VIDEO: Tony Gonzalez Talks Kansas City Chiefs Management, Brian Waters
Video courtesy of ESPN's AFC West blog (via GenericBrand in the FanShots)
On Brian Waters:
I haven't spoken with Brian in a while. But I was talking with him about the same time I was traded. He told me he was thinking about getting out of there too. He's in the same situation I'm in.
(Editor's Note: Emphasis mine. There was a small contingent of folks who thought the original report on Waters wanting out of town was some sort of fabrication from Jason Whitlock. Tony's words above clearly demonstrate that is not the case. Certainly not much of a question anymore but I thought it warranted a mention.)
I understand what Brian's going through. He wants to end it on a bright note and he can probably see the end coming down the pipe, too.
Brian is a pretty strong willed person and so are Pioli and Haley so hopefully there is a compromise.
On the secrecy with Scott Pioli:
It might not be good. From what I can tell, a lot of the media types are not happy with them because they're so tight lipped. One thing you can't argue with is that Pioli has built a dynasty up there in New England. If that's what they're used to, then I say let's see what they do first.
On what he expects with the Falcons:
Do I need to go out there and catch 90-100 balls? No, I don't think so.

Really?
He’s from KC. I’ve heard his name now and again but don’t know a ton about him.

He’s got a lisp he tries to cover up, and it makes everything he says come out stale, and sound very dry.

His "best coach" is reason #1 why he's out of town.

God Bless TonyG...
As much as I hated to see him go, I’m really thrilled for Tony. He absolutely went to the perfect organization… Arthur Blank and their GM Mike Smith have shown remarkable resolve and character in the face of the devastating betrayal Micheal Vick wreaked on that entire city. For them to be where there are now is a testament to the character of that whole team – and it shows fans of the NFL all over this country it was not that team, their owner or mgmt who betrayed the standards of high personal conduct and morality the Falcons have stood for every since Mr. Blank came into the league.
Tony Gonzalez is a prime example of all of those traits… and a tremendous team player as well as football talent. If he’s got to finish his career anywhere other than KC, I’m glad he’s in Atlanta. And I hope he helps bring that city a Super Bowl trophy.

I don’t. A Super Bowl victory by Atlanta means the Chiefs didn’t win the Super Bowl.
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

my personal hope
Is that he makes it there with the Falcons and the Chiefs are there to beat him. Probably won’t be this year.

You know I dont mind being the ass clown here
but I am starting to get tired of this same old crap with players who leave the team and now are experts on whats wrong or how the new regime is going to work out. I really don’t care what Tony and Jared and whomever else thinks about what is about to happen here. As far as I can remember, most everyone here supported both these guys through winning and losing years. If they are that interested in what it will take to fix things, maybe they should have stayed around and enjoyed the successes, but it was going to take a strong will to work through the problems.
Brina Waters still has a chance to show what fortitude is all about by staying and seeing this program through to better times and maybe, just maybe can get that trophy here. Not every player was meant to be a Super Bowl Champion, but every player has a chance to become champions of the game itself by leaving every thing they bring to the game on the field before the last whistle blows.
I guess its the old fashion in me that thinks back to the guys who made this game great in the early years. The one’s who played for the love of the game, not for the money and notoriety it could bring.

+1
I was actually unimpressed with this interview. It came across smug to me and got me thinking about a few things.
One. He better retire in two years or three at the most or he’s going to get alot of hate for leaving KC. If he leaves town because he thought it would take too long for them to turn it around and compete before the end of his career and then goes ahead and plays for five or six more years thats not going to go over well here.
Two. I don’t think he has all this class that people think he does. From what he’s saying it sounds like him and Waters were having circle jerks feeling sorry for themselves and how they were the only “experienced players” instead of stepping up to help out. You think a guy like Zach Thomas would’ve say around and moaned or stepped up?
Three. As stupid as it sounds(sorry I’m going to sound like a Bronco fan a second) I’m glad he’s gone. From the sounds of it he had very little to contribute to this team other then some production on the field. He is a great player and did contribute alot on the field and wouldve help Cassel on the field but as far as the intangibles and being a teammate I think he’s pretty worthless. Pioli did a great job in getting a 2nd rounder for him especially if he can parlay that into an RFA player next offseason(Wilfork anyone?) or into a needed WR or OLineman.
I wish him luck in Atlanta but the shame is I really don’t think he’s going to achieve what he set out to do. That team looks like a clone of the Vermeil Chiefs and in a tough NFC I doubt they will achieve much more then he did in KC over the next two to three years.

