I was thoroughly impressed last night with the play of Matt Gutierrez. He came in and made passes that "came out with authority" in the words of Rich Baldinger. On the last drive, which basically amounted to a two min. drill he calmly took the offensive unit downfield to the goal line. Other than the sharp passes, he also demonstrated solid leadership as everyone seemed on the same page and everyone was where they needed to be. We can gripe about the last play of the game but that was simply not Gut's falt. He actually threw that pass very well; only Lelie had a shot at it. It was simply a junk call by Chan Gailey.
He definitely did himself a world of good last night no doubt. Tyler Thigpen, lovable as he may be, is surely now in jeapordy of not making this team. If the front office decides to only carry two QBs then Croyle's tenure might be ending soon as well. Croyle played well last week passing to the starting recievers. Gut had third stringers on the field and still made plays. Overall he posted a pedestrian QB rating of 75, but if Gailey calls a less ludicrous play to end the game, or Lelie had come down where he was instead of getting tossed out of the end zone in mid air, it jumps to 101.
His play last night warrants checking him out it more depth.
PS: +1 for badass facemask (i.e. Vick and Garcia)
