Connor Barth Signed By Dolphins
Connor Barth was signed to a two year contract by the Miami Dolphins on Monday. Reportedly no guaranteed money in the deal and he's considered unlikely to beat out Dan Carpenter, but may surprise. Barth's 2008 stats were very similar to Carpenter's.

Dan Carpenter is solid
why would they sign Barth?

Training Camp Competition I Suppose
They don’t expect Barth to beat out Carpenter, but his performance last year was close enough to Carpenter’s that it’ll give him some pressure. Parcells is one of those guys who likes to have people sweating for their jobs.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.
6. The Chiefs will go 7-9 in 2009, good for 2nd in the AFC West.
7. Ryan Succop will not perform better in 2009 than Connor Barth did in 2008.

Interesting
Maybe Carpenter isn’t looking as good this year without his kicking guru. Oh yea…that’s our special teams coach.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Oh yea...here's what his bio says on the mothership
Owning a well-deserved reputation for rapidly developing young specialists into top-tier performers, Hoffman’s latest star pupil was Dolphins rookie K Dan Carpenter. Under Hoffman’s guidance in 2008, Carpenter connected on 21 of 25 FG tries, including a streak of 14 straight makes, the longest string by a Miami rookie. In fact, eight of those FGs during that streak came from 40 yards or longer.
In 2007, K Jay Feely established a single-season Dolphins record by connecting on 91.3 percent (21 of 23) of his field goals. Hoffman also tutored rookie P Brandon Fields, who led all NFL rookies with a 43.2-yard gross average that season. Prior to joining the Dolphins, Hoffman served as assistant special teams coach with Atlanta (2006).
And so on…he has tutored a lot of guys. He has a solid record of kickers and punters performing well.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Barth is an NFL kicker. Good for him. He needs to be in a dome or a warm weather climate where his lack of range won’t hurt him, but he is extremely accurate.

Interesting to see the Pioli/Parcells connection
cut the other way for once.
For justice we must go to Don Pioli

Well going by past performance
he’ll end up kicking the winning field goal in next years Super Bowl.
Blame my wife!
Waiting until August!

How were Barth's 2008 stats similar to Carpenter's?
Barth hit 4/6 FG over 29 yds (66%)…Half of his FG attempts were from 20-29 yds and went 6/6 (100%).
Carpenter hit 17/21 over 29 yds (81%) and was 100% from 20-29 (4/4)
They had similar overall FG % (Carpenter 84% Barth, 83%) but only about 16% of all of Carpenter’s attempts were inside 29 yds, whereas 50% of Barth’s were from that range. Herm didn’t trust Barth over 30 yds if you look at the attempts. Barth would probably be less than 75% if he had more attempts over 30 yds
Look at the kickoff’s! Carpenter’s avg. 64.1 yds… Barths 58.6 yds
Conclusion…Carpenter must have an injury
2009-10 Predictions:
1. Chiefs will win ATLEAST 6 games, which is a big improvement over 6 wins in 2 seasons
2. Succop will bring stability to the K position for the first time in years
3. Chiefs D will atleast double the number of sacks form last season
4. Cassel will be a top 15 QB
5. Todd Haley won't make a poster and jump around holding it up welcoming the Chiefs players to summer camp, I mean TRAINING camp

Barth Missed Only Two Field Goals All Year
Both in the same game, one from 50 yards out, which is a crap shoot for any kicker. So it’s ridiculous to try and claim Barth was clearly inferior with such a small sample size.
Did Carpenter have a better season? Yes…but not by much.

Those numbers are misleading
Going back through Barth’s gamelogs, I can’t spot any instances where we punted out of what could be considered FG range. There was one instance where we punted from the 39 yr line in the Tampa Bay game, which equates to a 56 yd FGA.
I tend to think most coaches would punt out of that situation unless you’ve got Janikowski as your K.
I could get more sacks with my sack

To clarify
Those numbers don’t suggest Herm didn’t trust the kicker or that Barth didn’t have the leg.

Wonder if it helped Barth...
That Succop kicked one from 58 yards out.
Kinda makes you go, “Hmm. That’s why they cut Barth.”

He's been going 3-4 daily it seems
and missing the short ones.

Which Is Why I'm Not A Fan Of Succop
He had problems hitting the short ones in college too, particularly last year. Barth didn’t…at least not to the degree Succop did.

Agree
I am concerned about missing the short ones, but frankly, I don’t think FG’s were the deciding factor. Last season, we were ridiculously bad at kickoffs – I think we gave our opponents the best average starting field position in the league after kicking off…at least Succop can kick it into the endzone.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

I'd Rather Have A Kicker Who Can Hit Field Goals
It’s not at all hard to find a kicker out there with a big leg and questionable accuracy…as the last few years have shown it’s decidedly tougher to find a kicker who can nail the shots he’s supposed to nail and give you a chance on the long ones (Barth barely missed his kick from 50 yards).
Worst comes to worse, if they can’t live with Barth’s leg on kickoffs, they could give that job to Colquitt. He’s got leg to spare.

Academic Point, Of Course
Since Barth’s no longer here. Oh well, time to enjoy the Ryan Succop era for however long that lasts.

I see Succop went 4-4 today
The short ones he’s missing seem to usually be the first attempt of the day. I wonder if part of that is getting used to a new holder from whoever was holding in college.

So we need a specialist
To kick the first field goal of each game?
I’m sure consistent personnel will help. You know, you’d think they’d send him around to some other surfaces on fields in the general area during training camp for a little bit. Seems like you’d get used to kicking off the same turf all the time. Maybe they throw some artificial mats down occasionally.

For all the Barth fans, he went 3/4 yesterday
Carpenter went 4/4…. Let’s see Succop in game action to see how he performs before trying to trade with Mia to get Barth back

Who Cares About Practice?
It’s what they do in games that matter that’s important, and Succop hasn’t shown that he’s much of a kicker in games over his career.
