On J-Man

I have been reading the comments in J-Man’s posts and I have remained silent on it. However, some of the comments there were so insulting, arrogant, presumptuous and bone-headed that I need to say my piece.

At first I felt bad when J-Man would post and someone would make a comment making fun of his typing. I felt bad for the person making fun of J-Man because in most of those cases, the person was unaware of J-Man’s condition. Well, maybe I didn’t exactly feel bad so much as I took pity on them not knowing about the situation. After reading some of the most recent posts by some folks about J-Man I have realized that ignorance is no longer an excuse.

Some guys mentioned that they didn’t care if J-Man had a debilitating condition and that he should be able to express himself clearly even if it took him more time and effort to do so. I will get to those claims later.

First I want to talk about ignorance. Sometimes being ignorant to something is simply not your fault. Sometimes it is most certainly your fault. Other times, being ignorant to something can be helped when one shows a little discretion. God forbid someone posts a Fan Post that someone else thinks doesn’t belong here. There is always someone who will make a sarcastic comment or to say something mean. Why? What purpose does this serve, other than to humiliate the poster or make them feel bad? If someone makes a mistake or they make a fan post that might be better off as a fan shot, why not just tell them like a civil human being that you are welcoming to the community?

DThomasReigns does it all the time. Being an ass pretty much never does any good. Talking to people with respect and a cool head usually does.

The problem, in my mind, isn’t so much that the people are ignorant to J-Man’s condition when they talk shit in his posts. It is that the people are so willing to be assholes. There is a seriously fine line between teasing and being a dick, especially on the net. There is no sarcasm font. People can’t always tell if you are joking. Whenever I think about giving someone shit on the boards, I always try to make sure they will know I am joking. If there is a question in my mind if they will, I usually don’t post it. Just stop and think. People who are mean for the sake of being mean are acting very small.

There have been a lot of lower quality fan posts as of late. There are a lot of new people on the board. These folks don’t know how things are typically done around here. They are simply trying to contribute. Instead of getting all hot under the collar about it and making an assholic comment why not just be cordial and fill them in on standard procedure. Link them to the welcome manual. Or just shut up until one of the moderators does it for you. The world is not going to end if someone posts a fan post that is not up to your standards. Chris and Joel have done a fantastic job with this blog. They will presumably be able to handle these things without people having bitchy internet showdowns on their blog.

As for the previously mentioned claims that J-Man should buck up and contribute like the rest of us, they are absurd. Here is a little information about Cerebral Palsy.

  • Cerebral palsy may involve muscle stiffness (spasticity), poor muscle tone, uncontrolled movements, and problems with posture, balance, coordination, walking, speech, swallowing, and many other functions.
  • Mental retardation, seizures, breathing problems, learning disabilities, bladder and bowel control problems, skeletal deformities, eating difficulties, dental problems, digestive problems, and hearing and vision problems are often linked to cerebral palsy.
  • The severity of these problems varies widely, from very mild and subtle to very profound.
  • Although the magnitude of the problems may wax and wane over time, the condition does not get worse over time.

Take a hard look at point number two! Forgive me for being presumptuous here J-Man. I do not intend to indicate that I think you have some mental retardation or a learning disability. My goal is to point out that, as someone with CP you COULD. Has anyone here asked J-Man if he has a learning disability to go along with his very fortunate gift of CP?

The mere fact that J-Man MIGHT have this problem makes demanding that his posts be at the same quality as those of us with fully functioning motor and cognitive abilities beyond absurd. It is stupid, small minded and ignorant. For this type of ignorance there is no excuse. Asking someone with a sever motor function disability to type as well as someone without this disability is ridiculous. Did anyone read the word “spasm” up there? It may take J-Man a very long time type out 4 sentences. How dare any of us demand he spend superfluous amounts of time trying to please us! Just to make his posts EASIER for us to read. Are you kidding me?

As for the suggestion that we should “treat J-Man like anyone else,” I would like to point out that J-Man is NOT like everyone else. J-Man has challenges that many of us do not have to deal with thus it is our responsibility, as thinking, feeling, intelligent adults to understand that there are things J-Man is and is not capable of. When an old man with a cane comes on the subway I don’t treat him like everyone else. I get the hell out of my seat and let him sit down. If he was a 20 year old guy in perfect health I would not have gotten up. I’m tired and that kids legs work fine. The old man’s does not. I don’t treat him like everyone else, I treat him with understanding and a modicum of kindness.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone who fails to understand J-Man’s situation has anything worthwhile to add to the discussion on this site. No matter how well they type. I suggest that those people buzz off and find another place to spread their bile. It is not welcome here.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

You're a good man, Paddy.

