Alex Magee, DT, third round, Purdue: The stout Magee may get a chance to start as the nose tackle in the Chiefs' new 3-4 scheme. The team believes he is ready to contribute. Don't expect spectacular numbers, but Magee has a chance to be nice anchor on the Chiefs' line.

Quinten Lawrence, WR, sixth round, McNeese State: Lawrence is a project, but he has elite speed and he could get a chance to be the Chiefs' returner right away.

McGee is playing end not tackle

dammit Williamson, get yer s*** straight.

*Magee, sorry

the only reason I bring this up is because he isn’t quite big enough to play at nose tackle. Most nose tackles in the scheme we’re playing are over 300 pounds and a few inches taller than Magee. He’ll be competing with Dorsey for that second DE spot and might be moved to tackle when we go to the 4-3 looks.

I'm actually looking forward to see how this draft class pans out.

There’s no question in my mind that Jackson will be a stud but the rest of this draft looks really good to me. Magee is versatile and can play any position across the DLine and so say he was the #2 3-4 DLineman in the draft behind Jackson. Washington I think will prove over time to be the steal of this draft. I’m not sure what was holding him back at Ohio but this guy has the physical tools to be an incredible player.

Donald Washington was considered a player with 'character issues'...

just like the rest of the players we drafted.

Donald Washington’s stock dropped because he didn’t get to play the entire season. I believe Robiskie, and James Lauranitis stole the spotlight at OSU

Oh, and that Malcolm Jenkins guy...

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Jul 6, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah....

I think he’d want to be sure he knows what position these guys play, before proclaiming them possible starters!

Magee will get playing time with Dorsey… but he’s not a NT.

The 2nd day of the Chiefs 2009 draft class has a lot of potential, but nothing for sure.
I guess that can be said of any draft class… but I think it’s more pronounced in this one.

Washington has amazing athletic ability,
Brown is huge, and capable of taking over at RT someday,
Williams could be a diamond in the rough at RB, could take over for LJ
Lawrence could be a bust or the KR/WR of the future
Succup could be the starting kicker, or irrelevant
O’Connell is supposed to be super athletic as well…

So, I guess the idea on day 2 is to draft tremendous athletes and try to turn some of them into players. I think we’d all agree that if half of them work out, it was a good draft

by stagdsp on Jul 6, 2009 1:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm 100% sold that Succop will be our kicker.

I’ve watched this guy for the last three years and with a little NFL training I think he’ll be a heck of a kicker. The biggest thing I noticed with him in college is when it counted, in the high pressure situations, he made the kicks.

by GenericBrand on Jul 6, 2009 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I figure it like this...

If your team is able to get the final pick of the draft as a compensatory pick, why not take a chance on a kicker. Low risk/high reward.
That could make Mr. Irrelevent pretty damn relevant.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jul 6, 2009 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're probably right

Barth was OK… but I think they really like Succop

by stagdsp on Jul 6, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've seen pretty much every SC game in the last three years...

And I can only remember him missing one clutch FG in overtime vs Tenessee a couple years ago. And even last season with injury, although maybe his % doesnt show it, he was great.

Succop is dangerous

the dude missed TEN field goals last year for God’s sake. That’s 30 points! I don’t care how strong of a leg he has. He missed one from under 30 yards!

He also got WORSE as his college career went on and he got more chances to kick.

Stats Overview Kicking
YEAR FGM FGA
2005 0 2 0.
2006 16 20
2007 13 17
2008 20 30

Even if he was perfect all camp and preseason I would be worried. I fear Medlock 2.0.

by Patrick Allen on Jul 6, 2009 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

All the statistics suggested that Medlock would be more successful in the pros

Sometimes, guys just bomb…at least it wasn’t a 1st round QB pick

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Jul 6, 2009 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He played the entire season last year with a brutal abdomen injury and shouldnt have even been playing.

But he toughed it out and still put up very respectable numbers.

by GenericBrand on Jul 6, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You cant just lump some stats together and judge a player. But if you want to go by stats 6 of his 10 misses last year were from 40+ yards, and again from a player who really shouldnt have been playing because of his injury. Not to mention the fact that he did not practice all season long so that he could even participate in games probably didn’t help either.

Theres always more to a player/situation then stats can show and you need to see the guy play to really get an idea of how good he is. He wont be Medlock 2.0.

by GenericBrand on Jul 6, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

When you are a kicker

stats are all that matter. You eithe rmake the kick or you don’t.

So yes I will judge the guy by his stats and his stats say he missed 49 of 69 attempts or 71%. That isn’t going to cut it.

Before his “injury year” he was 29 of 39 or 72%. He was 0 of 2 his first year so I will throw those out. He is still 29/37 or 78%.

If Succop can get up to about 85% I’d be hppy but so far, he had never done it.

Right now Bath is a more accurate kicker.

by Patrick Allen on Jul 6, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Theres context to stats that youre missing.

78% is a very good average for a college kicker and you arent looking at all the factors into all those kicks. Like I said you can’t evaluate a player by his stats alone.

Potential

I absolutely love the potential Quinten Lawrence has. I think he has the most potential of our second day picks. He’s got the ability to be KR/WR we need and haven’t had since Dante Hall. (Not saying he will be as good as Hall was in his prime, although I’m not saying he can’t) I’m most excited to see how Lawrence works out. Hoping we got a sleeper out of the daft in Lawrence

I like him

More at KR/PR. He needs to work on his hands and i don’t think they are good enough to become a WR for us. I agree with KC Nate though, he does have alot of potential.

