Bury the hatchet from our backs.

With all the "news" coming about our once great tight end Tony Gonzalez, I thought it was due time to say our farewells and goodbyes. Tony is no longer a Chief, and it's a sore subject that people seem pretty divided on. It seems as though half of the Chiefs fans want to try and forget him and move on, while the other half want to wish him luck (but not TOO much to keep the 2nd round pick higher) and move on. Bottom line: Everyone wants to move on.

Star-divide

Born in Minnesota and raised in California, Gozalez was very althletic. In high school he lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. On the offensive side of the ball and Huntington Beach High, Gonzalez recorded 62 passes for 945 yards and 13 touchdowns his senior year, helping to earn him a spot as a first-team All-American at tight end and linebacker. He was also the 1 of the states Althlete of the Year (there was a tie that year, so the award was shared).

Upon graduation, Gonzalez decided to attend University of California Berkley (or Cal) where he again played more than one sport; football and basketball. During his junior year, Gonzalez's head coach was future NFL head coach Steve Marriuchi. What isn't surprising when given that fact, is that was Gonzalez's most producting college season where he caught 92 passes for 982 yards and 23 touchdowns. Those stats got him named to yet another All-American team, as well as the All-Pac10 team. It was after this season that he decided to declare for the NFL draft and forgo his final year of college eligibility.

In 1997 the Chiefs wanted to draft Gonzalez, but with their 18th pick it didn't seem likely he would be available. So they traded up with the Houston Oilers to get him at the 13th pick. After that day, he went on to break every meaningful Chiefs and NFL records set for tight ends, until the day he was traded away on April 23rd, 2009.

In my mind, Gonzalez was never a strong leader. His words didn't always vibe with his actions. He said he wanted to be a Chief to the media, and then would run to the management asking to be moved elsewhere. Will I miss Tony Gonzalez and his stats and great hands and YAC on the field? Absolutely. Will I miss the attitude he showed at this teams darkest time in the locker room? A resounding NO.

Near the end of his last two seasons with the Chiefs, Gonzalez was increasingly trite, unhappy, and vocal about it to whomever would listen. Instead of trying to make his TEAM better, he wanted to go to a better team. To that I say "So long." When you hear/read quotes from guys like Mike Goff saying:

"I understand what kind of talent is on this team and the possibilities this team has.   And to have a chance to be on the ground floor of something special, that’s exiting. "

you can't help but wonder what exactly happened to make Tony so unhappy here. I kind of take it a little personal. Maybe Kansas City didn't offer him enough in terms of culture, nightlife, relaxation, whatever. I like to see it when guys move to the city of the team they play for. Guys like Trent Green, who staying in Kansas City in the offseason because he liked it here. Guys like Jared Allen who did their damndest to embrace what the area had to offer in terms of fun. Those guys are leaders, and those types of guys make things happen by not quitting. Guys like Branden Albert who are doing everything in their power to become a dominant force at their respective positions. Those are the types of guys who show the young guys how to not give up and play 4 quarters of football. Tony Gonzalez isn't that type of guy.

He wasn't buying into what Scott Pioli and Todd Haley are trying to do here. I'm of the opinion that, if he had bought into it, he would still be here. However, I am in agreeance with Pioli that if there were ever a time to let Gonzalez go, it was now. His value was still high (obviously), while his love for the team was dwindling. You can't have guys criticizing the organization you're trying to rebuild. I think if other veterans like Goff and Cassel (is there such as thing as a rookie-vet? I dunno) can come to realize that the talent here is good enough to want to work at it and win, then perhaps Gonzalez will have a made a mistake.

Gonzalez also said on numerous occasions that the Chiefs had the talent, he just didn't know why they couldn't make it over the hump to pull off some more wins. But then he wants to leave, knowing full well that "talent" he was talking about was going to come to maturity in a short time. In my mind, he slapped everyone on the team in the face and told them they suck when he sought out his own trade, as well as making himself a liar in the process. Just because he was quiet about it and left peacefully with a [fake] tear in his eye doesn't mean a damn thing. He stabbed the entire Chiefs organization, as well as Chiefs fans in the back by taking the easy road out of town, instead of helping a young team mature and get better. That to me shows how weak his will is.

He's gone Chiefs fans. His production will be missed, but his ego and two-faced ways will not. Good luck, and stay the hell out of our news ;)

The guy is gone and that is what he has wanted for the last few years. He is looking out for his years after football. More exposure in Hotlanta.

Good Write-Up

He was a great player, but I have to wonder if he was a good teammate the last couple of years. Certainly not a leader. From his interview posted on here the other day, I’m glad he’s gone. If you ain’t with us you’re against us. And I"m also having some serious doubts about Waters now too, because it sounds like he and Tony were having a pity party for themselves ever since last fall sometime. Pro Bowls aside, we are better off with young guys who want to be part of something here than we are with great players who don’t give a crap anymore.

