These teams have absolutely zero shot at the playoffs this season.
Kansas City Chiefs: Totally new coaching staff and a revamped defense, but still a few too many missing pieces. Give Scott Pioli a couple of years and this team will be back in the playoffs every year like it was in the late '90s. They're just not there yet.

Interesting bet a friend told me about...
$100 says you can’t pick 6 teams that will not make the playoffs. Who you got? Here’s my picks.
Chiefs
Rams
Cincinasty
Lions
Browns
Broncos
Aint got a beach and I see no mountains, landlocked loungin' in the City of Fountains.

Cincinnati
That’s the one team on there I would question.
And, possibly, the Chiefs/Broncos but only because the West is terrible.
This is a great idea for a bet.

I'm not putting up money ...
But, I’d go …
Broncos
Raiders
Rams
Seahawks
Lions
Jaguars

Seahawks and Jags have a shot
Seattle is a better team than their 4 wins last year but it’s tough to depend on 34 year old Hasselbeck now.
If the Jags get the running game going, fix the o-line (major injury problems last year), they’ve got a shot.

Maybe.
I just think the Seahawks are going to finish behind the Cardinals and 49ers in the NFC West and the Jaguars are going to come in dead last in the AFC South.

Totally possible
Though I think Seahawks/Jags making the playoffs is more likely than the other four.

I would like to know what "pieces" he thinks we are missing.
Here’s my two cents.
RG
RT
KR/PR
Other than that, I think our roster is looking pretty good. (on paper)

missing pieces
TE
RT
KR/PR
I think Goff will be fine at RG
Tank/Ron will be solid at NT
LB will be MUCH improved

I don't know ...
Cottam looks brilliant on Madden. To the point that, it would seem, they’ve just left Tony Gonzalez on the Chiefs but changed the name and number displayed.
(Not that, you know, that’s any sort of accurate way to judge him …)

I like the Chiefs' LB
Hali, ZT, DJ, Vrabel…
not sure I’d replace any of them
Studebaker, Mays, Belcher, Beisel provide good depth.

You just don't know
I present to you a sample of Power Rankings, the Training Camp Edition from ESPN before last season.
32 (32) Falcons 4-12-0 The roster was gutted — not a bad thing. But it’s going to take time to add enough talent to make this team a serious contender.Really? Hmmm. So curious. Looks like this guy was dead wrong.
10 (9) Browns 10-6-0 Recent injury setbacks for WR Joe Jurevicius (knee), OG Ryan Tucker (hip) and CB Daven Holly (knee) have hit this team hard. But the Browns are deep. (JW)
Deep eh? The Browns got hit with a few injuries and they sank like a stone. Now they are supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league? Really? They don’t look THAT different than they did last season.
5 (5) Jaguars 11-5-0 The Jags’ draft concentrated on pass-rushers who can give Peyton Manning and Tom Brady a harder time. (PK)
Five? Ranked two spots above the Steelers? Very curious. Looks liek these guys based a lot on what happened the year before. And were wrong.
3 (3) Chargers 11-5-0 The Chargers have to make sure the injuries don’t mount because this team enters training camp smelling its first Super Bowl visit in 14 seasons. (BW)
Yeah…not so much. How about 8 wins? In the AFC west.
And finally, one of my favorites…
17 (17) Cardinals 8-8-0 Edgerrin James turns 30 next month, but he’s confident superior conditioning will help him avoid injuries that strike older running backs. (MS)
The Cards. Our very own Todd Haley’s babies. they were 8-8 the year before. They improved by count em’ ONE win last season. They swept a terribly weak division, not unlike the AFC West. They were expected to be decent but were 2nd behind a more talented Seatle team. They were also supposed to get spanked in the playoffs. They didn’t. They actually did a little spanking themselves. And if someoen could have managed to knock Harrison out of bounds on his ridiculous INT TD return at the end of the first half, they would be the defending Super Bowl Champions.
The point here is that nobody knows jack about how this season is going to turn out. No one knew the Dolphins and Falcons, TERRIBLE the year before were going to make the playoffs. No one thought they had added enough pieces to compete. No one thought the Cards would make the playoffs, let alone the SB. No one knew Tom Brady was going to get injured.
In fact, of their top 10 teams in the preseason Power Rankings only 4 made the playoffs. And the Chargers made it by default considering the Pats, led by our new QB, had THREE more wins. Oh yea, the Jets won more games than the Chargers as well and didn’t go to the playoffs.
Much is going to happen in the next few months my friends. Don’t let anyone tell you the Chiefs HAVE NO SHOT at making the playoffs because they could be just as wrong about that as they will be about who will!

