River Falls Roster
From the FanPosts -Joel
It's Go Time and I thought it might be nice to get the depth chart back up for us to take a look at. Making the final roster of "53" is not going to be easy for some of these guys, but it is a lot of fun to watch! There is also a ton of great coverage this year that will help us shake out the roster, and slot these guys where they should go.
With a few potential starters not playing yet, and some depth guys on the PUP, will this open the door for some others to shine? As you guys devour all the training camp info that is floating around, please reply in the comments if you feel someone is higher or lower in the depth chart. Do you have any dark horse candidates, or guys who might surprise us all?
I am starting to wonder if we might see someone NOT make the roster that we all thought would. Whatever happens, football season is finally here and I couldn't be more pumped!

Dion Gales is my guy.
I have high hopes for him. He is my sleeper. I am working on getting an interview with one of his former coaches to get some insight.

Darling in front of Bradley??? Really?
by Chiefsfan1970 on Aug 1, 2009 6:24 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Darling ran more with the 1st unit in OTAs
I am not sure where he stands right now though? I too would be a little surprised to see him beat Bradley, but it all depends on whether or not Bradley can stay healthy. A report from practice said Bradley displayed soft hands with some nice catches….good to hear.

I am thinking that Taurus Johnson will move up and Darling at 3rd

Think TJ will make it over Bradley?
Haley had some good things to say about Bradley earlier. He said his only issue is consistency but, he also said he expects Bradley to make some plays this year.
I would not be surprised to see Taurus Jackson in front of Darling though.

Definitely one of the camp battles that I am watching for.
RT may be the very biggest one for me though. I would love to see one of the young guys step up and take that spot.

Brown and Richardson both have potential
Richardson even played some LG today and according to the account looked pretty good. Could be a really good camp battle at RT for sure.

The new T.J.
Have you seen his game tapes? Pretty impressive! I would post it, but I don’t know how.
by kcchiefdan on Aug 1, 2009 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He had a great highlight reel.
I liked him mainly on the basis of the highlight reel. But based on what I saw, I saw him breaking into the league as a slot receiver behind Engram, when, as the 3rd WR on the field, he might get some favorable matchups and use his toughness, hands, and after-the-catch skills to make a difference. A real asset when the QB can extend plays, but I don’t know that he can get open quickly enough to challenge at flanker. I actually see Lawrence vying with Darling and Bradley for the flanker spot opposite Bowe. Taurus looks like an in-traffic beast. Lawrence looks like a beast in space.
by hmills110 on Aug 1, 2009 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sounds like you got it right
According to Gretz:
The Chiefs first-team receivers are lining up with Dwayne Bowe and Devard Darling, and Brad Cottam at tight end. When they got to three receivers, Bobby Engram comes in and replaces the fullback in the offensive set.So far so good. I’ll still be surprised if Bradley doesn’t win out though.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
by Zodeman on Aug 1, 2009 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Last year Darling was supposed to be the speed threat counterpart to Bowe's
over-the-middle post-up toughness. One thing that will help all these receivers is to have consistency at the QB position. #7 should bring that.

I also moved Beisel to ILB behind Johnson
I think it was a little surprising that Demorrio Williams didn’t pass the conditioning test. Unless it was injury related, I don’t think that bodes well for Williams making the roster. Does anybody know anything about why he didn’t pass?
by TheQ on Aug 1, 2009 6:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Not sure he didn't pass conditioning test
he may have been overweight or some minor ding. He had some moments last year but should have been able to step up a little more.

Yeah, it sure wasn't the Free Agent pick up that I thought he was going to be
And he strikes me as more of a fast Cover 2 Linebacker that a 3-4 Thumper. Not sure if he should be worried yet, as we don’t have a ton of depth at LB, but not an auspicous start.

Way overweight?
Much as respect the widebodies, they just don’t think the way I do. I’ll go outta my way to make sure folks trust me to hold up my end. I’d have my weight to the nearest ounce (Hold on. One more sip of water before I weigh in, guys.). The o- and d-lines are the toughest units to assemble and integrate into a unit, the individual players get the least amount of attention, and can’t be forced to do anything they don’t have a mind to do. I really hope he gets his head on straight and that that leg problem isn’t hurting his attitude. Maybe he just needs the presence of his teammates to get motivated and get serious?

Easy for us little guys to be high 'n' mighty about trainin' while hurt.
Havin’ one of your pins malfunctioning, or a sore back, is a LOT tougher when you’re carryin’ 300 pounds! Never understimate how hard some of this stuff is for a widebody. It’s truly miraculous, some of the things NFL linemen can do. They’re at the extreme edge of what the basic human body design can do in terms of size, strength, and agility. For every man who can compete in the trenches in the NFL, there are 10 LBs who can play behind ’em.
But I ain’t accusin’ you of bein’ a little guy, Steve. Really, all I know about you physically is that you have a big heart!

