Cassel QB of the future

I think most knew Matt Cassel would be the starting QB with Pioli giving up a second rounder and with the money he was getting. Cassel has had good coaching in Collage and in the NFL, he has had years to learn from one of the best Qb's out there, so here is to many great years with the Chiefs.

But a good question is what does this mean for Tyler Thigpen, he will be our back-up this year but after that. For a QB that didn't have the coaching that Cassel had and didn't have the luxury of working with Tom Brady, our 3rd string QB came in and did very good job with what he had work with. If Thigpen takes this time learning from Cassel and to practice it will do him wonders.

If Thigpen does well in the preseason and if they use him during the season for some special plays and I think they will, there will be some teams that will be looking at him. Would I love to have Thigpen as our back-up for a long time yes, but I think Pioli has his QB and if he shows what Thigpen can do, it could bring him some draft picks that he loves so much. It will be interesting to see what does happen, if Thigpen is smart and uses this time and not let it hurt his ego it could work our well for him and the team. We know Pioli is very smart and will do what is best for the team.

Yep

He’s under contract through 2010 so it’ll be interesting to see if we can bump his value up to a 3rd rounder or so.

I hope..........

T.Thigpen gets the chance to start, if not for us in a few years then someone else. I hate seeing players sit on the bench that could be good talent if in the right situation. Bones could be a defense’s worst nightmare with alittle more knowledge, and work on his accuracy.

Tyler would fit perfectly somewhere in the NFC :)

I think this year will be good for Thigpen

getting the coaching and time to practice, maybe more than one team will be interested in him.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

Thigpen

to the Vikings for a 3rd after Favre plays one year and “retires” how sweet would that be..

I think people would be surprised at how little interest Thigpen gets

from other teams. Remember, they would probably have to switch to a spread offense in order for him to be successful. Remember how horrible Thigpen was in a pro-style offense? He can be effective given the right circumstances but I don’t think too many teams view him as a starter.

by jonnyu on Jul 16, 2009 11:07 AM CDT reply actions

Why

Is it that people think Bones can only be successful in the spead offense? He is 24 or 5 year’s old, do you think that he cant learn to take a snap from under the center? I for one think that Bones could be a great QB if the right people are brought in to help him, also he will have Cassel’s work ethic as a example of how you should prepare for the game, both mentally and physically. For someone to judge him by last years performance and say he can only play spread offense is a weak arguement IMO.
Im pretty sure that if Cassel would have been playing for us last year, he wouldnt be getting a 6 year contract like he is now. He stats would have been alot worse, and he would have been sacked 60 times.
Bones has time to improve his game…………Cassel doesnt, it’s all or nothing this year. Especially now that he has been signed to a 6 year contracted, he must perform…….. now, i just hope he’s not another Grbac or Bono………..both were good QB’s but not good enough to get playoff wins or a Super-Bowl title.

I don't see it

Yes Thigpen brought some spark to our team but the truth is he took over after Damon Huard, not exactly huge shoes to fill. Also he never seemed to step into the role as a leader of the team. And at the end of the day he only won one game which is unacceptable for a starting qb in this league. You can blame a poor staff or a crappy team but he just didn’t do what needed to be done. More than likely his NFL career will be over in three years and he’ll either move to the UFL, CFL, or go coach some where. The reason for the short career, hes a system guy. He has to be in a certain style of play or he will just fall to pieces.

OMG

Bone cant win the games by himself it takes team effort and good coaching ………which i might add, we didnt have last year. He was good enough for T.G to say he wanted him back as starter, so he must have shown something. You say he is a system QB, and that why he will only last 3 years in the league………..come on now you can do better than that, dig alittle deeper for the B.S next time.
T.Brady is a system, and so are alot of other QB’s, thats how you choose a QB to run your team, by which system he has run in college or what system he would be good at when running your team.

by CPT.Caveman on Jul 18, 2009 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

listen

first quality QB’s win with crappy teams best example Marino, no supporting cast of any quality and he still won more 1 game a season.
Tony G. saying he wants thiggy as the starter, Tony had been in Kc long enough to know that 90% of the time our QB’s suck. He was just stating the obvious.
Brady is more than a system QB. If you took him and out him in any other system he would still produce. He would be just as successful any where else, because he is a quality QB and can win more than 1 game a year even without a strong cast around him.

