Chiefs Come Up Short to the Vikings on Final Play of the Game

Man...so close! Matt Gutierrez's goal line pass to Ashley Lelie is out of bounds. Kansas City Chiefs lose to the Minnesota Vikings 17 to 13.

Final game stats are here.

Inconsistent but nearly succesful play from the Kansas City Chiefs tonight but like I've always said, I don't take any absolutes away from the second preseason game.

Here are a few thoughts before I get into the game recap tomorrow morning:

  • Matt Cassel impressed me tonight. He looks crisper and just has a more confident look at the QB position than Tyler Thigpen or Brodie Croyle.
  • The offensive line wasn't very good tonight. Vikings S and former Chief Benny Sapp came in on a blitz and forced a Matt Cassel fumble.
  • Jamaal Charles would be a heck of a lot better football player if he didn't fumble the ball so much. That's a killer right there and a repeated mistake most coaches don't tolerate for very long.
  • Dwayne Bowe had another solid game in limited action, catching 3 passes for 37 yards including a 5-yard TD pass from Matt Cassel.
  • Jackie Battle received the most carries out of any Chiefs' running back. The coaching staff definitely has their eye on him.
  • K Ryan Succop was 2/2 on field goals. Did Herm just not know how to pick kickers? Too much pressure perhaps to score all of the points?
  • Jackie Battle and Jamaal Charles split two kick returns. Maurice Leggett had a punt return too.

More on the defense in the game recap tomorrow. Use this as the post game thread for all of your comments.

Who throws the fade in the endzone?

I wish we would’ve pounded it up the middle.

Something to consider though guys. We don’t have a ton of depth, but we have some great players. Once Haley can get all those guys on the field at the same time, for the whole game, its over. This team looked better tonight than it has in the last few years.

I’m excited.

Predictions.
1. Tank Tyler will end up surprising everyone and be the anchor of our line.

VERY hard play to defend against

Even vs what could be considered perfect defense. Unfortunately, its also a very low percentage play and should never be called in a 4th-down situation like that unless you’ve got Peyton Manning under center.

I'm tired

of freaking Brett Favre. On another note, B overall, not so happy with the ending…eh.

-Chiefs- Winning more than 2 games is the first step...good thing the new guys want more than that.

jesus i hated it

All those Mike Mayock and that other guy did was talk about that Viking team like they were already in the superbowl and how bad was the ugly blonde bitch down on teh sideline at interviewing? They showed more of the crowd wearing Favre jerseys than they showed the game. I think they showed Todd Haley two times the whole game.

They were Vikings announcers

It it was a Chiefs telecast, it would have been the oposite. Mike Mayock has forgotten more about football than we will ever know

And so, Craig finds himself leaping from blog to blog, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap, will be the leap home.

they completely missed

2-3 plays while KC was on offense so they could show favre or allen or some fan wearing a #4 jersey…talk about lopsided coverage…they never once spoke about any KC players…always either vikings offense or D…even when KC made a good play

+1

on QB depth. All of the boys looked good tonight. Problem was that the OL couldn’t block half the time. The other half of the time when they were blocking, it was because somebody was holding and we kept getting flagged…

If it wasn't for the pass interference we would have won.

yet this doesn’t excuse Lelie from getting both feet down on the fade. Keep that knee down

by ravenhawk on Aug 21, 2009 10:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

the pass was off

after watching the replay it would have been near impossible to get thet second foot in. he had to reach too far out for the ball

by KCCheeze on Aug 22, 2009 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

On Top of That...

it was impossible for Lelie to get that other foot down. He was pushed by the defender at the point of the catch and that is legal now. It’s open season on WR’s now and they can push the hell out of ‘em. Have to admit though, Lelie is proving he still has good hands. Had it not been for that poop-fuck interfering to put us on the 1-yard line, Lelie makes the TD grab and that’s all she wrote…

Would have been better off w/o the pass interference

First and goal on the one limits the playbook. I would personally rather have the ball on the five or so. Gives you more room to work with the passing game.

Then again, if our line didn’t fucking suck so bad, we could have just ran it in.

