Why move to Kansas City, Missouri?

I am considering moving to Kansas City, MO.  As a diehard Chiefs fan it is appealing but I was hoping some of you would offer why you live there.  There is a job opportunity but I know nothing about the city or surrounding areas.  Since I would be relocating my family, I am particularly interested in crime rates, edcuation, things to do such as lakes, etc.  How is the weather?  What is the terrain like?  Basically, what are the best things about living in Kansas City, Missouri?  Also, how close is Kansas City, KS?

I want to give a sincerece thank you to anyone who responds to this request.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

A Curveball :)

KC has many similarities to the Southwest and if you have a boat and want to fish plenty of sites for that. Many areas are multilingual and KCK as well as KC at large has a large Hispanic community.
If I assume, forgive me :)

KCMO public schools suck

But you can easily move across the state line or stay in MO over in Lee’s Summit. The murder rate is actually up right now while most major cities are seeing a decline in crime.

Private schools are good and it’s a great area to raise a family (despite aforementioned murder rate). The city is really divided (which is a good and bad thing).

by Joel Thorman on Jul 20, 2009 7:28 PM CDT reply actions

Do you know which neighborhoods you're considering?

KCMO can vary greatly depending on where you want to live. KCK is either very near (the area around KU Med is a hop-skip from the state line), or very far and up north. Either way, it’s a whole separate town and fairly industrial.

If by KCK you mean the suburbs on the Kansas side (Overland Park, Olathe, Lenexa, Leawood, etc. — Johnson County or Shawnee Mission as a whole), it depends on how close you want to be to KCMO. You can be literally across the street from it, or 30+ minutes away.

School-wise, some of the best public schools in the nation are in Johnson County (Olathe, Blue Valley or Shawnee Mission school districts). If you’re in KCMO, you’ll want to consider private schools — of which there are many great choices.

Weather is fantastic — KC is one of the few true four season areas (and by four seasons I mean the seasons change every three months, on cue). Summers are hot and humid; winters aren’t horrible, but there is the occasional ice storm or snow dump. Spring and fall are BEAUTIFUL. Weather comes in and out very fast and can be severe at times due to the plains and the jet stream. Either you’ll love or hate the severe weather when it happens — but it’s quick and powerful when it comes.

Happy to answer any questions, though I think you’ll find plenty of opinions around here. I’m a fourth-generation native who is now living away from KC, so I might have a slightly different point-of-view that will be helpful.

No Gates?

Gates is a KC staple of BBQ, and they don’t even get a mention?

“HI MAY I HELP YOU” as you get accosted by the counter people as soon as you enter the door, line or not, they expect you to be ready to order in a heartbeat upon entering. Reminiscent of the “soup nazi” from Seinfeld.

Heh. It's not that bad.

You could be living in Chicago. Believe me…I left that town because of the weather and didn’t realize how good it is in KC until I lived there (and in the Northeast).

And now that I’ll be living in the Southwest…well…I’ll have a whole other reason to think KC weather is phenomenal. ;)

Played football and wrestled against most schools on the MO side of the line. Mother and Father are KU fans and I am a Tiger, who’d of thunk! Served or country in TX, MS, and back to TX. And back to Home. Home for better or worse. Lakes are plentiful to live on our just boat. Ozarks are close for that Big Lake feel. Weather is weather, get up and go to work. Commuting to KCK for work is not a problem from anywhere in the 8+ counties that surround Arrowhead Stadium. Raytown is a Place just like most for better or worse.

move to Blue Springs on the Mo side

your not in the inner city the schools are above average for the area and the stadium is about 10 minutes down I-70, i havent lived there in the last few yrs(army) but everytime i go home Blue S is bigger and better

Plus Truman lake is nice and the ozarks are great, and the airport is pretty easy to get to. the weather is iffy ive seen all four seasons in one week but its no that bad

by dgoddard on Jul 20, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

Blue Springs...

is actually great. Although, if you want a podunk area with little to no crime, try Buckner. The little town is like the train that could. Last time I visited, it was growing exponentially. When I left, they had 1 stop light, 1 grocery store, 2 gas stations, and a few ma and pa shops. Last time I went back, they actually had a Sonic AND a Subway. Moooovin on up!! I grew up and spent 19 years in that little town. It was great, kind of like Cheers, where everybody knew your name. Only problem was, if you broke wind, somebody from across town would call to ask if you farted. Yeah, it was that small, population was less than 2 grand. It’s close to Blue Springs, Independence, and only a half-hour from the stadium…

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

For my money

Give me Brookside or Waldo as a neighborhood.
I actually lived in Quality Hill, and I LOVED being downtown… but that’s not for everyone.

