Likely number of DBs on final roster: 8 or 9.
A pre-camp prediction on the final nine: Flowers, Carr, Leggett, Washington, Page, Pollard, Brown, McGraw, Colclough.

Just unacceptable
Any list that excludes Morgan is not fine by me

Flowers, Carr, Legget, Washington, Page, Pollard, Morgan, Brown, and Daniels
that’s 9 I would take to camp. McGraw, like Colclough, has had enough shots in this league (plus he already has a career to fall back on) and neither are difference makers. Daniels can make up for their special teams play

+1 Morgan would have to be dreadful in camp for him not to be included

Not to mention...
Daniels(piolis guy) will be there long before Colclough(herms guy).

Don't be shocked if Morgan is a Pioli casualty
They will judge Morgan the same way they have judged the rest of the young players.
Did he play well at his position?
Morgan didn’t get a lot of playing time, but he did get some. He had a lot of trouble making adjustments, which was OK with Herm because he saw something in him and he was going to be patient and bring him along. Incredibly doubtful that Pioli and Hailey will take that approach when its not “their” guy.
Can he play Special Teams?
Unlike Pollard who was a special teams star his first year, Morgan was expected to be a big contributor on special teams right off the bat and was a major disappointment in that respect last year.
With Mike Brown, Pollard and Page competing for the starting spot, Morgan is going to have to prove he can get it done on Special Teams this training camp and preseason. If he doesnt do better than last year, Pioli and Hailey will have no feelings of loyalty in keeping him around.

Agreed
Morgan had a chance to shine with the rest of Herm’s secondary last year and didn’t.
So we will see soon.

Agreed, DJ
Take a look at his college highlight reel on YouTube. It isn’t all that impressive. A lot of shoestring tackles. Fights off a couple blockers well. But not much pop for a safety on a highlight reel. He can hang on to the opportunities for interceptions for the most part. He better step it up big time at camp if he’s going to make the 53.
How...
was he suppose to make an impact on special teams when they never dressed him? One of the things they liked about him was his special teams play. He was a junior coming out of college so it should be expected that he would have a rookie “break in” year. I bet he makes the team.

Good point regarding his age
He’s still on the roster and management hasn’t been afraid to cut others. So he’s got a chance to get it done up north.

What do you mean never dressed him?
He played in 15 games.
And I’m not saying he won’t be a good player. I’m saying that he may be the odd man out.
With Mike Brown, Page and Pollard; the 4th Safety is going to HAVE to be a good Special Teamer. Thats drastically more important than how good a Safety he may or may not be.
I’m saying Pioli and Hailey don’t have the attachment to him of him being a guy they picked. So if they come down to the 4th Safety and its a choice between Morgan, who is underperforming because of his age or whatever the reason, or an older “no name” vet who IS a good Special Teamer (i.e. John McGraw), do not be shocked if they pick the Special Teamer.
Leave out McGraw, add Morgan
And then i agree with that group of DB’s. Strangely no one in power has asked me my opinion yet…
I find it interesting so many have it in for McGraw
He IS a good Special Teams player, which is primarily what you’re intersted in in a 3rd or 4th string Safety.
Right
McGraw > Morgan is we’re talking special teams. If we had the space to keep Morgan and McGraw then great but unfortunately we probably don’t.

Is 6 the maximum # of DB's that could be on the field for one Defensive play?
Dime package?
My thought is that with the age of the LB corp and the youth of the DB’s maybe less than average DB depth and an extra LB might be wise. Special teams in consideration of course

It's not about depth
Its about special teams.
DBs are faster guys that can get down field fast on kickoffs and are used to making open field tackles (theoretically). That’s why there are always so many DBs on the squad.
You could have quarter formations...
that have seven defensive backs. Usually, you only do that when the other team absolutely has to pass. Like a hail mary at the end of a half or game.

Different coverage "style" this season.
As I’ve said over and over, I don’t think the corners are going to have as much LB help in coverage. There will definitely (hopefully) be a style change in the secondary, and the guys we loved last season might not be set up for the task, and underachievers with better ball skills might come to the fore. If the pass rush can tip the scales in favor of the DBs, football intelligence and experience (Brown and Daniels) might prevail over youth and athleticism.
I find it hard to criticize Gretz here
He’s the one actually out watching practices.
Consistency is only a value if you are not a screw up.
My 2 cents
Carr, Flowers, Leggett, Brown, Page, Pollard, Washington are locks for the roster, in my opinion.
That leaves 2 DB spots…
McGraw’s special teams ability, and the fact that they brought him back from FA might give him an inside track.
I really have hopes for Morgan… but with only 1 roster spot left for DBs… will they go with another safety?
4 CB and 5 safeties seems, or 5 CB and 4 S….
Am I incorrect in saying you often have 3 or maybe 4 CB on the field at once, and rarely more than 2 S at a time?
IF that’s the case, I would guess they’d want to keep an extra CB instead of an extra S… unless you had a guy that could play both.
So the roster spot could come down to Morgan vs Colclough or Daniels.
As we’ve been saying all along, the best special teams performances in camp will surely be the tiebreaker, along with the #of spots at each position will make the difference.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see
We resigned Jeff Webb
I don’t think that is going to save McGraw if that’s all that is considered.
