Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Sets Assist High In Easy Win Over Sacramento

When I was in River Falls, I asked five veteran players about Haley, and whether the team had bought into what he was selling.

Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters said he'd have to wait to make a judgment on whether Haley was doing the right things. Larry Johnson was OK with Haley's aggressive, physical practices. Bobby Engram has bought in. Matt Cassel has bought in. Bernard Pollard has bought in.

So...

Out of three guys who went 2-14, 1 is “wait and see”, 1 is “ok”, and the other has “bought in”. the two outsiders, they’ve “bought in”. yeah, give me some more outsiders.

speaking of Favre

did anyone see the 30 second clip of Favre at practice today on SportsCenter? It showed him drop back and throw 3 passes…..all incomplete. LOL

That's a bit extreme, Craig.

A 2-year contract, though. 25 million bucks. It’s a lot about the money. Dorsey is with the #1s this week. I don’t hope Favre gets killed, but I hope the Chiefs give him 2nd, 3rd and 4th thoughts about his decision.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Man I realy hope you are just joking...

If not that is a real asshole comment. Dude dont even joke about additions, or family deaths. PERIOD. Not a funny thing at all, and wishing death upon someone is a really bad idea. Things can turn around on you in a hurry. God forbid someone close to you dies and then another person becomes addicted to something. Pretty much an all around HORRIBLE COMMENT

So...

Tell me Mr. Waters… if Club Herm garnered 6 wins in two years, can’t you only go up from here?

Aren’t coaches pretty much one or the other?

Brian Waters made an ill advised trip to Kansas City

last spring from his home in Dallas to give Haley and Pioli a piece of his mind. He was rebuffed and it left a sour taste in his mouth. Well, Brian was wrong. He better get off the fence and buy into the team thinking or he will be history.

by G.L. on Aug 18, 2009 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

Peter King Interviewed Brian Waters 2 weeks ago with that comment.

I too would have the same attitude when I had missed two practices out of the first 2 weeks of training camp(not including missing almost all of the OTA’s). This wasn’t even a comment after the first preseason game. He hasn’t had time to formulate an opinion.

“Ian, this is my belief: When a team stinks, as the Chiefs do, and a coach with a pretty good track record comes in, the only way you can judge the coach is if you get in the boat with him, row hard, and see where the sea takes you. Like him or not, the Chiefs have a smart coach who is an equal-opportunity abuser. I heard it in the two practices I watched. Haley got after Cassel and Pollard, and a free-agent wide receiver four months removed from a college campus. For players to judge him correctly, Haley has to have a chance to do things his way.”

by ravenhawk on Aug 18, 2009 5:14 PM CDT reply actions

That puts a new spin on it, ravenhawk.

I had the impression Waters non-opinion was from King’s latest visit. But regardless, I’m with Waters, just waiting to see how things pan out. I think King’s in that same mode, too. I’m not too keen on the impression of “abuse” from the coach. I think you can be forthright and truthful without being abusive, even if the guy on the receiving end thinks he’s being picked on. There’s a fine line, there, that it sounds like Haley’s on the wrong side of.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Aug 18, 2009 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

The fine line is crossed... when someone ends up with a fractured jaw.

just saying…

Water could have taken the 22 guys from the street a few different ways. One Cry like a baby or man up and grow a thicker skin. If Haley wants to see 22 guys from the street… I’ll show him 22 guys from the street with me plowing over them at the LG position.

by ravenhawk on Aug 18, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Since then, Waters has voluntarily led a running drill. So far, it looks like he’s bought in as well.

He'll always handle himself like a man.

by hmills110 on Aug 18, 2009 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, he sure didn’t the day he barged into the offices and demanded a meeting. Nor did he when he went crying to Whitlock about it. But hopefully, he’s learned his lesson and will now be one of Haley’s soldiers.

by dablueguy on Aug 18, 2009 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I had this debate

on a post that I made a couple days ago.

No matter what message Haley wanted to get across to Waters, I think it was a bit over the line to say he could have brought 22 guys off the street and won more than 2 games.

Not only is it disrespectful, its insulting. Haley Insulted Waters and every player on the team who busted their ass last year. Some guys didnt work so hard, but that doesnt mean you can discredit the hard workers. Tamba Hali is the perfect example of a hard worker. I wish all of our players were as hard working as Hali.

