Branden Albert: 'I'm Trying to be a Leader'
Good read from Kent Babb this morning on Branden Albert. Check it out.
It wasn’t easy for Branden Albert to sit at the barbecue joint and take a pass on the ribs, the brisket, the pulled pork — everything. It wasn’t easy to keep his mind on a strict offseason diet and exercise plan and ignore the meat-scented air and the colleague across from him, digging in.
Heck, it isn't easy for anyone to sit at Jack Stack BBQ and not eat. I can't even imagine Branden Albert not eating. That's cruel. He needs to get himself some of that low-fat, low-carb...ah nevermind. It doesn't exist. BBQ is too good to change.
Anyway, Albert is envisioning himself as something the Kansas City Chiefs haven't had since Trent Green left - a team leader.
"I’m trying to be a leader, and I’m trying to win games. Coach Haley and Scott were on me so hard about: ‘You know what type of guy you can be. So why don’t you be that guy?’ "
Babb goes on to mention that Brian Waters has been a mentor to Branden Albert and that Albert has no idea if Waters will end up playing for the Chiefs in 2009.
Let's talk about team leaders for a second. I posit that Trent Green was the last true team leader of the Chiefs, with spokesmen rotating in and out - Tony Gonzalez, Brian Waters....They weren't and aren't team leaders. They're simply the ones who talk to the media more. Gonzalez was too whiny and Waters never was assertive.
That brings up an interesting question: Who are the team leaders on offense and defense for the Kansas City Chiefs?
Right now, I say nobody has stepped into that role on either side of the ball. I predict that QB Matt Cassel emerges as a team leader on the offensive side of the ball and more than likely for the team as a whole. He's got the confidence and intelligence to do that. And he wins sort of by default - Who else is going to step up?
Thoughts on the Chiefs team leaders, or lack thereof?

great read
babb’s piece is nice and I love the injection of leadership into the key position on the O-Line.

I agree that Trent Green was the last leader
Certainly no QB has filled that role since then…we have so many what if’s on the team right now it is hard to pick who would be a team leader. Of course we brought in a bunch of veterans on defense, but it will be surprising to see how many of them stay more than 1 year and actually become CHIEFS.
I think Jared Allen was a good leader on defense. He had his issues off the field but he played with such passion and really enjoyed the game and has fun out there. i don’t know if he was a leader or not, but his personal issues aside, I believe he had the qualities of a leader on the field.
I would love for Albert to be a leader and play here for 10 plus years, that is something the Chiefs need to help build this new identity that doesn’t involve rotating veterans in and out in hopes of a playoff win.
Boomer Sooner!
and
Go Chiefs!

My hope ............
Is that M.Cassel takes the leadership role, along with B.Albert, and D.Bowe. It would be nice to put L.J on that list, but i dont think L.J does anything for anyone except himself. He might be working the hardest at camp, but its only to get his value back-up. Thats just my opinion, i could be wrong and he has changed.
One this i noticed about B.Albert is, when someone scored a T.D he was one of the first people their. I noticed this watching some of last yrs games here http://www.mywavv.com/Scripts/index.htm

Excellent article
And an excellent post. Really nice to hear about a guy working so hard and trying to step up. And that is the essence of leadership…taking on the role and putting your money (or effort) where your mouth is. Pushing others to work as hard as you are.
On offense, it looks like Albert may become a leader this year, and I think Matt Cassel is going to emerge as well. In terms of hard work and team effort—-a lot of you will flame me for this—-but Larry Johnson so far this year seems to be setting a hard work example. I don’t know that he has the mental make-up to really be a leader, but so far he has made an impression on people this year.
On defense, it looks like Zach Thomas has already taken a big role there. By all accounts I think we can expect Vrabel to be one as well. And the new guy Mike Brown has the history in Chicago of being that guy. How many of those will last beyond this year who knows, and we will have to have other guys step up and become leaders through the year.
Chiefs go 9-7. LJ makes 1400 yards. DBowe makes 1200 yards. Defense #18.

Defensive Leader
I’d like to see a little of Zach Thomas’ leadership rub off on Derrick Johnson, because Johnson would be a fine defensive leader.
But honestly, I could see Tyson Jackson stepping into that role
Marley will be walking soon...she could probably play Linebacker better than some of the guys we had.

Haley has said Zack isn't the out spoken type of leader he leads more by example
and he has done that very well, I think a lot of players have responded to it, most of all DJ so he could turn out to be the more out spoken type of leader.
Herm is gone things are better with that one move!!

I agree but disagree
If DJ is to become a leader I would also want it to be like ZT by leading by example. Its been proven more then enough times that DJ can’t handle too many things on his plate and needs to be able to just focus on football. When he starts thinking too much about too many other things it directly affects his performance on the field.

