From what we hear, Cottam, a 2008 third-round pick by the Chiefs and the favorite to capture the job, struggled mightily during offseason workouts, frequently dropping catchable passes. His failure to seize the opportunity has opened the door for others — like veterans Sean Ryan and Tony Curtis and seventh-round rookie Jake O’Connell — to enter the mix for starting duties.

Although the Chiefs aren’t expected to utilize their tight ends as receivers very often, the offense would be lacking without a skilled pass catcher at that spot. Thus far, Cottam has "dropped the ball."

H/T to NJChiefsfan in the FanShots from about noon today

I got your back NJ, unlike primetime. :)

I don't have religion, I have Baduizm...and Billie Holiday.
Erykah Badu is on notice. Amel Larrieux is catching up to you quickly. Let me see what you got, Erykah.

A lot of drops?

I really hadn’t gotten that impression from what I’ve read. Sounded like everyone has had some drops so far. And declaring the position an open competition was a surprise? Maybe if you haven’t been paying attention. Ah…not a lot of deep thought in that little blurb as far as I can see. I do think it will be interesting to see how this plays out. We have enough competition there to get a pretty decent player in the end.

Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Overblown?

Bowe drops passes too but no one’s writing him off! Haven’t even gotten to River Falls yet! I’m rooting for either Cottam or Crabtree——-the big guy or the underdog. ahhh—-Zodeman was thinking along the same lines I see—-just came up. Anyway seems like Crabtree did as well as Jake O’Connell, and on the same team and He’s taller.

Isn't...

…Tony Curtis a little old to be playing in the NFL? Maybe we can get Jack Lemmon to play center.

What I find interesting about Cottam...

is that the previous regime thought he’d be an amazing blocker because of his size and could maybe develop as a receiver. Haley seems to think the opposite, that Cottam is a nice, big target in the passing game but will have balance issues when blocking because he is so tall. I remember he said once that Cottam fell down once or twice in practice because of it. So I really don’t know what to think about the guy. He seems to have all kinds of athleticism and potential. I just hope he can translate it into football skills.

Turn Cottam into a tackle..

Worked out well for Jason Peters and Buffalo

I thought this might happen

Listening to Haley talk about the TE’s it seemed he wasn’t too impressed with Cottam. He kept talking about a good competition at TE. I am not saying Cottam is screwed but I think he is on the mat at this point.

Didn't the last folks in charge

say Cottam had “good hands?” I never really bought that since he had to have reconstructive surgery on his hand after a car accident… or something like that?

Bah, it’s too early.

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

Exactly. Its still too early to tell.

Cottam still may turn out to be a starter. He has plenty of time to work on his ball skills at camp as long as the rest of his game is solid. he is a big boy and I thought he did a good job blocking last season.
It would be nice to have a 6’7" target to throw to in the endzone. If he doesn’t make it, Vrabel has shown to be pretty effective as a TE in scoring situations.

There was a guy like that on the team a couple years back.

his name was Allen something? Or something Allen? I dunno… he seemed like a decent player though. Not sure why they let him go. ..
