Chiefs News from the Overnight 8/15

Y'all ready for this?

Battle of unbeatens tonight, and I'm a little excited. True story.

"We’re not going to be real complicated, so I would say the most important thing is does everybody know what to do and then how well are we doing it. Going all the way back to (offseason practices), we want guys who do it the way we want it done, the way they’re being coached to do it, and then how well are they doing it. If we do that, I would imagine we would execute OK and, like I said, start to look a football team."

Haley Era with Chiefs Begins with Tonight’s Exhibition Opener from KC Star

5 How Haley coaches. Haley has said he’ll let Chan Gailey call the plays — but he’s admitted to desires to take over when the offense sputters. He’ll have to keep his cool but make players understand that, although it’s the preseason, the tone will be set as the regular season approaches.

Over on another field, the specialists were standing around talking, pretty much like they do during games, just waiting for action. Newly re-signed long snapper Thomas Gafford, rookie kicker Ryan Succop and punter Dustin Colquitt were done for the day and killing time.

"What do we do down there Saturday night?" Succop asked Colquitt. "When do we go out to kick? Where do we go? What time should we be there?"

Got To Start Sometime … Saturday Cup O’Chiefs from Bob Gretz

Here was the report from United Press International:

"A second professional football league to be called the American Football League was formed tonight and franchises were announced for six cities. Lamar Hunt of Dallas said teams would be formed in Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver, New York and Los Angeles. Hunt said Barron Hilton, a son of the hotel owner Conrad N. Hilton would head the Los Angeles franchise. Hunt the founder of the league said it planned to begin play in 1960. Hunt said the league might expand to eight teams, with the other two coming from Seattle, Buffalo, San Francisco, Miami or Kansas City. It was also reported that New Orleans was a possibility."

Thus, the world was introduced to the AFL.

AFL Memories: The Official Annoucement from Bob Gretz

The Dallas Texans got out of their Roswell, New Mexico training camp for a week and practiced in the Boston area before pre-season game No. 3 against the Patriots.

It must have been helpful because the Texans won 24-14 pushing their exhibition record to an AFL best 3-0. It was also Sherrill Headrick’s coming out party as a huge defensive force in the American Football League.

2. Bowe's playing time: Kansas City WR Dwayne Bowe has been solid the past two seasons and appeared poised to make the leap in his third season -- the year when most receivers break out. But Bowe is currently buried on the Chiefs' depth chart.

How does this effect Matt Cassel?  If anything in the long run, hopefully it helps, because if Haley doesn't bring in guys who can run crisp routes, make tough catches, and do all the things a good football does, Cassel is going to be the scapegoat for another dismal season.  Cassel sees many positives.  Click on the link to hear his comments.

KC's Chief Concern? Find Guys Who Can Catch the Ball from Missourinet

With the local boys of summer about to enter the home stretch in what can only be described as another disappointing season of major league baseball in Kansas City, all attention now turns across the parking lot from Kauffman Stadium to Arrowhead. And the inevitable questions Is: Can the new-look Chiefs, under new front-office leadership, brighten the long-depressed spirits of the Kansas City fan faithful.

Fulfilling the Hopes, Dreams of KC Sports Fans Now Square on the Chiefs' Shoulders from Examiner.com

You’re hungry for Chiefs football, eagerly anticipating your first look at the new Arrowhead Stadium, and ready to see what Scott Pioli, Todd Haley and Matt Cassel have to offer Kansas City. When the Chiefs take on the Texans tonight, you won’t want to be disappointed.

Prepare to be.

New Chiefs Require Patience from WPI

Ryans leads a revamped defense that's headed by new coordinator Frank Bush, who might use about 50 percent of his repertoire against the Chiefs. Coaches don't want to show too much in preseason, and Bush is no different.

"Right now, we need to stick with our base stuff and see who can play," coach Gary Kubiak said. "We've lost some continuity (because of injuries on defense), but we need to settle down, play our base defense and find out who's going to be able to help us as we work toward the season."

A look back at the American Football League from pressdemocrat.com

Before the Texans left for Kansas City and tonight’s preseason opener against the Chiefs, coach Gary Kubiak had a talk with his players.

"I told them that people tend to say preseason games aren’t important," Kubiak said. "I told them I thought that would be an insult to the guys and what I’ve put them through the past two weeks — to tell them this Saturday night’s not important.

Training Camp from The Houston Chronicle

"I think this is the best team I’ve ever been on," said Gonzalez, who was acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. "And I played for some good teams. We had a really good team [in Kansas City] where we went 13-3 with Dick Vermeil. We had a really, really good offense. I’m comparing our offense to that offense that year."

Falcons Display Signs of Being ‘Super’ Balanced from Yahoo Sports

Ticket holders who make their way to Arrowhead Stadium this Saturday will have their first look at the renovations that are well underway on the $375 million dollar project that is scheduled for completion next season.

NJ,

I have a feeling Chris and Joel required a little more sleep this morning. I don’t have the ability to promote other’s posts to the front page, but I’m sure Chris or Joel will once they check in.
