1st preseason game observations from a random fan
By no means is this definitve or comprehensive look at the first preseason game of the Chiefs vs. Texans. Rather, this is just a generalization about my observations of what happened.
Upside: The Defense, Succop, "2nd" sting recievers.
The defense to me looked good overall. Yes, they gave up 16 points, but in todays NFL that's not a lot. They also got 2 sacks early in the game, which speaks volumes compared to last years tumultuous 10 sack season. The first string defense looked elusive, confusing, and effective against the Texans 1st stringers. Yep, they gave up a few big plays, but in reality, most of these guys are in a new position which takes some time to adjust to. Judging by this game alone, I'm excited to see where this Clancy Pendegrast defense takes us throughout the season.
Succop nailed everything with a whole lot to spare. I think he's the real deal. He didn't fold under the pressure of the NFL, and the rain didn't seem to effect him. Kudo's Mr. Irrelevant, you're on the track to being extremely relevant.
The receivers who played with the first-string offense I though were decent. It's a pretty common concensus that they aren't going to be the starters judging by the game thread here at AP. However, I though they did well. Wright was 2-34 and Copper was 1-12. Bowe and Bradley were obviously the best receivers on the night, but didn't come in until garbage time (as far as preseason is concerned anyway). I was impressed with the one grab I saw Copper go up for and create a little more than he should have gained.
Savage also looked good in the game, he did all the right things. He helped Croyle get a QB sneak 1st down, and did some very good running. I wouldn't be surprised to see him taking over for Battle next preseason game as the 2nd RB. Battle also did very well I thought, but Savage is going to need another look against better NFL players to be properly evaluated.
The bad?
Offense in general was bad. It can be blamed on a number of things ranging from last years starters playing with the 2nd and 3rd string offense to adjusting to changes overall in the playbook.
Cassel threw good passes, I can't deny that. The receivers just couldn't pull them in or keep them from bouncing off their chest. Could that have been different if Bowe, Bradley, and Toomer/ Ingram were in playing with him? Possibly.
Then there were the huge plays the defense gave up quite often.
Overall:
In my opinion, this was a better team than what we saw the last 3 seasons during preseason. They were fundamentally more sound on both sides of the ball. The defense looked much better overall. 16 points is a far cry from 20+ (in the first half no less). I think it's going to take time for both sides to become a cohesive unit, but the defense looks to be far and away ahead of the offense.
My biggest worry personally is how much it looks like the offense has changed from last years Thigpen led offense. Cassel and Thigpen led a very similar offense last season from the shotgun, and it looks to be like Chiefs have gone further away from that to a more traditional pro-style offense. The Chiefs simply do not have the talent to do that offensively. The QB's and offensive line are not built for a pro offense. I can only think of an acronym I learned in college when taking classes to get my degree in computer science.... K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple stupid. Shotgun, spread, score. It's the future, it's New England, it WAS Kansas City. Keep it. Use it. I'm hopeful for this team, hopeful in that they can be sucessful. But I will remain cautiously optimistic and anxiously awaiting more evidence that they can be who we think they are

Very good writeup Saint
I couldn’t care less about the final score. The preseason is about evaluating players, not winning games. The first preseason game is nothing more than a simulated intrasquad game

I guess
If you cant say anything bad about Croyle, you just dont say anything.
he was injured. injured bad.
I always thought that Croyle was a very good QB
he just can’t keep himself on the field

Understand, Troy, we've seen this kid shine in camp, before.
And within minutes, the guy who took all the training camp reps from others (Thiggy) was on IR. We all like the way he looks, and we all think his wife is hot. We just don’t think he can hold up. And if he can’t hold up, he’ll lose his job and his wife.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Listen
Ive been here from the start of teh Croyle saga.
What I dont understand is the mentality of completely ignoring the performance of what looks to be your second string QB in preseason play. Doesn’t seem reasonable to me, but whatever.
he was injured. injured bad.
I agree.
As of now, Croyle deserves to be #2. He did a great job and if Cassel goes down, I could feel pretty good about having Brodie in there. He can make throws that Cassel cant touch.

