Chiefs Can Scratch Plaxico Burress Off the List
via Photo Source
Not that they ever had him on the list in the first place. Per the New York Times:
Plaxico Burress, the former Giants receiver, pleaded guilty on Thursday morning in his weapons-possession case in a deal with Manhattan prosecutors that will send him to prison for two years.
Wow.
Now, Plaxico was likely never even a consideration in the Kansas City Chiefs search for another wide receiver but if it was, that career door is slammed shut. Nope, he won't become our bad-boy-turned-good-boy ala Randy Moss in New England.
Admit it. You thought about that scenario before.
We scratched Levi Jones from the list of veteran free agents yesterday and today's it's Burress.
So, what other wide receivers can the Chiefs sign? Here are my options:
- Jeff Webb
- Craphonso Thorpe
- Slyvester Morris
Translation: There isn't anyone else (outside of a former Jacksonville Jag...).

Franklin is a Raider
and under contract with them… Until the WR coach smashes him with a chair.

I don't think so
He scored a TD last week vs the Cowboys

He
originally went to Detroit and they cut him (Seriously..Detroit cut him..all I could say was WOW) and then Oakland picked him up. Oakland picked up another weak ass WR. Franklin could have been something but he just doesnt have the work ethic.

Plax was never really great to begin with
A great red zone target sure, but a player that’s been in trouble with the team on a consistent basis isn’t exactly a player I would like to have. No real loss here IMO.

Agreed...
Out of the three wideouts Pittsburgh had, they kept the right two.

Sign this guy!
He’s 40 this year, but still has mad skills.

Plax never that great?
Dude, you are high. In the NFC Championship game against GB, Plax was clowning their secondary. (which is pretty respectable BTW) He was talking smack about how they couldn’t cover him and he was absolutely right. we are not talking about a couple of slouches, Mike McKenzie and Charles Woodson are players and he was killing em.
by Chiefsfan1970 on Aug 20, 2009 10:24 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not saying that he wasn't good
But plax was never considered a top reciever in the league. He broke a 1000 yards 4 times, and only hit double digit TDs Twice.

Our court system is so messed up
Plax and Vick get two years for doing what they did, and that is less than what any of us would have gotten in the same situation.
Donte’ Stallworth pleads guilty to DUI manslaughter and spends less than 30 days in jail?
Just last year there was a guy that got 15 years for DUI manslaughter.
It just makes me sick how things work in this county if you are a so called celebrity.
Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

I know a kid who had a hit and run DUI manslaughter...
and had a MORE lenient sentence (had work release) than Stallworth with no added house arrest.

It's also...
About admitting what you did wrong immediately.
Not defending the actions of the courts, but Stallworth immediately fessed up and cooperated while Plax and Vick dragged the thing out costing plenty of $$.
by Joel Thorman on Aug 20, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stallworth also, for some reason, got leniency because the guy he hit was j-walking....
To me that makes no difference but I guess to the courts it does. To me whether he was J-Walking or not the point was Stallworth wouldve never hit him if he wasnt illegally in his car.

You're missing some major points
I’m no lawyer, but was listening to someone on radio the other day about this issue. I don’t remember all of the points, but the below were key.
1. As Joel mentioned above, Vick lied about what he did for quite some time before coming clean. Stallworth called the police from the scene and fessed up immediately.
2. Vick’s acts were premeditated – he knowingly and willingly did what he did. Stallworth’s was an accident – and the victim himself was actually breaking a law (jaywalking) at the time of the accident.
3. Here’s the big one. What Vick did was a FEDERAL OFFENSE, that crossed state lines and multiple jurisdictions. This was the Federal B.I. that came after Vick. When you’re involved with something that spans multiple states, the penalty gets much worse. Not to mention Federal vs. Local. Stallworth’s crime was a state violation (DUI, manslaughter) and handled mostly at a local level.
Of course we will all agree that taking a human life is worse than taking an animal’s (though both are terrible). But when you break down the offenses to a more granular level, you see that what Vick did – according to our legal system – was much worse.

my apologies
I realize that you’re original post was comparing another guy to Vick, Plax and Stallworth… and I went off on a Stallworth vs. Vick rant.
To your point – this country is rife with selective discipline and unfair punishment. Who you know and how fat your wallet is goes a long way in almost every circumstance – bad or good. Welcome to America.

Times have really changed.
There was a time when athletes good special treatment by police and the courts because of who they are. Now they make an example out of them, and the more famous the harder you are treated.
As bad as what Vick did, I question if it was Jim Bob in Tennessee running a dog fighting ring at the trailer court, would he have spent as long in jail as Vick. same thing goes for Plaxico. He is a moron for carrying a loaded gun and managing to shot himself in the leg, but 2 years seems like a lot. I do not know if this is comparable to the average person in the same situation, but I know in Canada, I think if you accidentally shot someone else you would probably get less than 2 years.
Athletes better be careful away from the field because the days of smiling and having a cop look the other way are over.

Just seems extreme
Yes he could have hurt someone. Yes he hurt himself. Yes he is stupid but I just don’t see how locking him up for two years will do any good.
I’d rather then sent him talk to youngsters about the dangers of guns. He can tell them all about how he nearly killed himself and could have killed someone else. At least that would do some good.

Your are probably right but that would be sending the wrong message
He was apparently sentenced to the letter of the law and to let him off to so “spread the gospel of plax”, there would also be an outcry. I agree though that the law system is messed up. If Donte, Vick, and Plax were all tried in the Court of Common Sence, there is no way that the sentences would be given the way they were. A man died for crying out loud and I don’t know about your country, but idiots driving around piss drunk is a way bigger problem here than people carrying around loaded weapons in the waistband of their sweat pants.
Happiness is a long walk with a putter in your hand.

The minimum sentence for what he did
is 3 years in NY, so technically he got off better than most would have.

That would have gotten him out of prison before training camp started but he turned that down.

I can see the double-edged sword from that deal
with pleading guilty and then having to deal with Goodell, but that was stupid not to take.

Why are you ignoring the discussion regarding Marshall for Croyle?
If I am a Chiefs fan I want to hear about EVERYTHING – including the rumors. It could be possible that you are ignoring just because it is I, JChief, who hath broke the news..

No offense to WPI, but they’ve never broken news before and I don’t expect them to start in the Pioli regime.

Where did they get this one?
If New York is unable to land Marshall, they appear the front runner at the moment to trade for Dwayne Bowe. It’s unclear what the Chiefs will do with Bowe, …
From WPI
Is this some smoke to get people to pay for the entire article? Frontrunner? WTF?
by NJ Chiefs Fan on Aug 20, 2009 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They're just playing off that NY Daily News article
They also said the Chiefs tried to trade Dorsey (calmly forgetting about the $15+ million cap hit…).
My take on the pay-to-read articles? If it were truly news, they wouldn’t be making people pay for it.

That’s insane

Croyle is better than Orton IMO
and Marshall is going to be gone regardless so, might as well get a talented QB out of the deal.

Why not Marvin Harrison?
I’m still surprised we haven’t kicked his tires. Of all of the “talent” that’s been out there, he was the most productive. Worth seeing if his knees can hold up for another year. I guess his own off-the-field incident(s) have kept him away from Arrowhead’s liking, too.

Joe Horn
2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp
