By now all of us have heard about the fat contract that Matt Cassel just signed recently. Some of us think it's a step in the right direction. Others think the signing was premature and we should have waited until the end of the '09 season. I have mixed feelings about this contract. But for the most part, I like this deal. Here's why:
*Cassel came here because of Pioli. Obviously Pioli sees something in him that he likes.
*Once Cassel settled into the starting role last year, he looked like a stud. At the beginning of the season he held onto the ball too long and he absorbed quite a few sacks. But as he progressed through the season he only got better. He made better reads. He improved his decision making. At the end of the year he looked solid. He had some pretty good numbers (some believe that he should have went to the Pro Bowl). He looked like a franchise quarterback, which is something the Chiefs have been lacking for a while now.
*He's gettting a lot of praise from not only his teammates but also his coaches. Todd Haley seems to love this kid. He even said that if he had 53 Matt Cassels, he would be excited. Haley said that Cassel is constantly in his office asking him questions and just trying to soak up everything he can. He's trying to assume a leadership role. He seems to be all about football. Last year we rarely heard anything about Brodie going into Herm's office and bugging him with ideas and asking for his "advice". True leaders want to do anything they can to help their team win. That's what seems to drive Cassel - the desire to win.
*I'm going to bring it back to Pioli again. If Pioli is really the juggernaut personnel man that many think he is, then it's hard not to trust his judgement. His good decisions so far have outweighed his "bad" decisions (I can't think of any "bad" decisions myself but if anyone else think so chime in).
Do I think signing Cassel to a deal like this is a big risk? Absolutely. It's a huge risk. Last year was his first time as a starting quarterback in 8 years. He has one of the best WR corps in the league at his disposal, which KC does not have. Bill Belichick was his head coach last year. He's the best coach in the league whereas Haley is an unknown at this point.
But if Cassel is as good as advertised then I won't have any reason to bitch about his contract. If he delivers us a better record and even a trip to the playoffs then I'll be flat out content.
What do you guys think?