The secondary wasn't doing their job

Vikes have a pretty good offensive line. We did put some pressure on Favre a little bit. Tavaris Jackson was a bit more of a problem — moves a lot better. He actually found the open guy (which there were a lot of, for some reason) and got the ball to him consistently, for once. So we had to back off and that opened up the run a little bit.

How bad was that? I remember after Quinten Lawrence made a nice catch on teh last drive it was actually the first time Mike Mayock was going to talk about something other than Brett Favre and the Vikings Pro Bowlers..he goes “Quinten Lawrence…(then a 3 second pause)….Number 59 Jevon Belcher made some nice plays, rookie from Maine.” Effin joke of announcers. I was excited before teh game too cuz Mayock was doing it cuz of how good he did hte combine and the off season- real talk…now I seriously think I hate Mike Mayock.

It’s not like they’ll ever JUST go with 2nd-string lineup in a real game. They appear to be able to rotate the d-line pretty much at will, which was job #1 for Pioli.

Lots to feel good about

I feel good all-around about the boys this season. They’re not championship caliber, but hell they looked somewhere between average and above average, which is a definite improvement over the past few years.

QB play was very encouraging, OL play was iffy but still passable. WRs kinda worry me, lots of drops, some mis-communication, but a lot of raw talent and speed out there. I hope the WR coaches and Haley can bring out the best in those young WRs.

DL play was actually pretty damn good. I did see Tank get shoved around some, but those ends are doing a good job for such an early point in their 3-4 careers.

LB play was iffy too. Even the veterans were out of position a few times, but when they hit, they hit hard.

DB play was pretty good I thought. There were a few slips and the one big play where the FS tried to jump a deep route, fell down, and gave up a long TD.

Overall I’m encouraged.

by Tadpui on Aug 21, 2009 10:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you on most of this...

but I wouldnt’ call the O-Line passable. The O-Line is going to lose us some crucial games in the regular season of Scott doesn’t make some phone calls here in the next few days…

The O-Line deserves an F. They were horrible, ….abhorrent even. The pocket was never solid, QBs were always on the run, and RB getting tackled in backfield.

i agree hands down

imagine if we score that TD and win that game – the confidence of this team is on a completely different level. just terrible play calling and execution. shouldve let matt gutierrez win that game with his arm and not ran on that 3rd down. he deserved 2 shots to win it and they stripped him of one shot and then forced him to throw a fade on a guy like paymah who was playing lock down coverage all game to a receiver like Lelie just because he is tall? fuck that, run crosses – u saw rodney wright was open on the out pattern- lead him let him make a pllay on the ball with his quickness game over we win confidence is up and sets up for a great week of prac- instead now were 0-2 in the pre-season, leaving every Chief fan to think what happened last year is still very much possible of happening again.

If i was Chan Gailey there

I don’t run on 3rd down, everybody watching that game knew we would get stuffed, terrible call…and then the fade? Its like we cant get away from the Herm era. Bottom line is your on the 2 yard line and Gutierrez got us there with his arm, let him win it with his arm but no you take the ball out of his hands and try to run in it again against a great run defense (regardless of whatever strign was in) Leslie Frazier called a great game against the run besides that one run that Larry got like 20 yards. Anyway, all im saying is if we dont run on 3rd down i guarantee Guitierrez throws a TD and we win that game whether it was on that down right there or on 4th. Just makes me mad because aw in right there on teh road against a team like that wouldve done wonders for the confidence of this team. By the way, I love Gutierrez. Hes a Pioli guy, no way he’s getting cut after that performance. Brodie will either get traded or we’re going to have to cut/trade Tyler.

Why not take a page out of Shanahans book.

Play action bootleg. The defense would have bit on that all day. They were playing the run hard.

I thought they played pretty well against a very good team. There are still problems, but i think we might stand a good chance in a lot of games. We almost had this one.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

BUT…..it’s ok Favre will make it all ok. Favre will make the NFL a better place…….. Holy shit. Is one of these guys dating/stalking Favre? Maybe get Favre out of your mouth and you can pronounce our players names correctly!!! With a push from the O-line we would have taken away a win. Period!!