I’m not saying that Haley isnt doing a good job. I think hes doing excellent. I think everything he has done has been for the better, but he crossed the line by saying what he said to Waters, IMO.

by Petey14 on Aug 18, 2009 5:45 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think the "22" guys comment is a bit over the line...

What is over the line is your comment about the players “busting their ass last year.”

by chicks_love_chiefs on Aug 18, 2009 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

So what do you call it?

When guys like Tamba Hali are literally crying in the locker room after losing so many games? Guys who actually DID work and bust their ass. Tamba has always been a workhorse, but unfortunately it hasnt translated into production.

Go back and read what I said.

“Haley Insulted Waters and every player on the team WHO busted their ass last year. Some guys DIDNT work so hard, but that doesnt mean you can discredit the hard workers”

It’s a team game. If youre going to disrespect someone on the team, disrespect someone who didnt work hard.

by KC Fanatic on Aug 18, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

The only reason

I got pissed off about your comment is because first off, you were saying that I brought it up because we lost on Saturday. I clearly stated in my comment that I had the arguement with someone else and wanted to get more opinions on it. I also said in the post that I liked Haley, yet I was “Haley Bashing” because I took Brian Waters side on it.

Bad communication, bad timing, whatever the case may be, the words didnt need to be said.

by Petey14 on Aug 18, 2009 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Nothing Haley/Pioli did was wrong in that case. Waters was wrong for thinking he had free run of the place and unlimited access during a busy time of year. Haley wasn’t insultuing Waters, he was rightfully insulting Herm with that comment.

by dablueguy on Aug 18, 2009 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions

You might be right, Petey.

It’s one thing to be tough. It’s another to vent your spleen at someone else’s expense.

BUT the proof will be in the pudding. So far, Haley’s impressed me with his smarts, and I bet he knows how to manage the psychology of the situation.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Aug 18, 2009 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Having said that, +1 to chicks_love_chiefs about bustin' ass.

But keep in mind that Waters DID come in for OTAs the year before, bustin’ ass, when, by rights, he could’ve been on the beach in the Bahamas, and it led to nada.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Aug 18, 2009 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...more of a diss to the

Edwards regime, I’m sure the players got away with what they could…much like most of us in the real world, at least at work.

by chicks_love_chiefs on Aug 18, 2009 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Nobody

would be saying this if Waters actually did walk and we had a gaping hole at LG. Haley had JUST started as HC. It hadnt even been a month yet. Hell, I’m not sure it had even been a week yet. People would have been furious. Maybe we would have brought in a replacement but I dont know if there were any quality LG’s available.

I’m not bashing Haley. I love what Haley has done with the team. But that meeting with Brian Waters has him pissed off. Apparently hes still not over it. Something tells me that more words were exchanged that what we know. Waters has ALWAYS been a Pro’s Pro. Sure he spoke out after a couple of bad losses but its an emotional game and he’s not the first player to do so. After years of being a leader, he gets pissed off about a conversation with Haley. SOMETHING set him off. If Haley would have made his point without insulting the guy, MAYBE..just maybe..Waters would be on board 100%

I “beat this horse to death” on this issue. But I’m tired of hearing “dead horse” comments because it seems like people throw that around alot on here. Thats the first time I’ve been told that. I really dont get it. Its a topic of debate. So debate it and if you dont want to talk about it, don’t comment. If you dont want to read about it, skip over it.

All I’m saying is I’d rather have a happy Brian Waters that wants to be here instead of a skeptical Brian Waters who doesnt want to be here. Haley could have gotten his point across without going down the road that he did.

by Petey14 on Aug 18, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

BTW

But the malcontent bit is a reach. What ravenhawk said about it being 2 weeks ago rings true.

There was a comment by Waters similar to that from the previous King interview, and, at the time, it was pretty much in line with a guy who was seeing his first couple days in camp spent on the “failed his conditioning” part of the field, with only a 2- or 3-day minicamp by which to judge Haley. At that point, and even to this day, Waters really doesn’t know what it’ll be like to play for Haley when boot camp’s over, or if it’ll bear fruit. A few post-victory pats on the back, and these two guys will be FINE.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

by hmills110 on Aug 18, 2009 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

i love the email that spawned this comment
From Ian of Overland Park, Kan.: “I haven’t really been hearing anything positive out of Chiefs camp about the players’ reaction to Todd Haley. From what you’ve seen or heard, is Haley’s Parcells-ish style turning off some players? More importantly, is it hard for NFL vets to take the demands of a coach like Haley, who has never played high-level football?’’