Leadership is many different things
The best leaders IMO, are the ones that are not appointed, they just assume the role. Not through claims or by running others down to make themselves appear to be better, they just to the job and others start to look to them as the example. I’m retired Navy, and the best advice I was ever given when I was starting out was simple “Leadership Through Example”. As I looked around I noticed the true Leaderships were the ones that didn’t make excuses for mistakes, they owned up to them and learned from them. They didn’t settle for Half Assed efforts, they pushed themselves and their crews to be more and better than the rest. On the Chiefs one of the Best Leaders I have seen in recent years was Marcus Allen, I loved the way he played with Class, He would break a record with a TD and there was no celebration of himself, no touchdown dance just hand the ball over to the official and get ready for the next play. The term He used and taught tooth Chis was “Act like you have been there before, even if you haven’t” Trent Green was another good Leader for the team but in a lesser way in my opinion. I would love to see some class brought back to football, I’m sick of the spikes and the celebrations of a player doing his job even in a losing effort. How many times have we seen a tackle get a celebration like it was a game stopper in the final second of the super bowl only for it to be for a minor stop in the first quarter of a losing game. Just my thoughts on what Leadership is.
is it me? or isn't about time the Lamar Hunt trophy belonged to His team?

I agree with Cassell becoming the leader or face of the organization.
On defense I could see someone like Dorsey who comes from a winning organization and will be more comfortable in his second year. I hope DJ steps up, and I do believe that he will. Pollard would be my other thought.
by Helmets on Jul 1, 2009 8:05 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Pollard
I’d put him in the leader category, somewhat. I didn’t hear him whining or making excuses last year but he did step up and accept responsibility for the product on the field. Of course we don’t know anything about how he’s perceived in the locker room so really guessing who the leader is is just speculation on our part.
Predictions for 2009
1. Todd Haley's going to struggle with managing his staff in his rookie year as head coach.
2. The Lions will draft Matt Stafford, the Rams will draft Jason Smith, and the Chiefs will draft either Aaron Curry or Eugene Monroe.
3. Maurice Carthon will be the most hated man on the Chiefs' coaching staff within two years.
4. Larry Johnson has already played his last meaningful game for the Kansas City Chiefs. He's gone before the 2009 season starts.
5. Larry Johnson will gain 0 yards rushing for the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs.

If you’re trying to drop weight what the hell are you doing in a bbq joint? Thats like an alchoholic hanging out at a bar.
I got some AB’s for lunch yesterday. Love that beef and pork combo.

Beef and turkey for me
And those fries.
Except I couldn’t do that for lunch on a work day. I would be sleeping at my computer.

We have suppliers come in from out of town for lunch meetings
and a lot of them always want KC BBQ – it’s torture =)
I work in NKC, so Smokehouse, Gates, and AB are the most common requests, and getting back from lunch at 12:30 or 1:00 and having to work until 3:30 is pretty rough sometimes…

Jackson, Dorsey, Cassel, and Bowe
I think those are the 4 guys that need to step it up and lead. At the very least, fire the team up and get them motivated when needed. If Albert wants to have a role in their, even better.

Bowe?
I can see Bowe trying to get guys pumped up, but so far haven’t seen him as a leader type. The Bowe Show was not leadership. I can see Cassel taking over leadership of the offense, since we keep hearing about his work ethic and he seems pretty down-to-earth (like a Marcus Allen type). As for the defense, so far it’s been all about Z Thomas this offseason. If DJ hasn’t taken that role yet, he won’t, so we have to hope one of the younger guys learns a lot about how to carry themselves and the team from ZT.

I can see Bowe as a leader of sorts..
He is the kind of guy who will keep the game fun and will always help to keep morale up in the locker room. Those are definite leadership qualities depending on how you look at it.

well
I did say “need”. Most people can learn leadership. I think that if the Chiefs are going to have any level of success, those four dudes are going to be right in the middle of it. I’d like to see them bring the whole team up to their level.

Branden's leadership
“I can’t preach what I don’t practice” – best line in that whole interview… and shows Albert is one of those rare young men coming into this league who “gets it”. Best draft pick of the last five drafts imho.

In a perfect world
I would love to see that Glen Dorsey and Matt Cassell be the team leaders for no other reason than it means that both are clear-cut starters and we didn’t waste draft picks on them.

Leaders
Ty Jackson and Matt Cassell ……. Ty was a leader at LSU so I expect him to assume the same role in KC. I think it’s obvious that Matt is taking that role for the offense. It’s great to see Branden taking that role for the O-Line .. I think he’s shown the most promise out of any of the newer rookies. Also, I think Ty will push Dorsey to be a better player so, at this point, it does look promising for the Chiefs and their new regime.

I applaud Branden's efforts.
This is more of what we need. I think a key part of the article is him saying that it’s ok to eat up once in a while. As a person who has recently lost some weight, I realize how important this part is. If you don’t, you’ll drive yourself crazy. There’s no point in it if you’re miserable in the process. Considering I’ve lost 40 pounds in 8 months, I’d say I’m a prime example that this it works. Eat some of that BBQ now and again buddy!