Solid B

Matt Cassel looked good and so did D-Bowe. LJ and the O-line looked a little rough at times but overall the team looked much improved from last week. Also, I think we found a kicker. How many times did his kickoff land in the other teams enzone? The touchdown pass from Cassel to Bowe had me smiling like hell and Cassel looked calm even though he had to run for his life at times and he took some hits. I’m a first time poster but love reading AP. You guys have made the off-season enjoyable. Thanks.

by B-unit on Aug 21, 2009 10:52 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Cassel and Bowe looked good. Thought the WRs as a whole were inconsistent. Saw some good catches from guys you would expect to make plays (i.e. Bradley, Toomer, Bowe) but some bad drops as well. Also, is Engram going to get involved? O-line wasn’t great. Center is a problem. Colin Brown looked solid at RG albeit against the Vikes 3’s so I’d like to him a chance. Richardson held his own. Wasn’t great, wasn’t bad.

The first D was good. I’d like to see more turnovers however I know that’s an overrated stat. Saw some positioning breakdowns which can be easily corrected.

If this team gets a consistent return guy, their special teams will be nasty as the coverage is much better and the kicking game is much better.

Turnovers is SO not an overrated stat

The opportunities you have to score, the more likely you are to put points on the board. The team that wins the turnover battle generally wins the game.

And honestly I cant watch this without the mute on. This Viking color/analyst guy is the most annoying tool ive ever heard on tv. First off...

I hate NFL network. I don’t have a chance to watch the game living here in San Diego except on the NFL network. I am watching the 1st half, plenty happy, KC is up 10-0, looking pretty good, and then NFL network decides to update the score and tell me that KC loses 17-13. What the hell? I purposely didn’t look at the score so I could pretend I was watching the game live, and they shove the score down my throat. Not to mention the announcers are complete freakin idiots. They said that Jared Allen had a tackle…while dressed in his t-shirt on the side line. On another play they said something along the lines of "good coverage there on Dwayne Bowe, and it was friggin Darling. On top of it all they were sucking on the tit of Favre the entire game.

Enough of that. Ok so the 1st team offense looked pretty good, considering the offensive line couldn’t protect Cassel AT ALL. Having Cassel and Bowe together was obviously a good thing. Darling looked decent. Battle looked good. Damn tired of Charles fumbling the ball. If we don’t do something about that o-line we’ll be using all of our QB’s this year, just like last year. The 1st team defense looked pretty good when Favre was in there, but Favre looked awful. Once Jackson came in he actually did pretty well and had our D back on their heels.

I gave the team a C this week, and a D last week. I think overall we looked better. I hope next week I can give the team a B and maybe a W too?

you know what else

even when Favre overthrew his receivers Mayock was STILL saying “that’s ok!” and “he needs to lead his guys past the defenders” quickly blaming Favres bad throws on the receivers when they were damn sure in the right areas. It was clear Favre was a little over-anxious and they never wanted to talk about that and still continued praising him for his throws whether they were caught or not…I mean I couldn’t believe what I was hearing – straight up bologna. Disgusting commentating in all aspects of the game. THe funniest is when they actually praised Jevon Belcher he wasn’t even on the field the offense was on teh field and it was like in teh last minute of the 4th quarter. Here's my take

Cassel throws a pretty accurate ball, even while he’s on the run. He also fairly quick on his feet for a QB and does a fine job of avoiding pressure and extending the play. My concern is that he’s making the decision to take off running too quickly. Instead he should be recognizing where the pressure is coming from and hitting the open hot route underneath. However, as I said earlier, he can make plays on his feet, so its not such a terrible thing.

btw, can he sell a play-fake or what? I’m kinda excited about that. But that won’t work if we can’t get our running game going at all. Which leads me to…

The OLine is piss-poor. I’m not sure what the hell is going on here, but it needs to be fixed. Quickly. They’re showing no push on runs, and with Larry Johnson not being able to make a cut behind the line of scrimmage, our runs go nowhere. On passing downs, they’re porous. Call em OLé, the Matadors, just waving MFers through.

The defense played solid for the most part, minus a few dumbass moves by the secondary. The front seven got some good pressure on Father Time Favre, highli.ghted by Corey Mays putting his hat run through Favre’s chest. Great F’in hit!