Arthur Bryants or Oklahoma Joes’ for BBQ.

Great places to hang out in Westport, Plaza, Midtown/warehouse district, and power and light (if you are a tourist or want to pay too much for drinks)

The stadiums are great, and reasonably priced (esp. to see the Royals)

I love the “urban renewal” going on in KC… there are great areas of the city coming alive now, more so than in many many years.

I hate the suburbs (sorry, folks) especially Independence and Raytown… but BlueSprings/Lee’s Summit, OP and NKC have their value, I guess…

KC is a great city, and there’s plenty to do… if you get bored, KCI is an easy airport to fly in and out of, and KC is close enough to StL, and the other midwest cities (I recommend Des Moines, my current home!) for great weekend trips.

Insight from a Kansas City native who lived in ABQ for 4 years and then moved back to KC...

I was born and raised in Kansas City, I moved to Albuquerque in June 2004 and then back to KC in August 2008. I enjoyed Albuquerque at times, but it never felt like home and that is why I returned to KC. As I have lived in both places, I should be able to give you some more insight.

The first thing people will talk about is the humidity. If you’re not from the midwest, it can take a while to get used to, but it is only bothersome, in my opinion, in late July and August. I think you get used to it, just as I had to get used to the altitude (we used to play football and ultimate frisbee at a park off Academy in the high desert area and I could barely breathe sometimes) and the dry air (made my skin all dry and scratchy) in ABQ. The main difference is that in ABQ, it can be 100, but still reasonably okay if you find some shade. Also, the temp in ABQ drops during summer nights and the evenings are quite nice even in the hottest summer months. In the midwest, if it’s hot during the day, it will still be sticky and unpleasant at night most of the time. Again, I think people make a bigger deal out of this, but it will take some adjusting if you’re not used to humidity.

Secondly, from houses to gas prices (I found usually 15 to 20 cents cheaper in KC) to grocery stores, everything is cheaper in KC. You’ll find that your money goes farther here than in ABQ.

As someone said, KCMO schools do suck, but as I recall most ABQ public schools didn’t have great reputations eithier. There are, however, many great school districts in the suburbs around KC, as well as some great private schools in the city if you can afford it. I grew up in Lee’s Summit because my parents wanted us to attend the schools there. My brother, who currently lives in ABQ and is almost ready to start having kids is considering a move back to this area in a few years because he is worried about the ABQ schools.

Stuff to do? Well, no mountain bike riding in the Sandias or quick drives to Santa Fe or Durango for skiing and snow boarding. There are, however, quite a few lakes around the KC area, Longview, Jacoma, Smithville; as well as many lakes in southern MO like the lake of the ozarks and Truman lake. So, if you like water sports, fishing, camping, or hiking, there’s some good options. In general, there’s more to do as well. More concerts, theatre, festivals, fairs, nightlife, shopping, art exhibits, museums, activities for kids, etc.

There are also a lot more eating options here in my opinion. ABQ has some great Mexican and New Mexican restaurants, but there was never enough different styles of food there for my taste. Lottaburger is great though too. I do miss breakfast burritos from Frontier every once in a while, but that’s about it, however, my food tastes are more midwestern. I like green chilli, but not on sandwiches, eggs, spaghetti, candy, etc! Also, if you’ve only had barbeque from ABQ you are in for a gigantic treat. Unless things have changed since I left last year, all the barbeque joints in town were strictly Texas-style. Texas-style BBQ = the suck. I could eat Rudy’s meats under protest every once in a while, but only if I had a bottle of my ordered Jack Stack BBQ sauce on hand (Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbeque is my fave).