I’ve been reading this blog for a long, long time. I’ve always been impressed with the knowledge, intelligence, education, honesty, and compassion of its members. I may not always agree with social opinions or political ideas, but who cares? It gives me something to think about and at the end of the day, it’s only about one thing, the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s why I decided to join and contribute.

Last night was disgusting. I was disappointed with what went down, to the point I was contemplating deleting my account. But then, this morning, I find this post, and it made me remember why I joined in the first place. 99% of the people here are solid, good people. The other 1% can go to hell, or buy my bungalow in Oakland. Thank you for that reminder.

In my defense

At first I didn’t know the guy had CP. Yes maybe my comments were a little harsh. But I would say the same thing to anyone, I wasnet making fun of him because he had CP. But soon after I found out and would like to make an apology to Jman and to anyone else that I may have offended. But at the same time I would ask that some people get a little more thick skinned, this is football, and some poking fun and shit talking shouldnt make anyone too mad. Ive had a lot of crap talked about some of my “jackass” comments and I dont get pissed I just laugh at it. So after being banned, I think I’ll be a little more cautious on making “extreme” comments. with all that said, I love AP and go to it 5 to 10 times a day. Im a football fanatic.

by Grand Master A on Aug 24, 2009 10:06 AM CDT reply actions

I think the whole point

Is why be an ass?

There is no reason for it, whether you knew he had CP or not. You don’t have the right to tell anyone not to post because YOU can’t read it. If you cant read it, don’t. You are no one’s authority except for those that are dependent on you.

I’ve also remained silent on J-man’s posts but haven’t been real happy with what’s been going down.

I agree that in general we’ve had a bit of a down-turn in the overall quality of the fanposts as of late. If what you’re writing illicits less than ten comments, your thought would be better served as a comment to someone else’s more thoughtful/meaninful post.

I have an idea

I just joined the Seahawks blog and it said my membership wouldn’t be available for a day. I don’t know if this was an SB Nation glitch or temporary error or if it was a precaution put in place by the guys that run the Seahawks Blog so that new users could look around for a day before they started posting.

If it is the latter I have an idea for AP. Perhaps instead of forbidding people to post for 24 hours, just give them a welcome message that pops up when they join that has links to the guidelines and so forth. This way they could read up straight off the bat and kind of get used to the idea that the site has protocol. What do you think?

Good contoversial topics create good quality posts

Although a lot is happening right now with the Chiefs (and entire NFL) there hasn’t been a lot of controversial subject matter. Most agree the new Chiefs front office is doing a great job so there is little to debate.

Everyone should spend a little time checking some of the other blogs on SB Nation, many blogs get only two or three new posts a week (Conquest Chronicles for one) so perhaps we are all a bit spoiled.

I don’t have a problem with what many would say are “weaker” fan posts. If the topic does not grab my interest I simply don’t continue reading it. I suggest anyone who has a problem with posts like J-man’s do the same. Just remember to rec the ones you do like so they stay on the menu for a while.

My suggestion for improving quality would be to have a few “regular” topics with an assigned thread for the week (or even for the day) Posts like “caption this photo” are fun and regular editorials can be fun too. How many regulars do we have on the AP that think they are better than Jason Whitlock? Let them have a weekly spot and we’ll all take turns firing shots at them.

One last thought; posts on this site do NOT have to be all about X’s and O’s. (as I’ve often heard members claim) I for one enjoy the editorials, opinions, humor, and lifestyle posts that we often see and I think other readers do as well, if you don’t believe me just take a look at the the “most recommended” posts at the top right of this site….I rest my case.

Absolutely true

I think the drop in quality occurs more when we end up with three or four posts on the same topic with nothing of substance to differentiate them. I for one am more than fine with a post on a topic and someone counters the same topic with a post from an opposing point of view. The humor and lifestyle posts are one of the best things about this site. They go miles in terms of building community.

I'd say it depends

when we have posters making a case for one thing or another, a case for the opposing view has a tendency to compartmentalize the overall argument in a really effective way. Otherwise, I agree whole-heartedly.

The people who have been around here long enough to notice diminished quality. Much like with the ganja, its quality not quantity.

During the mock draft session I posted, with minimal effort, a post asking Cleveland fans who they wanted. I got blasted. They were pissed to read yet another “who should we draft” post and they let me know about. They didn’t want some newbie waltzing into their established forum and posting lower quality crap. Thanks Paddy and J-Man

I’m one of those people that make sure I read what J-Man post. Why because he’s disabled? No way Because he is a fan that knows football? Hell Yes! I admit I do not normally post a comment to J-mans post because there is always one ass that can not seem to help himself make an ass of themselves, and what could be a very interesting topic of football comes down to insults and defending.