wait a minute

The Dolphins were in the Super Bowl the year before Marino got there. He stepped into a great situation of a pretty darn good team that just needed a franchise QB again. He also had a coach who knew how to coach…like winning more games than anyone else ever has. Better try another example.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

clear things up

i should have mention i was speaking about the 90’s dolphins
your right on that his rookie year he was loaded with a strong team
but as the years went on he was the only real stand out player

that's a little more accurate

As much as I have to say I was a Don Shula fan, I thought he had kind of lost it the last few years he was there. Seemed the game had just passed him by and as you say, they were not bringing in good new players to build it all up. Marino was also such a good decision maker that he kept the O-line from racking up sack statistics. If no one was open he could get rid of it so fast it wasn’t even funny…or if they were open as well. I’m almost ashamed to admit I followed the Dolphins much more closely than the Chiefs from the mid-70’s to the mid-90’s. Ah well, I’m fully back in the clutches of the Red and Gold now.

by Zodeman on Jul 18, 2009 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

right on

i followed the dolphins in the 90’s and i would always hope they could hold it together an entire year so Marino could get his ring but i was always disappointed. Thinking that was bad is nothing compared to watching the Chiefs last year. Hopefully this new regime can make this team true contenders.

well you can't compare Thigpen to Marino in the 90's

Thigpen was our 3rd stringer last year, Marino had a lot of years of experience by that time.

Hey

Put T.Brady on the Falcons when they had M.Vick as QB……… is he going to be able to do the plays that were disigned for Vick? That system of offense was designed for Vick and not for someone like Brady, who couldnt run it. I also dont care what you say about a good QB being able to take a team to the playoff’s or the super-bowl no matter how good the other players are. Without a good o-line no one is going to the Super-Bowl even if the QB is T.Brady.

by CPT.Caveman on Jul 18, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

could you show me

where i said go to the playoffs or the super bowl
i said win more than 1 game a year which is all thigpen was able to do

Before you build yourself up, you must tear somebody else down.

by Zennedy on Jul 18, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Could you show me

1 game brady won last year? Oops thats right his knee was torn up by Pollard because his o-line was not blocking well. So the great QB T.Brady didnt win one last year, so it doesnt matter how good he was he couldnt win 1 game. Your right you didnt say playoffs or super bowl……….my mistake, you said more than 1 game, and i just proved you wrong!

by CPT.Caveman on Jul 18, 2009 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

ok

as a starter brady was 1-0 last year, just the same amount of wins as thigpen
i think things are getting a little too personal for some reason
we started off talking about thigpen and now your trying to prove me wrong with a passion
its cool when thigpen gets the start i’ll be the first to say way to go

Sorry dude.........

What im trying to say is that it doesnt matter how great the QB is if he is injured like T.Brady was in the first game,he’s not going to be able to carry the team with his abilities or talent if he gets hurt because of a sub-par o-line.

by CPT.Caveman on Jul 19, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I really

Dont think we would have won many more games last year with a better QB. I dont think that was the reason we lost so many last year, maybe im crazy but i think bad play calling in the second half of games, and our defense is what lost us so many last year. How many game do you think we would have won last year with M.Cassel, remember he got sacked 46 time’s in N.E.

by CPT.Caveman on Jul 19, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Cavey

I don’t know of a single person here that was not impressed with Tyler Thigpen last year. He is a gamer and exciting and will play for the Chiefs in the upcoming season. Chiefs fans will cheer for him on the field and when Cassel struggles will call for him to come in and save the day! So :)

Hey guys

Dont get me wrong im getting more excited all the time about M.Cassel, and i hope he’s our QB for year’s to come. I hope he is as good as everyone thinks, but we dont know yet, so im not going to be 100% behind him until he show’s it on the field.
I do want to say that i feel like Bones got the shaft in this deal, and that i would have been more than willing to give him a couple of years to improve and grow as a QB. Which i might add that he would still be younger than Cassel is today.
I dont know if i could have watched the chiefs games last year if he wouldnt have been starting, i know that sounds crazy, but he was the main reason i kept watching in the second half of the season.
I just feel sorry for Bones, and it pisses me off when people say he can only play the spread offense, without taking into consideration that he’s only 24 or 5 year old. I also want to say that i sometimes type before thinking about what comes out my mouth, and im sorry if it comes accrossed as personal, i truely dont mean it that way.

i agree

Some people just aren’t seeing That for a QB that was a 3rd stringer coming off the bench Thigpen didn’t good enough to win some games if we just had coaching and a defense. Give him some time to work and he could be very good. In the history of the league some very good QB’s didn’t do very well their first year.

Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!
