Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Todd Haley is serving notice that there is a new sheriff in town — which is a double-edged sword. It’s important that your players know that you have a plan, and I like what I see with the Haley plan.

However, I have a concern about Haley’s temperament. Forget the well-documented riff with Anquan Boldin; I have never been comfortable with the verbal spats on the sideline with Kurt Warner. There have been other incidents, which included a verbal run-in with T.O. in Dallas. Haley is a volatile coach. Players respect a coach’s consistency and will rebel against moody coaches. More importantly, players loath a coach who embarrasses them.

Ugghhh, not Dukes.

I have reached the point where I automatically dismiss anything he says. I used to overlook things, but I just can’t take him anymore.

I have no idea if he is right or wrong on this issue, but, still, ugggh.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say one positive thing about the Chiefs. Ever. So screw him.

He’s like Chris Collinsworth and the rest of these idiots. I’m not surprised anymore when I hear this stuff. If they did their research and payed any attention whatsoever to how Haley is turning around the Chiefs and the team-building approach and his philosophy of coaching, etc. What a duck!!!! … sorry…dork !!!!… uhhh…well insert synonymn for Dukes here_____________.

thing is...

practically NONE of these commentators ever WATCH the games (nor, arguably, would it be possible to). They’re handed a sheet of paper with stats on it before each game and study some film (with the bias of the stats given them already in place) and make opinions based on them. I wouldn’t expect every one of them to have to watch every game in the season start to finish and recall every play, but it’s enough reason to take anything they say with a grain of salt.

Great stats win you at Fantasy Football and Madden ‘09, but it’s nothing that will take you where you want to go in the real world.

Maybe the biggest shmuck in all of football “reporting”. He’s like Whitlock except a moron on top of that. Whitlock may be controversial and whiny and say things to get a rise out of people but at least he’s somewhat intelligent.

Dukes sucks!

I can’t believe they pay him to give his opinion. Worthless.

by TonyG88 on Aug 12, 2009 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

Forget this guy.

He references the Boldin dispute as an example for behavior that makes players not respect you, but loves to leave out that Boldin has said the incident wasn’t a big deal and he would love to play for Haley again.

It’s a nonissue.

Also, I’m tired of hearing about the players feelings. They’ve won 6 games in two years. They need to be embarrassed, they need to be pushed to the edge.

Dukes will be singing a different tune come December.

Predictions.
1. Tank Tyler will end up surprising everyone and be the anchor of our line.

I had coaches like that

we called it “respecting the coach” and “doing what he told us the first time.” We got along fine with them. I just love the outsiders trying to “make news” instead of just reporting it. If I want opinions, I turn to AP where I can voice my side of the subject if I choose, and enjoy a very humble and lighthearted debate with friends.

But, most likely, when it comes to this cat, enjoy a rebuttal from a group of people who have more intelligence than Mr. Dukes. Man, I sure love AP!

What it comes down to

Is if Hailey acts like an A-hole but they win, he will be considered a great coach and the players will love him.

If he’s an A-hole and they continue to lose, things will turn ugly in a hurry.

Hailey is using Parcells as his mentor in his style of coaching, which is great if he has Parcells like success. But if he doesn’t, it won’t take long for the players to start throwing him under the bus.

Look no further back in Chiefs history to John Mackovic for that.

Parcells didn’t exactly have a great 1st year with the Jints, but he held their attention just fine.

by dablueguy on Aug 12, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn't say he would only get a year

I’m just saying there have been head coaches from every conceivable approach. The approach isn’t what makes you succesful. Its whether you are a good coach or not.

Being a disciplinarian doesn’t automatically make you a great coach. There have been PLENTY of disciplinarian coaches that were absolute total failures.

Im saying if you are a bad coach anyway, the players will roll over on a disciplinarian coach in a hurry.

by ChiefDJ on Aug 12, 2009 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I see what your saying DJ and agree

Also remember, a lot of players hated Lombardi but he brought out the best in them. I agree with another post comment that the Bolden-Haley sideline flap has played out, but Bolden still had a great season IMHO.

One…T.O. never gets in verbal altercations with members of whichever organization he happens to be a part of.

Two…I go to Dental School in AZ and hear it everday on the radio, Anquain Boldin hates the Cardinals organization as a whole…so it is probably less to do with Haley, more do do with the Cardinals.

Three…if you don’t want to be embarassed….DON’T SUCK…that means you Sir Sack-a-lot. I would have paid a significant amount of money to see Herm kick Sackintosh’s a$$ up and down the sidelines after going matador on a DE.

Parcells and his spats on the sidelines with Phil Simms and LT seemed to work out OK. Jamie Dukes is the Herman Edwards of NFL TV guys. In totally over his head, stubborn beyond belief in the face of overwhelming evidence that he’s wrong, and just generally clueless but tries to cover it up with a big smile and glibness.