Sports-wise, you have more options as well. Chiefs, Royals, Wizards (soccer), T-Bones (minor leage baseball) a new minor league Hockey team, with MU, KU, and K-State nearby, as well as the hopes of getting a NBA or NHL franchise in the Sprint Center. I went to the Pit a few times for Lobos basketball and had a blast. There seemed to be alot of knowledgeable and enthusiastic college basketball fans in ABQ and they formed quite a crowd courtside. If that’s your thing, you can find it here as well at KU (as much as it pains me to say it as a MU fan, KU has the better atmosphere for now) and MU games. Also, football wise, in Albuquerque, you have to deal with a ton of Broncos fans and a ton of Cowboys fans. Is there 2 worse groups of people you can be forced to live with?

Well, I spent alot more time than I meant to typing this thing up, but hopefully this helps. Good luck!

Oh yeah! And everthing is green! No yards of rocks here!

by matteo on Jul 21, 2009 1:30 AM CDT reply actions

Thanks a bunch matteo!

I really appreciate the time you took to communicate all of these thoughts and certainly with your first hand experience living in ABQ and KCMO it is interesting and helpful. I am not native to NM and I do agree with almost all of your sentiments. Actually I had a Frontier breakfast burrito this morning. The opportunity to be around a lot more green is really appealing and the educational system is so poor and a very high crime rate per capita. It is my understanding that crime rates are quite high in KCMO as well but most of it is in the inner city and significantly reduced in the outer areas. Is this accurate?

Living amongst the Donkey and Dallas fans is a mess. I am raising two little Chiefs and what better way then to submurse them in Chiefland. The diversity of food and cuisines sounds awesome. I can handle the weather but in my opinion there is no better weather than the high desert. I love to be around some lakes that are surrounded by trees.

Again, thanks for the time in responding.

by casselreadychiefs on Jul 21, 2009 1:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Re: crime rates in KCMO

It really depends on your neighborhood. Check the KCPD website for more info — it led me to this site which can give you a glimpse by zip code of crimes over a 7, 14 or 30 day period.

http://www.crimereports.com/map?search=64106

Or this, for more community-wide info by patrol:

http://www.kcpd.org/kcpd2004/communitycrimedata.html

For what it’s worth, the Kansas suburbs aren’t crime-free by any means, but it’s more petty/property crime — and even that is rare.

Also, re: mountains — if you’re into biking or skiing, don’t forget that Colorado is next door — only about a 12-hour drive from KC to the Rockies. The surrounding area near KC is also much more hilly than people think — there are a couple of nearby man-made snow “mountains” for day-trip skiing in the winter.

One of my favorite things about KC

is the boulevard system. I have never seen another major urban area with such expansive boulevards. The great thing about boulevards is that due to the distance between the opposite-bound lanes (~1/4 to 1/2 a block or more) the major thoroughfare is allowed to proceed for miles without a traffic light; completely unheard of in most cities. On the Ward Parkway, for instance, you can drive from 47th street all the way to 95th street encountering only 6 or 7 lights (recalling from memory, been in TX too long). Recall that for each numbered street there is also a -terrace and you have covered roughly 100 blocks with only 6 or 7 stop lights.

Also, the space between the opposite-bound lanes is filled with what is essentially park space. Not many cities have done such a a good job of incorporating the natural landscape into the the planning. As such, KC boasts a large area of greenspace within the city.

I've been rapping for about seveteen years okay? I don't write my stuff anymore I just kick it from my head you know what I'm sayin? I can do that. No disrespect but that's how I am.

I love the area....

I live in Lee’s Scummit most of the year and love it. It’s a great alternative to being totally immersed in the city. I really like the area and as an avid traveller and roadtripper KC is “close” to everything. Mountains are close west, gulf close south, whatever suits you. I would input more but everyone else has covered everything so well.

My shirt was almost instantly wet, took me awhile to get used to it again.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

by bringbacktheglory on Jul 21, 2009 10:03 AM CDT reply actions

If the job pays the same or more

then there’s no reason not to live here. Like someone else said, your money goes pretty far here compared to other places.

However, there isn’t a whole lot to do in KC. There’s worlds of fun/oceans of fun, Royals, Chiefs, BBQ, Strouds (fantastic homestyle cooking), KC Power and Light, Sprint Center, Westport, Crown Center, the nascar/irl race track with Legends nearby… and that’s about it.

The “metro” is seriously spread out, so to get pretty much anywhere, it’s a 20 minute drive. You want to go downtown, it’s going to take 20 minutes. You want to go to the stadiums, it’s about 20 minutes. You want to go Village West, 20 minutes. Casino, 20 minutes. I’ve live in 3 different places in KC, North and South, and everytime I want to go anywhere, it takes damn near 20 minutes. The public transit is nonexistant, so don’t expect to take a bus anywhere.