I once ran a discussion site where insults resulted in a ban, they were told first thing that we welcomed discussion and debate However the point was you could argue your point as long as you did it in such a way as to try to make the other side change their mind. Name calling and profanity will never get to that end result. I’m sure this would not work here, but if everyone that reads this post at least try’s to make a well thought out and reasoned post before just saying what comes off the top of their head, I think even AP can be a better place.

Paddy has come out and said what many of us have been thinking and I Salute you for doing so. I myself have made one fan post, not because I don’t have anything to add, but because I don’t think my thought’s are sometimes good enough for a fan post. We have some very talented people here are AP, and some of the most intelligent fans it has ever been my pleasure to get to know through their post. I would not want to waste anyone’s time with a fan post that I did not think was worthy of the AP readers. I also know if I wait one of the better writers will either make a post I can comment to or I can ask one of them to create a post on the subject.

Just one last thing to an already too long post. We communicate with each other and the world here on AP through text. One of the worse ways to convey a feeling. Jokes die in text form, sarcasm is next to impossible to get through the written language, and worse of all hurt feelings most often don’t even get posted, most of the time the one with the hurt feelings just goes away, and that hurts us all. I guess what I’m trying to say, is to put thought into your text before someone else does it for you.

Also, I completely agree with you on name calling. I don’t mind reading the F word, but if someone is called the F word that’s in a completely different league and it shouldn’t be allowed. Even if someone is “just” called an idiot they should be warned once and then banned IMO. The other day I put in a post that I thought an idea was ridiculous, but that doesn’t mean that the person is an idiot at all. To me that’s where the distinction should be drawn.

Do you know how discouraging this type of comment is to a newcomer? I have made a few posts and to be honest with you, I am not anxious to give it a try again. If we look back at the archives of the first posts from most of the hard core users, I suspect they would not be of very good quality either.

I think maybe newcomers should wait at least a month or more to see how things work before they jump right in. Wait until the season starts and people like the PARADE make great posts and take cues from the way they and others structure their thoughts and back them up. Some people (myself, as one) are still waiting to make that first REAL fanpost until they get a good grasp on things.

You can bring a lot to the table through the comments. As much as I’ve disagreed with UCrawford, he does a good job making his point and backing those points up. He doesn’t need to make a short fanpost to get his points across or to get a discussion going.

All this~

sounds mighty like High School bs to me~

This and that, and they and she and he said, and we should, and this is how~

Who cares~ let it go. If a person talks trash upon anothers opinion, or how they type, or how they express themselves, they prob need to look in the mirror and remind themselves how OLD THEY ACTUALLY ARE!

let the high school bs games go people~ and realize, we all have something to contribute~ even if its not DONE the way it was done in the past on here!
eh?

Yep

Almost everyone who starts posting on here, myself included, ends up comenting on how remarkable they find AP. I used to try to engage with other Chiefs fans on the boards at KC Chiefs.com and it was a nightmare.

Go read the comments to any article there. Watch, as quickly as 4 or 5 posts, guys are bitching at each other.

AP is remarkable in that almost all interaction is cordial and respectful. This is rare on internet message boards. As Buck’O said, it is important that we all stive to make this blog the best it can be or otherwise it will be ruined for all.

All right, I said I would not comment on this again, but

I feel as if a certain portion of this is directed at me (the “treat him like every one else” portion). You state:

“When an old man with a cane comes on the subway I don’t treat him like everyone else. I get the hell out of my seat and let him sit down. If he was a 20-year-old guy in perfect health I would not have gotten up. I’m tired and that kid’s legs work fine. The old man’s does not. I don’t treat him like everyone else; I treat him with understanding and a modicum of kindness.”

I have been friends with a guy who has brain damage (neighbor of my mother) most of my life. If he needs help getting down stairs, do I help him? Of course I do; I was never implying otherwise. But I cannot help anyone’s physical challenges on here. I cannot give up my “Internet seat” on a “virtual subway”.

All I am saying is that if I were j-man, I would get sick of this and WANT to drop the subject and talk some football. There are AOL chat rooms for this type of crap if that is what he wants.

Now, I am NOT speaking for j-man (nor could I). J-man, if I am wrong in my thinking, let me know.

And with that, I AM done with the topic, so understand that, with the exception of j-man himself, I will not respond to any responses to this.

Once, I urinated a whole hotdog.

Given that I do not think J or anyone else wants to be treated any different than anyone else on this forum.

