If (I’m not suggesting it, so don’t foam at the mouth) we trade Glenn for a 1st rounder and pick up Cody and Mays our defense could be top 10 come next season. Top 3 if we could manage to get Merriman out of San Diego. (They have a lot of resigning to do come next offseason).

I say we draft best OL available....

It will probably be between OL and WR. We have QB, RB, TE doesnt matter….We have just drafted good and got good additions on D…..I think we are safe there….especially for 1st round talent.

I say 1st round is OL….two second rounders could be WR and either another OL or WR…

If you want a steal from KU....

….Then I vote for Kerry Meier in a mid to late round. All that guy has done is produce when called upon and has proven time and time again to be a major team player. I think he could be a nice reciever in the NFL, possibly bulk up to a small TE (6-3 220) another weapon for the offense, dude is just clutch. The guy has hands, brains and always seems to be where he is supposed to be. Not to mention he played QB for like 2 years before focusing on WR. If you haven’t noticed I am very impressed by this kid.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

Kerry Meier?

No chance in the mid rounds. He is a slowcollege WR. He is a talent in the kansas offense, but wouldn’t cut it at the pro level.

by JasonM on Aug 26, 2009 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I respectfully disagree....

…..and I am by no means a scout or talent evaluator but Kerry has the tools to be a productive NFL player. He may never be a star or even a starter but he has the tools, #1 on that list is being a team player. Look at Jon McGraw, that guy is average at best playing safety but he sure busts his ass on Sp Teams, that is the kind of player Kerry can be and who knows maybe more.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

Maybe the slot WR

I have no problem with any player that can produce.
Thiggy could be a slot WR, alas not even tried.

I love Meier

As a KU student, I know all about him, and love him as a player, and a winner. You are right, all he does is do anything it takes to win the game.

Not only is he the #2 QB, and starting WR, but he’s the back up punter and, I believe place kicker. The kid can do anything. As far as a transfer to the NFL, it probably will all boil down to what 40 time he runs at the combine. Bulking up to TE is a possibility, probably will have a role as an H-back.

Looking to 2010

Is Selvie an OLB?

Thank You Carl Peterson for drafting Dustin Colquitt

by KansasCityShuffle on Aug 26, 2009 1:19 PM CDT reply actions

Not in College

Selvie plays DE right now, but he’s a prime candidate to make a switch to OLB in a 3-4 defense, I think he weighs somewhere around 250 lbs and is very athletic and quick.

If there’s a guy like that, or I know there’s a guy from Troy who is in the same mold, that’s a good value when we pick, I’d be all for picking a great pass-rushing OLB so that he can take over for Vrabel. We shouldn’t have to blitz to get pressure on the QB, and that’s what we’ve been having to do thus far in the preseason.

by KU2010 on Aug 26, 2009 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Selvie...

might fall to the top of the 2nd too. He didn’t produce what he should have last year. He’ll probably move up the draft boards after this season though.

by I_Bleed_Red. on Aug 26, 2009 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

We did this yesterday already...

Hoppefully its a midround 12-18 pick based on a decent season for us. If it is then OT Trent Williams or OT Ciron Black. If its higher Russell Okung is the only choice. Then in the second round guys like OLB Navorro Bowman, ILB Micah Johnson and C Josh MacNeil all worth looks.

by GenericBrand on Aug 26, 2009 1:30 PM CDT reply actions

After the Crabtree thing....

I’m thinking drafting ANY position other than O or D line in the top half of the first round is nuts. “Skill” players are way too risky and expensive to be drafted that high. I think Pioli knows this as well. Seeing as how we will still be in terrible need of offensive line help next year, to me the choice is obvious….BPA OL.

by SoCalChief on Aug 26, 2009 1:34 PM CDT reply actions

Fitz worked out fine

Haley knows all about top flight WR’s, and Fitzgerald worked out just fine for him after being selected #3 overall. Pioli has never drafted a WR in the first couple rounds at New England if my memory serves me right.

by KU2010 on Aug 26, 2009 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...

some WRs are can’t miss prospects like Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson. I don’t really see that guy in this years draft, I’m going to look closer at Benn this year. Maybe we could use one or two of our 2nd rounders to trade for Boldin or Marshall (I know, I know, but Moss turned things around in NE).

by I_Bleed_Red. on Aug 27, 2009 12:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Seriously if they do not address the O-Line for the First 3 rounds

Ill be pissed! Plain and simple. They need to get better on the O-Line. screw D-line of rnow we already got a Player in which they said couold not be blocked with Dorsey. Just be smart and BEEF up the damn O-LINE

SO

another aspect of the NFL.
as is trade possibilities.
We trade Thiggy is there something worth the trade and another aspect of pre-season expectations.
A HAIRBALL I think :)