Goff didn't CHOOSE to come to KC

as much as he makes it sound like he did. He came here because it was really the best shot he was going to get. Beggars can’t be choosers and, believe me, he wasn’t that high on everyone else’s FA list.

Good job Saint Rec

As far as Goff someone said a few days ago that Goff played well in the type of O we will play this year.
The Chargers changed their O scheme and it did not suit Goffs’ style as much.

Also

I looked everywhere, maybe I’m just mistaken, But I remember after mandatory OTA’s haley was recognizing peoples hard work and singled out Goff as an example for the rest of this team.

He doesn’t have to say what he says to play here. I think he is genuine and can only hope that this is the fresh start he needed to end his career on a positive note.

I was the one who said it.

But I just picked it up a month or three ago from a REAL football fan, here on AP.

Another encouraging thing to hear about Goff was the 1-on-1 drills, when Jackson and Magee were doin’ pretty good, unTIL they faced Goff, who shut ’em down effectively.

If Goff produces the way I think he will, his departure from San Diego will say more about how out-of-whack THEY are. I think we all believe that LT’s struggles were a SYMPTOM, rather than a cause. I’m starting to believe that Goff’s struggles were ALSO a symptom, rather than a cause.

If you played as hard as Tony did only to lose upwards of ten games a year you’d be frustrated too, regardless of what “TEAM.” It’s hard to imagine what else he could have done to make said “TEAM” better.

Does it really matter?

Yeah he did a LOT to make the team better but ultimately it didn’t work out. He was, however, compensated better than any TE to ever play the game. Feel bad? Not really. That’s the way it goes sometimes.

Not this 5%-er.

I’ve been on the fringes on the Tony G thing for years. Great talent. Not a winner. If he can do for Atlanta what Sharpe did for the Ravens, then good for him. But, like Sharpe, Tony’s going to make business decisions rather than just knock people off their pins at need. They’re hiring him for his receptions and not his blocking, and they’re paying top dollar for the privilege.

The Chiefs will miss Tony G the same as the Giants missed Jeremy Shockey.

by hmills110 on Jul 11, 2009 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Uh. Maybe BLOCK better?

Half the time he whiffed. The other half of the time, he was called for holding. TG never had great blocking technique, which is FINE for a team that can get it done without solid TE support in the run game.

The other side of losing upwards of 10 games a year is that when you’re paying a TE that much money and NOT winning, it’s time to change your salary profile! Like it or not, the star players have a BIG part of the responsibility for W’s, and when you’re not getting the W’s, the team becomes a mere vehicle for that star player’s stats and HOF hopes.

If I’d been in TG’s shoes and really wanted to WIN more than to be rich, I’d’ve given up some salary for another talented wideout or o-lineman. I STILL look at Reggie White’s move to Green Bay for a pay cut, because he REALLY wanted a ring. Tony’s always been me-first in the contracts department, and if that attitude will also bring a ring to him in Atlanta, then more power to him. But let’s not kid ourselves about what a team player he was.

you mean Team Tony? Sorry, lost a lot of respect for Tony as a professional when he opened his big mouth about wanting a trade in the middle of disaster. This is how a multi-millionaire is suppose to act towards the team and people who paid his way, and paid him handsomely. Honored him and gave him the key to the city. what a _ussy. We are building a new team with the right people and the right attitude in order to be successful and WIN games. PIOLI waited to long. At this point, I’d say …more proof that PIOLI is genius!!

I'm in the middle

I’m not going to bash a player I expect to enter the H.O.F. as a Chief, but on the other hand I don’t need weekly updates about how happy he is in Atlanta. I recall how alot of nasty things came out after D.T. passed and some were down on him…but after a while the bad stuff was forgotten and he was again a beloved Chief. Basically if your not a Chief then Who the hell cares what you do. Yes I’ll keep track of the draft position we get, and when the H.O.F. calls and T.G is in, but as long as he is playing for another team I’ll pass on the updates. I thank AP for keeping tabs for me, but right now this seems it is best for everyone just to let this topic go and look ahead to those that proudly wear “Arrow Head red”. Chief fan forever!

I know whatcha mean about DT.

It was sad when Gun’s continued reaching for a great 4-3 DE stuck DT in the trenches. The last couple years must’ve been TOUGH on #58. I think he might’ve done more to get a package deal for Neil Smith AND him. About the only negative. He got his money, but lost a great LDE who set him up all day long to close the deal from the weakside. And worse, since he took the $$ for two players, got himself stuck playing defensive end, when his true calling was closing the deal as the 5th man up the field beside a great 4-man rush.