I'm still lumpin' 'em together until one of 'em distinguishes himself.
McBride’s a little bigger and he’s been nicked-up more. I think he’ll be healthier at the new weight in the new role. Same goes for Hali. The upright stance will give them both players better opportunities to initiate contact on their own terms. I think both have hung in there so far because they can stretch their bodies and their will to play down lineman, even though they’re on the low side in terms of size. KC wanted special quickness from DE in their 4-3, and went down a weight class to get it. This is just a better fit for these two guys, who could become as well-known a pair of thumpers as Greg Lloyd and Jason Gildon.
And I wouldn’t be at ALL surprised to see both of ‘em on the field at the same time. Be cool to see Vrabel and Thomas having a field day at the ILB spots behind what amounts to a 5-man front with Hali and McBride in the two outside slots. And, in deference to Pollard fans, I can see the Chiefs runnin’ 3 safeties behind that big front 5.
What I’m seriously considering in my hair-trigger and verbose fashion is the likelihood that Magee will steal the RDE spot clean out from under Dorsey.

Bones pretty much heal or they don’t. If it ain’t healin’ right, or healed out-of-whack, fixing it could be career-ending, I suspect. So I’m really curious about what, precisely, is the problem.

I don't think Gildon caught on right away.
As I recall, he had many of the same criticisms leveled at him that are currently being leveled at Hali. Gildon’s profile on NFL.com has him at 250. I thought he was pushin’ 260 or 270. The similarities are striking, to me, with a Pittsburgh-like commitment to blue-collar work in the trenches and big LBs to mop up for the front 3.
But basically, I like worrying about fitting an oversized ‘tweener being quick enough for some sort of LB role than I like worrying about an undersized ’tweener bringin’ enough stout to stuff the run, let alone survive the season in good health.
You could never say Gildon looked pretty in pass coverage, but teams were so bent outta shape worrying about all the big bodies Pittsburgh was bringin’ up the field, that Gildon did manage to amass 18 passes defensed in 3 good seasons late in his Blitzburgh tenure, with a max of 8 in one season. This compares to Zach Thomas’s 30 PDs over his entire career, with a max of 9 in one season. Gildon was a sack monster long before he did much of anything in coverage.

I am concerned that Hali will eventually not be able to be an every down OLB. Maybe he would be better over behind Vrabel as the SOLB? Wouldn’t he be utilized more along the line of scrimmage that way?

As a thumper? You betcha.
One of the things about Vrabel being there is his all-around LB skills being more help against the TE. But if crashin’ the line is the job description, and it very well might be, Hali’s had success at 4-3 LDE, for sure.

I don't know that it's about right or wrong.
I’m just sharing my thoughts. I don’t care if he’s an every-down player. I just care if the defense is good and I want him to have a role and think he WILL have a role, and running with eligible receivers down the field should be at best a minor part of his role, especially in ’09.

If he's healthy and hasn't lost more than half a step,
I’d expect Brown to start from Day 1, at either or both of Page and Pollard’s expense. In music, “pp” means “very quiet,” and Brown is anything BUT quiet when the game’s on the line. He’s a field general from ‘way back, and if his physical toolkit remains intact, you’ll hear trumpets playin’ (or that cool NFL Films trombone rif) whenever HE’s playin’. With all due respect for the quality safeties KC drafted, Brown has true stature and has earned a lot of respect. Just ask Urlacher who the team leader was when HE played with Brown.

The “younger generation” gets a lot of empty praise for minor deeds. When Haley says they did something well, it’ll mean something, and I think young people really crave that. It also works well for veterans, and gives the entire team a sense of mutual respect among equals. Yeah, their jobs are all different, but nobody’s better than anyone else, including the coach, who’s just as frank about his shortcomings (“They never let the assistants have a whistle.”)

