Chiefs Swap Out Long Snappers....Again

The Kansas City Chiefs released long snapper Tanner Purdum today.  We heard the news via Josh Looney (of Twitter?).  The Mothership has the official announcement  here.

Purdum was originally signed on April 7th.  He was a four year letterman with Baker and coached receivers at the University last year.

The Chiefs also brought back long snapper Thomas Gafford.  Back on June 19th, the Chiefs released Gafford, who was with the team for nine games last season.  He was originally signed in the middle of last season.

So, to recap the Chiefs long snapper movement.

  • October 29th: Thomas Gafford signed
  • March 19th: J.P. Darche released
  • April 7th: Tanner Purdum signed
  • June 19th: Thomas Gafford released
  • August 13th: Tanner Purdum released
  • August 13th: Thomas Gafford signed

Yikes...we might know too much about the Chiefs long snappers.  Back to work I go.

Kendall is still around....

"I will fight you!"
"What is your weapon?"
"My bare hands!"
"That is stupid. I will use a sword and I will cut off your bare hands."

Think I am joking?

There IS a Longsnapper.com. The Chicago Bears LS thinks people actually give a crap. Check it out.

Here is where you will find Frequently Asked Questions that visitors to the site ask about tips and hints to the art of Longsnapping:

Q: Are there any other drills that you do besides the ones you have listed?
A: No I don’t, everything that is listed is what I do to get better.

Q: How do I get better and more accurate?
A: Practice, Practice, Practice. The only way to get better is through repetition.

Q: Is there anything you do different snapping in the rain?
A: I grip the ball a little bit lighter. Not a whole lot but just a little. I
do not squeeze the ball as tight as I do on a normal snap.

Q: Is there anything you do different snapping in the wind?
A: No. Just make sure you have a tight spiral. A tighter spiral will cut
through the wind easier. In my mind wind can alter the snap the most.

He forgot

“place your chin firmly under your balls and throw the ball to the other guy”

I think Kendall Gammon used to have like a "Longsnapper Workshop" he hosted or something.

It’s actually something that, if properly trained, you can make a shit-ton of money “playing football” while rarely having to set foot on the field. A good long-snapper is in fairly high demand, and there’s lots of people willing to learn.

I like

how its referred to as the “art” of longsnapping.
Other arts i also appreciate: Field Goal Kicking, Hydration Engineering, Down Operator Changing

How embarrasing

Would a big juicy fart be about that time?

I doubt our LS for the season is on the roster right now.

As I commented in the Fanshot..

I was really hoping that they would bring in Jared Retkofsky. He was the LS on Steelers in the Superbowl filling in for there regular guy who was on IR. Great story on him here

at least this shows...

…they’re keep the turnstyle spinning at every position until they find someone who is acceptable. I don’t think Herm or Carl would have ever put this much focus on one position.

am I the only one

rooting for Andy Studabaker(spelling, sigh) to learn the role and then not waste a spot on a spotty snapper….or just bring back fan favorite, Kendall Gammon…

Dang

Colquitt was just talking good about Purdum not too long ago..

by tomahawk44 on Aug 13, 2009 2:11 PM CDT reply actions

Well, there's 1...

…of the 4-5 FA guys that Pioli said he would still probably bring in before the regular season. I’m guessing no one saw this one coming…

You are what your record says you are!

picture of the week.

Predictions.
1. Tank Tyler will end up surprising everyone and be the anchor of our line.

I thought Colquit liked Purdam.

Wasn’t there some big thing a few weeks ago about how Dustin thought Tyler was doing such a great job and that they were really working well together and how Dustin was praising his placement up one side and down the other … ?