There’s plenty of bars, churches, and eateries. A few walking/biking trails. Whoever said to stay south of the river is retarded.

My address is and always has been KC, MO. I didn’t live in grandview. Pardon me if I’m not quite enough full of myself to live in Johnson county, but I’ll never live in Kansas. I loathe the fact I work in KS.

You’re defending Brookside/Waldo area? Please… I lived there too. Hey, how could we make living somewhere as inconvienient as possible while being on the edge of a slum? Raise our home prices to ridiculous levels, that’s how! Talk about your typical anglo-saxon neighborhood. Homes there are overpriced and unless you can dump a ton of money into it (or the previous owner did), it’s a P.o.S. It’s like driving a Tercel with $1000 wheels; I’ll laugh at you when I drive by in my Lexus, with my sensibly priced home(s) that have a garage to keep it in.

I’ll never understand why people buy into the “hot” neighborhood bullshit. Set the trend, don’t follow sheeple.

You mean a neighborhhod with character?

That wasn’t slapped together in the last 5-10 years using shoddy materials and piss poor craftsmanship. Homes with absolutly zero soul in neighborhoods with even less? Barron lots with no trees.

I don’t know how homes in the $150-250k range can be considered expensive. If thats expensive then you certainly get what you pay for. Solid built homes with character, no crime (the city council knows what neighborhood matters and applies resources accordingly), no toothless tweekers, and easy access to all relavent parts of the city. I work in the burbs but come the weekend the old Bimmer gets parked in the garage and doesn’t come out till Monday morning. I enjoy being able to walk to the city;s premier art festivals, or ride my bike to the market for food, or bike to Brookside, Waldo, or Plaza (if I was a bigger d-bag) bars for a drink. If I want to go further than that, the bus comes through the BKS every 20 minutes.

KC Lakes

I think you are getting pretty good advice from everyone on here. I pretty much agree with everything I’ve read on here so far.

I grew up in Blue Springs (Lake Tapawingo, specifically)…which is a small residential lake in that suburb. Yes, there are many public lakes around the are which give the big lake appeal (Jacomo, Smithville, etc.) Tapawingo is very small (only 4 miles of road around it)…However, there was nothing better than growing up in a lake community. I absolutely loved growing up there. It is much smaller, so you are somewhat limited on what you can do (no waverunners are allowed because of the size). Granted the houses are packed in like sardines, but the view from your backyard are amazing and the community is very close to each other and very neighborly. The suburbs on the East side of the city have residential lake communities all over the place….Lake Lotowana, Lake Winnebago, Raintree, Lakewood (all around the Blue Springs/ Lee’s Summit area). Honestly, if you are going to move to the Missouri side, I concur that this general area is the place to be. Lee’s Summit has developed like gangbusters over the years, and so has Blue Springs to some degree. Their school systems are both above adequate. Otherwise, you can move to Johnson County on the KS side. It’s very nice and very good schools…However, the cost of living is a little higher over there. This is just my two cents.

I carry a lighter around in my pocket wherever I go...I don't smoke, I just really like certain songs.

Noticeable difference in MO roads & services compared to KS

The Kansas suburbs have the best schools, facilities etc, unfortunately it is totally white bread lifestyle wise. Grew up on 95th & Metcalf, experienced most of what KC has to offer. Lived in Brookside on the MO side during and after college, a lot more fun, but as I said, street & services were noticeably shabbier.

Hyde park is coming back but is still pretty ghetto. But you can get a 3 story historic landmark home for $150,000; a lot of the hipsters are moving there and renovating, probably a good investment oppty if you have the means.

We have awesome Mexican food as well and a whole lot more, only weakness is seafood.

MUST EAT AT STROUD’S if you do nothing else before you die in KC.

I moved to KC two years ago (from Edmonton, Canada) and I enjoy it here a lot.

Weather – like someone said above, it’s a great “four season” town. Fall is the best time of year IMO – nothing beats watching football and barbecuing on a crisp, clear November afternoon.

Food – there are great restaurants everywhere, and it’s not just BBQ. There are tons of great ethnic places for Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Ethiopian, pretty much whatever you want. Mostly very reasonably priced as well (if you like Indian, India Palace in Overland Park has some of the best curry I’ve ever had). Also some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had (although it probably doesn’t compare to Albuquerque).

