Chiefs News from the Overnight 8/20

via Kansas City Star

Slim pickings today, but I saw this photo and thought it caption worthy. One practice today, and from numerous reports it is supposed to be closed to the press and public.

Really the only comments from camp that have caused any type of commotion have come from Haley himself. As a first-time head coach, Haley has been careful with his words, going all the way to his opening press conference in February. Since then, he’s grown far more comfortable talking with the media and has displayed a sense of humor and a self-depreciating outlook that make the daily sessions a bit less stiff.

A Quiet Camp … Thursday Cup O’Chiefs from Bob Gretz

For now, the Chiefs are turning to fourth-year linebacker Corey Mays. He’s the stand-in, and the 25-year-old journeyman has a chance to steal the starring role from Thomas. Mays hasn’t missed a practice, and Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that the former New England and Cincinnati player has "gotten a little bit better every day."

As Zach Thomas continues to recover from an injury, Corey Mays is making most of his chance from KC Star

"It had nothing to do with my feelings towards anybody. (Cassel is) working hard. He’s into it. He cares about it. This is training camp. We’re trying to evaluate a lot of guys, a lot of different receivers, running backs, tight ends, line, the whole deal."

KC Star Photo Gallery: Chiefs prepare on Wednesday for Vikings game

"Everything is so damn doom and gloom with the Kansas City Chiefs! So everybody, myself included, can just calm down a little... Matt Cassel is the starter and the team is world's better than a year ago."

From KC Confidential

Not sure it will matter this season, but the Chiefs have one advantage over their AFC West competitors: they will have less travel time than the Chargers, Raiders and Broncos.

This year, the Chiefs will travel 16,896 miles, which ranks 18th this season in most miles to reach 10 road games.

We could have won if we’d scored more points. Geez.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Nick Athan of WPI reports Chiefs Broncos trade could happen

Get this.. lol

Brodie and one of our #2s for Marshall.

say what?

I’d trade Croyle and ONE 2nd rounder for him. Sure.

Not both though.

D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.

by Patrick Allen on Aug 20, 2009 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude.

Pioli, pull the trigger. Pull the friggin’ trigger.

I said a few weeks back that, with Thiggy and the Guit, the Chiefs could stand to lose Brodie and that Brodie would actually be decent QB with a team — specifically like Denver — that had a decent line in front of him to protect him and keep him upright. (Though, I have to admit, I will feel bad for Brodie when he gets Pollard’d.)

There’s no downside to this deal for Kansas City. Marshall is a great offensive weapon (undoubtedly one of the best Denver still has) and, since we’re harboring the Donkeys’ locker room cancers that’ve been cast off because of contract issues anyway, there’s no harm bringing him in to give him a shot.

(Of course, I’m not putting any faith at all in Nick Athan’s accuracy, but it’d be a helluva deal.)

No way the Broncos are going to trade their franchise WR

to the chiefs for a qb that has never even thrown two td’s in agame..

by CALIFAN1986 on Aug 20, 2009 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Waitasecond.

Three months ago, I would’ve agreed with you. But now … ?

We are talking about the team that traded away their franchise QB for a guy whose claim to fame is his neckbeard. Glass or not, Brodie is a big upgrade over Orton. We are also talking about a team that gave up their first round pick next season (and, let’s be honest, that’s going to be a top 5 pick) for an undersized Corner.

So, in that regard, the Donkeys are proving to be a team that’ll do the stupid crap other teams wouldn’t ever think of doing. It’s just a question of whether or not they’re actually thinking about doing this particular stupid crap.

(And, just so you know, there are sources in Denver that have seen the Croyle’s talking with a real estate agent about buying Cutler’s old mansion. Just sayin’.)

by JacinB on Aug 20, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Not Just Donks...

Washington + Denver = reckless abandonment

Both of these organizations have become pernicious. A lot of jackasses still predict the Foreskins to go deep into the playoffs. Some, like retarded Bill WIlliamson, are saying Denver’s players have bought in and are apt to have a .500 season. I don’t get it? What the hell do they see that I don’t?

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

For some reason this rumor scares me.

This sounds like one of those trades that could end up being a dissaster for either one of the teams. What about Thiggy and a 2?

My guess?

Because Thiggy is decent, had great numbers last year, can improvise, can scramble, and puts points on the board … and Croyle is glass.