Ryan Succup is not so irrelevant. The guy is hitting FGs and sailing kickoffs into the endzone. He’s doing what he’s paid to do, and that’s all we can ask for. Some consistency and an improvement in field position should turn a lot of those losses from last season into wins.

On a smaller note

One more solid game and I think Belcher will have played his way onto the team. I thought he looked good on special teams and with the 2nd string. If Quentin Lawerence would just stop dropping passes I think he could lock down the last receiver spot. Nice reverse in the first half and some good blocking on a few others in the 2nd. At least he’s shown some upside. I’ve yet to see what has Copper running with the starters. He’s like a slower Lawerence without the blocking and KR capabilities.

Ten sacks in a season! For crying out loud that's what I used to average per game using DT in Tecmo Bowl!

if it had been 1s vs 1s for the whole game,

we would have gone through al of our QBs and would have lost badly.

the 1s vs 1s

had the lead at halftime…not sure where your logic is in that…but yes our O line is crap….Cassel had some nice plays on the run

In a real game,

LJ pops a few more big ones, and that great D starts wearing down in the 2nd half.

Be calm. Chiefs are still deciding on the bubble players. I think tonight’s game brought them pretty close to knowing who stays and who goes. I expect there will be some real urgency to win this last preseason game.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

I`m tired its 7am and not suprisingly its another Chiefs loss!!

I just wish the Chiefs would find a way to win games whether its a meaningless preseason game or not(confidence breeds success)
On the plus side Succup looks good,Legget is great, defense looks o.k,Cassel improved and I was impressed with the play calling because it wasn`t repetitive and they tried to mix it up a bit.
With the negatives…hmm….my grandma could claim a rosterspot on the o-line they look awful!! Apart from Bowe I`m not sure who Cassel can rely on to catch a ball because the wr`s look mediocre( I`m hoping Lelie plays more and steps it up because I`m sure Engram and Toomer have gone awol fom this team)
Oh well theres always next week…………

Two weeks ago, we (I) were (was) griping about Bowe's inconsistency.

Some key improvements have been achieved. I think this will be a fun season to watch.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Javarris

had some nice bursts. guy looks like he can be good in open space, shifty, speedy, good hands, and pretty solid phsyically.

Charles is to RB like Bowe was to WR last year.

Guy makes a great catch and run on one play and then brain farts a couple plays later. If that kid could be more consistent, we’d have something pretty special, there.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

i love charles

consistency will come with more playing time, practicing and coaching – cant forget charles really didnt play THAT much last year plus he missed a few games due to injury…but when charles did play last year, he was pretty good and def flashed signs he can be our version of Leon Washington. Its only his 2nd year, kids gonna make mistakes-

This was a fabulous effort IMO, loved the whole game. The strange thing is, the only guy I felt was ‘slacking’ was Derrick Johnson. He missed at least two assignments, The ’young’ens’ are showing him up and that is NOT GOOD.

D+

…this year will be a struggle because of the O-line.

I think it will be very reminiscent of Trent Green’s first year. He had no protection and threw some pretty terrible throws. They will get better and the ultimate result should be better than the Vermeil Chiefs because this team will eventually have a defense.

It will be a fun year, but 6 wins will be an achievement.

Jackson or Monroe...

Hmmm…starting to have second thoughts about Monroe over Jackson. Our O line is not good. It really makes me think about how good they were with Roaf, Shields, etc. We still need a few more drafts to get better.

I think the Chiefs get a B.

Defense looked decent, And have the potential to be downright scary Honestly, I think that the thing that killed us was our Offensive line play. Honestly, I think that other than Waters and Albert, Our line (especially the right side) needs an overhaul. I think that we need to get rid of Richardson, I think that we need to get some real help on the O line, and soon.

Grade F

I give them an F because T.Jax passes for over 200 yards,2 td’s & they ran very well against the 1st unit.Cassel threw better but still fumbles. No excuses about the o-line.If it’s a problem then the geniuses should have already taken care of it.Pre-season or not this smells like last year.Haley is sounding like Herm with his this is good, have to look at tape etc. This team stinks.Top to bottom.