That's how I try to handle my classes.
When you have the knowledge and do YOUR homework as the leader, you don’t have to play games to set yourself above people. They respect you because you know what the hell you’re talking about, your expectations are clear, and you’re fair in your assessments. You can even LIKE them and be their friend, as long as friendship is about callin’ it like you see it, and you actually see what’s happening.
A low grade on a test or homework is enough of a slap in somebody’s face. You’re there to tell ‘em how they’re doin’ and to help ’em do better. You neither candy-coat the bad news, nor do you berate anybody for doing poorly. My students usually think my class requires more work and is more fun than their other classes, at the same time. If you have the respect and the necessary authority, you can be fairly lighthearted in the interactions. The JOB is what requires 100% concentration and seriousness. Dead serious on the content, and as plain, straightforward, and efficient about it as possible.
Little things, like ending on-the-dot every day. You can always ease up after all your goals have been met.
Blah blah blah. But the things I see and hear coming from Haley resonate with lessons I’ve learned for myself in my 40s. For his age, he has it ALL over me! I have a lot of respect for the guy that I’ve never felt for a KC coach. Sure, I had stars in my eyes for Marty, when he brought the Chiefs hope, and I thought Gunther’s Pattonesque remarks were the SHIT the first time I heard HIM. Stars in my eyes over Vermeil, too. But I haven’t had to apologize for any nonsensical thing I’ve seen from Haley, which is more than I can say for Marty and Gunther. No real gripes about Vermeil, other than the KC approach to personnel, which should prob’ly be laid at King Carl’s feet.

True, but if my memory serves
Pioli watched the O line a lot during the OTAs too. He has to protect his $63 million dollar investment, and I wonder if he likes what he sees?

Maybe we are seeing the best 53 being created
Waters out
Williams out
Dorsey out
Goff out
Richardson out
Sad commentary on what will fit with the 2009 Chiefs.
NO, I don’t think that necessarilly but what does Haley think?
If you aren’t capable of practice?

Let's not go OVERboard.
First of all, Haley has said none of them appear to have long-term problems. He wasn’t specific on ANY of ‘em beyond the word “soon” and the phrase “short-term.” I’m most concerned with Williams, Dorsey, and Goff. Williams might not be able to catch on at all, Dorsey’s problem may be chronic (virtually all of the offseason), and Goff was supposed to be a breath of fresh air veteran leader.
Secondly, the Chiefs have LOTS of room under the cap and there are some very good veteran linemen in FA. Pioli’s all about the big men, in general, but they REALLY want good depth on this team, and the o-line in particular. I don’t reckon ANY of ‘em are safe, even the #1s, after last season’s performance and the relatively modest moves the Chiefs have made thus far. They’ve been VERY noncommittal, to date, as they prob’ly should be.
O-line IS a double-whammy. You strive for maximum repetitions and unit cohesion, so you want the talent in place as soon as possible, so you can build some trust and chemistry. On the other hand, you can’t really tell what you have ‘til you see ’em in pads. Makes sense Pioli would be lurking in the vicinity of the o-linemen all day. Seems to me they’d be the guys to watch the closest, right now, with your index finger poised on a hair-trigger.
Just on the basis of their LACK of moves on o-line suggests to me that they probably WILL bring somebody in to plug the holes of greatest need, which are STILL right guard and right tackle, until proven otherwise. While I doubt that Haley and Pioli are holding the 3 o-linemen for this purpose, necessarily, it might be that this gives them a measure of their quality-in-depth, by pitting their #2s on o-line against their #1s on D.

Okay
Our #2’s on O against OUR #2’s on D.
since Dorsey, Edwards, are riding bikes and Jackson is unsigned.
Waters, Goff, Richardson are maybe pedalling faster on the sidelines.
This is crap when the big Fatties are sidelined due to an arbitrary timing running.
I AM impressed that Niswanger and Albert made time along with the youngsters.
BUT, the O-Line needs time together in reps to Jell IMO

+2 You are correct, sir. #2s on BOTH sides of the ball.
Haley didn’t “consciously” decide to keep the non-participating players out in public view for the psychology of it, but from what Dorsey said during OTAs, it’s a LOT more fun being one of the participants and there’s a lot of pressure on you to NOT be the guy pedaling a stationary bike while everybody else gets to play. But you could see by the quick grin and the twinkle in Haley’s eye that he appreciated the fact that the inability of the non-practicing players to disappear somewhere inside the facility DOES put some peer pressure on ’em, and keeps ’em on-task.
Even with a dedicated player, who puts in as many hours as you could ask, not many people train themselves very efficiently at ANYthing. Left to our own devices, most of us will dawdle between tasks, spend a lot of time on things we don’t need and not put in enough time on the things we DO need, mainly because we’re mostly not that good at self-assessment. In my 30s, I got pretty good at self-training on my way to passing my prelims in grad school, which is pretty much what PhD says about someone. But I was not very efficient at it in my 20s, which is the target audience in the NFL.

players that should.....
players that should be cut asap….. from the WR’s T. Johnson, Webb, Wright. the QB cuts should be Croyle. HB cuts should be K. Smith and J. Battle. Someone that will be good this year is new OLB T. Hali just a few guesses for now.LOL

I pretty much agree with all those cuts looking at the guys in front of them
except for Croyle. Ingle Martin may win that spot, but we will have to wait and see. I think if Taurus doesn’t make the 53 he will be on the practice squad.
