Chiefs TE Watch: Ryan Passes Cottam in Latest Unofficial Depth Chart
There are a few changes with the newly released unofficial depth chart. The NFL mandates a depth chart report which is the only reason the Chiefs would provide it (thus the "unofficial" designation).
Here is the page where you can download a PDF of the upcoming game preview (depth chart is on page 16.
Here are the three changes made:
Wide Receiver
- A necessary change. Ashley Lelie has replaced Jeff Webb as the #5 receiver.
Tight End
- Sean Ryan takes the #1 spot from Brad Cottam. Jake O'Connell and Tom Crabtree round it out again.
Long snapper
- The Chiefs released Tanner Purdum last week. Thomas Gafford takes his spot.
WR and LS were necessary moves because of lost personnel.
Cottam had one reception for one yard and one touchdown. Ryan didn't catch any passes including a third down drop near the sidelines in Saturday's loss to the Texans.
Ryan over Cottam...what do you think?

preseason...
again, I think the depth chart will change a lot before the season starts.
My guess is that Cottam will be the guy, but they are giving Ryan every chance to win the job

With you 100% — I think this depth chart is as meaningless as the last one. I’m sure that the depth chart when the season starts, the depth chart will look alot different…
I didn’t watch the whole game focused on blocking, but I suspect Sean Ryan was in better blocking positions and doing what coaches wanted. Yes, he dropped a pass, but he’s built up a reputation of working hard during camp.
Cottam has had some less than stellar reviews, as discussed below. So, I suspect that this depth chart is a signal to him to put a bit more heart into his performance…
Always hard to know the motivation of an evil mastermind like Haley! ;)
You are what your record says you are!
I think these depth charts mean nothing and if the coaches didnt have to fill them out they wouldnt.
Cottom was clearly better then Ryan on Saturday. Actually Ryan was pretty mediocre from what I saw.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
Yea...
That is what makes me think this is pretty arbitrary to them at this point…Just putting players in a position to see how they play….
got to remember...
were not going to be going to the TE all that much anymore

Thats not what the TE's say that Haley is saying.
At this point it would be smart to gameplan for it because everyone seems to think Haley doesnt use TEs because of his past offenses and the fact we got rid of TG.

maybe same with bowe
cottam might not be “showing up” on every play
i think in the end he’ll be 1st teamer, but he needs to get a fire lit under his ass.
i like ryan a lot…but you GOTTA FUCKING CATCH ON THOSE 3RD DOWNS! he’s a mean blocker though… could he switch to FB?

blocking ability?
Maybe he is doing better line work which is paramount since we have no NFL caliber RTs. It could also be that he just wants to see him have time with the first team
why?

Well, because moves like this seem stupid.
But damn, Ryan looked TERRIBLE on Saturday and Cottam was clearly the better of the two. Ryan dropped a 3rd down catch that he NEEDED to make and Cottam caught a touchdown. Also the fact that he started Terrence freakin Copper and Devard Darling over D-Bowe and Mark Bradley and heSTILL hasn’t changed the depth chart even after a stellar performance by Bowe and Bradley.
Also, the fact that they haven’t brought in a RT from free agency is a major cause for concern. Seriously, it is obvious that D-Mac nor Richardson are going to be able to do the job and they need to address that situation now so the O-line can have some time to gel together.

agreed to an extent
but i think it comes back to who is doing it they way they want. i would rather take average player giving 1000% every second than uber-talented guy that takes plays off.
i’d say by game 3 of preseason this will take care of itself. they know RT is fucked and they know cassel and bowe need the ‘real game’ reps. it will happen.
Copper and Bradley i’d say are about even. Obviously Bowe kicked ass and is poised to have that 1500 yard season we all want.
my feeling is the OL is the biggest cause for concern on the whole squad…. anyone have insights on what RT’s are out there to give these guys a kick in the ass?? we need RB holes and MC protection in a major major way….

not that much separation
between these guys really. there’s bowe then the vet player-coaches in engram/toomer and then everyone else (that has mgt scrambling for more options).
i hope one of these guys can step up and make some noise and make opp pay for double teaming 82 (80??)

