Kansas City Chiefs Sign Matt Cassel to a Long-Term Contract
I thought this might be coming today.
The Chiefs have signed Cassel to a multi-year contract, a source told The Star on Tuesday. Terms of the deal have not been released, although the team is expected to announce the deal today.
July 15th was the deadline for teams to sign franchise players to long-term contracts. The language in the current CBA indicates "the player may sign only a one year player contract with his prior club for that season" after July 15th. Inquiries to the league office regarding whether Cassel's "prior club" is Kansas City or New England weren't immediately returned.
The Chiefs are expected to announce the deal today according to Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star.
It's over! Now let's see if Michael Lombardi's report that it includes $36 million guaranteed over six years is correct.
More to come...

Still waters run deep
Just because there’s no news out of Arrowhead Drive doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on. The Pioli machine just keeps on plugging away.
Well
that’s one less thing the so called experts have to talk about now. I’m glad it is done and over with. We don’t hear any noise coming out of there because the machine at Arrowhead is still running smooth and quite.
Yeah, let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys! ...

Good
I had actually thought they might push this off into the season, but apparently they believe he is more than just a product of the NE “system” and will become a product of the KC “system”.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.
Finally!
No more of this “Maybe KC doesn’t really think he’s the long-term answer” crap talk.
+1

Now, if we can just get all our draft picks signed in time for camp…

Wait, real news!?!?
When will he hear the terms?
New Stiga table?!?! Return of the Brookside Pongers???
I was...
just thinking the same thing. Before we had a bunch of money to spend still, he was counting around 14 to 15 million on the cap. Now that figure will probably drop by 1/2 I’m guessing. So that shoots a bunch of money into the books to sign all the draft picks and still have money to make a move or two to shore up some weaknesses (lord knows we have them).
I wouldn't be surpirsed
if “The Don” announces other signings along with this. Seeing as how th eteam seems to like to control the media coverage and chatter and keep it to a minimum, I could see this being paired with an announcment that Jackson or some other picks have also signed.
D-Bowe, Mark Bradley, Bobby Engram and Turtle. Four Chiefs WRers. 4 Pro Bowlers.
Bought Time!
This is excellent news for us. Cassel in my opinion is proven and will show all naysayers that he can be elite in this league. Welcome to the Matt Cassel era!

If the O/U is $36 mil guaranteed
I’m taking the under.
People mistakenly thought that Cassel and his agent had all the leverage, while forgetting about this.
He was looking at being a restricted FA in 2010, so the Chiefs could have tendered him for around $3 mil.
I am glad we got it done, just hope that we put as much $$ as possible on this years cap. That’d be done with ROSTER not signing bonuses, and a large salary this season.
Now that this is done, I wouldn't be surprised to
hear about a couple of “bargain basement” signings of individuals who may be of help to the team. That, of course, in addition to the signing of rookie contracts.
Oh they still get to covet him.... twice a year. Hey McDaniels Hahahaha......
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
I am glad to see this
Don’t get me wrong but Matt Cassel is not worth paying 14 million dollars to this season, proven or unproven. This is a nice move and the fact that it is the day before the cut off to sign a franchise player tells me that there was a contract in place but Pioli was upset that it was leaked.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
