BECAUSE I'M BORED LET'S PLAY GM FOR THE DAY
Well the same things seem to get discussed and since we have a long ways to go to see some football, I figure lets see who thinks the best available free agents are that can fill the holes you think the team still has.
Pick which position you think we need help in, and pick your top player per position that you would choose to improve the team.
Everyone on this sight seems very informed on the Chiefs so I'm looking forward to seeing your GM skills. You can get the list of available free agents on the free agent tracker on NFL.com.
Here are my feelings on needs and who I think would improve our team:
QB:I still think we are lacking back-ups because I am not sold on Croyle even being in the NFL. I also think that there is no one available that would improve the team. J.P. Lossman has potential but we got the best free agent.
TE:I think we need some experience here without T.G. I'm gonna miss watching him in the red and gold. I like Owen Daniels and am actually surprised he hasn't been picked up. He would be an immediate improvement to that position.
FB: If your going to have a full back, you might as well get a tough one, and I'm not sold on Mike Cox. Unfortunately there are no FB available. There is a 260 pnd 6-2' running back that was a rookie from Jac. Anthony Cotrone. I wouldn't want to get smacked by a rb that big. He'd be worth checking out.
WR: I think Haley was successful because he had three bad ass receivers. If he wants to run his O like that I'm not to convinced on our receiving core. Bowe still needs to get better at catching the ball. Bradley has potential but I'm not completely sold. Engram's pretty old for a receiver. He gets hurt a lot to. Webb still has a lot of work.
It seems like there are a lot of big names out there. Harrison, Buress, Boldin(I know he's not a free agent, but he is available), I don't care what any one says. Harrison and Plex are both immediate and huge improvements to what we have and I would sign them both. I also think DJ Hackett and Reggie Williams have a lot of potential that can be developed. We would have a sick group of receivers with Bowe, Harrison, and Plex. To bad Plex is probably gonna sit out this year.
O-Line:I think we could of got some players that were available earlier in the year but they got swooped up. We are the weakest here on offense and this could make or break the season. I think RT is still a problem and has never been corrected since Carl transition tagged Tait. One of his top five dumbest moves all time!!! D-Mac is average at best. Goff can play the RG and I think he will do well at that spot. Lets see what happens at center. Unfortunately, I don't see any free agent improvements. I hope we draft or get lucky with a FA on our holes here.
I will do the Defense on another post later.
Sorry this isn't up to some peoples standards when it comes to posts. I just like the fact that there are Chiefs fans that want to discuss the Chiefs year round. You guys rule. Go Chiefs!!!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

There are only two positions I agree with you about...
WR and O-line.
Although IMO Matt Jones would be the best addition for the chiefs at WR due to his youth and potential. I am not as interested in the other guys so much although, I would love to see Boldin if he were not so expensive. On the O-line, I think that it will be interesting to see if D-mac even becomes our starter this year. There are some very talented young guys who could fill the RT spot and may be able to unseat Macintosh as the starter. If he is our starter in Baltimore in week 1 then, I have to think he earned it and noone else was able to take the job.
QB, TE, and, FB are all positions where I think the Chiefs are set. Chances are very slim that Croyle will even see the field due to Cassel and Thiggys proven toughness. I still think that Croyle is a very good QB and as long as he is getting good protection, he will do a great job. Mike Cox will be fine in the limited role on this offense and I am looking forward to seeing what Cottam can do in the red zone as a TE. The guy is 6’7" and should be a GREAT weapon in that part of the field.
Here is my issue with the offense this year. It seems as though the O-line will be best at pass protection but, I wonder if our receivers are able to carry the team. I DONT think our O-line will be that great at run blocking although I think that our RBs are the best ball handlers on the team. I don’t know if that makes sense to anyone but, it seem as though the strengths of the line don’t really match up with our skill positions.

Owen Daniels was RFA
and if I remember signed just before their mandatory camp last month.

Good Job chiefsking
My thought is on WR. When teams start cutting down their rosters during camp.
Do the players get treated as FA’s or Waived players and teams in draft order have dibs?