A thought however presented is a thought.
So some present a thought all wrapped up in Bows and fancy Cologne and it sucks.
some are not so fancy but if you really Try to understand the thought presented are new and provoking.
Or, in that light the underlying meaning in Wanting to be part of something, as we all do :)

I appreciate the fact

that J has passion enough to not only come onto a division rival’s blog & start making fanposts, but to not let his condition get the best of him, or keep him from getting the most he can out of life. That’s something we can ALL take a lesson from. I work with lots of kids w’ his & similar conditions, & they inspire me each and every day. So did the piece Babb wrote about Cory May’s father in the Star recently. Call me hokey or whatever, but that’s real effing grit right there. Don’t get me wrong, I have an intense and borderline unhealthy hatred of the broncos, but I enjoyed jman’s contributions and some of the discussions that followed…a pretty interesting wrinkle in our side of the blogosphere I think…..thought provoking if nothing else.

by reedeasy on Aug 25, 2009 12:37 AM CDT reply actions

Dammit, I am commenting yet again when I said I wouldn't, but

THIS is my last comment on the topic (with the exception of comments from j-man himself). And I apologize in advance, j-man, if this is the type of crap you get tired of. It is a nice story, but, if I were you, I would be sick of such things. You may well be a bigger man than I. That being said:

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: “When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet, my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son!”

The audience was stilled by the question. The father continued, “I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped enters the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child.”

Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?”

Shay’s father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give his much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. Shay’s father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around for guidance and a few boys nodded approval, why not? So he took matters into his own hands and said, “We’re losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him to bat in the ninth inning.” Shay struggled over to the team’s bench, put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father’s joy at his son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay’s team scored a few runs but were still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay’s team scored again. Now with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible ‘cause Shay didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing the other team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball softly towards Shay. As it came in, Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over, but the pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, “Shay, run to first! Run to first!” Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, “Run to second, run to second!” Cathching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to second base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman’s head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, “Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way, Shay!” When Shay reached third base, the opposing shortstop ran to help him and turned him in the direction of home and the boys from both teams and those watching were on their feet screaming, “Shay, run home!”

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the her who hit the “grand slam” and won the game for his team.

“That day,” said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world. Shay didn’t make it to another summer and died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy and coming home and seeing his mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!”

“In this world we hear of how cruel man is to his fellow man, but that day on a baseball field proved to me that there is beauty still to be found in the hearts of mankind.”

Hey guys

I’ve been really busy lately getting back into the routine with classes and moving, so I haven’t been able to delve into the innards of this blog as much lately, which is unfortunate. I read posts here all summer and then eventually joined. It always struck me how witty, intelligent, and respectful many of the common posters and commenters are and that still is evident today, so when I wrote each of my very few fanposts and shots, I took tons of time, crafting and editing my work. Over an hour for little pieces, b/ct I wanted to match the quality that I had experienced in my readings.

I know everyone wont be able to write as well as others, and if that is what is taken into account in what many have referred to as the “quality” of the posts, then that’s not right. We are all from different social groups that have specifically defined our lives, but we are all united as Chiefs fans, so we should respect all posts and posters that are respectful and full of integrity, regardless of technical ability.

Patty, I’ve always enjoyed your posts more than anyone’s, and I respect your wit and abilities, so I’m a little concerned with what you consider to be the declining quality of fanposts. I feel like I am a pretty good writer, and can express myself effectively, however, I am now pretty worried that I haven’t been cutting it in you regular guy’s eyes in my posts and comments, which really bothers me, because I know how much time and effort I’ve put into them. I try to be original, but with what I perceive this to be as a booming sports blog, I might have repeated another post and/or comment unknowingly, just because of the sheer volume of fanposts certain days and weeks.

Whatever the issue is with what you all see as the declining quality in posts, I hope you remember that a lot of us do put in a lot of time, but still do not get very many recs or comments in relation to what we post or comment. I want to match the quality and respect that I’ve seen on display by you all and your great examples, so even though I’m young and pretty new to AP, I still have a huge love of everything Chiefs in my heart and I still hold this blog in high esteem.

Just remember, you will alienate and scare people off from participating in this blog, regardless of how good or poor their potential quality of posts or comments may be. I can tell you that if I had seen all of this recent jabber about the declining quality in posts, I probably wouldn’t have joined or ever written anything on here, which in my opinion, shouldn’t happen to anyone, unless they are just horribly ignorant and disrespectful.

Just take it as a testament to the people that post a lot, that a lot of new people are joining daily, and making their first posts and comments daily, after seeing YOUR work.

-Robbie

by Chiefsfan2012 on Aug 28, 2009 1:24 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I think you misunderstood me
There have been a lot of lower quality fan posts as of late.

This is the only thing I said about the quality of Fan Posts. What I was saying was that people were being rude to new posters and that I didn’t think that was right. I was not complaining about the lack of quality of recent fan posts. I was asking others not to jump down someones throat if they make a fan post that would be better off as a fan shot.

What I was mostly talking about was that there have been a lot of Fan Posts that should actually be Fan Shots. Putting a Fan Shot in the Fan Posts downgrades the quality of the Fan Post area. That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the post itself, just its placement.
