Quinten Lawrence- A look at Highlights

I was just wasting my life away on youtube this afternoon, when I decided to look up some film of Quinten Lawrence.  I realized that I never really took a look at the guy, and what I found was pretty phenomenal.  I don't know if I have seen guys this fast.  Pay attention to the first return for a showcase of his speed and at 1:34 for a display of speed and nice catch over the shoulder.

Quinten Lawrence #6 (via fbbuck31)

He really looks ridiculously fast, just covering the field, not even compared to the other guys.  It reminds me of how Dante Hall would run the whole field, but this guy's legs are longer, and in my opinion, he covers more ground, faster than Hall.

I would really love to see this guy on the field for us.  I think he has a lot to work on still (camp reports indicate his hands have not been great, and judging by that video, his route running ability is mediocre), but I feel like he could develop into a major threat that teams can't ignore, especially lined up in the slot or opposite of Bowe.

I'm rooting for him hardcore after seeing this film, and hopefully his talents and potential will quickly come to fruition.

Also, did anyone see that block around 8:00? That was a sick block...maybe we should pick that guy up to show LJ how to block for someone.

I guess

I didn’t realize how quick he was either. Could do well on special teams? At receiver I could see size being an issue for him. He seems like he is pretty easy to bring down. Does anyone know what his toughness is like / Injuries?

You mean Quinten "Get Me to the Sidelines" Lawrence

The thing that jumped out at me from that video was how quick Quenton was to get to the sidelines, and then run out of bounds instead of trying for extra yardage. Both receptions and returns.

i see what you're saying

What was he doing on those kick offs? Seriously dude, keep running. As fast as he is another 2 seconds in bounds could be another 10 yards.

Hard to say about that catches though, those could have been situational

Predictions.
1. Tank Tyler will end up surprising everyone and be the anchor of our line.

Gretz on CBS

This morning reported this from camp:

The Chiefs beat up on their WRs during practice. Coaches would hit receivers as they tried to make catches. The lightest receivers, Bobby Engram and Quinten Lawrence, had the most trouble holding on to the ball.
So far he has been having problems catching punts. Haley has yelled at him a lot, which may be a good thing. Means he wants him to get better. We shall see……

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

More drops by Engram.

I kinda feel like he might me too easy to bring down as well, but you don’t necessarily need a real ball buster on kick and punt returns.

He is great

at finding open field. He doesnt run great routes, and from camp reports, hes having trouble catching the ball.

But from what I can see, as a receiver, he is great at finding the open area, especially over the middle. He’s quick enough to beat CB’s at the line, and fast enough to squeeze between the safties up the middle of the field. Several times in the film, he beat the CB off the line, he found open space behind the LB’s, made the catch, and split the safties. His speed is deadly in the open field.

But…thats just notes from his college film. Its going to be much tougher to get that first step on CBs in the NFL. Its going to be much tougher finding open areas in the field. LB’s are bigger and faster in the NFL. CB’s are much more physical in the NFL. Safeties cover better in the NFL. Every year, there is always those guys who are extremely fast on the field. Some succeed, some dont. Why? Because in college..you can be not so great at everything, but have exceptional speed and be a factor on the field. In the NFL, you have to be well rounded. You can’t have 1 excellent quality and be average in everything else.

I expect Lawrence to make the team, but I dont expect to see alot of him on the field this year. If he can get it together, I can see him doing returns but I dont expect much of him on offense.

Oh! Heres a thought I forgot about..

Dustin Colquitt is excellent at putting spin on the ball when he punts. If you remember, even Dante Hall had trouble catching his punts. Maybe this is beneficial to Lawrence. Catching punts from Colquitt everyday should make his punt catching ability more reliable. As for Kick-offs, well..I’m not sure if Lawrence is having trouble catching those too or not.

keep an open mind

Yes, Colquitt punts were dropped by not only Dante Hall, but Eddie Kennison as well.

They are putting in a lot of extra work with him and he had a nice TD in the scrimmage when it counts. If he can catch the punts he can fly.

This is a team that lacks big plays…We will get one or two big plays in four games….charles/lawrence need to be those guys…Lawrence can really be a threat he runs in the 4.2’s

I mean really

Watch the tape on how fast he goes in a ten yard space…watch his off the snap release…hes so much faster than everyone else on the field, he wouldnt get caught behind like Darling did

although I do agree with the guy who thinks darling makes the team and plays well-responds to Haley…Lawrence can do that too…

Really, if wright at 30 makes it over lawrence, its too bad, hes a gamebreaker.

Quinten

has had a tough training camp so far.
Not sure if he is having problems with KO returns or not but if he is then I would suspect its nerves or a mental block.
Keep in mind he has never caught a punt, the one he has for a 70 yard TD is a hand off to him, its the first highlight in that video.
He also was not the main kick returner for McNeese state, Steven Whitehead was.

I have watched all the 07 McNeese games and he didn’t have that many drops 2 or three if I remember correctly so I am a little surprised he is having this much trouble, but coming from a small school, its a larger step to try to make it in the pros.

As far a running out of bounds goes, I have seen lots of big name receivers step out of bounds rather than take the hit, so I am not to worried about that.

Those highlights were the buzz a month or three ago.

WR highlights are usually misleading. He definitely has NFL speed, but at issue are NFL toughness and consistency. Can he fight off the jam? Ironically, in today’s NFL, you see a lot of secondaries AFRAID to jam a guy if he’s really fast. The BEST thing you could do to mess with Marvin Harrison or Terrell Owens was jam ’em, and defenses would repeatedly give them free releases out of fear/respect, which amounted to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I’m really hopeful, though, because of all the candidates the Chiefs have, this is the one guy who has to be taken seriously by corners on every snap, if he can BRING it every snap. If he DOES break into the starting lineup, the Chiefs will have a deep threat to be reckoned with.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Camp reports on Lawrence are similar to Heyward-Bey's in Chokeland.

Lotsa drops.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

One

thing that I find kind of interesting.
After the draft all the draft picks were brought up to give interviews with the press, except Quinten Lawrence.

by markc on Aug 10, 2009 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn't read too much into it.

Nor would I read too much into camp reports, other than that there’s a definite change in the air. For all we know, Lawrence might surprise us all.

What I’m looking for is more maturity from D-Bowe. Save your celebrating for the playoffs, like Fitzgerald does. Don’t shoot your wad in practice. Just be reliable and smart.

No question. Otis Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame.

Lawrence needs to add 8 lbs and get tougher

I think PR/KR is a position Pioli and Haley need to address before game 1 of the season. I wouldn’t want Engram fielding punts at his age.
