McKinner Dixon

340x_medium

via cache.daylife.com

Dixon is a DE from TExas Tech that has entered the Supplemental Draft.

6-3 250

Dixon is a versatile d-lineman that can play DE or move inside to DT and he has a dominant pass rush from the edge. McKinner produced 33 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, and 9 sacks last year.

The downside of Dixon is that he flunked out of school after his freshman year and had to go too junior college to get his grades back up. Dixon returned to Texas Tech last year and led the team with sacks and tackles for losses. McKinner was suspended indefinitely by coach Mike Leach for not taking care of academic responsibilities.

Those numbers are impressive

But I’m not sure PIoli and Co. would be after a guy who couldn’t keep up his academics. We’ll see…I do believe there’s a difference between field smarts and life smarts.

Agreed Prime

Idwouldnt mind us spending a later pick for him. He could def. bring some competition to the DE’s and could be versatile just like Magee and move inside.

I don't give a shit

how he did in his Philosophy classes. Not everyone has the same values and not everyone is good at school. If he isn’t an off field problem, stays out of trouble and can learn the playbook without having problems then I think his college grades are irrelevant.

Sometimes, not being good at some things can help you to excel in the things you are good at. Sports and education go hand in hand but that doesn’t mean athletes should be punished because they don’t perform well in the class room.

I have mde this argument before but a lot of these professional athletes come from broken homes, bad neighborhoods and failing schools with apathetic teachers. Sports like basketball and football are a ticket out for some of these people.

My father is a truck driver and works his ass off working midnight shift to support his family. He was never a good student and was our families lone source of income. Thanks to him I was able to go to college and graduates school. Hell, I myself was a terrible student when it came to math. I tried very hard, all the way through college and still ended up getting C’s and D’s.

Yet I recieved a Masters Degree the day before I turned 25 years old.

I say if the guy is a good person, hard worker on the field and in the football classroom, there is no reason the Chiefs shouldn’t take a chance on him if they think he can help.

Would he play LB?

at 250, I don’t think he’d have a spot on the Chiefs’ DL.

But, he could bring depth and pass rush ability to the OLB spot that Hali occupies.

by stagdsp on Jul 10, 2009 9:38 AM CDT reply actions

He would be a LB +1

I’ve seen a few Red Raider games living in MO but McKinner never really stuck out on any given play. Might be worth a look but with the fact we already gave up our 7th rounder next year, I’m not sure how far I would go in a bidding war for him.

I am torn on this one.

Although I think he could help us, I doubt Pioli would bring in a guy who flunked out a year in college.
Pretty impressive stats in a tough conference.

He seems a little small

to be a 3-4 end. But what do I know?

There’s no question in my mind that the people in charge of getting quality players for the Chiefs are looking at all their options. However, I don’t want any Sippio’s, Drummonds, Martin’s, or Medlocks. Those guys can stay home. Or in the UFL. Whichever.

My crystal ball says that the Chiefs will not be drafting Aaron Curry. Their record at the end of 2009 will be 10-6. After witnessing the 2009 draft, their record will be 8-8.

Ive done a little more research on Dixon and this is what they have to say about him over at Texas Techs Blog:Has some quotes from Leach about Dixon and after reading it I dont think he would be a good choice for KC

If There's A Will...

there’s a way. Busted for not having insurance? Millions of people in the US alone don’t have insurance, and I know quite a few. So he makes excuses, who doesn’t? If he is a beast and can put up half the numbers he did last year, he single-handedly produces half as much sacks as we tallied last year. I say sign him to a one-year deal, lock him up under the stadium, toss him raw meat throughout the week, have Haley give him an occasional beating (informing him it was at the request of the next opponent), and then cut him loose on game day.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:
1. Chiefs will be at least 8-8 and vie for division champs
2. DJ will break out and finally have his year
3. LJ returns to form
4. DBowe drops will reduce

smart?

Its a well known fact the Neil Smith wasn’t the brightest color in the box of crayons but man could he get after the quarterback.

by tbigjake on Jul 10, 2009 11:53 AM CDT reply actions

If he has the football smarts

I think that’s all Pioli will care about. His problems weren’t attitude problems and he worked his ass off to comeback to school.

His numbers are great. I’m just never that hopefully about these things anymore. Everytime I get excited about a player prospect its very underwhelming. Plus its the supplemental draft.

No thanks

I agree with everything Patrick says but there seems to be a pattern here. It looks like the guy does just enough to get on the field. He got into Texas Tech then flunked out, so in order to get back on the field he goes to community college. He’s able to get back to Tech, makes it through the football season, but then can’t keep his grades up. My thinking is if the guy could get passing grades in community college, I’m sure he could handle his Communication courses at Texas Tech University.

Maybe I’m wrong, maybe his coach just had it in for him, maybe Texas Tech is the Harvard of the Big 12. I don’t know. We’d just really need to do our homework on the guy and not give up anything more than a 7th rounder.