I don't know

I think we’ve already seen Thiggy for what he is. With his inaccuracy, I don’t think his ceiling is much higher. On the other hand, if (BIG IF) Brodie was able to stay healthy behind decent protection and an offense where he isn’t a sitting duck, his ceiling could be quite high.

Let's be honest, though.

If Croyle’s in Denver, all our defense would have to do is have Pollard look at him funny and Croyle would go out for the season with an knee injury and separated shoulder.

by JacinB on Aug 20, 2009 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I am not too into the idea of trading a guy with a rocket launcher of an arm to a div. rival.

Brandon Marshall is awesome but, I don’t like him as a locker room/character guy. I would just as soon stand pat with our guys. Bowe, toomer, Engram, Lelie, and Bradley sounds like a pretty good receiving corp to me. With good play from cassel and getting our running game going and our offense should be in VERY good shape.

The part where you said all those #3 at best receivers except Bowe

and the fact the Croyle’s rocket arm somehow makes him a threat to the Chiefs or any other team for that matter given what he’s proven so far. But the funniest part was when you would pass on the opportunity to trade CROYLE for Marshall!!

by JChief on Aug 20, 2009 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I know what your'e saying Jchief but...

Croyle is a better qb than Orton and he DOES have a freakin rocket launcher of an arm. The hit he took last year at NE would have been enough to end the season for most NFL QBs so, we still don’t really know if Croyle is any good or not. Denver has a pretty good O-line and could offer Croyle pretty good protection thus making him a VERY dangerous QB.

That being said, the more I think about the trade of Croyle and a second, the more it sounds good. I think Marshall is a douchebag but, he is one helluva receiver. With us having Cassel as our starter, I could feel pretty good about having Bowe and Marshall on the field at the same time. D-coordinators wouldn’t know what to do. There is no way you can stop a passing attack like that. All we need now is some O-line help.

Not as lopsided as you think

This trade wouldn’t be all that different Than Cassel and Vrabel for a 2. The forthcoming contract drove the price down. Marshal’s character issues combined with the cost of his contract extension makes this seem like a reasonable trade.

How is this not completely different from the Cassel trade?

by JComp11 on Aug 20, 2009 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Similar based on the fact that

in both cases the perceived price is driven down by circumstances. With Cassel it was money. With Marshal it is money AND character.

by dakotadave on Aug 20, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I got ya.

Realistically there was not much of a chance that Cassel stayed in NE. Marshal could straighten his shit out tomorrow and be fine. Plus he’s a key to their offense so the price will remain high.

by JComp11 on Aug 20, 2009 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Athan is reporting.

Which means it’s just wild-ass speculation.

Though, there are a few Denver boards that are absolutely lit up about it, apparently. Here are a few choice quotes from the messageboards at OrangeMane

“Has to be a false story. That or McDaniels is really a Belichick assassin sent in to destroy the one team that always gave him trouble.”

McD would die in that scenario

It’s like McD is on a personal vendatta to thoroughly destroy the team we love….. every move of his has been just mind blowing….. wow…..

nothing would surprise me at this point. The engine already blew up, might as well sink this ****er

This would probably be enough for me to tender my resignation as a fan…

Someone shoot me

How ‘bout “No ****ing way”!!! I’ve been cautiously optimistic about this new regime but if this goes down as rumored, I just may wind up w/ the anti-McDaniels crowd.

But just to play devil’s advocate, why not? Croyle has a strong arm…™

As much as I love the Corey Mays story I have to think that it’ll be nearly impossible for him to replace Thomas. We’ve already heard about Thomas being a leader of the defense. His presence on the field will be extremely important for the development of the young guys especially as they’re learning assignments and how to read the offense.

by JComp11 on Aug 20, 2009 9:56 AM CDT reply actions

But, even keeping both ...

I still think we’ll only see Thomas healthy and on the field for 6 games. I hope he proves me wrong, but I just get the feeling he’s at the end of it and his injuries are going to get the better of him this year.

by JacinB on Aug 20, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

It’ll be great to have someone like Mays, if he keeps it up, to rotate with Thomas and should help keep him healthy. Doubt he will just take the job, though.

by JComp11 on Aug 20, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

the idea is...

that Mays plays some this year, when Thomas is not on the field, and grows into his replacement next year after ZT retires.

that’d be a great scenario

I agree 100% with that, but he’s not going to “steal the starring role” from Thomas this year unless Thomas is out with injuries during the season. He means too much to the team in leadership.