great post
NO team has a “zero” chance at making the playoffs
The national media is simply looking at the Chiefs record from last year, and projecting that they will lose a lot of games again this year.
I think they’ve drastically underestimated the changes made on this team, both tangible and intangible, and how different 2009 should be from 2008.
Even so, a team of nearly all rookies came within 7 points of winning at least 9 games last year (or something like that)… don’t you think that, even without all of the veteran upgrades, scheme and coaching changes… this team would have been substantially better this year…. simply based on another year of experience for the youngest core in the NFL?
I’m saying that, with another year of experience AND significant veteran influence, a starting caliber QB, and a much better coach/front office… the Chiefs can’t possibly help but to improve over last year, and probably in a BIG way

Great points... exactly what I was thinking
I love it when prognosticators prognosticate. I love it even more when the season is over and everyone can see just how wrong they were. One thing I can virtually guarantee is that one of the six teams who have no shot WILL, in fact, make the playoffs.
Now hopefully the Chiefs can do what the Royals couldn’t: take advantage of a weak division.

Nice Job
There’s no doubt in my mind that the Chiefs will make the playoffs. Those guys who write this stuff don’t know the Chiefs. Pioli’s interview with Sirius NFL showed that they don’t. The guy interviewing said in passing, “The Chiefs can’t expect to go 8-8 this year.” And I heard Pioli chuckle just slightly as if to say in a singsong voice, “I know something you don’t know.”
We had a lot of talent last year. I think we had the wrong D scheme and unfortunate injuries to our QB’s, which forced us to revamp the O scheme drastically, and we had considerable youth. And somehow we almost won 9 more than we did. C’mon, how hard is it to improve the team enough to win the weak AFC West and make the playoffs or at least slip in as a Wild Card?
I have to (oops!), ahem, get to take my wife on a date tonight to Old Chicago and to see “The Time Traveler’s Wife” but you know where my heart will be…GO Chief’s!!! (I’m wearing my #27 jersey…haha).
The future is ours KC Chiefs fans!!!!!

I have to be honest
i think this cat is dead on. not this year, maybe not next year..but the year after and a whole bunch of years after that, the Lamar Hunt Trophy will be home where it belongs. this team will be scary to play and Arrowhead will be a death sentenence to the rest of the West and any other visiting team.

I'm not saying the Chiefs are a sleeper but....
Based on his own formula on how he determined “sleeper” teams how are we not included?
“Nonplayoff Team in ’08 + infusion of new talent and personnel + stable coaching staff + relatively low-key offseason in regards to media attention + fan base in need of a winner + manageable schedule + skeptics far and wide.”
Nonplayoff team in 08- Check
Infusion of new talent and personel- Check. Plenty of new talent and leadership added.
Stable Coaching Staff- Checkish. Some would say jurys still out on Haley and thats fine he has something to do but Haley has one of the better supporting cast of coaches backing him up.
Relatively low-key offseasonn- Check. Very low key. No one paid attention to us because we had 2 wins last year. Even the manufactured drama around Waters didnt play out in the media.
Fan base in need of a Winner- Check. Duh.
Manageable Schedule- Check. More manageable then it appears.
Skeptics far and wide- Check. Obviously.