It's a depth chart
for the 2nd preseason game of an entirely “new look” Chiefs. It doesn’t mean dick, especially considering the only reason it exists is because the NFL tells them to put one out for the media’s sake.
We’ll see a lot of movement on the charts and in the game for now just because they’re keeping things fluid and trying out everyone everywhere. There’s a LOT of evaluation that has to happen and very little time to do it in, the best way to do so is by mixing things up every chance they get to see how the guys react. Never know when you’re gonna find some UDFA or 7th rounder that turns out to be a stud that slipped under everyone’s radar until you test everybody out and see what they can do.
Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...
It's just motivation
I think we all know who will be the starters. He’s just trying to motivate them and show them that they need to keep improving. Being a starter is a matter of pride, I’m sure. It’s about the only thing he can use to keep them working hard. Don’t worry, we won’t start the season with a bunch of scrubs starting.
I do agree on the RT thing though. D-Mac and Richardson aren’t going to cut it, Brown seems more suited to RG, and it looks like Herb is a career backup LT. I’m sure that they see this and will bring in someone if the next game goes the same way. I’d kind of like to see what Runyan’s got left.

Ryan....
has alot more experience and was with Haley in Dallas so he know what he wants to do with the offense and plus were not going to be throwing to the TE that much anymore so im pulling for Ryan

Don't understand the promotion...
I thought Ryan played a horrendous opening quarter for the Chiefs. His blocking was atrocious and of course, he dropped the only pass thrown to him all game, a potential third-down conversion created by Cassel.
I don’t understand this at all. I thought Ryan’s performance would put him on the chopping block.
But that’s why Pioli and Haley work at 1 Arrowhead, and I sit at a laptop in my underwear.
Less than 2 weeks
til we have to cut 5 guys off the roster. I’d bet Haley is using that as a pretty strong motivator and seeing how guys like Ryan and Taurus Johnson respond. No sense in cutting a guy because his first preseason game with the team didn’t go well. We’ve got the time to test them out in another game situation, why not do it and see what happens?
Worst case scenario: Ryan continues to drop passes and he gets cut between now and Sept 1. If he gets his head on right and does what Haley and Gailey ask of him, then we move on from there.
Bask in the glory that is Kwame Harris. Poor Alex...
Haley is being consistent
For the very same types of reasons that Bowe is not first string. Things like this at practice today:
Cottam didn’t hustle back to the huddle as fast as Haley would have liked. "Quit feeling sorry for yourself and run back to the huddle, and make the next play!" Haley hollered. (UW-RF)If Cottam and Bowe want to be first string, they will have to hustle and do every thing else the way that Haley wants them done. Same goes for everyone.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
+100
Exactly the quote i was thinking of. It is frustrating to have such highly talented dudes not working with 1000% heart (RUDY! RUDY! RUDY!)
This will get straightened out by game 3 and we’ll be ready to roll in Baltimore!

I thought Cottam was known more for his blocking than receiving coming out of college.
Plus, Cottam is a greater 3rd down and goaline threat with his size. On 3rd down, you can throw a high safe out route…and in goaline offense you can throw high in the back or corner of the end zone. ( I know Cottam is 6’7’’ and Ryan is 6’5’’, but Cottam just seems long and more athletic.)
You cannot coach size…you can however coach blocking technique.
Same Treatment
I just see this as the same treatment that Bowe is getting. Haley wants both Cottam and Bowe to be his top people, but if they aren’t doing it in practice then he won’t reward them in the games. Once they figure that out completely we will have the guys on the field that deserve it. I really don’t think Haley will put the guys on the field that are “with the program” if they don’t have the abilities, but who knows.
I agree with KansasCityShuffle, I think they jumped the gun when they cut Kevin Robinson, and I wish Will Franklin would have stuck around. Oh well….
I don't remember seeing anything special out of Robinson last year
But I could be wrong……I was pretty inebriated during all the games last year to ease the pain…..

I like your style
"The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur." - Vince Lombardi
Put accurately....
Starter Brad Cottam caught the only ball thrown to him, a one-yard pass from Thigpen, which resulted in the Chiefs’ only touchdown.
Sean Ryan, a fifth-year player out of Boston College, dropped the only ball thrown to him, a wide-open sideline route on third down.
from: BleacherReport
Ryan should have caught that ball but
Can’t really praise Cottam too much for catching a ball with him standing still and it hit him right between the numbers and nobody around him because Thigpen sold it that he was running to the end zone and pulled all the defenders to him.
Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

Here is one difference though
From Looney last Thursday:
3:14 PM – Pretty slow out here today, but TE Sean Ryan just turned in a dominant goal line walk-thru period. Back-to-back-to-back TD grabs.Ryan has been hustling in practice and putting up consistent results. Haley has complimented him in press conferences a couple of times. This really isn’t a big surprise.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