Man...........

This team was going in a different direction,by letting all the vets go. Which IMO went to far at the time, and did nothing to improve the teams record………….2-14………6-24 over the last 2 years. I dont blame him for wanting off a team that was falling apart.T.G is at the end of his career, he might have 2 or 3 more years if he is lucky.
This team was letting all the vets go so T.G ask the team to get what they could for him. If you look at the ranking of tight ends T.G should be #1 but he is not because he has never won a Super-Bowl.
I do think if he had stayed with the Chiefs, that we could have had about as good a chance as the falcons, maybe not this year but next year. So i dont hold it against him,and i dont think he ever undermined the team ….lol Dinomight you say he was abandoning a sinking ship, i say the ship had sunk, you say he was a egotistical maniac, i say lay off the crack J.J.

Your opinion, exspressed in hindsight, is pure genius.....

I don’t blame Mr Gonzales for wanting off a losing team, or away from a losing organization. For all those right reasons; 2 or 3 years away from retirement, poor management that let the vets go, and never having the #1 ranking because of it all. But he has a CONTRACT. AND EVIDENTLY NO KAHUNNA’S And this team has a better chance of post season success with Mr Gonzales absent. You heard me right. http://www.sbnation.com/users/Magua831/blog and read the " Curtis working toward bigger role with Chiefs" in our own ARROWHEAD PRIDE today ……you can read my comments, OPINION, and further elaboration on Mr Gonzales there. The point i am trying to make is; CONTRACT and what that word means. He signed that CONTRACT. He didn’t have to. He choose to be part of the KCChiefs. CONTRACT, kind of like marriage, marriage is a CONTRACT, you know ‘for better or for worse’?? well, maybe your not married. CONTRACT, let’s see….. maybe you bought a car and signed a CONTRACT to pay for the car over time. Bet there wasn’t a clause that said you don’t half to pay for it, if it’s broke. All these primadonna’s ( probably not spelled right, but i’m sure you like it better than “egotistical maniac” ) think their CONTRACTS are different. They are special. Instead of saying ’ how fortunate i have been to have had a successful career in KC and got paid handsomely, was given the key to the city, was honored and respected, HEY, WHY DON’T I SUPPORT, LEAD, AND CHEER THE TEAM AND ORGANIZATION AND CITY THAT I HAD A CONTRACT WITH, AND COMMIT, NO MATTER WHAT, WHILE I AM UNDER CONTRACT, AND BECAUSE I’M A MAN AND I GOT BALLS, AND I GOT A $$$BIG MONEY CONTRACT$$$…. damn, there’s that word again. Sorry about the crack comment, i’m just tired of people coming down on T.G.
If your whole statement is based on the contract’s, it happens all the time, every year players hold out for better money or get traded to another team before their contracts are up. Like ive been informed before these guys are the ones putting their health on the line for your entertainment and as far as the"Contract’s" go, how many players contract’s go full term in this day and age of football.
I wish the players today had at least some sort of team loyality, i believe some do but not many. I wish T.G had finished his career here in K.C but it just didnt worked out…………to bad for him,and to bad for us!

It was Tony's salary number that got in the way of keeping 2 (or more) veterans on the team.

I’m not with Dinomight on the abandoning a sinking ship. Considering the loyalty that flows down from owners/mgmt to players, I have no problem with the player wanting to go to a winner. What’s griped me is how blind he was to seeing how his (and Derrick Thomas’s) kid gloves treatment led to the loss/disaffection of some key players. James Hasty and Neil Smith deserved a lot more respect from the organization than they received, and their contract disputes were always in the context of Carl Peterson photo ops in the wake of gold-plated deals with the great LB and great TE.

All I was trying to say is the TG post are all moot points, nothing said or done after the trade other than the draft pick effects the Chiefs. The horse has been beated to death, let’s move on the the future of the Chiefs.

Yesterday's history. Tomorrow's a mystery.

Today is a gift. That’s why they call it “the present.”

Beating a dead horse is probably good exercise, and the horse is beyond caring. So where’s the harm? Heh.

Really enjoyed Dinomight‘s link. Got schooled a bit on Curtis’s blocking abilities. I take back what I said earlier in another thread about wanting a monster blocker, rather than a 250-pound receiver. Sure, I’d rather see a great blocking tight end who can lull the coverage scheme to sleep and make a KEY catch (rather than a meaningless stat-inflater). But it sounds like Curtis is blue collar all the way, AND has some finesse. Could be a very good pickup.

Could be some INTERESTING mismatches, if opposing D’s run their “big” packages against KC’s 2 tight ends. Might be better matchups for one or both of those TEs in the pattern than Tony G has seen for the last 8 years.