When Players Get Waived In Training Camp
Teams have dibs on their waiver claims based on the order of the previous year’s standings. Unless the player passes through a set waiver period (I don’t know how long) after they get cut, after which they’re an unrestricted free agent and can sign with anyone.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.

Right now it's four years
In the absence of a CBA extension, that will move to 6 years.

Starting next season...
So guys like Shawne Merriman who were drafted in ’05 could actually be slapped with a 1st/3rd tender and sat on for like $2 million in 2010.

Bored...(Offense)
WR; none of the available FA WR’s excite me in the least. I’d like to see us talk to Houston near the end of camp & see if we couldn’t pry J. Jones away from them. I think this kid has a lot of potential.
OL; I think we have to take a “wait & see” attitude here; will Richardson or Brown be any help at RT? Can Taylor play some guard?

If *I* were GM
from everything I’ve read about the system that’s being implemented offensively, The first move I would have made would have been with TG, but..not to Atlanta for a draft pick. I’d have used him as part of a trade scenario that would have brought Boldin to KC. Boldin is young, fast, and would complement Dwayne Bowe perfectly. I’d also be working with both Vrabel and Waters, trying to do whatever I could to get them on the Bandwagon. When given the choice between a journeyman veteran O-lineman and a perennial pro-bowler to mentor and anchor my line, I go with the Pro-Bowler every time. Also, it’s very Obvious that Vrabel really doesn’t want to be in K.C. but, is stuck with the trade, So, If I can’t get him on the bandwagon, I get what I can out of him and deal him next year for what I can. Certainly, I don’t give him a long term or high money contract. Going back to WR. As talented as he Is, I Burress is too much trouble, and frankly, with LJ already in the locker room, that would just be too much ego. Boldin may have some ego, but he leaves it on the field and for the most part stays quieter than Burress. I let Bones and Cassell battle it out in camp for the starting spot, and pretty much consign Brokie Croyle to the third string, to be cut next year. I immediately start scouting younger, talented Defensive players who will be available for free agency next off season, And you can bet that come draft time next year, I’m going defensive again, Unless Bones and Cassell prove to be worthless, then I’m looking at Tim Tebow out of Florida State. Guys who I think are going to prove their salt this year? Glen Dorsey, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Jarad Page, Mike Brown. I think that on the offensive side of the ball, look for breakout years from Larry Johnson, Dwayne Bowe, Matt Cassell. I think that if Waters gets on board, the line will be a much better unit. with him and Goff there, I think that we’ll maybe even see a few dark horse candidates come into their own during training camp. Next year draft focus: Pass rushing Linebacker, Offensive Line, Wide Reciever, QB if Bones and Cassell drop the ball.

harrison is a thug
there is an article on espn about some of the stuff harrison has done over the years. and it turns out harrison isnt the “nice guy” everyone thinks he is. he shot some guy in philly. him and his cronies beat up some kid for asking for his autograph at the pro bowl. and he choked a ball boy for throwing a ball too close to him before a game once. heres the link to an article about it in espn. http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3827402

lets go and get
burress
did he do much other than shoot himself in the foot?
burress, bowe, and engram
that would be similar to what cassel had in NE

Who knows how much Burress is even going to play this year.
He could have a long suspension since Goodell has made it indefinite. I still like Matt Jones, but the baggage is there also, but the suspension might not be.

my thoughts
Chiefs are about as set as team is at QB (or at least as set as they are going to be!)
TE is yet to be seen, but there’s a great competition going on… I look for Cottam and Curtis to both have a role this year.
FB- Cox is fine… unles Peyton Hillis becomes available
WR- the Chiefs’ WR corps is underrated. Bowe will have a big year, Engram will be solid, Bradley can make some exciting plays. Even Darling seems to be showing up in the offseason. Lawrence and Taurus have long term potential…
IF they wanted to pick up a FA WR, I would lobby for Toomer. He’s very solid, consistent, and proven. Matt Jones would be ok too… IF he can stay away from the powder.
OL- RT is going to be a good competition… whoever wins, it should be better than last year. Every other position should be as good or better than last season, and I don’t see too much on the FA market as of now that would help.