Cassel looked excellent tonight
and you guys are annointing Croyle (AKA McInjured) as a probable/possible/likely replacement in NFL regulation game time? How often have we seen Croyle crash and burn? I’m all about 2nd chances, but the kid has had his and failed. He’s lucky to be getting this tryout in my opinion.
The o-line looked good, which gave him a chance to look good as well. Things could have gone a whole lot differently for Croyle if the line had held up their end of the deal, but they didnt, and he is only what he’s shown to this point: a brittle QB who can’t take a hit. When he convinces otherwise, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

With good football IQ and a rocket launcher for an arm.

Which means
he’s best suited as a QB coach, not a player.
Those who can’t, teach. Those who can, do

Biggest questions @ WR.
And a lot of those questions appear to be answered in the negative.
Disappointed by Ryan’s drops, especially. To go to more of a pro-style offense, they need a good blocker at TE. But if the best blocker can’t catch an easy pass on 3rd down, your offense has problems.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Need to
figure out RT more than anything. Taylor looked awful against second stringers and might be better suited at guard. McInSack is finished and should be cut. Can Pioli pull a rabbit out of his hat and get someone in here fast.
Taylor doesn't size up as a RT.
Your eyes confirm 2 things:
- Taylor will be best suited for backup LT, as predicted.
- Chiefs still haven’t answered the RT question.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
Maybe they're hiding their hand?
Cassel and Thigpen led a very similar offense last season from the shotgun, and it looks to be like Chiefs have gone further away from that to a more traditional pro-style offense.
What we see on the field definitely looks to be a contradiction to what made SENSE about bringing in Cassel and having Thiggy push him for starting time.
But Cassel looked pretty good, and Croyle threw some darts that were actually completed, out of the new look offense. Thiggy remains the guy who we want in there to punch the ball in from the red zone.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
I'd keep Croyle
at #3, and give him another year to heal up, then see if he’s durable enough. Cassel at #1, with TT competing, maybe with more spread in the playbook. See what happens
Cassel vs. Thigpen in Camp should improve the play of both.
Next on the need list: linebacker, and both lines

my thoughts
Hali looked very good getting into the backfield to make plays.
Jackson was very strong, and has superior ability for his position.
Run defense overall was very good
Running offense was pretty good… Battle and Savage are fighting hard for roster spots, and will be hard to cut.
There were plays that all 3 QBs made… I thought Cassel was right on the mark, but didn’t get much help from the receivers or the rain. Croyle looked sharp and strong. Thigpen looked scattered, but made plays.
Bowe is still the man, and will be all season.
OL still has some question marks, especially the 2nd string line.
Pollard can and will crush some people
Succop is the real thing at Kicker
Mays is earning a roster spot at ILB
McGraw still makes all the special teams plays, and he’ll be hard to cut
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
OL comment
make that the 3rd string OL… the guys that were in with Thigpen… he had NO time or pocket to work with.
The 2nd string guys did OK, with Croyle
The 1st string guys were OK with Cassel
But, yeah…they need at least one more RT
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
Agree about Hali and Jackson.
Actually, our new defense is something we CAN get excited about. Pollard was a fucking animal out there tonight too. Makes sense now that our offense has been struggling at practice.