Sports – the Royals and the Chiefs might not be the most successful teams, but they’re still always fun to go see. The new Royals stadium in particular has to be seen to be believed. Even my wife likes going, and she hates baseball. My only complaint is that the stadiums are way the hell out in the boonies, and there’s no public transportation (literally none) to get there, so no way to avoid the traffic.

Living conditions – where you live probably depends on what you’re looking for – Missouri has the “funkier”/more interesting areas of town, but it also has crapholes like Independence. The Kansas side is more boring, but would probably be a better place for raising a family (especially in Johnson county). There’s a LOT of variance in neighborhoods, so shop around before you pick one.

Entertainment/things to do – there’s tons of interesting stuff to see and do, especially in and around downtown. There’s several world class museums, the Plaza, lots of parks, basically whatever you’re looking for. Lots of concerts and live music as well.

First we have 2 people....

That have lived in both Albequerque and KC and now, even more odd, two from Edmonton/KC. Im originally from Edmonton. I’m in KC most of the year now but for work am still in Edmonton for a few months of the year.

Lived in Tucson for a while when I was 20....

I was born and raised here though, I live in dreaded Raytown currently. I was born in Northeast Kansas City at St. John and Hardesty, moved to Blue Springs (lived right by Daniel Young Elementary), lived in Independence at my grandma’s after my parents divorced, then moved to Greenwood (moved again inside of Greenwood from Gambrell St. to W. Elm St. after my dad and step-mom divorced), then finally wound up here in Raytown. I would say that Raytown isn’t a “bad” place to live, it’s kind of been forgotten and that’s why I believe it’s well on it’s way to hell—but hey, we did get a new Hy-Vee and they’re currently building a Wal-Mart Supercenter and what’s supposed to be Home Depot where the old Hy-Vee was, I know, it still sucks but anyways…..I would say that if you were going to choose, then pass up Raytown and most of Independence, unless of course you like boring and/or aging suburban areas. But yeah, parts of KCMO and the metro are pretty cool, just depends on what type of area you want to live in, there are countless different communities and neighborhoods to choose from.

Some other outdoor stuff...

surprised no one mentioned that both KS and MO have national reputations for producing huge whitetails. Last I knew KS had around 1/5th of the racks in the Bass Pro traveling display. MO had the former World record non-typical. There is also excellent waterfowling and upland gamebird (pheasant, bobwhite quail, prairie chicken) hunting very short drives from KC. South Dakota pheasant fields are only 5-6 hours away and places in Nebraska are even closer. Some places in KS, it is entirely possible to shoot a limit of pheasants in the morning and a limit of ducks in the afternoon. Turkey populations are absolutely outrageous in places in both states. There is both a Bass Pro and a Cabela’s store on the KS side.

Trout Streams: believe it or not, MO has some extremely good ones. Bennett Springs and Montauk are only a couple of hours away. State Record rainbow is like 30+ pounds and the brown record is around 27 I believe. Check out these sites if your interested:

Non-outdoors: in addition to everything else, KC has several casinos if you are into that.

Grandview and Olathe are the places I am familiar with.

They are okay but they are both low income neighborhoods that i am used to. I would prefer to be closer to D/T personally. Also i don’t have the responsibility of children or a significant other so that also could affect my views in comparison to yours. (again my point of view is towards the two specific neighborhoods in said suburbs).

I have to admit...

I grew up in KC and I couldn’t get out fast enough. In all honesty, it’s a good place. It has a lot to offer including affordable living, good schools and amazing bbq. When most of the radio stations decided to go country and my girl at the time started trying to dress me in wranglers and ropers, I had to punt.

I happily call San Diego my home now. My only regret is that I only get to see the Chiefs once a year.

The best decision you'll ever make...

I was born and practically raised(15 years) in Liberty,MO thats only a half hour away from KC. My parents and brother all moved to KC late 80’s(same time as marty…coincidental i guess) but they came from the new england area..let me tell ya once you live there its hard to ever leave. Honestly since youre a Chiefs fan I’d prefer that you’d live aound Blue springs,Liberty, kearney or excelsior springs.those are nice suttle towns with good school districts. Hope you decide to move out there!