Magee

Now that we bring it up… Magee was the one draft pick I questioned more than any other.

I understand the concept of building the front lines…

I tolerated (but didnt’ love) the Jackson pick in the First round…

BUT, could they have filled another hole on the team (WR or RT) instead of drafting DEPTH with that #3 pick?

Especially considering they werent’ able to trade back into the 2nd or lower 1st round, I would have personally thought it crucial to fill a STARTING position with that 3rd round pick.

But, I do believe Magee will be a good player, and a DL rotation is important… I just would have gone another route.

by stagdsp on Jul 6, 2009 1:37 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think they picked

Magee because hes versatile. Dorsey is pretty small to be an end in a 3-4, so i think they were just doing that so they could, maybe, have a starter for that spot and Dorsey for 4-3 situations. I don’t think he was the biggest question for me..mine was more of Washington at CB.

by Wrestler189s on Jul 6, 2009 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dorsey is not too small

The Cardinals have Bertrand Berry playing the exact same spot as Dorsey. Dorsey is not too small.

When your D-line gets tired, you start losing the game...

and since we moved Hali and McBride (and Johnston at the time) out of the D-line rotation, we absolutely needed to build that depth in the d-line.

Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

by PVChiefsfan on Jul 6, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1

Part of the reason teams like the Eagles and Giants are so successful is the deep D-lines they have.

by ajanzen on Jul 6, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

TRUE... BUT...

Couldn’t depth have come later in the draft or FA?

Just for the sake of argument, say they took

WR/KR Derrick Williams from Penn State or WR Patrick Turner from USC or WR Mike Wallace from Ol Miss

OR

C/G Antoinne Caldwell from Alabama, T Robert Brewster from Ball State or Louis Vasquez from Texas Tech

THEN, with the 5th Round pick used on Colin Brown…
get a guy like ILB Jasper Brinkley

OR with the 4th rd pick, DT Sammie Lee Hill or DE Kyle Moore

Anyway, i know the draft is long over, just my humble opinion

+1000

I would have seriously taken a look at a tackle with that pick…Who knows, maybe one of our young backups is being groomed to take that spot.
IMO the Chiefs season is going to hinge on the play of the O-line this year. I feel pretty good about the defense at this point but, I would really like to see an electrifying offense this year. I would especially like to see a great running game like the old days.

Does

anybody think Brown has a chance at being the starting RT over Mcintosh?

by Wrestler189s on Jul 6, 2009 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

McIntosh

I have high hopes that McIntosh will have an excellent year. I know the right side was awful last year.

Reasons that I’m hopeful (not trying to make excuses for last year):
1. I think it’s harder to switch sides after a lifetime than we realize. Haven’t done it. Don’t really know. But I would think the footwork and even arm movements would be very unnatural at first. After briefly pouting last year, I think he gave it an effort and can actually get it done this year at RT. Thought he did a decent job when he first played LT upon his arrival at the Cheifs.

2. Hopefully he’ll have fewer dings and be healthier than last year.

3. Play of the right guard will hopefully be much better this year. Not saying Mac would have been perfect, but I believe the epicenter of O-Line problems last year was right guard.

I think Brown’s a year away. Unless you are top tier, like Albert, I think line players take a year or two to get ready.

Plus

it was mentioned(I think on a gretz story from OTA’s) that he lost a decent amout of wieght, so thats a good thing as well!

Not this year.

I want to see Richardson step up and take that spot.

I haven't seen enough of Brown to know but...

Herb taylor did a GREAT job last year on the other side and Richardson is just a beast of a human being. I definitely think it’s possible that we could have someone besides Mcintosh starting this year.
If Mcintosh does become the starter, I will have to feel as though he earned it in camp because, I don’t think the new regime will just start him because of his contract. I will also say that I thought he started getting used to the right side toward the end of the year last season and played much better. With the addition of Goff at RG, his job will become much, much easier.

by Chiefsfan1970 on Jul 6, 2009 2:02 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I like Herb, too

And hope we have him around as an all-purpose backup for a while.
Will be interesting to see the new regime’s assessment of Richardson.

by sunny D on Jul 6, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im not a fan

of Herb, so i dont really care if he goes. Hopefully its a close one between the RT’s. If mcintosh gets it by pretty much default , i think we will be in for a longggg year….

by Wrestler189s on Jul 6, 2009 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is promising though

That Mcintosh has a real RG playing next to him and he’s dropped a lot of weight and is in better game shape. Not to mention it’s year two for him at his new spot.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Jul 6, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agree
If Mcintosh does become the starter, I will have to feel as though he earned it in camp

IF he wins the job… good for him.

IF Richardson or Brown step up and beat him out… even better.

As long as the line is better than last season, I’m happy

Williamson is a waste of time when it comes to the Chiefs. Mageee isn’t even being looked at as a NT. He’s gonna play DE, and then slip inside in some passing situations, same as Jackson, same as Dorsey.

by dablueguy on Jul 6, 2009 2:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

exactly

I think ESPN as a whole is a waste of time for Chiefs news.

I saw the “insider” rumor about Brown challenging both saftey spots…
it’s just a recap of the KC star article.

So… bottom line… if you want Chiefs news, check the star and the “mothership” OR
even better, get it all in one place by coming to AP!
