Off-Season Veteran Acquisition Poll

Scott Pioli has given the Chiefs a shot of maturity by adding a handfull a players with many years of NFL experience this off season. What veteran off-season addition from the Pioli/Haley regime are you most excited about? I think they'll all offer good leadership and help us be productive.

I thought this would be an interesting discussion because there seem to be many different takes out there. Kent Babb from the KC Star believes that Montey Biesel may be the best pickup. Jason Whitlock wrote an article about how much he likes Mike Brown if he is able to stay healthy. Bob Gretz would probably not choose a favorite, but I think I remember him saying a lot of good things about Mike Goff. Pioli himself implied that a lot of people may look past what a big help Bobby Engram will be. Haley shared a lot about the example Zach Thomas sets for the rest of the defense, especially Derrick Johnson.

I am really most excited about the mindset that the group brings us a whole, but I thought it would be fun to do the poll anyways.

Feel free to write someone in under the comment space if a player is not listed in the poll.

Goff

I really like Mike Brown but i went with Goff just because i thought the saftey position was something we had locked up. Mike Brown could be the captain of this defense but i would hate for him to steal the starting spot from my boy Bernard Pollard or Page

Hard to say

I think all these guys in their respective position bring much needed leadership. I’m excited about the team as whole right now.

The offseason is making me sleepy.

Nothing really sexy, but I’d say Brown because of the potential payoff. Goff’s average at best and plays guard, so he’s not really on the radar for me. I guess Brown wins by default, because none of the others does much except provide a one- or two-year stopgap and some good on-the-field/player-coach wisdom.

I voted Goff

But only because I think RG was the worst single position on the team last year. Every one of these guys can bring a lot of leadership to a team that had none last year. Whether or not any of these guys make it past this year, they will bring stability and be on-field generals. That alone will account for a large part of what I hope is a huge turnaround this year.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

You thought Jones was that bad? I thought middle linebacker was the worst, followed perhaps by defensive end.

by burntorangehorn on Jul 8, 2009 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm no expert

But I take my cues from a number of sources. They let the guy go without trying to keep him so obviously Pioli and Haley had no use for him. But I really quote Mitch Holtus on this in his interview before the draft when he pointed out RG as the weakest spot. I have to agree and think that was why we ended up doing so much pistol and spread. It forced us out of trying to use the power running game that Herm and Gailey were wanting to use.

The very next worst position was MLB, but truly the whole linebacking crew was a mess last year. DJ had a few good games, and Williams looked good here and there, but no working as a unit. Too many injuries. Too little coaching. Too little cooperation between Herm and Gun. The whole D sucked, with the D-backs being the best part of it. I also think Dorsey having been able to start all 16 games and post up decent numbers (other than sacks) was a bright spot. Other than that it was like watching a solar eclipse…and I hope it doesn’t repeat itself anymore often than an eclipse.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

LBs struggled. LBs were on the small side.

A perfect storm of Gun wanting Donnie Edwards-types and trying to coach-up a Cover-2 scheme that didn’t have the pieces in place. The Cover-2 requires the d-line to swallow the o-line AND get to the QB all by themselves. It works great if you can find the players to fill out your card in the front 4. Chiefs never quite did that, despite repeatedly reaching for a Tampa-2 d-line.

LBs are now bigger, with ONE smallish (238 lbs is target weight) speedster in DJ. Also, the d-line is going to be less heroic and more workmanlike, giving the LBs more predictability, which they never had, before. I saw many of the struggles of the LBs as a symptom, rather than a cause (exception: Pat Thomas).

D-backs looking good was because the D was set up to protect them and prevent the TD. This bent a lot of things outta shape. Again, symptom, rather than cause. My biggest question is the DBs, quite frankly. This D is built to let the LBs flourish and control the middle. Without all those smallish LBs playing like extra safeties ‘most every down, we’ll really see for the first time just what our DBs can bring to the table. I THINK they’ll be OK, if the front 7 can dominate the line of scrimmage and generate consistent pressure. But the DBs will be put in more situations where they’re expected to jump routes and “read” the intentions of the QB, rather than robotically perform dance moves carefully and rigidly choreographed by the DC.

Outstanding group of verterans

Outstanding group of verterans and they’ll all add something positive to the Team. I really like Brown and Vrabel but think Goff is also going to be a big help .. so I voted for Brown but could of picked any of them. I think this is more of a sign of how sharp a guy Pioli is and how he has a great ability to integrate different experience levels to move the entire Team forward.

Zach Thomas

I voted for him because I remember on one of Todd Haley’s press conference, he mentioned that Zach was hard working, a good role model, and stays in shape during the offseason, Todd also mentioned that Derrick Johnson has been following Zach around a lot, so Zach being here excites me because he can get Derrick to play linebacker to his potential people want

ZT was playing out of his natural position last year.

People could be surprised by his production now that he is back where he is comfortable again.

Voted Goff

for the stability it wil bring the right side of the line. If MacIntosh has really gotten in as good of shape as BA than we may actually be able to run the ball to the right side this year. Love the ZT and Brown signings as well, but I believe you have to be able to run on 3rd and 1 to move the chains and keep the D off the field and we just couldn’t do that last year.

by TonyG88 on Jul 8, 2009 11:31 AM CDT reply actions

Who's BA? Trying to place it off the top of my head and can't.

Agree with the 3rd-and-1 comment. Glaring issue with last year’s Chiefs. It was an embarrassment to the team that they had to pull LJ off the field in 3rd-and-short.

I picked Brown....

…. Maybe I’m being a loyalist, Go Big Red, but I love love love the Mike Brown signing. When he is healthy he is one of the best safties in the game, a guy who can play from sideline to sideline and between the ears. He is a great leader and is exactly what our 2 young safties need to put that pressure back on them, Pioli and Haley will pick the best players and if that means one of them sits then so be it. This is a can’t go wrong deal, provides a mentor, a motivator, depth and competition. Goff is a nice stop-gap but will he make anyone else step thier game up? I don’t think so. Vrabel is the frosting on the Cassel cake, Thomas is a really good pickup, Engram… meh, Biesel I’m not expecting alot from. I like Mike Brown because he will provide this team with a multitude of additions.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

LOL..well I'm a Jayhawk

But Brown was an absolute animal. When he left NU, he had the record for career tackles. How badass is that? I am stoked about getting him. Just hope he stays healthy.

Yeah, Engrams play may surprise some people.

He is and has been one of the best third down slot recievers in the game.
If Bowe draws a lot of double coverage (and I expect he will) Engram should have some chances to get open and he is DANGEROUS when he has the ball in his hands.
He may not be as fast as he used to be but, his routes will still allow him to get open and he has great hands. Also, it seems to me that WRs can play for a long time w/o dropping off too much in quality.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jul 8, 2009 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Only thing surprising about Engram is how he's always been overlooked.

He’ll be our Ricky Proehl, if things play out as I hope and expect. He’s not a field-stretching wideout, but he knows how to get open out of the slot, and make the tough 3rd down completion. And the EASY 3rd down completion, which was pretty absent last season.