Well

It is a particularly slow time in the offseason, so at this point people are just honing their posting skills so they can stay sharp for the season. :)

I’m so football starved at this point that I’ve already made two offseason trades in my fantasy league. Just traded away Matt Cassel for Tony Romo (who I will be using in a stellar bit of gamesmanship to throw off my competitors’ drafts next month).

Predictions for 2009

1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.

Happens To The Best Of Us :)

The Cassel-Romo trade was actually the second one. The first one was trading Braylon Edwards and Roy Williams (WR) for the number 2 overall pick in our draft outright. I already had Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald as starters and we’re only allowed to keep five players from our previous year’s team. My remaining three are Marshawn Lynch, Steve Slaton, and Matt Forte. I’m going to make the other guys think I’ll be keeping Romo instead of Lynch. When I don’t keep Romo but do keep Lynch, they’ll assume that I’ll use my #2 pick on Romo or a QB, but I’ll be looking for a running back I think will be a primary by season’s end (I think Knowshon Moreno offers the best upside) and will grab a second RB with my other first rounder if Beanie Wells, Pierre Thomas, or Darren McFadden fall to me with that pick…which they might). The guy with the number one pick also needs a QB (he’s got LT, Frank Gore, and Ryan Grant) and I think he’ll bite on either Romo or Jason Witten with that pick (he loves Witten).

The guys in my league are always going on and on, though, about how important a top QB is, though, and I think it’s a load of crap…it’s more important to have top RBs (or WRs to a lesser extent). We’ve got a 10 team league, there are 32 starting QBs each week in the NFL, one starting QB slot on our game rosters, and most people don’t keep 3 QBs on the roster, so in any given week there will be three or four QBs available on waivers who can give you 15 points or better. Last year Kurt Warner, Matt Cassel, Matt Ryan, and Joe Flacco were all available off waivers for multiple weeks and were productive throughout the year. Try finding three or four starting RBs who can give you double-digit points who’ll be available on waivers that long in midseason. You’re lucky to find a guy who’ll get 10 carries a game. So unless you can get Brees, Manning, Rivers, or Rodgers you’re probably better off just drafting BPA at that pick, and running backs who will likely get high numbers of carries have the most value.

5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.

by UCrawford on Jul 12, 2009 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

This Is Primarily Possible Because Of My Man-Crush On Romo

He was my starting QB for his first two years in the NFL and I bitched about it constantly when I lost him last season in our draft…even tried to trade for him but my buddy who had him wouldn’t give him up for anything I was willing to part with. But everyone assumes there’s a strong attachment to him and that I’ll want him back immediately. But I’m never sentimental about fantasy football, so unless Romo falls to me in the 7th round or unless he’s BPA with my second first-rounder, I’ll let him go elsewhere and draft a running back and see if maybe I can get him in a favorable trade when someone’s RB craps out with injury or age mid-season. :)

Fantasy football is all about the running backs. :)

The Advice Is Dependent On How Your League Is Set Up, Of Course

If you’re playing in a league that starts two QBs, then they are more valuable. In our league you have 9 starting slots and have to start at least two RBs each week (and can start up to three), you only have to start one WR (although you can start up to three), can start up to two TEs and can only start one QB. With only one slot in the gameday roster that a QB can fill, there’s basically not a lot of scarcity. By the end of the year people usually only have two QBs and they fill the other eight bench spots with projects, handcuffs or players that they’re keeping in case of injury.

Last year I actually made an incredibly stupid trade by giving away Dwayne Bowe for Jon Kitna (who got knocked out for the season that week) and I realized that unless you’re getting a top five QB in trade you might as well snag some guy off waivers if you’ve only got one starting slot for your QB and hold onto your position players who’ll get touches instead of giving them away.

To those saying "enough already with Tony posts"

It was/is my hope that this can bring some closure to the subject and allow us to move on.

It’s not unusual for AP to follow past players through the NFL after leaving KC, and I do like that information. To me, it’s usually nice to know how and where someone has ended up and to see how they do after life in KC. However, this separation was a difficult one to swallow because of how beloved Tony was by the fans.

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

True-True

I agree … TG is still well liked and was a fan favorite .. but what HOF isn’t? I think it’s silly for people to think he actually has a chance of going to a Super Bowl with the Falcons. They are ahead of the Chiefs in developing a winning Team but no where near Super Bowl contention. I wish him all the best and hope we replace him with someone who can block and catch. I think he was a great receiver but a mediocre blocker who lacked leadership but was a good citizen.

They're ahead in the sense that they WON last year.

We’ll see if their “put us over the top” moves actually WILL.