Exactly
stubborn beyond belief in the face of overwhelming evidence that he’s wrong,

When any of the other co-hosts start to disagree with him, he simply cannot accept it. Sometimes, I wonder if he has ever admitted he was wrong in his life. I think he forgets that when in a discussion, focus on the issues, and don’t take a disagreement personally.

The nights that he is one of the co-hosts of Total Access, I change the channel. I just forfeit that hour of NFL news.

Haley is simply being HIMSELF, after all, he learned from the best! DID HE NOT?

by Kansan_Chief on Aug 12, 2009 5:31 PM CDT reply actions

honestly

It really bothers me that they hire people like Dukes

He is so ridiculously bias against the chiefs…the guy NEVER has anything positive to say, if he didnt like the cassel deal because of cassel’s play, then he expands to the contract, kc then gives him a contract, and hes laughing about it, hating on it.

I am now hating on him. Its ridiculous, he wouldnt like a chief trade if we dealt a 4th for Boldin…he would spin it as not good due to the spat between boldin/haley. Overlooking that a 4th (wouldnt happen) but is just ridiculous

He really wants to use the spat with player argument for no success….if thats the case, then im sure that Parcells was a terrible football coach?

by SDChief on Aug 12, 2009 5:42 PM CDT reply actions

and furthermore

look at eli’s contract, cassel’s contract, and yes eli has won a super bowl, but then view last year’s numbers…

just saying…Dukes is a tool

So he "likes what [he] sees with the Haley plan" but it won't be good if he fails?

That’s a nice roundabout way of saying absolutely NOTHING, and playing the “told ya so” card come the end of this season.

He was one of the first people to jump on the “Cassel can’t succeed without Moss & Welker” bandwagon and I’ve been sick of his shit from day one.

WIDE RECEIVERS DON’T MAKE THE QUARTERBACK. People forget Moss fell off the face of the earth for two years when he went to Oakland. He was never supposed to be “good” again. People forget Joe Montana won two of his four Super Bowls before Jerry Rice was even drafted. WRs are a dime-a-dozen (albeit I give you guys like Moss, Rice & Fitzgerald are rare exceptions to that rule). There, I said it.

Let them rant and say what they will

The one true way to change things is to become winners, and not just a one season wonder. The Chiefs are building for the future but with and eye at wining now. Kansas City has been an underdog in every sport every time since the first pro team started in KC. Let them write us off, it will make winning all that more sweet. There is a reason why Chiefs fans are so loyal, cause we love to root for the underdog, and we LOVE it when we shock the world. Post this latest crap in Haley s office, and every thing else that’s been written about the Chiefs during this off season and wall paper the damn locker room with it. Let’s see if the embarrassed players can get a bit pissed and take that anger out onto the field and show the league a thing or two.

is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

Well Duh

As we all know the only coaches that win are the wons that pat their players on the back after each bad play, and say “go get next time”. Oh wait……(2-14)

Dukes can't find his butt with both hands

He keeps saying “players do this”….“players like that”… “players hate this”…. “players don’t trust that”…

Well, and I say this with all due respect to his intelligence (such as it is): how the #@!! would he know? Have you seen some of the pathetic teams he was on?? Is he inferring he was some kind of player??

Forget his nonsense. It certainly doesn’t take a genius to sensationalize a few headlines and ignore the rest. Bank this instead, with respect — I’d love nothing more than to see the Chiefs and Broncos vie for the division this year, and watch Jamie Dukes eat every word.

Unless that means we actually have to watch him eat. (ew)

btw

Heartfelt congratulations on the overdue induction of Derrick Thomas. I didn’t enjoy watching him beat up the Broncos, of course, but I sure loved watching him play when I had the chance and was greatly moved by his tragic, too young demise. Hard to believe it’s been nine years. I’ll always think of him when I think of KC. Rest in peace, 58. Much respect.

How's this feel?

Screw Jamie Dukes. Let me tell what I think. I think 10’s of thousands of FAMILIES are homeless right now. Right NOW!! Kids = No home!! Got it? So, if an NFL player is getting 30 + million dollars to catch a piece of leather, and can’t even do that consistently, his coach better get MOODY!! Wah Wah WAh. What about us?? Those of us who go to work every day and take shit from our bosses and suffer through hard days to eek out a living? Nobody cares if our bosses are moody! And we don’t get paid millions. So guess what? If you can’t take the heat, quit! Go to work at Wal-Mart for minimum wage and see how quickly you want back in the NFL. If these unfathomably (cool word huh) filthy rich players can’t take a litte criticism or put up with a mood swing for MILLIONS of dollars, then fire them all and start over. How many people would stand in line to be an NFL star for 250,000 a year??? MILLIONS would! And they would be grateful to make a comfortable living. So put up and shut up players! Geez, bunch of whining babies. Coaches aren’t here to make buddies. Their here to win Superbowls. Stats don’t matter. Winning matters. No player on a 2-14 team should have an ego! You feel me KC fans? Screw Jamie Dukes!!