Damn
that’s now plus 2 in one thread, Generic. I too was unimpressed with the interview and came more from a place of a bitter ex who rather than being happy for him was bitter about what he gave up. Good riddance as far as I’m concerned, though I wish he would have stayed. As bipolar as that is, I think Pioli knew from that start what he had to do and thats get real leaders in the locker room. Gonzalez is a phony leader and he ain’t got shit on the Brian Dawkins & Ray Lewis’ of the world (by the way, the Eagles not resigning Dawkins was the stupidest off-season move of the year). It’s probably best he move on so we can whipe the slate completely clean in KC because lets face we haven’t been exactly the definition of winners. I hope ATL bombs next year just so our 2nd rounder will be all that higher & that we become copycats of NE by starting to stockpile 2nd rounders

I don't understand.........
Why everyone is saying he came accrossed as smug,i didnt get that feeling at all from the interview. I also dont think it’s fair to say that he was sitting around feeling sorry for himself, and moaning……..lol come on that’s pretty weak.
To me it just sounds like a bunch of guy’s sitting around moaning because he’s gone. I hate the fact that he chose to go somewhere else and finish his career, and not stay here, but am i going to say he wasnt a team player ………….NO………… i wasnt there at the practices or in the locker room, and neither was any of you guy’s.
T.G stepped up everytime he took the field, and he did it for the Chiefs for 12 years, yes it sucks that he gone to another team now, and IMO he had just about as good a chance with the Chiefs as he does with the Falcons to win a Super-Bowl.
I sit here thinking to myself that half you guys would be saying how great he was if he came back next year. Half the people saying he was acting like a punk, and not being a good role model for the younger players are the same people that want to sign people like Plaxico.

Well said Lanier, your no ass clown
I agree. Gonzo never gave the new regime a chance or knows how they really operate, he based his decision on hear say in my opinion. I can understand wanting to win in a Superbowl, but the other 52 players on the team would like that as well. I’ll say this again, I don’t believe that the team only revolves around one individual. I refuse to believe that TG was the only option to throw to or Bowe is the only wide receiver to go to or that LJ is the only running back capable of running the ball.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

Leadership
I have heard it from a number of places, that the biggest thing this team lacked last year was veteran leadership. When I hear this guy talk about looking around the locker room and not seeing anybody but old guys and real young guys and thinking he needed to get out, it really chaps my ass. When he took Thigpen aside last year and started working extra with him watching tape, was that an act of leadership or was it a selfish me-first thing? As I think about it now, I think it was me-first, because the others who joined had to do it of their own accord, not because Tony was pushing ALL the receivers to come in and work with them. Instead of stepping up and being a leader, sounds like he and Waters both shunned the young guys and copped attitudes about the situation. At least that’s the perception I get from this. Sure he was a great receiver, but if you ain’t all in for the team, you are part of the problem, not the solution. Looks to me like the team will be better for his having been traded. Now I’m really wondering about Waters…maybe he needs to go too, because if he isn’t going to put forth the effort he is wasted roster space despite ProBowl status. We need leaders, not whiners.

As one of the small contingent
To me, this STILL doesn’t confirm Whitlocks story, but it shines light on what the circumstances would have been. Tony does not confirm the report, just mentions strong wills. What I got out of it is that he and Waters both copped attitudes way last fall, and that hasn’t changed. In light of having an attitude, Whitlocks report is even more condemning of Waters. It still appears the guy just showed up out of the blue, unannounced, complete with bad attitude and ready to tell the new guys how things need to be. I’ve been the boss for enough years to know what MY reaction would be to that. I believe that if he had called to make an appointment to talk to Pioli an Haley and had come in with a good attitude that there would have not been anything to report Then Brian could have looked like a good guy. Now he just sounds like a whiney bitch. Unless he shows up to camp in shape and with a better mindset, then he needs to go too.