I had to run to McD's to get some fuel
But I’d like to address everything discussed thus far;
I couldn’t care less about the final score. The preseason is about evaluating players, not winning games. The first preseason game is nothing more than a simulated intrasquad game
Agreed, with the one note being that this was a game to let our new guys and system try to gel together. Other than that, I completely agree. It’s like a preseason baseball game, it’s meaningless, and the final score means nothing.
I guess If you cant say anything bad about Croyle, you just dont say anything.
That is as good as it gets. Yep, he looked good going against backups with last season starters. What would you like to say about him? As far as I’m concerned, he’s the same Croyle: Accurate, great passer, smart, and injury-prone as hell. Is that a good option as a #2? Not to me, absolutely not. When he proves me wrong, I’ll be more than happy to acknowledge him as the future (ahem… again)
Need to figure out RT more than anything
Agreed. RT is still a position that is seriously at question. However, I think that Mcsackintosh has improved as last season went along, and is still improving. Don’t rule him out just yet, remember he’s still trying to learn the nuansces of a new position too… just like a lot of people on defense. That’s one thing that people seem to convieniently forget about last year. However, I agree there needs to be stability there, I just think that the RB’s should have that locked up if he fails on passing downs. (Disregard how well the RB’s do at pass blocking, that’s the general rule of thumb)
Maybe they’re hiding their hand? What we see on the field definitely looks to be a contradiction to what made SENSE about bringing in Cassel and having Thiggy push him for starting time.
Maybe, and that’s a HUGE maybe, but I don’t think so. I think this is what Haley wants to be, a run-first, tough football team. That’s where his roots are. However, they MIGHT be trying to be that traditional NFL team for the preseason before allowing Gailey to bring out all the stops in the regular season. As a casual fan, though, I just dont see that being the case. Haley has shown that he’s stubborn, and wants things done his way. I think when it’s proven to not work though, he’ll bend/fold before H.E. did (H.E.= the new Coors coach ;) )
Stagdsp, you made awesome points, I can’t argue against anything you said. I agree on all aspects there.
Herm Edwards: "There's FOUR quarters in football?!"
McInSack
Has had a year to learn a new position and still stinks.
Let me put it this way
If you can forgive Dorsey and his “consensus” from the MSM for under-performing, than you can forgive McSack and give him another few games to grow.
He’s the best option now, still, at RT, and that’s about all we can ask for. The RB’s need to step it up and help him in giving Cassel time.
Herm Edwards: "There's FOUR quarters in football?!"
Saying McIntish is the best option
is like being the tallest among midgets.
While I agree, it doesn’t mean the position is not an issue.
I thought Dorsey held his own for someone who came in out of shape and hasn’t had as much work as others this offseason.
I didn't say it wan't an issue
I said he’s the best we got and the RB’s need to take up his slack in protecting the QB
Herm Edwards: "There's FOUR quarters in football?!"
yeah, Dorsey looks solid
he’s strong, and eats up blocks
I thought the whole 1st team DL did a good job of setting the edge and collapsing the pocket
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
Yep, right now McSack is all we got.
Richardson looked terrible and i don’t think Brown is quite ready yet. Unless some pro-bowler becomes a free agent before the end of camp, this is what we have to work with for now. Timew to make some lemonade.

OR
Pioli will sign a new RT within the week
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
Doubt it
No quality RT or OT/OL available at this juncture. Maybe as the rosters need to be trimmed, but right now, nope.
Herm Edwards: "There's FOUR quarters in football?!"
The point was made in the live game thread(s)
that some of the playcalling was probably aimed more at evaluating RBs than at winning the game. Give ’em all a chance to do something on that same, lame delayed handoff.
This was an offense that was originally built to run the pro set all day long, and fell short last season. They’ve made some changes, and it looks like they’re going to try it again, and try to get a playaction passing game off of it. But unless we see Jon Runyan or his like come in and put paid to RT, I think it’s very likely that it’s back to the shotgun most snaps, to give the QBs some chance at surviving.
No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.
I did
and I ate it whilst writing up some post game observations ;))))
Herm Edwards: "There's FOUR quarters in football?!"
Didn't see the game...
Just got home…
Trying to catch up on things…
Overall sounds good, despite a loss…
more random observations
I’m watching the game again, and noticed a couple of other things…
The kickoff and punt coverage is Much improved over last year…. special teams as a whole will be better… they just HAVE to find a returner
The front 7 are doing a good job applying pressure… even if they don’t get there for the sack, they will create a better defense by collapsing the pocket
The penalties were dumb, and the coaches will fix that… BUT, the team looks smarter overall, they played better “situational football” … and that’ll only get better.
Battle really ran well, and ran hard.
Cassel looks GOOD. Anyone who says otherwise didn’t watch him. Yes, he was 2-5, but at least 2 of those were dropped, and the offense was focused on running. His only real mistake was the fumbled snap… which could have been Rudy’s fault
Most of all, this was JUST the first preseason game, and there’s a LOT we didn’t see out of the Chiefs… I have a feeling we’ll be impressed when the true first units are out there
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
Colin Brown
got a lot of reps at RG…
I thought he looked good in pass protection
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
I didn't notice, specifically
But, that’s a situation to keep an eye on
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
one more...
I’m trying to watch the OL and TE…
one thing I noticed, there are a LOT of different bodies coming in and out of the game…
the coaching staff should have tape on every OL, every TE, and both fullbacks to evaluate the blockers.
But, Its VERY difficult for fans to get an accurate picture of how each lineman is doing…the cameras arent’ on them all the time, and it’s hard to tell who to blame when a block is misses.
Also, having so many players rotating hurts your OL performance, as they don’t get to play together as a starting unit
"I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