What is the deal with all the Croyle rumors lately?

This is just a thought but Pioli might really be the genius people thought. Pioli tells Haley too make Croyle look the best he can. This explains why Croyle had so many starters on the 2nd team with him against the Texans.
Haley has always been up on Cassel then that one interview he wouldn’t say anything? Other teams are now hearing that Croyle has looked good and could beat out Cassel for the starter, now Croyle’s stock is way up and now Pioli has very good trade bait.
This is just my thoughts but if Pioli did put this all in motion all I could say is WOW he is the man!

I wouldn’t want to give up both seconds, although the idea of Bowe and Marshall on the field together makes me question myself.

The idea of Bowe and Marshall on the field together.

Makes every Defensive coordinator in the AFC wet themselves.

From what I can tell, the deal initially (supposedly) was Croyle for Marshall straight-up. Then it became Croyle and a 2nd rounder. I haven’t heard or seen anything about having to toss in our other 2nd (from ATL) or give up a second and a 5th for him.

by JacinB on Aug 20, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

the plan was never to give both 2nds allegedly.. it was Croyle and a 2nd rd pick

I've

always been big on Brodie. He has the arm of top players as far as arm strength. Accuracy gets better with experience and hes still pretty young. He’s injury prone but at the same time, last years hit was pretty harsh. Cant do much about that no matter how ‘tough’ you are. I would hate to see Brodie go to Denver and light it up. All we need is another QB with a cannon in Denver.

On the flip side, he could go in and tear another ACL and we’d have gotten Marshall minus a 2nd rounder. Idk though. We’d all feel pretty stupid if we make this trade and Croyle turns into a Franchise QB.

by Petey14 on Aug 20, 2009 6:09 PM CDT reply actions

that's a risk the Chiefs would be willing to take

on the OUTSIDE chance that Croyle becomes a franchise QB… they wouldn’t lose much sleep over it if they got Marshall opposite Bowe, and Cassel plays well

"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"

by stagdsp on Aug 20, 2009 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Its a risk worth noting.

Croyle was a potential late 1st to mid 2nd round pick but his durability issues dropped him to 3rd. His arm strength is definately top tier, and decision making isnt TOO bad for a young guy. Things like that and accuracy get better with experience.

Denver has a pretty good OL. Cutler was among the least sacked QB’s last year (may have been THE least sacked QB) Croyle with protection has more potential than Orton and THAT is why I say no. Marshall is a #1 receiver and neither him nor Bowe will want to be anything other than #1. We dont NEED two top talent WR’s to be a great team. We need 1 great WR, 1 solid WR, and a 3rd contributer. Its not like we need two WR’s with 1200 yards a piece.

Besides, theres no point in having great WR’s if we dont have an OL to protect the QB.

Marshall has had a history of problems and even though he is still under contract, he is not even making the effort to play with the team in case hes not traded. He admitted hes not even close to knowing the playbook To compare, Anquan Boldin said he would FINISH his contract with AZ but wanted out because they failed to give him a much deserved extension.

My point is, a disgruntled player is still under contract needs to do his job regardless of if hes going to be traded or not. If I want a raise at work and they dont give it to me, I cant just start slacking off and requesting a transfer to another department. Whether I want to be sent to another department or not, I still have to do my job, and do it well.

by Petey14 on Aug 20, 2009 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

To be clear

I’m not saying we shouldnt have 2 1200 yard WR’s. I’m just saying I dont think we need to make a trade to get a #1 WR just to get 1200 yards out of a 2nd receiver. If the line can step up and protect Cassel, the yards will come. We dont have to have a Larry Fitz/Anquan Boldin like tandem at WR. Why not something like Moss and Welker? Ward and Holmes?

Bradley is a 2nd round choice. Typically, WR’s break out in their 3rd or 4th year, especially outside the 1st round. Bradley got big headed in Chicago and was cut and that really broke him down. Last year, he arrived late, got dinged up, and never got to fully show his capabilities. What if we have a true #2 in Bradley and we just dont know it yet?

by Petey14 on Aug 20, 2009 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah I don't think a Denver trade wil happen.

And I agree we don’t need the problems he would bring to the team. but I do think a trade could happen with another team.
